New-age spirituality is nothing new for Rachel Crethar. 

“As I grew up my mom always kept our minds open to the things we couldn’t explain, and the magic of nature and the universe,” the Australian owner of crystal retailer Rock and Co tells Yahoo Canada Style. “She taught us to listen to our own instinct, and to live in flow--not push things--what is meant to be will be.” 

Those instincts stuck with Crethar in her teens and early 20s but as she got older she stopped doing things like tarot readings for friends. “I think as I ‘grew up’ and got a ‘real job’ it felt silly,” she says. 

But now she’s come full circle and embraced crystals again, not just for herself but for her business. And she’s not alone. As millennials who grew up in a world where yoga was mainstream move away from organized religion, they’re becoming increasingly interested in things that would once have been considered hippie territory only, like transcendental meditation and crystal therapy. 

“Over the past few years I have lent myself to the spiritual side and crystals were a natural progression from my love for yoga and meditation,” Ashley Bellino, owner of Stoned Crystals, tells Yahoo Canada News. She extended that interest into her business, which promotes crystals as a way to bring positive energy into your personal space in a modern way. 

Away from religion and towards spirituality 

Only about half of millennials are certain they believe in God and just 41 per cent consider religion very important in their lives, according to a Pew Research survey released last year. Older generations like baby boomers and seniors were much more likely to believe in God, consider religion important in their lives, and attend religious services regularly, Pew found. 

But that move away from more traditional ideas about religion doesn’t mean that millennials necessarily identify as atheists or don’t have a general sense of spirituality. Half of them feel a sense of spiritual well-being and peace, 46 per cent have a sense of wonder about the universe, and 55 per cent regularly think about the meaning of life, Pew found. 

Not necessarily connecting with or feeling beholden to traditional organized religion opens millennials up to exploring other avenues for expressing the sense of spirituality that they do hold. 

The decision to turn her interest in crystals into a business came when a piece of citrine--a crystal some associate with wealth and abundance--brought three financial wins for her family, Crethar says. Rock and Co began as a side project and now she has nearly 6,000 Instagram followers and ships crystals worldwide. 

Crethar believes that our high-stress, busy world is part of what is drawing the younger generation towards practices like crystals and meditation.  

“People are feeling disconnected from each other, staring at their devices instead of having quality time with their friends and family or nature and truly connecting with the environment around them,” Crethar says. “Because of this, they are feeling more stressed, more anxious and looking for ways to reduce this.” 

Bellino thinks that the growing interest in businesses like hers is an extension of the focus on natural skincare and cosmetics and organic food. “People are becoming more aware of alternative therapies and our connection to the earth and its effect on the mind, body, and soul,” she says. “We are craving the raw and organic not only in our diets but also in the things we wear and adorn our spaces with.”

 Celebrities are also fuelling the trend. Khloe Kardashian was filmed shopping for crystals for Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and model Miranda Kerr blogged about using crystals during meditation and deep breathing. Singer Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast is interested in astrology, and ‘90s teen star Andrew Keegan now runs a new-age church in Los Angeles. 

That trendiness helps to make crystals and other modern spiritual interests more accessible and break them from the old hippie stereotypes, Bellino says.

“I hope to be instrumental in making crystals on trend and giving people simple steps on how they can integrate them into their lives by sharing tips and concepts on how to style them, as well as keeping the integrity of their energy and tradition alive,” Bellino says. 

And increasingly, spirituality is big business. New wearables from Fitbit and Apple have apps for guided breathing exercises. Jewellery lines like Tiny Devotions and Alix and Ani are best-sellers. Urban Outfitters sells books on crystal healing and creative mindfulness, and upscale spiritual retreats that cost hundreds of dollars to attend sell out. 

One religion expert believes those ties with consumer culture may be a big part of what’s fuelling millennial interest in spirituality to begin with. “Spirituality is what consumer capitalism does to religion,” University of Virginia academic Matthew Hedstrom said in an interview done with a university publication last year. “The millennial approach to spirituality seems to be about choosing and consuming different ‘religious products’--meditation, or prayer, or yoga, or a belief in heaven--rather than belonging to an organized congregation.” 

