The Iroh Comic was Kinda Bad…
The most baffling part about the Iroh comic “The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer” IMO isn’t the way it seems to dismiss anyone hurt by Iroh in the part as either villains who need to get over it or crazy people protesting something no one else is upset about.
Those aren’t great at all but at least I can comprehend the writers wanting to glaze Iroh and excuse his checkered past, cowardly as that is. If only for pure fan service reasons!
No, the most confusing element is the implication that the bounty hunters who retired and became happy alpaca farmers are morally superior to the bounty hunters who are *checks notes* still bounty hunting?
But how is someone who has been nomadic their entire career supposed to suddenly come into possession of a plot of arable land for farming and ranching? Let alone all the resources to start up and maintain it?
The bizarre implication seems to be that the difference between the “good, redeemed” bounty hunters and the “greedy, traitorous” bounty hunters isn’t ethics. It’s land ownership.
Weird values for a show against colonization and imperialism.
I will never be over that Tolkien wrote Maeglin the way he did. A victim of abuse, isolated from others since childhood, watched his father try to kill him in front of everyone, watched his mother take the blow and die in his stead, and then stuck living with a stranger who happens to be his uncle, in a city his father always told him was emblematic of the Noldor’s hubris that had led to their suffering.
Imprisoned in Gondolin like he was in the forests of Eöl. Alienated and isolated now by the nature of who he is and how different he is on sight. Pining unrequitedly for his cousin, a taboo he knows he shouldn’t cross and yet desperate for someone to call his own.
And even after ALL THAT, the moment Maeglin tried to force himself on Idril, Tolkein wrote him getting thrown out a window.
And that is just… legendary.
Tolkien really said “I don’t care what your sob story is. Incels get yeeted!”
Lessons to live by.
You’re complaining to complain. People change over the course of their life, especially if that life spans thousands of years, and it’s not misogynistic to portray a character’s progression into a wise figure.
And people kiss sometimes. Sorry you think that somehow kissing someone turns a woman into a whore or whatever, but your point of view is more misogynistic than anything portrayed in the show.
I’m sorry you’ve been convinced that this corporate slop is deserving of your fealty, to the point you’d ignore egregious sexism to defend it. To the point you’d send me sexist tropes that no one spoke but you and try to attribute them to me.
There are better masters to serve than the alter of Amazon and the commodification of social movements, distilled and sold back to you, proclaiming itself to be forward thinking and progressive, all while it tears down every bit of human value and decency from the source material.
But if this is the one you must choose, then remember the lesson of Celebrimbor and Annatar and take care.
The real one, I mean.
ROP just made everyone stupid, so we don’t really get to see the depths of Sauron’s manipulation.
I wonder why…

People really reblogging posts saying how the rings of power costumes are bad...bruh. Tell me you never watched the show without telling you never watched the show.
I see in the tags you assume everyone with ROP criticism is a HOTD fan.
I assure you, I am not.
I just know terrible costuming when I see it.
Or do you think that printed shirt they’re trying to pass as armor on her sleeve is “quality”? Especially for a show of this budget.
Look at it. This is a prominent character, not a background extra. It’s inexcusable.
And let me be clear: I put NONE of the blame on the actual costumers and designers. It’s clear someone really cares and it’s probably the creative crew members painstakingly doing their best.
In my experience, this is a sign of crunch and horrible work conditions for the crew and craftsmen. Studios no longer give the necessary pre-production time and have staff on perpetual crunch. This is a sign of hard working and passionate creatives being given impossible time-tables.
It’s the same reason HOTTD looks so terrible compared to GOT.
It’s the same reason the new Percy Jackson and Avatar The Last Airbender shows have so many problems. Studio crunch and mandates.
Can we stop making excuses for this?
Even if you love this show (god knows why) we should still be critical of how modern streaming services are treating the people who work on their projects.
Cool. You're an asshole to put your hate in the tag. It's a TV show. Get a fucking life. Oh and you're wrong btw. ROP haters are the most misinformed hateful cretins I've ever had the displeasure of seeing even hardcore Tolkien fans hate ya. Keep being an asshole though I'm sure spending your life hating is a really healthy thing to do. I'm thriving darling rop is a great community full of amazing people and the cast are infinitely better people than even your little finger will be. Hateful cunt.
You say that being hateful is unhealthy and nobody wants to see it, only for you to end said post with a slur and tell them to go fuck themselves?
I would’ve much rather posted this as a response and not a reblog, but you have disabled all responses on all your posts.
The Gaang’s Favorite Foods
Aang is an ovo-lacto vegetarian. He still consumes milk and eggs, just nothing that requires killing an animal. Being more used to getting nutrients from a variety of plant foods including nuts and seeds, supported by nutrient rich bison milk and whatever eggs they eat in this world, Aang’s diet is surprisingly diverse and not as restrictive as it first seems. People have and still do eat this way. He loves egg tarts!
