finley who leans into the “witchy woman” aesthetic and expands her magic to include more focus words, casting countless protections around her apartment and the places of her friends. the first spells she learned are still ‘block’ and ‘report’ but she’s grown into her magic enough to take more buzzwords and turn them into spells, too — ‘gaslight’ for memory loss, ‘filter’ for illusions, etc etc. she has crystals practically lining her whole body — some of them focus objects, some not, some just for decoration, her clothes always smelling like lavender and patchouli
landry growing up in a magical family but never really studying magic until after he moves out. dressing in slightly wrinkled collared shirts and cargo pants for his day job as an electrician and donning a heavy fur coat to meet with other witches. having a geode egg on a ring or a necklace as his focus, tall and broad with barely-there sparks and magic practically dripping off of him. he has enough charge to power half the magical world and he uses it in every way possible — just because he didn’t study magic doesn’t mean he never grew up with that kind of power constantly around him. green crystals and gold woven into his hair.
hayes being soft-spoken but having every word laced with power — he threw himself into studying magic as soon as he learned about it, round glasses, never without a cup of coffee. he’ll study in the cafe, always learning new ways to cast, jotting down turns of phrase to morph into new spells. he’s the only one of the group without a physical focus, keeping everything in his head instead. pullover sweaters and quick-scribbled notes on his arms, never having to repeat himself because of the energy that he’s honed his words to hold
mason, making her way through culinary school, oil-streaked arms with the sleeves always rolled up. bubbling sugar, heat on high, and the smell of smoke always lingering around her. not knowing that it’s magic, per se, but knowing that she’s never too hot or too cold, that everything she makes is always cooked just right. rose gold earrings and a lip ring, too, licking sweet frosting from her fingers.
reese working as a designer overseas, discovering magic in a tiny shop on a vacation back home. finding magical society before he finds his own gift. imitating others despite nothing coming of it until he’s absently sketching out a design and finds that he has the exact materials he needs for it in his fabric storage. his magic slowly progressing from sketches to actual designs, weaving enchantments into clothing, and suddenly he can’t remember a time when he wasn’t wearing magic
graves who still owns the cafe but now with his fiancé, nacht. they learn magic together, building instead of leeching off of each other, and it turns out nacht has just as much of a penchant for strays as graves does. nacht discovers he can make decent coffee. graves discovers how to make a queen-sized bed fit two people and a cat. they advertise the cafe as a safe place for both mundane people in need and magic users in need of refuge. life is good.
avery who stumbles into a meeting of witches at a local convention center and plays along. they find their knack for magic through a mixture of studying and real-world application, and when something more powerful first tries to hunt them down, they go to the cafe for safety.
and thus the story begins.
