this is such a good question. gay marriage took legal effect in 2014 in illinois and then nationally in 2015…… i think it’s probably something that they both thought about but didn’t vocalize for a while? they’re both so career driven and never necessarily slow that down for personal milestones. also in my hc benton has never been married and obviously john’s was rough so it’s not top of mind for them at all

so maybe it’s a gradual sort of thing. MAYBE john has a little bit of a health scare with his kidney and he thinks he is due for another transplant and they realize that they’re ready and how fleeting things are and they have a quiet little event with friends and reese is benton’s best man and john is like…. i don’t know who my best man should be, i always pictured it being you peter LOL
