like, she’s frumpy and he’s a heartthrob

it’s not logical. it makes zero sense. it has to be a cruel prank

but he’s sweet and funny and remembers the small things

like how she’ll instinctively dog-ear the books at the library, but then fold them back into place because they’re too fragile

or that she hates the color pink because it reminds her of home, of the parents she misses so much

he tells her about his home, and she tells him about hers, and sometimes she wonders where how someone so sweet could be so brutal

and his heart beats like a snitch before she agrees to go to the yule ball with him

she doesn’t believe that he thinks she’s the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen, but by the gods she is

and it’s short-lived, and it’s complicated

Successful was always the word Hermione used to describe her future when asked. Business school seemed the best way to go about making sure she was. She always figured she’d be some kind of accountant, or manager. She hadn’t even considered the idea that she would inherit her cousin’s bakery. She hadn’t even considered that she would be thrown into someone else’s dream and that she would have to work so hard to learn the trade herself and…well…after all these years she’d really grown to love it.

Her friends had thought she was crazy when she first started but they knew if anyone could do it, it was her. And she did. She’d taken night classes and learned to bake and had kept her cousin’s dream alive long after she had passed unexpectedly.

Despite a good portion of their relationship being long distance, Viktor cannot stand to be away from Hermione for long. He makes every effort to make up for lost time, waking her up early to run through lists of plans when she visits him on tour.

Hermione becomes a relatively good healer as she gets older, Viktor is incredibly stubborn about being treated and as she can bully him the most effectively he more often than not ends up being treated at home for whatever injury he collected on the pitch.

Viktor loves that Hermione is smaller than him, she doesn’t need his protection, but he likes it all the same. When they are out for drinks with friends, he stands behind her, one large hand on her hip as he holds her against the length of his body. When they both get home from work, he picks her up, propping her onto the kitchen counter and standing between her legs so they can talk ‘face to face’ about each other’s days.

With Viktor’s support Hermione becomes more confident in her role as an activist. After two unfulfilling years at the Ministry, she leaves to become an independent voice, backed up by many a former Death Eater looking to establish a cleaner profile. Viktor sneaks in before every major speech, reminding her she knows her lines and that she can do it, she can make real change; it will just take patience, and time.

so it would have been one of those, “i met you in high school, but we didn’t really talk until years later” sort of thing.

hermione met viktor on her first day of high school.

he was one of her mentors to show her around the school.

naturally, she thought he was very attractive, but he was a senior.

and a football player.

and incredibly sought after.

there was no way a freshman who had more books than friends could possibly end up with someone like that.

and hermione wasn’t into dating at that point anyway, so she let go of that feeling of fleeting attraction.

viktor didn’t seem to pay attention to her anyway.

or so she thought.

it wasn’t until she graduated high school and was going to standford that she saw him again.

she was pulling her trunk and bags behind her and up to her co-ed dorm that her parents were fretting over the whole summer before.

when she started to have issues getting her trunk and bags up the stairs.

she was silently cursing to herself when suddenly a very large hand was in her vision and grabbed her trunk.

she was about to tell them to let go of her trunk, but then she realized a guy was actually trying to help her.

her cheeks went pink before she said anything.

“hi, it’s hermione, right?” the stranger asked her.

hermione whipped her head up and was about to ask how he knew her name, but then she saw his face and recognized him instantly.

“viktor krum?” she asked stupidly, “i had no idea you went to stanford.”

“you’re one of the only ones then,” he replied, “i am the quarterback.”

flustered and embarrassed, hermione tucked a curl behind her ear.

she was also slightly irritated at his seemingly new arrogant disposition.

“well then,” she said in an exaggerated and sarcastic fashion, “i had no idea you were so important.”

she wanted him to fight back, but he just started chuckling.

“oh hermione, you haven’t changed a bit, and by the way, i wasn’t saying that to be arrogant. i can be rather off-putting with my word choice sometimes. my mom says i have an issue with being blunt.”

“you and me both,” hermione interjected.

viktor smiled wider.

“what room are you?”

“421.”

“i’ll show you the way.”

hermione nervously put more curls behind her ear again as she picked up her bags and followed him.

she tried not to be aware of how he was more muscular than he was in high school, and she tried not to watch his muscles flex as he moved to readjust her trunk in his arms.

they made it to her room, and her roommate was already there.

she was as pale as she would have imagined snow white to be, and her hair was in a black pixie cut.

she was chewing gum loudly and flipping through a magazine.

“you must be hermione granger,” she suddenly said, not looking up from her magazine, “i’m pansy parkinson.””

“pleasure,” hermione said politely. 

she set down her bags and watched viktor set down her trunk by her bed.

“do you need anymore help?” he asked her.

hermione took her focus away from pansy flipping through the pages of her magazine to look up at him.

she smiled shyly and replied, “no, but thank you.”

he rubbed the back of his neck and walked out the door without another word. 

hermione took a deep breath, and she noticed pansy was finally looking at her.

“you know who that is, right?” pansy asked her, “viktor fucking krum, the quarterback? the senior?”

“yeah,” hermione replied casually and turned away from her to start unpacking, “i knew him in high school.”

“you know he has the reputation to be really shy and not pay attention to any girls on campus, right? you realize that he ju-.”

but pansy was cut off again by knocking on the door frame.

pansy and hermione looked up to see viktor standing there shyly.

“hermione, do you want to go to dinner tonight, to uh.. catch up?”

hermione’s cheeks burned.

she felt pansy’s gaping look burning into the side of her skull.

“sure, i’d love that.”

he smiled and looked surprised, but he told her he would pick her up at seven and walked off again.
