At first Charles is annoyed with the asshole who's first paper is so incredibly scientifically inaccurate that he's cringing and writing book-length notes packed with resources and information out of pure frustration. At first Erik is annoyed at the mile-long responses filled with snarky comments about a topic he's learning just for the credits. But then there's equally witty backtalk. And passive aggressive emails. And a lot of studying. And horrible pick-up lines. And suddenly it's becoming endearing.

He could have been home with his drunk mother. He could have been scanning the beach for his sister. Instead, he is walking through the cargo hold of the Hellfire with the ward of her captain. “You know, I never got to thank you,” Charles murmurs. “For saving my life, I mean.” He swears he almost sees Erik smile.
