Hozier- It Will Come Back

     It’s the smile that draws her first. The kindness of an ignorant stranger on the street.

     Normally, she is thankful but ultimately apathetic to these simple, daily exchanges. This time, it’s different. Entirely so.

                 She swore she saw a raven.

         Rather, a woman who looked like her raven. With dark hair and flat teeth, but she’s convinced all the time. Lilly’s been following her ever since she’s spotted the girl, ensuring that any nightly rituals or daily chores are done so safely. She’s just a little too shy to approach normally, hesitant to return to the eclipsing presence of the beast she’s mistaken the stranger to be.

     She’s given the girl dead birds to eat, left behind on window sills. Keeps the larger animals to the doorstep, where they are sure to be found. Presents. Gifts of affections.

      Black hair. Pretty smile. Skin— that part makes her shake. Warm skin that pulses underneath. Different, somehow. In the way she dresses and carries herself, but still her raven, right?

     Within a month’s time, her obsession climbs a nigh inescapable height. Ends up successfully tricking and trapping her prey in an alleyway. She’s caught her bird, but now what is there to do? What is she supposed to do when Lilly begins to notice all the differences between her love and the girl she’s been stalking?

     Must look mad, pacing back and forth with her nails snagged between sharp teeth and fingers combing the rat’s nest that makes up her hair. “Oh, no—”

      The wolf must remain steadfast. A resilient leader that shows no weakness before the eye of her underlings---

     And yet, her muscles are tense, hands clutching to the grass firmly rooted below. Her body is twisted, face turned away from the injured leg. Perfect picture of silent suffering.

     It is the youngest of the sisters that finds her first, after having been missing from their for a day and a half. Off to hunt for the pack and provide as her role demands it. Cannot remember exactly when the dirt gave away from beneath her foot, forcing her to crash and tumble down steep mountainside. A mistake that could’ve killed her, had not much of the strain been focused on the awkward position her leg had been in during the fall. Flesh is torn in other places, bruises to the torso, but the most notable injury had to be that accursed leg.

     Can she move it? She tries, and it rips an anguished cry from her lips that is quickly muffled by biting the tongue. A clenched fist raises, beats at the dirt.

   Should have taken just enough, just enough to tide them for a while, but she’d been greedy. There was so much. Managed to tear off a hunk (but she could take a little more) and strips kept pulling away so easily. The creature was soft and plump, mouth-watering. Her stomach had growled, irritable at the wait, but she would not eat until little sister had eaten, not until little sister had her fill. There was just so much.

   She’d been careless.

   The hunter returns in a silent fury and she is surprised, afraid, hurts as tough nails make themselves intimate with her skin. But above all, constantly burning in her, she is angry, at herself, at the world, at the hunter who will feast after tossing aside her body that will become food, hardly worth the effort with scrawny limbs and tight ribs. Infuriating. No, she will not let it be effortless. Can’t leave little sister alone.

   She, too, has claws, and they rake at the hunter, teeth snapping over a scream that rips from her throat, furious, hateful, painful. It strangles as her throat constricts, pressure from the hunter’s strength, but she digs her heels into the ground and bucks against the weight. Can’t leave little sister alone, cannot, will not.

   Because little sister won’t leave her, either, even if she becomes food.

   A glimpse of motion. Shadow breaks from shadows into the clearing, smaller even than the hunter’s prey, making no sound but speaking the universal language of beasts: Head down, belly down, vulnerable and pliant. A wordless plea for mercy. Fear wells up, explodes, eclipses her rage. Angry snarls rise into a wail, eyes burning. Little sister is in danger, in danger, in danger— 

   She ceases her struggling, clings, now, to death’s limbs, won’t let the hunter get away. Won’t let little sister get hurt.

          She is a creature of red and rage. Inexplicably angry. How dare some weaker animal try to take what was her’s. How dare they! Believes that if one is too weak to hunt for themselves, then they are not worthy of living at all. Cold, ice-blue eyes stare down pointedly at the thing in her hands. It is too big. Should’ve died a long time ago for a weakling. Her fingers only happy to bruise the warm flesh beneath them.

          Then, a rustling. Quiet padding feet, much like the one’s before but, clumsier than any mammal. Footsteps like her own, and the one she’s killing. The hunter’s body tenses. Mind sharp, quickly realizing the scene that’s played out before her.

          Tiny whelp would be an understatement. The twin-like animal in the distance, crossing the clearing, is downright pathetic. Her mind rakes through meanings, of relations. Is this the offenders child? No. Too small for mothering. A hairless, immature thing.

     But it knows to grovel. And this pleases her enough to lax her grip on the other one’s neck.

          The eldest of the trio’s jaw works from left to right, thinking. Wondering. This is the first she’s seen of animals that look like her, and they are hungry, this much she gathers. Remembers being at the mercy of wolves once before. Finally, she lets up, removes her hands from the bigger one’s throat, and then stands. Instead of finishing her kill, she steps aside, away from the duo. Slowly circles about the both of them, once they are close enough to herd. Eyes nitpicking the tiny girl that’s graced their presence.

          In a fit, her arms cross themselves over her stomach. Right hand scratching at the left’s forearm. Face an amalgamation of frustration and reluctance. Reasons both can’t eat too much, being as little as they are.
