It's 2 am when you leave the convenience store close to your apartment, your heart beating a bit faster when you realize how poorly lit the streets are. What does a city have to do to get good infrastructure?Â
The rustling coming from the trees next to you makes you jump a bit, walking a bit faster and clutching your grocery bag tightly, glancing behind you every couple of steps. You're about to reach for your pepper spray when you hear more rustling followed by a loud âthumpâ and a small âouch.â At first you think itâs a very dedicated criminal, but the notorious white and blue suit has your eyes widening and your heart racing, this time not out of fear.Â
âOh my god, Spider-Man!â you call out, taking a tentative step forward. The masked hero gets up from his less than graceful fall and waves at you quickly.
âHello! Didnât mean to scare you,â he says, you assume heâs smiling from the tone of voice, "I was out patrolling and was heading home. I figured Iâd keep an eye on you until you got homeâ he explained, âjust in case.âÂ
âOh thatâs really kind, thank you,â you smile, your grip on the bag loosening and your tense shoulders relaxing. âIâm really almost home, so you donât have to waste your time on me.âÂ
The hero crosses his arms at your words, âtskâing at you. âMaking sure you get home safely is not a waste of my time!â he reprimands, walking over to you and shaking his head, âlead the way.âÂ
Youâre strangely nervous as you walk with Spider-Man, trying to ignore how tall he was and instead focus on not embarrassing yourself while the two of you make small talk.
âDâyou go to college around here?â he asks, mentally slapping himself because obviously you do, the sweatshirt youâre wearing has JUJUTSU TECH on it.Â
âYeah I do! What about you?â The question leaves your mouth instinctively, your eyes widened. âNot that you have to tell me! I know you donât want people knowing who you are, given the mask and all.â The words rush out of your mouth, your face is hot as you look down at the ground.Â
Spider-Man looks at you, a wide smile on his face underneath the mask. You can hear a chuckle coming from him, it gives you enough courage to glance at him.Â
âI do,â is all he says. You nod, biting your tongue before you could ask what he was majoring in. He's thankful you don't ask any further questions, afraid he'd stupidly give you all the information you'd need to unmask him just for a chance to spend more time with you. The conversation flows easily, soft giggles coming from the two of you when he admits how long it took him to properly swing around the city.Â
âI fell on my ass too many times to count the first weekâ he laughs, âbut after a while it just kinda made sense.â Youâre nodding along to his words, turning the corner into your apartment complex. The sight of your building nearing has your heart falling a bit.
âThis is me,â you smile, jingling the keys in your hand before unlocking your front door. âThank you for walking me, I felt a lot safer,â you can only hope the sincerity in your voice peaks through enough to show your gratitude to the superhero.Â
âOf course, what else is a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man good for?â You could hear the smile in his voice, it makes your stomach flip.Â
âBe safe out there Spider-Man! You never know when I need you to walk me home againâ you laugh.
âSay the words and Iâll be there,â he replies, a hand over his heart as he takes a couple steps back, waving goodnight. It's only seconds later you hear a âthwip,â and a âwooshâ before he's out of sight .Â
If today was any indication for the school year, maybe youâd have a shot for a great semester. The small smile on your face only fades when you check the time, had it taken that long to walk back home?Â
Satoru couldnât stop himself from humming along to his music, giggling as he lands with a soft thud on the fire escape of his apartment, making his way in through the window before heâs taking his mask off, sighing softly.Â
âYou should really go grocery shopping,â the familiar voice has him jumping, turning his head quickly and coming face to face with his best friend.Â
âYou should stop breaking into my apartment!â Satoru quips back, relaxing a bit in the familiar company and scenery of his home.Â
âIt's not breaking in when you gave me a key,â Suguru grins, already taking the last soda from the fridge and opening it, taking a swig as he walks back to the couch.Â
âTechnically I didn't, you and Shoko took that liberty upon yourselvesâ he pouts, struggling to unzip the back of his suit.Â
âYou should be grateful we did,â Shoko rounds the corner. Satoru would have been startled had he not felt her presence after he'd spotted Suguru, âor else you wouldâve been dead after the ferry incident.â She's helping Satoru unzip his suit silently, a small âthank youâ falling from the superheroâs lips.
âYeah, whatever,â he grumbles. âWhat are you guys even doing here?â Satoru asks, shrugging the suit off his shoulders and slipping on a hoodie and shorts before heading to the kitchen where the other two now were.Â
The empty fridge stares back at him mockingly, one tomato, a half empty jar of grape jelly, two buzzballs and exactly three string cheese sticks. He really did have to go grocery shopping.
âWell we wanted to get dinner together before the start of the semester,â Shoko sighs, taking the coke from Suguru's hand and taking a sip, âbut we all know the only thing thatâs open this late.â
âThere's nothing wrong with Antonioâs pizza!â Satoru and Suguru say in unison, both of them pouting with their arms crossed. Shoko canât help but roll her eyes at her friend's antics.
