i was half-serious last night when i said sasuke questioning whether or not naruto needs him but i have not stopped thinking about it at all. because yes, any outsider knows how devoted naruto is to sasuke. there's no questioning it when he's twelve and almost breaks the seal on the nine-tails when he thinks sasuke has died. there's no questioning it when he tells jiraiya that if chasing after sasuke makes him a fool, he will "gladly be a fool" for the rest of his life. and there's also no questioning it when he has a breakdown when it's suggested to him that sasuke will be tried as a criminal and executed if needed. and naruto's very clear about it to sasuke as well when he repeatedly asserts that he cares about sasuke: he says he will bear the burden of sasuke's hatred and die with him; he laments over the (im)possibility of a different life where they could understand one another fully. he tells sasuke repeatedly that their relationship is the dear because sasuke was the first person to understand him.
but i cannot help but think of how it registers for sasuke, especially post-canon. because the truth is of course that sasuke is not there to witness naruto declaring how he doesn't care if chasing after sasuke is wasted effort, he doesn't see naruto falling apart at the thought of sasuke dying. he sees naruto chasing after him, each time he asks naruto why naruto insists on meddling in his business and doesn't leave him alone, he is told by naruto that it's because he cares. but he doesn't know the extent of the care and he never will, i suppose? he sees naruto become the hokage and be accepted and sasuke of course knows logically that naruto cares about him but whether or not he's needed is questionable because naruto has other people who care about him. he is by the end of the story, konoha's hero—loved and admired. but even before the end of the story, he is loved and admired by people in a way that sasuke actively rejects throughout because he is so caught up in his own feelings of revenge.
sasuke of course, knows this. he declares that "this is naruto's world. [he is] blessed to exist". and insofar as sasuke left and returns only because of naruto's pursuit of him, what binds him to naruto is far greater than what binds naruto to him? and i think sasuke would know this in the post-canon. and i wonder constantly how that registers: to know that the person he loves most and who he is in every way beholden to is not bound to him in the same way.