Regardless of what’s fuelling this interest in modern spirituality, does any of this have measurable real-world effects? Some of the practices popular with those interested in spirituality in a general sense have some scientific backing. For example, several studies indicate that regular meditation does have several physiological benefits. 

However, scientifically speaking there’s not a lot of provable evidence behind crystal healing and some other hallmarks of modern spirituality. Research done at the University of London in the early 2000s found no real differences in those who meditated with or without crystals in their hands, for example. 

But for devotees it’s not about studies and research, but what their interpretation spirituality--with crystals or anything else--means to them individually. 

“I don’t believe in setting fake expectations that crystals are going to help ‘heal’ conditions and I think it’s a big part of why they have been cast aside,” Bellino says. “But by setting our crystals with positive intentions, we are manifesting a world we wish to be a part of.”

At Sheldon-Williams Collegiate in Regina, the week starts with Mindful Mondays: high-school students spend time one morning a week focused on meditation, yoga, aspirations, and deep breathing instead of the usual teen stressors of tests, social media, and university applications. 

Similar programs are popping up at schools across the country, from kindergarten through high school. Educators are incorporating some form of mindfulness practice—yoga, meditation, positive affirmations, gratitude journals—into the day along with tests and lessons. And yoga studios and meditation centres are offering classes for kids from St. John’s to Vancouver. 

Research shows that even small measures to introduce students to the benefits of practices like mediation or calming breathing can have a positive effect on their studies—and their stress levels.

“We’ve studied introducing integrative therapies in three different clinical studies in high schools,” Dr. Nada Milosavljevic, director of the integrative health program at Massachusetts General Hospital, tells Yahoo Canada Style. “Everything from acupuncture to aromatherapy to sound therapy, and we’re providing education as well." 

Milosavljevic’s research was aimed at high-school students dealing with anxiety and stress and results published about a year ago showed that mindfulness-focused therapies made a big difference. 

“For the students who were going through the program we found that we were able to decrease their anxiety symptoms by over a third, which was pretty amazing,” Milosavljevic says. 

Adolescents, who increasingly deal with a variety of stressors both in and out of the classroom. Academic stressors are most serious for a third of Grade 7 students, according to a survey of 900 of them done by the Canadian Education Association research team, followed by family conflicts (31 per cent), peer conflicts (21 per cent), and conflict between parents (14 per cent). 

In that same survey, some of the same adolescents reported dealing with stress in unhealthy ways including drug and alcohol use or engaging in unprotected sex (7 per cent), self harming behaviours like cutting or burning (7 per cent), or playing video games to excess (6 per cent). 

This gives a sense of both the stressors kids face and the importance of teaching them positive ways to manage the stress and anxiety that can result. 

“They’re very stressed out. They have a lot of pressures from a lot of different sources,” Milosavljevic says. “It's hard for them to really unplug and induce a sense of calm." 

The good news is that the students she worked with in her research were open to learning how to manage that stress with new approaches including yoga poses, pressure points, and meditation practices, Milosavljevic says.

 “Surprisingly they were willing to adopt them very readily,” Milosavljevic says. “A lot of them started to use these treatments on their own, which was wonderful to see." 

But mindfulness has a place for younger students as well, Kathy Walsh, a mindfulness expert and author, tells Yahoo Canada Style. Her mindfulness program for children, Peace Place for Kids, teaches children about positive thinking and gratitude along with mindfulness practices. 

“When I’m with the kids in person, I do a lot about feelings your feelings and I notice that the kids open up a lot and tell me about things that are hurting them or making them feel sad,” Walsh says. “Every day is so busy that they don’t have a space in their lives to feel their feelings." 

Walsh has been meditating daily herself for 30 years and passed the practices along to her own children before realizing that she should share them more widely. Having begun her work before mindfulness was a buzz word, she’s gratified to see the way programs like hers have caught on in recent years. 