Sokka is a growing teen boy, used to a high-fat diet of primarily fish, mollusks, large ruminants, marine mammals (and their blubber), full fat milk, eggs, blood, etc, and only minorly supported by additional foods like seaweed, berries, tubers, perhaps the occasional imported flour or rice. He is going to need a LOT of animal meat and fat. Especially organs. The cookbook says he loves dried salmon collars.
Katara is also a growing teen girl, and considering what starts for girls around her age, she probably also has higher iron requirements. Heme-iron (from meat) is the most easily absorbed, and if it’s what her body is accustomed to, I imagine there’s going to be a lot of cravings there too. It’s possible she slowly converted to a vegetarian diet eventually, but there isn’t actually anything in canon to say that Katara and Aang didn’t just maintain different diets. The comics and cookbook say she likes soups and stews including sea prunes which are actually a type of mollusk.
Toph comes from a wealthy family. Although most of the Earth Kingdom relies primarily on staple grains (rice mainly, but also others), she likely had a decently diverse diet compared to others. Including plenty of meat (beef, chicken, duck, pork), a variety of vegetables, and even luxury items like refined sugar. According to the cookbook, she doesn’t like to eat her vegetables, which implies she had open access to meat for most of her life. She is fond of tea eggs.
Zuko comes from the wealthiest nation which is also in a tropical climate. He’d have access to a plethora of fruits the others had never even heard of! Tropical fruits, berries, coconut, and all the different dishes you can make with them. The nutrient-rich volcanic soil would also lend itself to farming, giving this country plenty of fresh vegetables and staple grains. However, culturally they seem to be a meat and seafood loving people, and spiciness is critical! Being a prince, Zuko would have even more access to all of the above than the common person. According to the cookbook, his favorite snack is sizzle-crisps which is basically fried and seasoned pork belly. He also sneaks Komodo-chicken to his uncle in prison.
BONUS:
Azula, like Zuko, is royalty in a nation blessed with great diversity of fruits, meat, seafood, and fresh veggies. We know she attended a harsh military academy which puts its students through rigorous survival training. Azula knows how to live off the land and likely can survive off of whatever petty things she can forage or catch. But being royalty, she is more accustomed to having whatever she desires prepared for her. She seems to have a bit of a sweet tooth, which can happen when you give a teen unfettered access to luxury goods like sugar. With her nation’s relatively advanced stage of industrialization, certain more processed foods and desserts are available to her. She is fond of cherries and in the comics she is a fiend for mochi!

Two Beasts
Rings of Power is Insidiously Sexist
And I’m tired of pretending none of us can see it.
If you enjoy the show, please don’t take this as an attack on you. All media has problematic elements and we all do the best we can in a messed up world. My ire is reserved strictly for the people making these “creative” choices.
The way the show treats Galadriel is misogynistic.
Turning the kind, matronly sage imbued with divine wisdom by the light of the two trees into a naive, selfish hothead who gets ship baited with both the villain AND her son-in-law for titillation is incredibly sexist.
They wouldn’t have had Elrond kiss his father-in-law to “save” him. Everyone would’ve rightfully been disgusted. So why is it okay to do this to Galadriel?
Elrond wouldn’t kiss Gil-Galad, or Celebrimbor, or his bff Durin to “save” them. We would all recognize this as sloppy OOC writing just meant to stir up shippers. So why is it acceptable to do to Galadriel? Being a female character is not an invitation to use her as fan service ship bait. Not once but TWICE.
The way the score swells and the kiss is deep and framed as romantic (even though he’s handing her something and didn’t need to shove himself on her like that at all!), despite the fact that Galadriel is married and elves are by nature monogamous (so much so that forcing yourself on them can even KILL them). As if everything about the narrative framing is subconsciously telling you to ignore Galadriel’s POV and the discomfort she would be feeling and be moved by how “meaningful” this kiss is. But also it’s a deception so don’t get mad! So incredibly transparent.
The fact that they also made her an arrogant idiot that fell for Sauron’s manipulations, when in Tolkien’s canon she is described as one of first to see through him, is also a telling choice. Especially when it would’ve made more sense to have Celebrimbor be the one manipulated and fooled.
So why have it be Galadriel? Why not do their weird ship-teasing bullshit between Annatar and Celebrimbor? At least it might serve the story then.
It’s because she is “female elf”, and therefore she has to be mean, violent, selfish, and stupid. But she isn’t allowed to be criticized either! That’s their idea of a “strong” female character.
So yeah. Personally I find that incredibly sexist.
So for that, I rate ROP a big old “cast it into the fire”.

Elwing taking bath and waiting for Eärendil's homecoming...