âWhat were you so smiley about by the way?â Suguru asks, the three friends filing out of the small apartment, Satoru locks it before stuffing his key in his front pocket. He only shrugs his shoulders, shaking his head and trying his best to act nonchalant.
âSmiley? I wasnât smileyâ he replies, Shoko canât help but stifle a laugh.Â
âYou're a terrible liar for someone with an alter ego.âÂ
Two days later youâre hopping off the bus, headphones on as you walk towards your first class of the day. You werenât excited for the new semester, especially not when the sun was beating down on you and making you sweat on your cross campus walks from lecture to lecture. The nerves in your stomach settled as you sat through your first lecture, grateful to have found a familiar face in the large lecture hall.Â
As the lecture finishes you realize the twenty minute intervals between class was much too short for you to make it from west campus all the way to north campus in time for your organic chemistry lecture.Â
âWhat class do you have after this?â Utahime asks you, the two of you hopping on the bus to head back to main campus.Â
âIâve got second semester organic chemistryâ you groan, âIâm manifesting itâs better than last semester,â thereâs little hope in your voice as your friend pats your shoulder.Â
âOh, that class made me quit pre-med actually!â Utahime is smiling at you widely, âbut Iâm sure youâll do great,â thereâs little reassurance in her voice and sympathy in her eyes as you both burst into muffled giggles, shaking your head as you focus on your phone.Â
There's pictures of Spider-Man popping up on your feed, and you canât help but think back to how utterly charming he was. You felt silly, it was one interaction and you were almost certain he acted like that with every person he helped. You pushed your thoughts to the back of your mind, what were the odds youâd ever interact with him again anyway?
By the time you reach your lecture room thereâs only a couple empty seats scattered throughout the room, most people seated with friends or already making conversations with soon to be study partners. You're grateful the classroom is set up with the entrance near the back as the two empty seats catch your eye, shuffling into the row and excusing yourself as you walk past your fellow classmates, accidentally bumping legs, laptops and backpacks along the way. What genius decided to make the rows so close together?
After a string of âexcuse meâs and âsorryâs, you finally settle into your seat, pulling out your tablet and opening up the class syllabus, taking your headphones out only when you see the professor move from his desk.Â
âOkay, it's about time we got started!â the man smiles, âIâm Dr. Yaga and Iâll be your professor for organic chemistry two, I'm sure youâre all thrilled to be here.â The sarcasm in his voice is enough to elicit a soft chuckle from the entire class.Â
Youâre listening intently as he talks about expectations and grading, your attention only tearing away slightly when the door creaks open and you hear shuffling from next to you.Â
âSorry, âscuse me, can I- sorryâ the whispers make you look up, moving your backpack closer to you so the stranger could sit comfortably in the seat next to you.Â
âIs this seat taken?â The soft voice makes you tear your gaze from the professor, your eyes meeting the most beautiful blue ones youâd ever seen covered by snowy white bangs.Â
âNo,â you whisper, face already heating up from the sight of the boy settling in next to you.Â
âAwesome, thanks,â he grins, voice a bit more hushed as he pulls out a beat up notebook and ballpoint pen.Â
His stark white hair is a bit messy, and you can only assume itâs from the skateboard he propped against the wall before he fought his way into the row. You're trying to not let your eyes wander, instead zoning back into whatever your professor was talking about next.Â
â-is very very hard, and the only youâll succeed is practice, hard work and more practice,â he smiles, flipping to the next slide, âwhich is why I make it mandatory to have a study buddy or study group!âÂ
There's a sea of whispers throughout the class as you bite your lip, the boy next to you frowning a bit as he reads the slide.Â
âThis assignment is an easy way to get points; all you have to do is send me the name or names of your buddies, their major and a fun fact about them!â Thereâs a smile on his face as he switches slides. âMany of my past students have told me their study groups really helped them, and some have even ended up dating their study partners so take that as you will,â there's scattered laughter as he continues on going over the syllabus, finishing with 20 minutes left of lecture.Â
âThat is everything I have for you guys today, feel free to stay and make those study groups now or get home early!âÂ
Before you can even begin packing your things, the guy next to you is turning to face you, a small smile on his face as he speaks up.Â
 âIâm Satoru by the way.âÂ
Youâre closing your tablet and putting it in your backpack as you give him a kind smile in return, âIâm Y/N, itâs nice to meet you!âÂ
Satoru gives you a small nod, âdid I miss anything the first few minutes? I got caught up with something this morning and lost track of timeâ he chuckled softly.Â
Youâre shaking your head, ânot really, just the usual introduction and âyou need to work hardâ spiel.â Satoru is smiling at you and nodding along.Â
âOkay cool, thank you so much!â he smiles, debating on asking if heâs seen you anywhere else, but he bites his tongue as he recalls two nights ago. Fate is a silly thing, and man, does it have a sense of humor. Youâre the same late night convenience store person he walked home.
