Hello Christine. Really enjoyed reading about your WDI experience as I just got accepted to the same program at GA. Could you share your experience finding the job after the graduation please? How soon did you get a job and if GA helped you to find the job? Thank you!

Congratulations on your acceptance! I’m glad you enjoyed reading about my experience.

I participated in GA’s Apprenticeship Program about a month after I graduated from the WDI course. The company for which I apprenticed offered me a full-time job, but I decided to look for other jobs by attending one of GA’s job fairs where I met the CTO of the company for which I currently work. Within a couple of weeks I received a job offer from them and I began working for them soon after my apprenticeship ended.

Hi Christine! I just found your blog today, and from I've read so far it's already super informative. I'm in the process of applying to GA and I'll be spending the next few days reading your blog haha. One question: It seems that using a Mac is industry standard, though I noted you mentioned some students in your WDI cohort used Windows laptops. I was wondering if there was any huge difference? I have a Windows laptop and am wondering if investing in a Macbook will be necessary :(

I’m glad you find my blog helpful, but do keep in mind that my experience with WDI was back in 2013. GA probably made adjustments to the class format and curriculum since then.

Since I don’t have any personal experience myself in developing on a Windows computer, I put your question forward to my fellow WDI alum who did go through the program using Windows. The instructors were unable to help her whenever she had problems troubleshooting software and that happened quite frequently. Also, many class exercises and assignments required certain libraries that were not supported on Windows and she found herself having to modify and/or skip the work. She bought a Macbook immediately after the course ended. In my opinion, investing in a Macbook will save you a lot of frustration.

On Fixing a Bug I Didn’t Know I Caused

I identified a bug in our codebase and while fixing it I asked myself, “Wow, who wrote this code?!” The code made very little sense.

So, out of curiosity, I went sifting through the file’s history of changes on GitHub. To my dismay, I discovered I was the one who wrote the original nonsensical code that caused the bug...a year ago.

On Crashing a Site in Production

In development, we use Ruby 2.x, and i recently wrote some new scope methods that involve lambdas. My scope methods worked beautifully in development and the corresponding unit tests passed...

but they crashed our site when they were merged into the master branch and deployed!

Luckily, the source of the problem was quickly found out--we use Ruby 1.9.x in production and the syntax I used for the scope methods was incompatible with that Ruby version. This was easy to fix!
