I cant sleep. I am frustrated. Maybe I will analyze song lyrics. Here is one of my favorite Dir en grey songs and my favorite live Ive seen of it- The Blossoming Beelzebub.
Lyric themes- emotional neglect, insecurity/self-defeat.
The openning alone of repeating "listen, listen" which isn't part of the studio recording.
This song opens its verses after something has happened. "Burned words its still stuck in my ear like everything else is" possibly an argument that included insults or making the singers self worth feel like its in the trash. In the studio recording this is sung in a falsetto, the live Kyo had some issues with his vocal cords or throat and couldnt hit falsettos but gave this creepy mocking type of sound instead. Im wondering if this is meant to be impersonating woman that said the words or maybe he was called feminine and playing it up as a response. Because the next line "I've made up my mind" is out of falsetto and more spoken in a neutral voice.
"I cant see the full moon today, the invisible clouds killed it" mental fog, the full moon is super bright but you are so depressed you cant see past the mental fog.
There's silverware, food, even something id consider even fancy like a napkin tied at the neck, but the food is cold. Probably a long argument or the provider makes the food way before the singer is home to eat and they are like ships passing in the night.
Hear sounds of own heartbeat and neighbors- some sort of living situation, this person isnt homeless. Home is empty of life though enough to hear your own heartbeat and neighbor either through walls or a home over if it isnt an apartment.
Lying down and becoming one with the dirt- acceptance/surrender to the depression. Just want to sleep. The view is new to the singer so this acceptance of death is growing stronger, then mental battle still asking when wings will grow immediately like theres a little voice saying to hold on but you cant find your wings to push out and grow out of the depression.
Here kyo fishhooks in the Age Quod Agis tour , showing this is very emotional and frustrating, like wanting to claw out of your own flesh.
As the song goes and repeats verses the way they are sung changes, why? Why? It cycles faster between sadness, anger and apathy within the one section.
"With your multiplying selves" I cant figure this line out.
Finally you find silverware under the sofa, able to eat a different part of the meal. Saying "supposed to be tasty" theres no appetite or joy in the food. This is like a mental switch has flipped to accept things and just continue routine. The song eases into a softer sound and the singing is no longer jumping between emotions.
This song comes right after Kyokotsu no Nari on Dum Spiro Spero, an instrumental track thats shrill, sorrowful and has alot of tension. Quick read on Kyokotsu showed they are vengeful yokai resulting from improperly disposed bodies that will get revenge from whoever disturbs them. Was someone disturbed or thrown off their routine from the singer and cause this spiral? Was the singer trying to connect emotionally to the Kyokotsu and thats where we open the song with Burned words cling to my ears?
I cant say im super familiar of Beelzebub other than being lord of the flies and one of the princes of hell. But Wikipedia article says he represents envy and gluttony. Is the singer becoming envious of people with their wings? The song is played like a decent into hell and the singer starts accepting his fate as the song progresses, is he accepting his position in hell as the Blossoming beelzebub?
I love this song. Let me be a geek over this.
Sharing portraits I was working on last month of Dir en grey. Used yridenergyridenergy scans from PHY. vol 29 of Nakano Hirohisa's photos.
