She had always struggled to have balance between good and evil and is partial to the former. She’s usually inclined to using her powers to capture and torture those who abuse the darkness of the night to commit malicious and ill-intentioned acts. She loves her family to a fault, wherein she will use her powers to protect them at all costs.

‎‏‏‎ 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞: Brooke Alstreim established and owns Isla Astralis, an island resort in the Bahamas, along with her sister Erin Alstreim. This takes up most of her time as a businesswoman but on some nights she works at bars and nightclubs as a bottle service worker to entertain herself. Her other hobbies include reading and lounging on the beach, fully immersed in the mundane world of humans. She can be bubbly and fun, but that entirely depends on the company present. Otherwise, she is known to be more serious.

This is what she’s been telling herself all this time, despite every human’s correlation of evil with darkness. What is it that makes darkness look evil? Is it all the destruction done in the shadows? Is it because all the wretches that use the absence of adequate light to take advantage of unsuspecting victims? That’s not the work of darkness. It’s the work of man. Why is she seen as evil when she has done nothing as harmful as man?

𝘿𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙡.

Although why is it that it’s hard to shake off the human perception that with darkness comes ill-intention? The notion of malice coming hand in hand with the shadows had been constantly beating on her back, rendering her skin raw and her principles questioned. 

Darkness is part of life. It coexists with the light, as night coexists with day. Erebus to Aether, and Nyx to Hemera. The goddess of night was born in Gaia but resided in Tartarus, a place of torment, darkness, and suffering. But none of these were of her own doing. Her abilities include inducing sleep and death but she’s never done so. The definition of evil is to be profoundly immoral or wicked, and she is neither. Although, Nyx is not exactly good either. You won’t find her inspiring others to be virtuous or encouraging creatures to be just. Perhaps the excerpt from Anthony Doerr’s book is appropriate in this situation: “𝙳𝚘𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚗𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚜 𝚊𝚜 𝚐𝚘𝚘𝚍 𝚊𝚜 𝚌𝚘𝚕𝚕𝚊𝚋𝚘𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐.”.

As the sun sat high in the sky, there sat a lady with a book in her hand of some obscure Russian literature. Today marked her third day in Russia, and the start of her fifth week in Europe. It’s been months since she’s been home. Before Europe she’d been around Asia, getting to know the different food and cultures. Mortals may attribute the sudden need for exploration to having a quarter-life crisis, but Brooke knew that she’d been alive for much longer than that for it to be such a simple ordeal.

Her nimble fingers turned a page before reaching over to retrieve the last piece of 𝘡𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘳. In all her travels, dessert was always her favourite part. Today it was a chocolate coated 𝘻𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘳. Americans may compare it to a fruit meringue that is more like a marshmallow in softness. Nonetheless, every bite sent her taste buds into a frenzy and the quick sugar rush pushed her over the edge. But before she had enough time to enjoy it, it disappeared. As did every other rush of pleasure in her life.

“Спасибо” She thanked the waitress as she stood from her table. Brooke patted down her dark coat and strode along in her thigh highs. 

She thought that when she gave up part of her divinity, she could at least feel the same sensations that any other human would. She couldn’t be more wrong. Ever since she surrendered her powers into the box she’s felt more tied down to the world; less ethereal and more mortal. Since the night of the ceremony, Brooke had lost some of her powers and was only starting to get used to her limited abilities. 

The sky was overcast this particular day with the sun quietly hiding behind a thick set of clouds. Brooke took this opportunity to walk around and explore the streets of St. Petersburg. Her black heels were pounding rhythmically against the cold pavement as she found herself in a less congested area. She was walking by tall buildings when a she saw a glimmer in the corner of her eye. Her curiosity got the best of her and she took a few steps closer, unable to contain the intrigue in her eyes. Before she knew it she was pulled into a narrow opening in the wall and was face to face with a man who looked like he was in his mid 30′s. He was rugged and smelled heavily of smoke and alcohol. She felt a prick on her neck and realized he was holding a sharp cold object to her skin. It stung. 

“Hand over everything you got and you won’t get hurt.” The man had a deep, scratchy voice and he had eyes that were so full of evil she was just frozen in place. He pressed the object harder against her skin and she winced as it penetrated her skin. She felt a trail of warm blood trickle down her skin. At least that was proof that she bled now. She shuffled her hands to hand over her purse but the man grabbed her wrist instead. Is this what the mortals call getting mugged? This is a hell of a welcome to mortality.

“On second thought. Your blood smells amazingly 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. I might need to kill you after all.” His words were laced with so much malice that it sent chills down her spine. She was without her full powers. She didn’t have the strength to push him ten yards away and smash his skull against the wall. She had only started to get used to her mortal body.