âBy the way, did you have any study bud-â by the time heâs looking up from his backpack youâre already halfway out the door. He wants to hurry and catch up to you, but he decides against it, figuring heâll ask you on Wednesday if he gets to sit next to you again.Â
Your heart is racing as you walk out of the classroom, letting out a breath you didnât know you were holding as the cool winter air hits your face. There's only one thing on your mind as you walk to your bus stop, and itâs not what you were gonna have for breakfast. Instead your thoughts were plagued by a tall man with snowy white hair and striking blue eyes. The slight familiarity in his voice irked you as you struggled to place him, racking your brain for where you could've possibly heard him. There was no way in hell you'd forget a face like that.Â
A part of you knew the odds of ever sitting next to him again were low, especially since youâd only spoken a couple words to him, but you held onto the hope. Maybe thereâd be a seat open next to you again, and a certain white haired guy would sit there once again.Â
When you finally get home to your apartment you sink into your couch, letting out a small sigh. Your next class wasnât until your 6:30 lab, silently cursing yourself from the past, you let your eyes shut.Â
The rest of your classes this semester didn't seem horrible, having picked out easier courses to balance out with your chemistry class.Â
The day seemed to go by slowly, and youâd managed to knock out some assignments early for your other classes, already putting exam and due dates into your planner before having to head out for your lab.Â
Satoru cursed himself for not waking up in time for his registration last semester, especially as he made his way to the chemistry building again, this time for his 6:30 lab. What could possibly be so important about organic chemistry that they just had to have labs during the first week.Â
All his complaints seem to evaporate from his mind when he walks into the lab room, his eyes almost instantly landing on you, too engrossed in your phone to notice the 6â3 man walking over to you.
âIs this seat taken?â he asks, a grin on his face when you look up at him with wide eyes.Â
Thereâs no way, you think to yourself. There was absolutely no fucking way that the cute boy from lecture just so happened to have the same lab section as you, and was sitting next to you here too.Â
You shake your head. âYou say that a lot,â you joke, watching as he pulls the stool next to you out.Â
âAnd you seem to always have an open seat for me,â he replies, watching as you stifle a giggle from falling from your lips.Â
âIâm just a very welcoming person I guess,â Satoru only hums in agreement, a small smile on his face.Â
âDid you find a study group? I was gonna ask earlier but you left before I had the chanceâ he chuckles, and you can feel the warmth rising onto your cheeks at his words.Â
âSorryâ you smiled sheepishly, âbut no I havenât, I don't really know many people in there honestly.â Satoru grins at you and nods in agreement, mentioning something about how getting there late didnât help with first impressions much either.Â
Your conversation is cut short as the lab instructor begins talking, going over general rules, safety and expectations that the university makes them cover.Â
âAll you guys have to do is finish this safety quiz and youâre free to go.â The words make everyone perk up a bit, immediately starting on the quiz as soon as itâs handed to you. Satoru finishes before you do, handing it to the TA and walking out the door. A part of you deflates a bit, wishing that he wouldâve finished at the same time as you so you could talk a bit more.Â
As you turn in your quiz and make your way out, youâre shocked to see the much taller man with his back against the wall, a smile on his face when he sees you exiting the lab.Â
âI hope itâs okay I waited for you, I wanted to ask if you wanted to be study buddies.â You know you have a stupid smile on your face, that fact makes you even more flustered. Â
âNo worries,â you grin, âyeah thatâd be nice.â The two of you walk down the hall and towards the elevator. âJust a fair warning though, Iâm absolute shit at chem,â you laughed, "I barely passed inorganic and ochem one.âÂ
Satoru is laughing alongside you as you both enter the elevator, âno worries, thatâs what study groups are for right?â His tone of reassurance makes your heartbeat skip a bit, clearing your throat a bit and nodding. The sound of the elevator ding makes you let out a small breath.Â
âDâyou live off campus?â you ask, the two of you opening the front doors, warm afternoon breeze hitting the two of you.Â
âYeah, what about you?â He knew the answer, well Spider-Man knew the answer, but he tried his best to act oblivious.Â
âOff campus,â you reply, âdo you take the bus or drive?â you look up at him, the golden light of the sunset hitting his honey skin.Â
âI drive. Parking usually isnât too bad on north campus when I get here,â his heart drops when he realizes heâs just ruined his whole plan.
