Most ferret groups and books I have access to have lots of suggestions for problematic behaviour, and many work to minimize damage or discourage it. But most are bandaids. They’re useful during training but don’t actually address the root of the problem and modify the ferret’s habits; they’re environment management rather than actual training. So, as soon as the opportunity arises, the behaviour raises its head again because the ferret never actually learned to do anything else.

Potty Training

Management: potty pads or boxes in every corner, clean litter box more frequently, change out carpet for linoleum, use enzyme-based cleaner, place beds or food in inappropriate potty places. These solutions create an environment where accidents are less likely, but don’t actually teach the ferret where to relieve himself.

Training: Wait until the ferret uses the box and then immediately reward by releasing him from the cage (or treat if unable to release). Watch ferret closely, so when he starts waddling or backing up, you can plop him in the box or potty pad. Make sure he actually relieved himself and did not fake it. Do not allow him to have accidents, as the act of going to the bathroom is reinforcing.

Digging

Management: carpet runners in front of doors, plywood bottoms for mattresses and furniture, cheap area rugs, guards for doors/walls

Training: Digging is a natural ferret behaviour, but may also stem from boredom. If the ferret is pacing or speedbumping, call her and engage her in play or with a food puzzle. Whenever she tries to dig at an inappropriate item, remove her and place her in an appropriate dig box.

Chewing

Management: bitter sprays, limiting access to the objects getting chewed

Training: Supply appropriate chew toys of a similar material and redirect chewing to those. Lure, call, or “bowl” the ferret away every time he tries to chew inappropriately. This may turn into a game for a while, but will help him realize that chewing that is simply not an option.

Cage Escapes and Bar-Chewing

Management: zipties and cage locks to prevent escapes, bitter sprays and smaller bar spacing to prevent bar-chewing

Training: Encourage the ferret when she is caged to engage in productive behaviour instead. Every time you cage her, add a high value treat or toy to the cage, preferably in a tunnel or treat puzzle. Place her at the bottom of the cage or entrance to a tunnel, and place the reward at the top of the cage or end of the tunnel before leaving. This will both deal with the core issue, boredom, as well as the behaviour.

Grooming

Management: scruffing for grooming, distracting with a treat
