The association or fresh and sweet exists in English as well - fresh (as in both unspoiled and unfermented) milk used to be called "sweet milk", unsalted butter designed to be eaten right away (as it would spoil without refrigeration) was sweet butter, and in medieval and early modern texts about hygiene, there was an emphasis on "smelling sweet". That didn't mean to wear a sweet perfume, but to not smell dirty or unwashed.