“I’m excited that it’s finally catching on,” Walsh says. “Most of the people I deal with are so greatful that somebody’s doing this. But it is a new beginning and I’m sure there’s people that are not understanding the value of it yet."

For parents and educators who do want to introduce similar practices for their children, a specialized program isn’t required. Both Walsh and Milosavljevic say that there are many simple ways to introduce mindful practices like yoga, meditation, and calming breathing into the day, even with just a few minutes to spare. 

Focused breathing with the intention of bringing peaceful feelings inward and positive feelings outward can make a big difference in just a few minutes, Walsh says, as can practices like writing in a gratitude journal or ending the school day with positive affirmations. 

Technology can also play a role in reaching a generation already comfortable with digital solutions to problems. Milosavljevic’s company Sage Tonic offers an app focused on the different senses that gives quick tips for relaxation, such as pressure points to use and relaxing poses to hold. Headspace is one of a variety of new meditation apps that focuses on practicing for just a few minutes a day and guides users through the process, and Cosmic Kids teaches younger children yoga and meditation in a colourful online environment. 

Children easily see the benefits of these efforts, Walsh says, and she hopes to impress upon parents and teachers that time spent on deep breathing and yoga poses has value in and out of the classroom. 

“They’re learning tools. they’re learning real techniques,” Walsh says. “This isn’t airy-fairy stuff."

There’s no denying that smartphones have done wonders for our lives. But there are a few drawbacks, besides being huge contributors to procrastination. Maybe your fingers start to get tired from scrolling or your stomach a bit nauseous from all that screen time, but what about your neck? Sure, it can get a bit sore -- but have you given thought to all that skin? Dermatologists have, and they call it “tech neck,” a term given to the ever-deepening crease above your clavicle and another one to add to your constantly-increasing skin vocabulary.

A British study conducted earlier this year found that most people between the ages of 18 and 39 look down at their laptop, phone, or tablet 150 times a day. And while all this screen time is distracting, it can also be detrimental.

“The neck takes a lot of wear and tear,” says Dr. Paul Cohen, a Toronto-based dermatologist at the Rosedale Dermatology Centre. Because people aren’t as diligent with sunscreen and skincare on the neck, he adds, it tends to age more quickly. What’s more, “with all these gadgets, it increases the neck wrinkle,” he explains.

Besides making sure to extend SPF 30 (or 50)  beyond the chin, there are a few other products Cohen recommends for a better looking neck. Look for creams and serums with glycolic and hyaluronic acid, he says, the former being a collagen regenerator, the latter, an effective moisturizer and skin plumper. Skin care brands, like Talika and Eminence, have also taken note of the neck, creating sheet masks and creams for the delicate and oft-neglected area.

If cosmetic procedures are your desired route, lasers are the most common choice, but Cohen says he is most excited about Belkyra, a new deoxycholic acid injectable aimed at eliminating a double chin, but also effective at firming up the neck skin.

Another key part in maintaining a smooth neck -- hydration. This may seem obvious for any skin ailment or issue, but as the discs in the spine are made up mostly of water, the importance of staying hydrated is three-fold: to keep the muscles in your neck flexible, to prevent stiffness and to maintain elasticity and plumpness in the skin.

That persistent downward gaze can do more than superficial damage. It can also wreak havoc on your posture, causing long-term damage to spine alignment. To help keep your neck and back in check, Google Play has created Text Neck, an app that monitors the position of your head and neck, providing the user with real-time feedback regarding posture.

A new study out of the U.K. determines there’s yet another game-changing advantage to drinking lots of water. Yes, the liquid life-force that keeps our skin dewy and energy levels high is also proven to help with short-term memory. The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, show that drinking water boosts your memory’s performance.

The stud observed 101 undergraduate students exposed to temperatures of 30 Ctemperature for four hours, on three occasions. Participants either drank 300 ml of water, or didn't, and then performed a series of memory tests. The students' body temperature and weight were evaluated and urine samples were taken before and during the study.