âYou park on north campus? Isn't it back that way?â you ask, brows a bit furrowed as you stop in your tracks.Â
Satoru canât stop the pink dusting his cheeks and the burning in his ears as he chuckles softly, âoh is it? I must've gotten my directions mixed up! First day and all.â
âWe had lecture in the same building this morning though,â you state, a smile playing on your lips as you watch him scramble for an answer.Â
âI mean- itâs just-â he sighs before smiling, looking at you through his lashes, âis it weird if I said I wanted to make sure you got home safe?âÂ
You smile at him, starting to walk again. Satoru quickly follows your steps. âI think thatâs sort of sweet actuallyâ you reply, âbut I mean we did only meet today, so I am a bit weary of your intentions,â you tease, turning to look at him with a lifted brow.Â
Satoru's eyes widened at your words, holding his hands up in defense, âno! oh my god I promise my intentions are only to court you into being my study buddy,â heart beating a bit faster when you laugh loudly at his words.Â
âCourt me? Are you a bird of paradise or from the 1600âs?â The smile on your lips has Satoru playing along, a finger on his chin as he thinks.Â
âBird of paradise, definitely.âÂ
After a couple more minutes of walking youâre finally at your bus stop, waving goodbye to the snowy haired man as you board the bus. Satoruâs walking away with the biggest smile on his face, ready to text you to have a good night when his smile drops and he stops in his tracks.Â
He forgot to get your number.Â
âHow do you manage to forget to ask for their number again?â Suguru asks, laughing as he watches his best friend worm his way into the infamous white and blue spandex.Â
Satoru frowns, fiddling with the webshooters on his wrist before finally clicking them into place, âThe conversation was really good and time just got away from me,â he mumbled, âplus it was like a ten minute walk and I don't want them thinking Iâm a weirdo or something.âÂ
âDude, you were bitten by a radioactive spider, can stop a bus with your bare hands and have an infinity surrounding your body at will.â Suguru hands him the small in-ear piece and pats his shoulder, âtotally not weird!âÂ
âYou're a terrible best friend, you know that?â
âSure I am,â Suguru teases, âif I was so terrible would I be your guy in the chair?â
âI thought we left that in high school!â Satoru whines, his mask half on his head, white hair peeking out from underneath it.Â
âWe are never leaving that behind,â Suguru laughs before adding on, âjust ask them for it tomorrow when you guys have lecture again. Have a great Tuesday night, Spider-Man!â
Satoru canât help but smile as he pulls his mask down to fully cover his face, crawling out the window and onto the fire escape, looking around before swinging into action.Â
It's a calm night consisting of helping cats out of trees and stopping corner store robberies; the usual. He's sitting atop a building, listening for signs of anything when he spots you, walking alone once again.Â
Itâs not until heâs swinging down and landing on top of the lamp post ahead of you that he realizes what heâs doing.Â
âYou really like walking alone at night, donât you?â he asks, watching as you jump slightly, smiling when you realize itâs him.Â
âI especially do now that I have a friendly neighborhood hero keeping me safe,â you grin.Â
âAnd how do you know Iâll always be here to protect you?â he replies, jumping down from the lamp post, landing only a couple feet away from you with a soft âthud.â
âYou're here now, arenât you?â bright eyes looking at him through his mask, and for a second heâs worried you see right through this façade of his. âAlso I ran out of milk and I had already poured myself a bowl of cereal,â you laugh.Â
âSo you walked all the way out here to get some milk for cereal,â he clarifies, walking in step with you, chuckling as you hum in agreement.Â
A comfortable silence fills the air for a while, city sounds wrapping the two of you in a bubble as you continue your way home.Â
âHow come you didnât just go to the convenience store you went to last time? This oneâs so much furtherâ he asks, watching as you switch the carton of milk to your other hand.
âThey didnât have milk, and this was the next closest store,â switching the carton back to your other hand as your arm grew tired again.Â
âHere I can carry it,â Spider-Man says, reaching his hand out and motioning to the carton of milk.Â
âHuh? Oh no itâs fine really!â you protest, not putting up much of a fight when he takes it from your hand, smiling when you let out a small sigh of relief.
âSo, is it true you can stop a bus with your bare hands?â you ask after a beat of silence.Â
You can tell heâs lifting his brows up, and you can hear the smile in his voice as he replies with a small nod.Â
âYeah, part of the whole spider thing,â he chuckles, âdid you think those videos online were fake or something?âÂ
You pray to any higher being that he can't hear your heartbeat spiking, shaking your head and immediately apologizing.
âNo! Oh my god no I would never discredit you! In fact Iâm a Spider-Man fan! I defend you online!â You chuckle nervously, the grass looked very interesting suddenly.
âI was kidding!â the masked hero laughs, âno need to get yourself doxxed for little olâ spidey.âÂ
You canât help but let out a small chuckle, âdid you just refer to yourself in the third person?âÂ
Spider-Man is quick to let out a small huff of air, youâre sure heâs pouting beneath his mask.Â
âI walk you home late at night and this is what I get? It really is a thankless jobâŚâ he trails off, only looking back at you when he hears you scoff and soft laughter. âHow is your semester so far?âÂ
Satoru sees you perk up a bit, it makes him bite back a smile as he listens to you talk about your lectures and professors.Â
â- also Iâm taking ochem two which Iâm dreading, but I made a friend there already and I think heâs gonna make it bearableâ the smile on your face has Satoru wanting to do summersaults on the spot.Â
âWhat about you? If I can ask,â you watch him shift the milk from one hand to the other.Â
âIt's going great so far actually, profs seem cool, classes seem as interesting as they can be, and Iâm hoping to talk to this person in one of my classes some more.âÂ
You try your best to hold back the surprise thatâs evident on your face, âSpider-Man has a crush?â you gasp, smiling as he stops, setting your gallon of milk down.Â
âYou know what, I think the city is safe enough,â he sighs, turning on his heel and walking away.Â
âOkay sorry! Is the hero life too intense for love?â you tease, picking up the gallon of milk and staring at his back. Youâd never noticed the smaller details of the heroâs famous suit, taking in the stitching details as he stops in his tracks.Â
Satoru tenses slightly at your question. Was it too intense? Why would he drag someone else he cared about into this life?