The last thing she saw was the man scowling, two sharp teeth extending out from an otherwise perfect set of teeth. Her fascination almost matched the fear welling up in her throat. But before she could even start to process what she was seeing the man’s grip suddenly disappeared and he was out of her sight. She looked to the side and saw that he was pulled away by a mysterious figure of another man. He was less rugged-looking than the one who just held a knife to her neck, but just rough and aggressive nonetheless, if not more. The strangest feature that caught her eye, though, was the large sharp claws extending out from the ends of his fingers. 

“How lucky am I to witness two supernatural beings in the span of three minutes.” She muttered dryly to herself, her heart still trying to jump out of her chest from the adrenaline.

The mugger was face-down on the pavement, struggling to break free from the grasp of Brooke’s night in shining armour. Her saviour was crouching by the man’s waist when he looked up and locked eyes with her. For a moment she was frozen in place once more, unable to look away. It was as if she was under a trance. The scenes following this turned out to be the messiest and goriest slaughter she had experienced on earth.

With a devilish grin plastered on his face, Brooke’s mystery man lifted his hand just a fraction of an inch before plunging his long claws into the man’s back. A blood-curdling scream emerged from the mugger as the claws dug in all the way through, enough to skewer him. He crouched man stood up and lifted the mugger to a standing position with his claws. They both faced her, as if this mystery man wanted Brooke to watch every act of punishment he was doing to this scum. The bloody body was nearly limp from the amount of pain that was was being given. She saw the two pointy teeth glimmering in the sunlight once more when the mystery man cocked the head to the side, exposing his neck. Without a hint of hesitation, he dug his teeth into the flesh and blood splattered everywhere. Spouts of blood were all over the walls of the alley and a good amount got sprayed on to Brooke’s clothes as well. She couldn’t help but stare in awe. 

She wasn’t horrified, no. If anything, she was 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘥. She hasn’t seen anything of this degree since Tartarus.

She lifted a hand to wipe the blood off her cheek but didn’t take her eyes off the scene for even a second. She was curious what would happen next. Is the show over? 

As a final act, mystery man pulled out his claws from the scum’s back and grasped his head firmly. In one swift movement she heard a 𝙨𝙣𝙖𝙥. Mystery man pulled so hard that the mugger’s head was dismembered, and blood was steadily flowing into a thick pool at their feet. Brooke felt pathetic just staring but she couldn’t bring herself to do anything else. Mystery man shoved the body to the side and started stepping closer to her. His eyes showed almost the same malice as the mugger previously had and fear started welling up in her chest again. 

“Hand them over, sweetheart.” His husky voice snapped her out of her trance. 

𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥.

He grabbed her purse without breaking eye contact and soon enough his face was just inches from hers. His musky scent was intoxicating and her brain was bewildered. She was suddenly self-conscious, hugging her arms to her body as her heart threatened to leap out of her chest. He conspicuously sniffed at her shamelessly. “You smell... 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞.” She felt his eyes slowly travel down her body as if he was undressing her with his eyes and she just simply gulped. His eyes locked on to the trickle of blood from the wound the mugger had previously inflicted and thrust his face down to her neck without permission. Brooke felt a warm tongue lick at the blood on the skin of her neck and she gasped in surprise. Did he just lick her?

“What’s your name?” His eyes were locked with hers once more, his tongue licking his lips menacingly, and she could only meekly reply. “B-Brooke. I’m Brooke Alstreim.”

“Well hello there, Brooke. This has become quite an interesting day.” The devilish smile was back. She didn’t know what to think anymore, and frankly she didn’t want to.

The image of her flat was disastrous. All the flowers on display were wilted and a cloud of dark smoke filled the entire area. For the past few days Brooke had been scouring the city for any indication for anybody she could approach to aid her in overcoming this ordeal. The bin by her desk was overflowing with partly decomposed bandages and wraps that she used in an effort to conceal her wound. For the most part, it would work. At least for the first couple of hours the synthetic bandages could hold up their own. However it wasn’t long until her dark smoke bled through. 

Luckily, as she was walking around the streets of London she found a dazzling  shop named ‘𝙈𝙤𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙣𝙚’. The 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘢𝘦, the three goddesses of fate, had a strange sense of humour. The moonstone was often used to honour Nyx by those who were familiar with it. It is said to be a recommended stone for young women and lost souls because it aligns them with the universe and helps them find their rightful place. The establishment was embellished with elegant pieces that anyone would be drawn to. Each one exuded its own extravagant presence, as though they held their own little secrets. “This must be the rightful place to be, then.” She was running out of time, and quite frankly the energy to control her divinity as well, and it seemed that this coincidence might be the answer to her problems. Brooke walked into the shop, her finger tightly bandaged and covered with a leather glove. The place was sparkling with fine jewelries and stones. It was almost dazzling enough to distract her if not for the strange pull she had from the back room. Surely this wasn’t just a coincidence that she felt a supernatural force beckoning her to come closer. 