Researchers discovered that participants who didn't drink water during the study found the tests more challenging than those who stayed hydrated.

Can it get any easier to strengthen your brain’s capabilities by simply staying hydrated? Why, yes, it in fact, in can. Dr. Kim Christie, director of research at Okanagan Clinical Trials in Kelowna, B.C., shares five other easy ways to help keep your memory on point.

Water

Exercise

Like water, the benefits of regular exercise are encouraging. “The thing we know for sure that helps your memory is getting exercise every day,” says Christie. “That’s cardiovascular exercise, which increases your heart rate. We know that supplies more oxygen to the brain as well as the muscles you’re working.” A sped-up heart rate provides more nutrients to the brain, which makes it work more efficiently.

Diet

Christie says the most brain-friendly foods can be found in the so-called Mediterranean diet, which consists of lots of leafy greens and olive oils. “You want to eat a balanced diet, which really helps in keeping your memory,” says Christie. “If you eat too many fats and sugars, it slows down the whole functioning of your body.” She explains that the brain also need a certain amount of healthy fats, the structural protein that keeps our brains insulated. That’s how the cells “talk” to each other. Healthy fats can be found in fish and avocados. “You want to be eating healthy and efficiently so your body can take all the proper nutrients out really easily,” she says. “It helps keep your brain moving as efficiently as possible.”

Sleep

If you need another reason to catch more zzzs, consider how much a solid night’s rest can help your brain’s performance. Christie suggests seven to eight hours of sleep a night should keep it in fine form. “If you’re not sleeping properly, your brain has a tough time doing even simple activities,” she says. “It will definitely affect your short-term memory.”

Stay social

People who are socially engaged as they age have better memories than people who socially isolate themselves. Socializing means the connections your brain is making is keeping those areas associated with memory engaged. “As soon as you socially isolate yourself, those circuits aren’t being used, and you aren’t using a big chunk of your brain function,” explains Christie. “You need to keep all areas active.”

When Haley Smith agreed to marry the man of her dreams, it wasn’t the only life-changing decision she was about to make.

For the 24-year-old was so upset and embarrassed by seeing herself in her official proposal pictures that she promised to completely change her health and fitness regime too.

When Haley’s fiancé Matt Smith got down on one knee in July 2015, the psychology student weighed 274 lbs, and despite the moment being one of the happiest times of her life, Haley admits she cried her eyes out when she saw the pictures of herself in the shots.

It was the push she needed for the bride-to-be to overhaul her diet and fitness habits so she could finally feel body confident enough to walk down the aisle.

“I didn’t even recognise myself,” Haley told Caters News of the moment she saw the proposal pictures.

But it wasn’t just the way she looked Haley was unhappy about, it was also the effects her weight was having on other aspects of her life and health.

“I was fed up with getting chafing on all of my body parts that rubbed and sweat,” she said. “I couldn’t sleep, had aches and pains all over my body, high blood pressure, poor complexion, heartburn and got headaches practically every day,” she said.

Determined to get healthier in time for her wedding, Haley vowed that she would make her engagement year, the year she revamped her lifestyle.

Ditching junk-food in favour of fruit and vegetables and exercising daily, Haley found she quickly lost weight and more importantly she saw a rapid improvement in the excess sweating and joint pains she was experiencing.  

Last Saturday, having lost an incredible 110 lbs, Haley tied the knot with her childhood sweetheart and showcased her new 165 pound physique in a fitted, strapless, lace wedding dress.

Haley credits her new husband’s unconditional love with helping her journey to body confidence.

“He even loved me enough to propose to me at my highest weight when I was feeling unlovable. He has seen me at my best and my worst,” Haley told Caters.

For their honeymoon, the couple are planning an action-packed trip to New Zealand, something Haley never expected she’d be fit enough to go on.

“A year ago, I wouldn’t have been able to hike on a glacier, go mountain climbing, feel confident snorkelling and many of the other activities we have planned. It’s going to be a trip of a lifetime.”