You lean slightly closer to him, admiring the web design before stumbling backwards when he turns around abruptly. You look at him, about to speak up when he takes the milk from your hands.Â
âOh please, the hero life isnât whatâs holding me back,â he shrugs, âin fact the hero life gives me more chances, actually,â he nods.Â
âOh really?â you ask, an amused look on your face as the masked man nods along.Â
âReally! People dig the whole hero thing. Iâm surprised you havenât tried to hit on me yet,â your face flushes red, rolling your eyes at him in an attempt to seem unaffected.Â
âIâve got to be insane to think about hitting on someone like Spider-Man of all people,â eyes widening when you realize how your words may come off. âNot that itâs a bad thing to be Spider-Man! or like Spider-Man! What I mean is youâre great and Iâd totally hit it- hit on you and-â you cut yourself off with a small groan and nervous laughter.Â
âYou're great, and I'm sure youâd be a great partner, but I think a superhero like you is way out of my league,â your voice is much calmer and your message much clearer this time.Â
Satoru canât help but want to laugh at how utterly wrong you were.Â
As your apartment complex comes into view he canât help but feel a bit disappointed as the conversation comes to an end, wishing you goodnight and to stay safe.Â
âOh and for the record, Iâm not out of your league,â he says, leaving you outside your apartment, the recognizable âthwipâ fading as he swings further and further away.Â
Youâre starstruck at his statement, hands a bit shaky as you open your apartment door, a goofy smile on your face as you pour milk into your bowl full of cereal.Â
The bus is never on schedule. You shouldâve left class five minutes earlier to catch an empty bus and avoid the ocean of students also struggling to get to class on time. It was a bit embarrassing really, walking into lecture slightly out of breath and sweaty, scrambling to find a seat.Â
Satoruâs ears perked up the second you entered the building, holding himself back from staring at the door until you finally walked in. He removes his backpack from the seat he'd been saving next to him, turning around and making eye contact with you, smiling and motioning for you to come sit.Â
âSleep through your first lecture?â he whispers, a sly smile on his face as you roll your eyes, taking out your tablet and trying to catch up on the notes.Â
âThe bus was late,â you whisper back, finally finding what they were talking about and diligently taking notes. Satoru hummed in acknowledgement, continuing to doodle in the corner of his notebook.Â
Class ended before you knew it, breathing a sigh of relief and frustration as you put your things away. Satoru had closed his notebook ten minutes before the lecture ended, simply listening to the professor speak and nodding along.Â
âI canât believe you donât take notesâ you remark, putting your backpack on as Satoru did the same, shrugging as he picks his skateboard up from next to the door.Â
âIt just makes sense to me,â he shrugs, âIâd get more distracted trying to write everything down than just listening to what heâs sayinâ anyway.âÂ
âOh before I forget, did you already submit the study buddy thing? I know itâs due Friday but just in caseâ you smile, Satoruâs eyes go wide as he remembers.Â
âI completely forgot we had to submit that! Do you wanna just do it now?â he asks, you check the time on your phone, nodding at him and making your way to a small bench, out of the way of the busy sidewalks.Â
âSo just name, major and fun fact right?â you ask, opening the file the professor had provided.
âYup,â Satoru mumbles, opening the same file and looking at you. âWell Iâm Satoru Gojo, nice to meet you,â he jokes, smiling when you let out a soft chuckle, âIâm majoring in biomedical sciences and fun fact about me,â he trails off a bit, humming as he thinks, "I love taking pictures,â he smiles.
âOh? Freelance photographer Satoru?â you tease, bumping your shoulder with him, making him smile and look at the ground for a moment.Â
âWhat about you?â he asks, âwhatâs your name again?â his brows furrowed, laughing when your mouth falls agape, âkidding!â he assures, showing you that he already had your first name typed out.Â
You tell him your last name and major, smiling when he seems to take interest in your major, asking about the classes you take and your favorite aspects of it.Â
âFun fact about me? Oh god,â you groan, staring up at the tree the two of you were sitting under. âI make really good brownies but canât make cookies for shit,â you laugh.Â
Satoru canât help but giggle, âreally?â he asks, paying full attention to you as you laugh.
âI swear Iâve tried everything and they just donât turn out right!â Satoruâs smiling at you, shaking his head.Â
âI make pretty good cookies myself, not to brag,â he smirks, dusting his shoulder off as you roll your eyes at him.Â
âIâll be the judge of that,â you say, submitting the assignment and putting your phone in your back pocket.Â
âMaybe Iâll send you my recipe,â Satoru replies, both of you standing up and walking in the direction of your bus stop.Â
The two of you mustâve been talking for a while, seeing as though the twenty minute period between classes had almost passed. The once crowded sidewalks were now almost empty as you continued talking.Â
âWell thank you for walking me to my bus stop, I hope the skate back to the north garage isnât too badâ you grin, looking past him and seeing your bus arriving.