“Hello? Can I speak to the owner?” Her voice was firm but cautious. Not ten seconds later, a dark haired femme stepped out with a scrutinizing eye. She knew. Excitement and adrenaline filled Brooke’s veins, urging her to step closer. Yet the woman’s presence was so strong that she knew better than to assert herself without proper negotiations.

“My name is Brooke, and I am in need of your assistance.” 

𝙰𝚝𝚕𝚊𝚜 𝙼𝚘𝚞𝚗𝚝𝚊𝚒𝚗𝚜, 𝙼𝚘𝚛𝚘𝚌𝚌𝚘

𝙳𝚎𝚌𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚛 𝟼, 𝟸𝟶𝟷𝟾 𝟻:𝟺𝟽 𝚙𝚖 (𝙶𝙼𝚃)

Of course, witches do not grant favours. In exchange for the service requested, Brooke needed to pull some strings and use her powers to be able to attain a golden apple of the Hesperides. Earlier in the day she approached a witch to request for her assistance in containing a part of her divinity, preferably in an enchanted box that was never to be opened by anyone other than herself. This was not an easy thing to do, even for a grand dark witch. For such an elaborate service, her request was not at all simple either. She had to retrieve something that perhaps only she could pull off without causing another war. The last being who stole a golden apple from Hera’s orchard caused a series of events that led to the great Trojan war. This was a great opportunity to make use of her powers before she gave them up. It was quite a bittersweet feeling. 

Back in London laid the body of Brooke Alstreim in her darkened London flat. Her eyes were closed and one might have thought she was asleep, but she was far from it. Her consciousness was nearly 2,000 miles south of London.

“𝘔𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯...,” from a dark cloud of smoke in the figure of Nyx, a whisper echoed. She was standing near one of the peaks of the Atlas mountains, just a few yards away from the tree in the middle of Hera’s orchard. “Mother!,” Erytheia, one of the Hesperides, cried out. “𝘐 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭. 𝘐 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘥𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦.”  A thick cloud resembling an arm reached out to the direction of the tree of the golden apples, much to the Hesperides’ despair. 

“We are afraid we can’t do such a thing. Ladon has been closely guarding the tree ever since the last incident with Heracles. Standing even three feet away has been proven to be nearly impossible.”

The hundred-headed serpent that was tasked with guarding the golden apples has been slain once, by Heracles himself, but Nyx didn’t have the intention of slaying him again. She was the goddess of night. Even Zeus cowered at crossing her. Her den had become a hiding place for her children when they were up to no good. “𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘰.” Due to her abilities, Nyx was at the serpent’s side in a fraction of a second. His scales glimmered in the moonlight. She shot out dense clouds of darkness that surrounded the serpent and all his heads, trapping Ladon in an orb of pitch-black smoke. Now that the guardian was immobilized, the Hesperides gathered around the tree and did as was told with no hesitation.

𝙼𝚘𝚘𝚗𝚜𝚝𝚘𝚗𝚎 𝙻𝚘𝚗𝚍𝚘𝚗, 𝚄𝚗𝚒𝚝𝚎𝚍 𝙺𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚍𝚘𝚖 𝙳𝚎𝚌𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚛 𝟽, 𝟸𝟶𝟷𝟾 𝟷:𝟹𝟼 𝚊𝚖 (𝙶𝙼𝚃)

“As you requested...”, whispered Brooke as she held a golden apple of Hera in her gloved hands. The apple gleamed in the candlelight of the back room. Earlier, the witch named her price and requested that Brooke came back at the witching hour for the ceremony. The golden apple was said to bring eternal youth to whoever consumes it, much like the god’s ambrosia. It has been sought out by various creatures through the centuries but the number of those who have succeeded could only be counted on two fingers. “I hope this serves you well.” She held the apple out to the witch, excitement and trepidation surging through her blood for what’s to come. She had no idea how the night will progress. One could only hope that it would go as hoped since she had already fulfilled her end of the bargain.

In the darkness of the night, the woman standing before her exuded an aura that informed Brooke that she was someone one wouldn’t dare mess around with. In the daylight she had dazzling light blue eyes. Her blue crystalline orbs almost reminded her of the brilliance of the beautiful stones embellished all around her shop. However, whether due to the late hour or due to the minimal light provided by the candles, her eyes then appeared darker and brooding. A small voice whispered that this was going to be unlike anything she’s ever witnessed in her entire existence.