Navigating fall/winter trends can be daunting enough without having to stress about cleaning and caring for those cold-weather staples in the face of unpredictable weather. From boho-chic suede to luxurious velvet, read more for how to prep, clean and take care of the season’s most stylish (and trickiest) fabrics.

Leather

There’s nary a season on fashion’s calendar that doesn’t include a bit of leather.  And while you know to spray your knee-high boots before heading outside, are you doing the same with your new pencil skirt or cross-body bag?  Depending on how often you wear the item in question, David Mesquita, of New York City’s premium leather service shop The Leather Spa, says you should be spraying with a water repellent once every few weeks, to seal the pores of the leather. If your leather gets wet and dirty, let it dry, he says, and then clean with a leather shampoo as soon as possible, followed by a leather conditioner.

As for your leather Louboutins or buttery nappa jacket, take heed: a regular shoe shop or dry-cleaner might not quite know how to treat these pricey pieces.  “Usually the more expensive the item, the more delicate the leather,” Mesquita explains, so it’s best to stick to a leather expert.

Mesquita also recommends a bit of practicality when it comes to leather.  “Always ask yourself, ‘is it worth it to wear it in this weather, just to look good?’”

Suede

Leather may be classic and badass, but suede is the sophisticated sibling, finding its way all over this season’s runways and probably into your closet. But how do you take care of it?

First, check the weather. A post-work downpour can wreak havoc on that new suede mini, but a few droplets of moisture can be eradicated using a handy suede brush and eraser, says Mesquita. Suede is made from the underside of goat or lambskin, and the fibres are like little hairs on open pores, so “the smart thing to do is clean and treat it as soon as possible,” Mesquita recommends.

Velvet

Velvet is not for the wallflower or sensually-disinclined. The plush fabric sashayed down many a fall runway and is now a mainstay as the days grow shorter. But as you navigate street style blogs and Pinterest for a little velvet inspo, keep in mind the soft fabric may need some special care.

Though most synthetic velvet is made with rayon, polyester, or nylon, authentic velvet is made with silk (thus, priced accordingly), and requires a bit more than a hurried cold hand wash in the sink. New York-based The Launderess advises that velvet be spot cleaned and then dabbed with a dry cloth to absorb any water -- but not before doing a water-test on the underside of the garment, along the seam, just in case.

Wool

The northern hemisphere’s harsh winter sees a good chunk of the population swaddled in wool, but moisture can really take a toll on those much-loved sweaters, hats and coats.

Nicole Sibonney, the founder of Toronto’s Americo Original, says the key to preserving wool is to take care of it immediately.

“Unfortunately with everyone being so busy, some tend to just put away all their winter wool stuff and only decide to wash the items when it is time to wear them again,” she said. Instead, wool should be cleaned and placed into dry storage when not being worn. Sibonney, whose company specializes in natural fibers from South America, recommends washing wool with a natural detergent, either by hand or on a delicate cycle, and then rolling the garment in a towel to gently squeeze out moisture. For those in a rush, she says a quick blast of cool air in the dryer can add some fluff to wool with no harm.

Sibonney also swears by The Gleener, a tool used to remove pesky pills and fuzz from sweaters and knits, though a drugstore razor can work as well.

It’s finally starting to feel like fall -- and if there’s one thing we love more than the crisp days and deliciously-flavoured beverages, it’s that it’s officially cold enough to wear our autumn favourites.

There’s no question that Hillary Clinton is a powerhouse politician and inspiration to millions of women across the world. But whatever you do, don’t follow her lead when it comes battling a bug. The U.S. Democratic candidate proved she wasn’t invincible after continuing on the campaign trail despite being diagnosed with pneumonia. That decision led to her collapse at a 9-11 memorial last week, which wrecked havoc on her campaign.

Let Clinton’s misjudgment be a case study in why it’s bad a choice to go to work when you’re sick. If you still needed convincing, here are some prime pointers to consider before heading to the office in zombie-mode.

