The winds shift and carries the scent of deer with it. He lifts his head to the lake shore, where a stag appears from the fog. 

It is not a hunting night, but it is alone, and we will need food soon. He lifts his hand and points down to the shore. They move swiftly across the sloped hills of the forest, silent as the shadows, masked under the brush. With a hand raised once more, his brothers drop low into the underbrush, covering their faces and bodies with darkness. 

He peers from behind the treeline, as the creature steps into the pool, sinking its body under the water. The water swallows the stag until only the antlers remain. 

When the antlers rise once more, it is a man’s form that takes its place. 

He does not give the command to attack.

Ready? She could feel her heart banging in her chest and her palms were too clammy to connect with his comfortably. If Ayame was nervous when she met Yoshino for the first time, then meeting the elders had her near petrified. Ready definitely wasn’t the word she would opt for in this situation.

Looking between both Naras, she knew she had every right to be worried. She had only ever seen Yoshino stern and stubborn, and she was use to the brave faces Shikamaru opted to wear for self-preservation, but his flinching made her that much more cautious .

The brunette shuffled to squeeze Shikamaru’s pinky finger, holding his hand or linking arms wouldn’t look good on their entrance, so she settled for the small little bit of affection she could share, “I’ll be on my best behaviour,” if she was trying to be funny she was failing, her voice was wobbling so much it betrayed her, “I’m as ready as any civilian could ever be, I’ll just think of them as uncooked noodles if I get scared… plus you’re both here. It’ll be fine.”

Ayame couldn’t help but keep her head high as she followed Yoshino’s lead; she wasn’t confident but everything was too dazzling to look away, even if the air felt heavy and cold in heart. She was mesmerised that a celebration could feel clinical, but she held a small and sure smile on her features. If she had to be the designated  ray of sunshine then she would do it for her love and future.

Only some event goers noticed the couple’s presence. Among them, a mix of genuine smiles and ones that are force. Their eyes analyzing the woman by Shikamaru’s side. Drawn by her plump belly. Unlike Ino and Chouji, he never informed them that he’s expecting a child. He never even told them of Ayame. Out of fear his superiors would force him out of his relationship with her.

Now judgement day is here and the pair has no choice but to face it. Are they ready? Definitely not. He can only hope his natural instincts to handle such situations will kick in sooner than later.