It’s been months since Brooke Alstreim has been home. She and her family have been around for millenia, yet she hasn't felt the least bit attached to the mortal world. It wasn’t until she started mingling with humans that she felt a sense of mortality and all emotions that came with it. She wished to contribute something to the world, to do something for humanity. With her sister Nean, she previously established an island resort called Isla Astralis a few months ago. They envisioned bringing their idea of paradise to the world. She wanted to share this paradise with all kinds of people, humans and supernaturals alike. This was done in an effort to scratch an ever present itch that lingered deep in her soul since the beginning of time.

In all fairness it did, but not for long. Her soul craved for something much bigger in the grand scheme of the universe.

𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢-  goddess of nighttime

She looked up to see a statue of what seemed to be the Hindu’s perception of the goddess of night, heavily decorated with jewellery. Atop the statue’s head sat a crown and a golden halo. There are many depictions of the goddess of night. There is the Greek 𝐍𝐲𝐱, the Roman 𝐍𝐨𝐱, the Egyptian 𝐊𝐮𝐤, the Iranic 𝐀𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧, the Maori 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐞-𝐧𝐮𝐢-𝐭𝐞-𝐩ō, and the Norse 𝐍ó𝐭𝐭. There are many names, many faces, but there is only one divine being of the night. She is roaming the earth in a mortal body, lurking in the shadows.

For the longest time she had been suppressing her divinity and had been trying to find different paths away from darkness. That may be the exact reason why she had felt incomplete. The other Alstreims have embraced their inviolability to the fullest, why can’t she? She can’t keep denying an essential part of herself much longer. It was a long and winding road that would lead to darkness regardless of how she went on about it. 

This is the purpose of her recent adventures. It was to remind herself of who and what she was and will always be, and reestablish what she is capable of. She has traveled across Asia and explored different cultures and religions, seeking out the view from every angle of the goddess of night. One may see this as the truest sense of narcissism, but Brooke would like to call it a 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜.

𝙻𝚘𝚗𝚍𝚘𝚗, 𝚄𝚗𝚒𝚝𝚎𝚍 𝙺𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚍𝚘𝚖

𝙽𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚛 𝟸𝟿, 𝟸𝟶𝟷𝟾

It has been roughly a month since Brooke embraced her full divinity, and every cell in her mortal body had been reawakened to the fullest. Her powers have fully returned and she had absolute control and divine authority over shadows and darkness. This was the strength she brought from the heart of Tartarus. She was enjoying her divinity as she hasn’t felt this powerful in a very long time. Though, of course she still enjoyed the things she used to before she was reawakened.

The sun was high and shining in the city of London. Brooke decided to go on a stroll and she found herself entering a quaint flower shop that just received a new delivery of fresh roses. 

“𝒜 𝓇𝑜𝓈𝑒 𝒷𝓎 𝒶𝓃𝓎 𝑜𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇 𝓃𝒶𝓂𝑒 𝓌𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹 𝓈𝓂𝑒𝓁𝓁 𝒶𝓈 𝓈𝓌𝑒𝑒𝓉.“

She mused to herself as she picked one out, remembering when Shakespeare would spend endless nights cooped up in his dark room with just a candle to light his upcoming masterpiece. She held the soft petals to her nose and closed her eyes to appreciate the sweet innocence produced by the beautiful bloom. It was then when she felt a sudden prick on her finger. She opened her eyes to see a thin cloud of dark smoke rising and almost gasped when she realized it was coming from her own finger.

Almost instantly, the flower began to wilt and die. A veil of despair and confusion shrouded her and she immediately clenched her hand tightly. What was happening? What is this?

Once she was safely away from a crowd, she unclenched her fist. Nail marks were etched into her palm but that wasn’t what caught her attention. She sustained a small cut on the tip of her finger, and instead of red blood that was bound to clot she saw dark smoke escaping her fingertip. “Oh dear,” she whispered helplessly. Instead of healing itself, the cut was gradually worsening. It seemed as though her mortal vessel could not contain her divinity. If she kept insisting on becoming mortal and having her powers simultaneously, she might combust and wreak havoc on the very world she wished to contribute positivity to.

“This won’t do,” she muttered to herself as she made her way back to the flat. She had to figure out what to do about her dilemma before it got out of hand. Surely, of all the species that walked the earth there should be at least one being that she could make a deal with to assist her. It was all in a matter of making sure she dealt with her powers first before 𝐢𝐭 dealt with 𝐡𝐞𝐫.