You’ll infect your co-workers

When you show up to work a sneezing, coughing mess, you have the power to infect everyone around you. That’s not the kind of power you want in the workplace.

“Droplets in the air that land on surfaces is a common way for viruses to spread,” says Stephen Wetmore, Chair of Department of Family Medicine at Western University's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

You even have the potential to contaminate faucets and countertops with your grubby, under-the-weather hands, so that unsuspecting Joan in accounting will have what you’re having. Talk about bad office etiquette.

You’re not fooling anyone

When you’re battling an illness, it’s pretty noticeable. Think the opposite of poised: Your complexion becomes pale, your posture slacks and your voice sounds gravely and congested. So while you can attempt at going about things normally, your coworkers know what’s going on.

“Often your colleagues will recognize that you’re sick,” says Wetmore. “Even if you don’t. They’ll notice you’re not acting in the same way. Colleagues are sensitive to that kind of stuff.”

You won’t be as productive

If you think you’ll be working at your full capacity while your body is fighting a sickness, you’re being delusional. It’s your immune system that should be working overtime. When you’re exerting the energy to be at work, you’re not working at feeling better, which ultimately results in a poorer performance.

“You probably aren’t going to be very productive when you’re sick,” says Wetmore. “You won’t be concentrating on your job as well, even though you think you might.”

You’re making yourself worse

The energy you’re spending getting out of your PJs, commuting on the crowded subway and then trying to be productive at work is taking away from energy that could (and should) be spent getting better.

“Being at work and trying to force yourself to do things can be more overtiring and more taxing on your system,” says Wetmore. “It might make it harder for you to recover and it might take more time.”

It could also lead to complications, which might not have happened if you chose to rest at home. So don’t risk staying sick for longer than you need to be – it could make you worse.

When you’re sick, make resting a priority. It will save time in the long run, which is something Hilary Clinton probably wished she’d considered.

Kate Hudson -- Grade: A-

One of the most talked-about looks from this year’s red carpet -- and for good reason! For the “Deepwater Horizon” premiere, Hudson walked the red carpet in a semi-sheer, lacy Alexander McQueen gown with sequined detailing. The only thing that could have made this look better? Ditch the pearls in favour of something a little tougher and go for loose waves. 

Amy Adams -- Grade: A+

Sometimes, simplicity really is best -- especially when it’s in the form of this gorgeous one-shouldered white column gown that perfectly showcased Amy Adams’s figure. Combined with Veronica Lake-style curls, this look screams old Hollywood glam.

This stunning red gown fits like a glove, and the collar detailing is incredible -- just not sure about the cut of the shoulders.

This is fun, and a nice departure from Jen’s usual looks, but it would be better as a mini.

Green Gucci is a surefire recipe for success -- but this frock left 22-year-old Dakota Fanning looking much younger than she really is.

It’s not awful, but ScarJo can do so much better.

The Oscar winner went for something a little different than her usual on the red carpet -- and while we appreciate the stunning detailing of this Alexander McQueen gown, Larson seems more suited to something like what she wore at this year’s Oscars.

Slip dress with tee

Dear exhausted moms,

I’ll start off by ensuring you that I’m not going to get all preachy and self-righteous. Yes, my almost one-year-old son sleeps through the night, but that wasn’t always the case. I know all too well what it’s like to be an exhausted mom. But this by no means make me an expert on your baby. I have one baby and I’m (sort of) an expert on that one, in a mom’s-intuition sort of way. That’s it.

What I do know are lots of facts about sleep from hours of researching. Because in moments of stress, I research. Obsessively. Ask my husband, it’s not pretty. In the first few months of my son’s life, I desperately googled during every spare moment to find strategies that might help me extend my maximum of two consecutive hours of sleep.