âBefore I forget again!â he exclaims, setting his skateboard down and pulling a piece of paper haphazardly from his backpack along with a pen, scribbling on it before handing it to you.
âHereâs my number, in case you wanna text me, ochem or not.â He has a bashful smile on his face and his cheeks are pink, whether itâs from the walk or his recent actions youâre not sure, but you take the piece of paper from his hand and smile.Â
âIâll be sure to text you,â you smile, waving goodbye as you walk towards the bus.Â
Satoru sighs out of relief, a giddy smile on his face as he picks up his skateboard and runs his fingers through his hair, putting on his headphones and adjusting his sunglasses over his eyes before going on his way. He closes his eyes for a second, relaxing as he uses his spider senses to guide himself on his skateboard rather than his eyes, letting them get much needed rest.Â
No one would be able to tell his cerulean eyes were closed, not as he expertly avoided any passing pedestrians, crossing the street with ease before finally opening his eyes again and fishing for his car keys as he walked into the parking garage.
He checks his phone nervously, trying to ignore the disappointment he feels when thereâs no recent notifications. His ears twitch a bit as he listens in on the police scanner, checking the time before turning his car on.Â
His next class wasnât for another four hours. What better way to kill time than by stopping crime?
The second you close your apartment door you burst into giggles, face flushing as you stare at the piece of paper in your hand. His handwriting wasnât as messy as you expected it to be, neat and slightly cursive.
Youâre typing the numbers into your phone quickly, setting your backpack down and sinking into your couch. Your thumbs dance over your keyboard as you bite your lip. What do you even say?Â
You: hi :3
You delete the text quickly, the cursor blinking back at you.Â
You: just got home! itâs y/n by the way :)
Too lame? Would he care if you even got home?Â
Satoru meanwhile managed to snake his phone out of his suit pocket, landing on the roof of a building to check his notifications, frowning when there was still nothing from you. The fast approaching sirens pulled him out of his trance, quickly putting his phone away before shooting a web and chasing after the speeding trailer.Â
âReally? A high speed chase on a Wednesday? Maybe itâs time to hang up the webs,â he grumbles to himself. The back of the trailer is open, with two men shooting at the cop cars chasing behind them. âI gotta get in close, if they keep this up bystandersâll get shot,â he says to himself, narrowing his eyes slightly.
Satoru jumps up, shooting two webs on either side of the trailer and pulling himself forward, landing softly on the roof. Satoru feels the hair on his neck stand, immediately moving to the side and avoiding a bullet through the roof. He canât help but roll his eyes.Â
âSpider-Man, long time no see!â The masked criminal exclaims, peeking his head out from the trailer.Â
âAny chance you have room for one more?â Satoru asks, moving to the side of the vehicle. One of the masked men leans out, pointing the gun directly at Satoruâs chest. He doesnât waste time in tethering himself to the trailer's roof, swinging and kicking the man square in the chest, sending him flying out of the trailer and onto the sidewalk.Â
The other masked criminal curses, reloading his gun when Satoru lands on the trailer's roof again, waiting for the man to peek his head out in an attempt to shoot him. Satoru waves when he finally does, shooting two webs onto the manâs shoulders and kicking himself off of him. The man lands on the windshield of an oncoming cop car.Â
With a graceful flip heâs on top of the truck's cabin, sticking on the side. The driver aims his weapon at the masked hero, Satoru immediately webs the gun, pulling it out of his hands. The driver swerves in an attempt to shake the webslinger off. Satoru holds on tight, steadying himself before jumping off the vehicle, shooting a web through the rolled down window and pulling the man out. He aims one hand at the man, tethering him to a lamp post, while his other hand shoots a web at the unmanned trailer. He quickly shoots another one to the back, wrapping the webs around his wrists and planting his feet on the ground, grunting in exertion as the trailer comes to a stop inches away from another car.Â
Youâve made a grilled cheese sandwich by now, phone locked as you focused on the YouTube video playing. You were definitely overthinking this way too much.Â
You: its y/n :]
You send the message quickly, not giving yourself the chance to overthink as the message quickly says delivered. You're tossing your phone on the other side of the couch, pretending like you donât care as you continue your show.Â
Satoru shakes out his wrists, letting out a small huff as he stands up straight and acknowledges the police swarming the trailer, the other three suspects already placed in the back of squad cars.Â
âNothing like a high speed chase to keep a guy busy between lectures,â he smiles, shooting a web onto a nearby building and swinging into the air, heading to his apartment building. .Â
The short vibration in his pocket is enough to make him stop on a roof and fish out his phone.Â
[1 new message from xxx-xxx-xxxx]Â
xxx-xxx-xxxx: its y/n :]
Satoru smiles widely as he reads the message, locking his phone before running off the roof of a building, laughing as he swings through the air, finally landing on his building's fire escape, opening his apartment window and slipping in.Â
He takes his mask off quickly, white strands of hair sticking in every direction. He doesnât care how disheveled he looks as he taps your message, quickly replying.Â
satoru (chem): and here I thought you were gonna leave me hanging
The buzzing of your phone has you reaching across the couch faster than you care to admit, smiling when you read Satoruâs text.Â
You: noo i just got caught up making some food :P
Youâre still nervous as you send the message, exiting out of the chat and anxiously awaiting the three dots to appear.
satoru (chem) : you just reminded me I need to go grocery shopping :(Â
You canât help but giggle a little, thinking for a moment before typing out your next text, feet swinging back and forth.
