I heard it was mermay so here is my humble contribution, it’s Maglor of course 😌
Pose reference by @adorkastock (go check it, it’s free and very fun !!!) and professional enabling by @peasant-player
Recommendation for artwork by and of Black people: the covers of The Legendborn Cycle by Tracy Deonn. Cover artwork by Hillary D Wilson.
Sending these in bc they're great inspiration but also they're absolutely STUNNING and GORGEOUS and more people should see them, that lighting and colour and hair! 🤩
Yes, this one gets recommended often!
Reading and rereading and rereading all of your Pokemon stuff and realizing that. I, too, could create a Pokemon world. A harrowing and sobering thought.
How do you balance worldbuilding with storytelling? Do they conflict with each other at all for you? At what point do you stop fantasizing and start making?
Yay another one! Making stuff up is an open sandbox so the entrance requirements are really low
To me, the worldbuilding feeds into the storytelling and vice versa, and the balancing act is both of them vs my motivation to write and draw (which is very limited)
Pokemon is great in that it is a genre(?) and you can get pretty far just "filling in the forms", so to speak. This is not to say you Have to have all the features of a pokemon world fleshed out, ultimately you're the one deciding what fun looks like to you
Ex. What's the local legendary? I like Darkrai, so I picked it. I then have to justify my decision, which means it and the region now have Lore (worldbuilding). And it being there means that letting it meet Mewtwo would be interesting, so I figure out how and why they'd meet each other (storytelling). And figuring out Darkrai's dialogue created some additional linguistics features (worldbuilding) (this I haven't written down yet because I want to get the story out first)
Basically, it's more enjoyable and memorable if you can introduce an aspect of the worldbuilding via the story, and then explain it afterwards. Therefore, the function of the New Thing should be fairly intuitive so as not to cause confusion ("Witch Hat Atelier has flying carriages and they work because of a spell of some sort") and the explanation of its mechanism and background can come in later and make people appreciate it more ("the spell is a magic circle and here are its components") on top of giving them more info to intuit later ("this is also a magic item therefore there's a magic circle somewhere in it")
But!! This is only relevant if your goal is to entertain an audience and write a good story. If it's not a major drive behind your work then there's nothing stopping you from just doing whatever looks fun. You likely don't have to sell it, after all. In my case, I'm a tryhard who likes getting attention for pulling off difficult manoeuvres, and constant improvement is fun to me (if it's easy then it's boring), so maybe don't copy my standards kgksjgkskf
As for when to get off my ass and draw instead of fantasizing... As soon as I have one complete idea. I just focus on a single concept at a time (telepathy, language basics, move invention, pokemon and genders, ect) and while the threads for other concepts float in my head and get implemented in the story (professional competitive trainers, the local league structure, language register for conflict, pre-contact pokemon names, ect), I'm not fleshing them out until I'm done with whatever is on my plate first
the contrast is crazy

This sick bleach shirt I made. Something to showcase my undying love for prehistoric cave art.
Some of the bleach burned thru the shirt bc this was my first time bleaching anything ever, but it kinda adds to it.
I read the latest chapter, and a question keep corcling in my mind; why was Lizardtail the one confronting Firestar on how everyone's worried about him, instead of, say, Greystripe, Ravenwing, Goldenflower, or even Dustpelt?
I found it curious because, in canon, the two of them had a rivalry that got fixed with time, but in Redux, they haven't interacted a lot 'till now, so why did the choice fell on him?
The main answer is that Lizardtail had not done a fucking thing in this book, so my beta suggested he try talking to Firestar just to give him some screentime. The in-universe answer is that Lizardtail had some experience with struggling young cats (Swifttail), so he thought he could at least try using the skills he developed there to help his leader. It didn't work, obviously, but it's the thought that counts.
This is true!
You'd think pokemon gender roles are simpler because there's little emphasis on genitals and nearly everyone uses it/its but it's more complicated actually

when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).
Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.
I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.

Sorry I started sobbing uncontrollably when you expressed the slightest concern for my lack of human connection, and casually mentioned you think I deserve better than a life of isolation and loneliness. Super weird. Not sure what was up with that lol. You still think I’m cool and mysterious and sexy, right?
The old school lack of transparency on tumblr is amazing because you assume the people you follow must all be equivalent to you and then you see someone write “I brought my youngest to college today” and someone else write “my mom wouldn’t let me listen to Ariana Grande when I was a kid” and then your head explodes
and we need that! keeps us humble.
Then I'm just like WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU’RE AN ADULT
It goes the other way, too, because WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE A CHILD?!!
I'm 16, that's like, barely a child
I'm in my 30s. You are baby
I'm older than both of you in a trenchcoat.
honestly one of the best things we can do for ourselves is realize that people of different ages than us can still be the same kind of person as us. it's humbling and it gives everyone involved a sense of continuity, and it busts those stupid generational stereotypes media is so fond of.
It would be kind of fun to have a medical dramamedy show where people (patients and people in the medical field) could submit their craziest experiences with the medical system and those plotlines and patient stories could be dramatized and woven into a cohesive narrative with any additional profits from the show going to pay off medical debt.
Plotline A: Patient is suffering from a near fatal case of hypothermia after passing out in the snow drunk and laying there all night until his 13 year old nephew discovered him in the morning, said 13 year old managed to transport his druncle to the hospital on a snowmobile but the rest of the family cannot make it there due to road conditions.
Plotline B: A live rat fell through the ceiling halfway through an emergency appendectomy, causing the surgeon to startle and rupture the patient’s appendix. Infectious disease is very interested in the situation due to the risk of zoonotic infection. The hospital’s legal department is also very interested in the situation.
Hey OP what happened to you

It feels like I’ve talked about this before, but to me the funniest version of Portal is if Chell is deaf.
Like, most of the major story beats, at least the ones that directly affect her, have a prominent visual component so she’s following along with the basics. But she has no idea who cave johnson is, or what wheatley was trying to explain to her, and she certainly wasn’t hurt by any of glados’ insults.
but the best part of this headcanon is imagining glados checking chell’s personnel file years down the line, noticing the word “deaf” for the first time, and just going “WHAT???”
Glados learning sign language so Chell can hear at least one of her excellent monologues and Chell just closes her eyes