I should be clear that it’s totally normal to be exhausted until your pediatrician says your child is old enough and weighs enough to be able to sleep through the night. It’s different for every baby, but on average, babies start being able to sleep through the night around six months old. I knew when my son was ready. At a certain point, when I would try to nurse him in the middle of the night, he would suckle for a minute and just fall back asleep. I knew it was a habit, and I knew he needed sleep more than he needed food at night.

By trial error and, more likely, sheer luck of my son’s temperament and personality, I found a method that worked to help my son sleep through the night at 4 months old. As a new mom without many close friends with kids, I assumed that everything that happened with my baby was the norm. But once I started going to playgroups and meeting other moms, I realized that there are so many exhausted moms with older babies who don’t sleep or nap well.

This is not OK. And not in a “you’re doing something wrong” sort of way. In a “sleep deprivation is literally torture, how are you surviving?” sort of way.

So this open letter is to establish that you’re not alone, it sucks, and it doesn’t have to be this way.

The issue here is I don’t have “The Answer” (cue heavenly harp music). Every baby is different, and moms have different priorities. Some moms are OK with cry-it-out, some moms aren’t. Some moms want to co-sleep, some moms don’t. Some moms are breastfeeding, some moms are formula feeding. All of these differences have an effect on choosing the best way for your family to get some sleep.

There are so many great sleep methods out there, but it’s not actually about the method – it’s about your mindset and approach. So in that vein, I have three universal pieces of advice that will work, regardless of your priorities as a mom. I know these tips will help you get on the right track, and hopefully in a few months time you will no longer be an exhausted mom:

1. Pick one method based on your priorities, and be consistent.

Firstly, do your research, but be careful. There are lots of amazing sleep strategies online, but the Internet and social media have a way of overloading us with conflicting information that make us doubt our instincts as parents; scare tactics make us think if we do X we’re going to ruin our child. Don’t fall for that. Check forums and see what other like-minded moms are saying, but take everything with a grain of salt. Use all of that information as inspiration, not as a bible. Don’t search endlessly for a “perfect” solution, because that doesn’t exist. Be logical. Make a decision based on what you think is right and would work for your family.

Once you’ve selected a method or routine that you’re comfortable with, stick with it for two weeks straight, without exception. If after two weeks, you don’t see an improvement and you’re not happy with how things are going, try something else.

The worst thing I did when I was an exhausted mom was read about a method, get all excited, try it half-assed for a week, then give up. It’s hard to do something 100 per cent when you can barely keep your eyes open. My son finally slept through the night once I picked something, sucked it up and was consistent. I also made sure my husband was on board, because that support and encouragement helped make it possible for us to stick it out together for the long haul.

2. Make sure you are happy and feel mentally and physically well

You know the cliché airplane oxygen mask parenting metaphor where you should put your own mask on before you put one on your child? It’s so simple, but so accurate. As a parent, if you don’t take care of yourself first, you can’t be the parent your children need. This also applies to sleep.

We know that sleep is crucial for our children’s development and equally crucial for your sanity. Your child’s sleep is important, but so is yours. So make sure when you’re deciding on a sleep method, pick something that works for baby and you. Don’t forget about your own needs. Taking care of yourself is also helping your baby.

3. You’re there to advocate for your child when they can’t. Set boundaries.

You’re reading this because you need some freaking sleep and so does your baby. In order to make this happen, this means that you’re going to have to set boundaries around you and your baby.

If you know your baby’s going to get overtired, become a crying mess and refuse to sleep if he goes down for his nap too late, it doesn’t matter that Uncle Steve is running late and won’t get to see the baby. He won’t be the one to suffer – you and baby are.

This is where honesty and boundaries are crucial to creating good sleep habits. If any of your loved ones don’t understand that keeping the little one awake past his nap time will result in a screaming baby and flustered mom, it’s OK to be blunt with them. A lot of parents who haven’t had a small baby in a while forget these things. You need to decide what you and your baby need and be firm.

That’s essentially the basis of establishing good sleep habits – being decisive, consistent and firm.