Satoru doesnât bother taking his suit off before laying starfish across his floor, eyes closing for a second before theyâre shooting open at the sound of a notification.Â
y/n :3: please donât tell me youâre one of those guys who has like one lemon and a buzzball in your fridge âŚ
Satoru laughs out loud, cheeks rosy when he catches himself giggling at his phone. His stomach rumbles as he replies, the irony isnât lost on him.Â
satoru: grocery prices are out of control okay
Satoru sends the text quickly, unzipping his suit and grabbing fresh clothes from his dresser and hopping in the shower. The two of you continue to text as he heads to lecture, taking a seat in the back and mumbling a small âfuckâ as he realizes his phone was about to die.Â
satoru (chem): lecture just started :(
satoru (chem): Iâll text you after ?
Your heart jumps at the message, smiling even harder at his double texting.
You: sounds good :]Â
satoru (chem): okay :D
You: pay attention !!
satoru (chem): :(
You: :]
Satoru is blushing a bit, clearing his throat softly before finally focusing on the lecture.Â
You on the other hand were biting your bottom lip and giggling like a madman, calming yourself for a moment before checking social media.Â
SPIDER-MAN SAVES THE DAY ONCE MORE: ENDS HIGH SPEED POLICE CHASE
Your mouth is open slightly as you watch shaky video footage of the masked hero breaking into the trailer and kicking the criminal out of the car, only for him to stop the car with his bare hands mere seconds later. The hero gives a quick wave to those around before disappearing into the city skyline.Â
I wonder how his classes are going, you think, the last words heâd spoken to you rattle in your brain, you push the thoughts of him to the back of your mind. Running into him three times just seems impossible, right?

Caleb never had to struggle with revising, and the topics learnt in class typically came easy to him. He had designated time periods for focused work and was good at keeping to a schedule. Studying was his lifeline, his escape from Grandma Josephine, and the only way he could provide for MC, and yet⌠when his routine was disrupted, his sense of normalcy destroyed, he wasnât as worried as he thought he may be.
She was a breath of fresh airâthe only one he could truly relax around. He didnât have to be the protective Caleb, sacrificing his own life to uplift MCâs; he didnât have to be the reliable upperclassman, handing out his old notes and offering to play basketball when they were missing a player ; he didnât have to be the exemplar student, handing in all of his homework on time, and kissing up to teachers for extra academic validation. With her, his robin, he could be just Caleb, slightly annoying, really corny (according to her), and a little clumsy.
He didnât feel a need to pretend to be some perfect man that didnât truly exist, so when she first started to ask for help with school, he jokingly uttered, âWhy should I?â wriggling his eyebrows to irritate her. To this, she pressed both hands together, squeezed her eyes shut, and pleaded for his assistance. He always planned to help her anyway, so quickly gave in, and their study sessions began.
The first study session took place in a chain cafe, and Caleb arrived an hour early, ordering a lemonade and two apple pastries for the pair to share once she arrived. He took the time to review his own notes, making up for lost time spent tutoring her, and became quickly engrossed in his physics mindmaps. Maybe thatâs why, when she arrived, his heart dropped a little. He was just surprised, so focused on his work that the presence of another person shocked him. That could probably also explain why his throat became dry, he forgot how to form a proper sentence, and time seemed to slow down.
She pushed open the cafe door, almost tripping on the mat in front of her, and quickly locked eyes with Caleb. Her eyes began to sparkle in the sunlight, and her glossy hair bounced as she waved at him. The off-the-shoulder top revealed the strap of her purple bra, and Caleb tried his hardest to pretend like he wasnât staring, like an exposed shoulder wasnât heating his cheeks. He was a guy in his final year of high school, an 18-year-old man, not some prepubescent boy that had never seen a girlâs shoulder before. He needed to get a grip.
Grabbing the seat in front of him, she pulled it round, right next to his own chair, and a faint aroma of vanilla and coconut and everything perfect wafted around his nostrils making the drumming in his chest even louder. Maybe the cafe was a bit too warm, it was a summer day with some light breeze, but in a confined, cramped space like this, it was only normal the humidity would get to him.
âWhat are we starting with?â She hummed, her bare arm brushing his own. Focus.
âW-what? Oh⌠right. Well, I was doing physics so we can continue with that if you would like.â Caleb stuttered, clearing his throat before reaching for his drink.
âAwwww, Caleb youâre such a cutie!â She squealed, reaching her manicured fingers to pinch his cheeks. He was going to die in this cafe.
