The Uncanny X-Men #241 - Fan the Flames
In the basement of the orphanage where Cyclops and Jean found Scott and Madelyne's son, Christopher Summers (back in X-Factor #35), Madelyne Pryor meets Mr. Sinister, who tells Madelyne she can call him "Father." Sinister says he brought Madelyne into being. She doesn't believe him. She says he's the mastermind behind the Marauders who tried to murder her and ZAM! She extends a hand, blasting Sinister with a bright energy pulse that knocks him to the ground. Madelyne sends her demon guards after Sinister, but Sinister easily kills them and N'astirh teleports away. Sinister binds Madelyne in several chains that he conjures from thin air.
Meanwhile, the X-Men battle the Marauders in Manhattan. It's an intense battle: Storm creates a powerful wind, Rogue throws a car, and Psylocke tries to knock out all the Marauders telepathically. Havok and Dazzler are blasting Marauders with their powers. Demons watch the battle from a distance, saying they'll eat whoever's left. Weird stuff starts happening in this battle - a mailbox starts talking and eats a human, "police" show up riding flying demons, and Marauders who were dead (Riptide, back in #211) have returned. Colossus doesn't understand what's going on. Storm says it's New York, what does he expect?
Back in the orphanage, Sinister explains to the captured Madelyne Pryor that she is a "replicant" of Jean Grey - he created her using a blood and tissue sample of Jean and all Madelyne's "memories" are fake. At first, Madelyne didn't develop mutant powers, which disappointed Sinister greatly. But one night, Madelyne's powers appeared and she screamed Scott's name and said "fire... life incarnate... now... forever... Phoenix" before collapsing in Sinister's arms. N'astirh watches this discussion from afar.
