I have returned to the ocean over and over again as the subject of my photography. It is a powerful place full of the unknown; a place where one could be transfixed for hours at a time, taking in the ebb and flow of the great body of water. Beyond the place where the land and salty water meet, there is a mystery that should be both feared and regarded with awe. It is a great source of life and its power and strength can bring tragedy and harm- sometimes violently and sometimes not. This exchange can form the rocks into treacherous spaces or create soft, sandy areas of refuge in others. It is this space that I am taken. A place on the edge of the unknown. A place that at times can be safe. A place that is ever changing and evolving.Â

For Jon and Amy on the Occasion of their Wedding -- Clurie Anderson
Goodbye Father The line is heavy with catch And the horses stamp in the stable But more than these Stands at the end of the road Flanked by the blooming poplars She whispers tears like secret Things for me to drink From her eyes I am drunk on her eyes and scarcely Can I remember A sobriety so sweet Goodbye Mother The garden pants in the sun And the loom lies still But more than these Comes up from the brick-lain house Square shouldered to forge new hours He sings a song like a fire Smoldering not to death But to bellows I hear his song and I melt Into him so our Bodies are no more
He Outdrew Me (Ode to Jeff Buckley) -- Jeff Stillion
A memory, an apparition, fake,
a shotgun shack in which Jeff Buckley
is scribbling shorthand another Tim
or New York melody.
He is a lamp, shadeless,
worse remembered,
a sink’s knob untended
that floods the sound,
flailing waves of Led Zeppelin and Nina Simone.
The future is everything,Â
but I still forget
the slow, patient dog
of his affection.Â
Left his heart out of his grasp
and knelt from the throne of vitality
where the stained-glass man points
high above the Wolf River, black.
But remember Buckley.
And remember his younger father,
a tenor depraved released in a pill
and a black turtle neck.
Remember Jeff
with those Cafe Sin-e’ claps
under fifteen lively covers.
That is more to crumble me into the future,
fill its churches,Â
and sprint together towards the pulpits
singing John Cale’s rendition of Hallelujah.
Remember the past,
remember the tear-filled numbers in the pews,
the normality of their informal attire
in light of gradual life,
remember their individual calls,
the prayers and hands joined under the body,
the slam of the rising pulleyed gate.

I haven’t prayed in 18 months -- Clurie Anderson
I thought I heard you say something the other day
But it’s been so long, I can’t be sure
And every time I try to start again
The same sentence sounds over and over
Or it comes out stale as a press release
You’re a neighbor now
I hear you upstairs walking across your living room
I see you get into your car
I used to know your name once
And maybe you still know mine
But I don’t want to prove it
I thought this would go on for a little while
But it’s been so long, I don’t know how
It’s been so long that the guilt is fading
It’s been so long that it’s starting not to scare me anymore
And that scares me