âH-huh?â A confused sound left Calebâs lips and he wondered if he had been caught before she picked up the pastry in front of them.
âHowâd you know I liked these? Youâre so attentive!â
âI got them âcause I liked them. They were doing a buy-one-get-one-free deal, so I couldnât pass up on the opportunity.â Caleb shrugged, managing to regain some more of his composure.
He always had a bad habit of lying to cover up his thoughtfulness. The idea of someone, especially someone like her, figuring out how much effort he put into helping others embarrassed him greatly. There was nothing more humiliating than someone finding out he wasnât naturally perfect, that his manufactured image was exactly thatâmanufactured. He could reveal more of his true self around her, let his guard down a little, but if she ever figured out how much he cared for her, then the mortification would send him to an early grave. He was grateful to even be able to tease her, voicing his true feelings about a skirt she wants to buy, or calling a guy she found attractive âan anomaly that crawled onto the earthââbut if she knew how pathetic he really was, how fast he would toss any sense of dignity or shame out the window if she felt the same, she wouldnât be able to see him the same anymore.
âOh, haha. Very funny. Why would they do a deal like that at a chain cafe? Itâs a shame, youâre getting muuuuch worse at lying. Maybe I can tutor you for that, itâs my field of expertise.â She lets out a fake laugh, then tilts her head to face him with a slight grin and squinted eyes. She should stop that. Doesnât she know how dangerous that is for his sanity?
What were they even here for anyway, a date? He prayed to God that would be the case, but quickly remembered their looming finals. Of course.
âLying wonât get you good grades, robin.â Caleb teased.
âUgh, youâre still calling me that? Iâm not some bird yâknow.â She scowled, taking a large bite out of the pastry on the plate.
âYet youâre always tweetinâ like one. Last time I checked, our exams are non-verbal. Letâs focus on the task at hand, âkay?â Caleb scoffed, enjoying riling her up. He quickly took control of the situation because he was here to study, not kind-of-not-really flirt with the girl heâs been in love with for the past 3 years.
Even if he wanted to focus, he couldnât. Every few minutes, her arm would bump against his, but she made no attempt to move further away. The cafe wasnât particularly loud, just slightly busy with light jazz playing through the speakers, and yet, whenever she had a question, she would whisper it into his ear and it drove him insane. She kept on repeating, âAm I doing it right?â while blinking her long, wispy eyelashes at him, and with every blink it felt like he was falling more and more in love with her.
By the end of the session, he couldnât remember anything he had said, and the most work he had gotten done occurred in the hour she was absent. He made a mental note to revise more at home, and walked her back to the train station, taking a seat next to her when it was revealed her train would be delayed.
âJust my luck!â She scoffed. But to him, this really was a lucky occurrence.
He hadnât wanted to go back to being perfect Caleb just yet. He wanted to continue laughing at childish jokes and irritating the girl he loved.
âYeah⌠I guess.â Caleb shrugged, holding the bag that he took from her in his arms, a gesture that he could write off as simply being âa good friendâ.
âCaleb, after finals are over we shouldââ her words were interrupted by the ringing of his phone.
He mutters a quick apology, and his eyes widen when he sees the contact. Itâs MC.
Squeezing as much cheer as possible into his voice, Caleb picks up, âHey pips! Whatâs up? Iâm on my way home now.â
He notices how she almost shrinks, how their legs no longer touch, how she pretends to focus on the other trains on the tracks. A small part of him wishes he hadnât picked up, but a larger, more filial part of him is glad that he did.
âCaleeeeeeb⌠Iâm in so much pain right now.â MCâs voice groans on the line, and a sense of panic reverberates through his body.
Did she break something? Was she sick? Or maybe it was a migraine, something he would have to pick up medicine for?
âDid you injure somethinâ? How badâs the pain? Need me to make it go away?â Caleb tried to hide the worry in his voice, scared that showing his fear would make her feel more panicked.
âMy cramps⌠they hurt so bad⌠Grannyâs out right now and I donât think I can make it to the store myself so could you please pick up some painkillers on your way back?â MC manages to force out the last few words, the pain making it difficult for her to manage.
A sigh of relief escapes Calebâs lips, he could only thank God that it wasnât anything that couldnât be fixed with some medicine and good rest. He thought about picking up some ingredients to make bone broth soup, and makes a note to centre their breakfast around red meat for tomorrow morning.
Ending the call, Caleb reassures MC that sheâll be fine and âher Calebâ will make it all better. To that, the girl gets up, brushing her hands on her jeans and lets him know that he can go if itâs urgent.
âYou sure? We can call until you get on the train if you want? I still have to run a couple of errands and you didnât get to finish before.â Caleb hurriedly gets up too, then hands her the bag.
âYeah, really. That was MC right? Sounded pretty serious, wouldnât want to get in the way.â She retorts, already facing away from him.
Caleb notices a change in attitude, but chooses not to comment on it. Already preoccupied with MCâs request, he rushes away telling her to call him when she gets home only to receive a noncommittal response.
