I love love love Harveyās obsession with his coin and it being portrayed as an OCD thing. Yes I do absolutely believe he uses it to externalize his decision to avoid feeling guilty for his actions, but itās also so clearly a compulsion, at least to me. His obsession with the number 2. The way everything has to be symmetrical. I love Harvey Dent and this man 100% has OCD.
Iāve heard some peopleās take on the coin as being a decision of which alter gets to make the choice, Harvey or Harv. However, 1. That doesnāt explain the obsession with twoās and 2. In many comics itās explicitly stated that Harv is stronger than Harvey and the more powerful identity; how would this be the case if itās a 50/50 chance which one gets to make the decision?
My alternate take I would like present is this: a portrayal of Harvey Dent who does not have DID, but instead, Harv is the manifestation of his intrusive thoughts caused by his OCD. Heās so disgusted by them that he views them as completely separate from himself in a way that, to him, manifested as a completely different personality or entity. He may have gone on to believe he had DID, meaning he thought he couldnāt fight the intrusive thoughts and he had no choice but to let Harv do what he wanted. This would make sense since OCD can cause dissociative symptoms, which he may mistake for confirmation that heās not in control. This perceived lack of control when faced with his intrusive thoughts mixed with the compulsion to enact the intrusive thoughts ends up with him actually committing those crimes, despite not wanting to.
Iāve also made myself sad writing this out because in this case, if the psychiatrists at Arkham were even semi-competent/Arkham wasnāt a complete shit hole, it would be so much easier for Harvey to reform and not be trapped in this cycle of violence that he desperately wants out of.