I want to wrap up by reminding you that you are seriously supermom. I barely remember the first four months of my son’s life because I was so deliriously tired. I had the most important job in the world -- keeping this tiny helpless human alive – all while I felt like I was tripping on acid.

I can’t even fathom being that exhausted for six months, nine months, a year, two years. Society makes us feel like we need to be supermoms; we should be martyrs. But this isn’t true. You deserve to sleep, and you should scour the earth the find a way to sleep, whatever it is. Taking care of yourself is the best gift you can give your baby. Don’t ever feel guilty about taking care of yourself.

Show your baby that self-care is crucial to happiness. I know you want your baby to grow up thinking his or her happiness is important, so model that behaviour. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not going to be easy. It will take time and effort to figure out the best solution for your family. But I promise you, it’s worth the effort to ensure you’re the best, happiest, well-rested version of yourself – for yourself and your baby.

Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui’s name was frequently in the news during the recent Rio Olympics, but not for her outstanding performance in the 4x100 relay medley. Instead, the 20-year-old received a virtual standing ovation when she told CCTV news her period had started the night before, leaving her feeling weak, and unable to swim as quickly as she had hoped.

While not the first to mention her period in post-competition reflection, Yuanhu’s frank admission does shrug off any taboos regarding period-talk and raises the question: what exactly are the best exercises to do when you’re surfing the crimson wave?

Staying regularly active is one of the best antidotes to PMS and period-related complaints, but if you’re in pain or too tired, taking a break from working out to relax and maybe watch a season (or two) on Netflix is ok too.

Walking

A good, old-fashioned stroll through your neighbourhood or nearby park is an easy and low-impact way to raise your heart beat during your period.  A 2015 study suggests that women’s lung capacity decreases during the menstrual cycle, so any high-intensity activity or one involving endurance and stamina is not ideal (so, maybe not a competitive race).

Yoga

Forego the handstand or any sort of pose that requires heavy breathing or abdominal twisting, in favour of something gentle and slow. If you’re having cramps, try this video to alleviate any pain.

Swimming

Despite Yuanhui’s comments (and obvious post-race pain), swimming is a great, low-impact exercise during that time of the month. Not only is it easy on the muscles, but it also releases calming endorphins, which are always welcome when those mood swings hit.

Though some may be squeamish to swim while menstruating, Dr. Jen Gunter of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology told People that contrary to pesky rumours floating around, water does not flush out period blood and the myth that period blood contaminates pools is unfounded. This comes after a public pool in Tbilisi, Georgia posted a controversial sign forbidding menstruating women to swim.

Cycling

Not a lot of sports replace usual time spent sedentary, like commuting to work via car or public transportation, which makes cycling one of the easiest activities to incorporate into your daily routine. Enjoying a new route or cruising down that hill can also be a mood-booster -- handy during those hormonal shifts.

Sex

These are just a few of the daily struggles we women go through to look good, and 21-year-old Romanian-Canadian artist Cassandra Calin totally gets it. But instead of commiserating with us over our hardships, she’s making ladies laugh at the ridiculousness of our lives with beautiful yet all too real comics.

This Comic Knows the Struggle of Being a Woman Is Real

While Calin, a cartoonist, illustrator and graphic designer based in Montreal, draws comics inspired by her life, “first world problems and goofy stuff in general,” she taps into the lives of women all over the world, finding the humor in annoying situations we can all relate to. Like, picking up a normal looking sweater only to realize it’s a crop top.

Or feeling really good about going makeup-free, until someone asks, “what’s wrong?”

One of our favorites is her truth series about hair.

“All my hair comics and jokes are ideas I’ve got after struggling with my hair that day,” Calin told Epoch Times. “I eventually made a list of things that annoy me about my hair and I drew everything based on that. There were so many things I wanted to talk about that I even made a second part to my 9 truths series about having long hair.”

It takes her two to four hours to draw a comic, like this one about the misery that is shopping for swimsuits.

When she’s not drawing comics, the self-taught artist likes to sleep, according to her FAQ page.

She just gets us.