(lyrics are from Hildegard von Blingin's bardcore version of Summertime Sadness btw)
I always thought it was unfair that they called it the star of Eärendil and not the star of Eärendil and Elwing.
Swordmaker of Gondolin
This Guy Is LEGIT Living The Story of Beren and Luthien and Doesn’t Even Know It
I saw this linked on Twitter and I just about fell out of my chair laughing at the idea.
Sweet southern boy is living a CLASSICAL MYTH but is too GenZ and brainrotted to realize it!
I hope he updates. I NEED to know if he’ll see her again and if he will figure it out.
To anyone who believes fairy tale romances never happen in real life, may I remind you that JRR and Edith Tolkien met and experienced a forbidden love in their youth, and then were separated for five whole years because of his guardian’s rules that he could not date till he was 21, and she got engaged to someone else only because she assumed he’d forgotten her and lost hope that she could ever be with him, but then on his 21st birthday, he wrote her a letter saying he still loved her and wanted to marry her, she responded basically saying ‘if I’d known you hadn’t left me on the shelf, I would never have said yes to anyone else,’ then a week later she greeted him at the train station and then immediately dumped her fiancé, and they got married and she converted to his religion and danced for him in a flowering field far away from the trenches into which he was drafted, which left such an impression that he crafted an entire story about the most beautiful maiden in the world who danced in the woods and made enormous sacrifices to be with the man she loved, and they had four kids and remained faithful to each other and blissfully grew old together and their gravestones are now marked with the names of that same fictional couple that he created, who broke every rule and overcame every possible obstacle to be together and get a happy ending, who only did all that because he based it all on their own real love story.
Knowing all this has always made this bit of Beren’s song instantly reduce me to tears:
Though all to ruin fell the world
and were dissolved and backward hurled
unmade into the old abyss,
yet were its making good, for this—
the dawn, the dusk, the earth, the sea—
that Lúthien on a time should be!
Tolkien straight up wrote a poem that said “the world could end, but it wouldn’t have all been pointless, because she was in this world, however briefly, and that justified all the rest.” Kills me.
Who can outdo Wife Guy Tolkien? Dude was writing elaborate AUs where his wife is an impossibly beautiful magic-wielding immortal elf princess who fights Satan and wins to rescue her human boyfriend from Satan’s doom fortress. Flawless.
And the best part of all of this is that it was real.
This isn’t just a story. This really happened.
And if you’re wondering how they managed it, how it can even be possible, how this can sound so magical, and where is the reality?
Here are Tolkien’s own words:
Men are not [monogamous]. No good pretending. Men just ain’t, not by their animal nature. Monogamy (although it has long been fundamental to our inherited ideas) is for us men a piece of ‘revealed ethic,’ according to faith and not the flesh. The essence of a fallen world is that the best cannot be attained by free enjoyment, or by what is called “self-realization” (usually a nice name for self-indulgence, wholly inimical to the realization of other selves); but by denial, by suffering. Faithfulness in Christian marriages entails that: great mortification.
For a Christian man there is no escape. Marriage may help to sanctify and direct to its proper object his sexual desires; its grace may help him in the struggle; but the struggle remains. It will not satisfy him—as hunger may be kept off by regular meals. It will offer as many difficulties to the purity proper to that state as it provides easements.
No man, however truly he loved his betrothed and bride as a young man, has lived faithful to her as a wife in mind and body without deliberate conscious exercise of the will, without self-denial. Too few are told that—even those brought up in ‘the Church’. Those outside seem seldom to have heard it.
When the glamour wears off, or merely works a bit thin, they think that they have made a mistake, and that the real soul-mate is still to find. The real soul-mate too often proves to be the next sexually attractive person that comes along. Someone whom they might indeed very profitably have married, if only—. Hence divorce, to provide the ‘if only’.
And of course they are as a rule quite right: they did make a mistake. Only a very wise man at the end of his life could make a sound judgement concerning whom, amongst the total possible chances, he ought most profitably have married! Nearly all marriages, even happy ones, are mistakes: in the sense that almost certainly (in a more perfect world, or even with a little more care in this very imperfect one) both partners might have found more suitable mates. But the ‘real soul-mate’ is the one you are actually married to. In this fallen world, we have as our only guides, prudence, wisdom (rare in youth, too late in age), a clean heart, and fidelity of will…
(Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, pp. 51-52)
The answer isn’t magic.
It isn’t destiny.
It isn’t fantasy.
Love is a choice we make every single day.

i think my favorite type of relationship trope is "stopped believing in love a long time ago" and "genuinely doesn't think they're worthy of love" falling for each other in the MOST romantic way possible
sometimes I just want to play around with a Regency AU... Mr Thorin was a bit of a wallflower before Mr Baggins arrived. 🌹
