female characters meme: [5/5] non-warrior characters // Allura (Voltron: Legendary Defender)

âweâre fighting, arenât we? the message said harry was back, and we were going to fight! iâll have to get a wand, thoughâŚâ
Let me just say this again to be clear
Things that ACTUALLY EXISTED FOR REAL IN EUROPEAN HISTORY: Non-white people, mostly those of North African and Middle Eastern heritage who were immigrants, merchants, missionaries, mercenaries advisors, and scholars; female leaders, including the famed Warrior Queen Boudicca; and queer folk, seriously, Shakespeare wrote sonnets for dudes.
Things that did NOT actually exist for real in European History: Magic, faeries, dragons, wizards.
Q.E.D. The âwell, thereâs no black people/brown people/women leaders/gay people in this European inspired fantasy because that would be inaccurateâ rhetoric is bullshit.
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST YESTHIS PLEASE AND THANKS
So much fantasy is set in quasi âdark agesâ feudal Europe. Â Can we just take a sec and realize that Europe is that asshole who gets to be a continent even though heâs not really a continent. Â Heâs the jerk who, when he has a bad day, everyone starts calling it The Dark Ages. Â
FYI, âThe Dark Agesâ were a golden age for almost everyone else. Islam was booming, spreading and gathering up classical knowledge that would have been completely lost otherwise.  China was going through a golden age of its own unter the Tang empire and Song empires, during which China grew and traded so much and so widely that they ran out of metal for coins and had to invent paper money (they also invented gunpowder).  And letâs not forget that, while we have relatively few written records from this region, the evidence suggests that Africa (ALL of Africa, both around the Mediterranean and in Sub-Saharan Africa) was booming as well, creating empires of their own, trading with Islamic travelers and building gorgeous goddamn cities.
During this massively diverse time period, there were gay emperors and female emperors in China, the most traveled man in the world was an Islamic scholar and one of the wealthiest men in the world was an African Muslim king.

âWeâre fighting, arenât we? The message said Harry was back, and we were going to fight!â
Quite a few people requested some form of trait/personality generator, and hereâs the result! Â I wanted to keep it vague enough that the options could work for any universe, be it modern, fantasy, scifi, or anything else, so these are really just the basics. Remember that a character is much more than a list of traits, and this should only be used as a starting pointâ I tried to include a variety of things, but further development is definitely a must.
Could pair well with the gender and sexuality generator.

04/10/13 - dreams
she is a bloodied flower revelling in pain and power.
power (n.s.) // for @feyreacheron (via theriverwrites)
we sensible girls. We donât hold with things like haints, now do we?
âHm, yeah. There used to be this absolutely cockamamie story they used to tell us about this girl. She wasnât much older than you, I think. Pretty young thing, all hope, and expectation. Thought she might be better than her mother, went hungry tryinâ to beat a dead woman. Say she took up a job with a white man. You know taking care of his babies, lookinâ after his wife.â Phoebe looks towards to the young girl, intrigued. The young girl continues,
âYoung thing hated it. Some women ainât meant to take care of things. Some ainât meant to hem and sew, but she did it and she did it well.â The young girlâs eyes seem to glow brighter as she speaks, excitement building as she retold the story.
âBut men get hungry. Wanted somethinâ the girl had but didnât want to give. He wanted her body. He wanted a young thing, an exotic thing he can control. He wanted her, but she didnât budge. Man donât got a lot of power in this world, but they donât like for the small amounts they have to be tested. The White man told everybody the girl was a thief, that she was nothing but a problem. Nobody would take her in after that.â
âSad story.â Phoebeâs neck prickled with sweat, and her hands slid against the pleather.
âGets worse if you can believe it. Poor thing mightâve starved if she didnât put a curse on him. That curse was so bad, so wicked that it took his wife, his kids, his money and his mind. Littles chants of two or three words turned this great, powerful man into a boy. He wandered, drank, gambled away his last red cent. Spent all his time lookinâ for somethinâ that burned worse than the spell. âCourse men donât take no credit for they own misery.â Stranger chuckles. âNah, they go lookinâ for the little Negro witch.â
âOh.â Humming, noises fill in the seconds of silence. Breathing so hard it pushes the car like a wind in a sail. Radio stopped playing. Thereâs only static and clicks and whirs.
âNo deed by a woman goes unpunished. Especially no Negro woman. White men got friends in white, friends in hoods. White men gather together to speak loud, make the whole town quake in fear. The only thing the poor girl has to do is press her ear to the right door and hear words like âhangingâ and âtreeââŚâ
âOh,â Phoebe says, shoulders falling.
âNaturally, the girl gets scared. She starts wonderinâ if she might die if she might follow her mother into the dark ground. She donât thinkâ she runs. Figures if sheâs fast enough, she could get to the main road and find somebody to take pity on a poor Negro girl. Figures somebody might give her a ride into the next town so she could lie low, hide her face.â
âDid she get her mercy?â Phoebe asks, barely concealed hope in her eyes.
âShe got her death.â The girl turns to the stranger, lifting her brows.
âMen caught up with her?â
âNah. It was a horse cominâ faster than she could move. Trampled her.â Breath. Swallow. The whir and static and click. âSay it took apart her face, tore her witchinâ mouth. Devilish beauty rendered useless by Godâs Almighty hand.â

Writing Characters with Enhanced Senses
Characters with extraordinary senses come up a lot. Maybe your character is of supernatural or alien origin, or maybe they were just born with a genetic quirk. Maybe they have a sensory disorder that only makes their hearing seem extraordinary. There are lots of reasons why a character might have extraordinary senses and a lot of different ways those senses might be put to use, but here are some of the drawbacks you might consider when writing a character who has a super sniffer, excellent eyesight, or high-quality hearing!
Sight: If your character has super sight, chances are that they can see farther and more clearly than anybody else, which is pretty cool except that the human eye can still only really focus on one thing at a timeâŚso your character might want to be careful not to get distracted when theyâre, say, crossing the street. If theyâre watching a burglary occur a thousand yards away, they might not notice the car that just whipped around the corner behind them. Other super-drawbacks might include heightened sensitivity to light, color, or movement - and you have to remember that nobody can see three-hundred-sixty degrees at all times, so your character is probably going to have a blind spot (unless theyâre an owl). Also, they may frequently look like theyâre staring off into space when theyâre really just watching something very intently.
Hearing: Have you ever been standing in a crowd of people who are all talking at the same time? Now imagine if you had super hearing! It can be hard to pick out individual pieces of information or even follow a single conversation when you can hear everyone in a six-block radiusâŚand itâs not just conversations. You can also hear every car, every pet moving around, every jingle of a key, the air moving through the vents, and so on and so forth. This is another one of those abilities that may make it look like your character is just really easily distracted - itâs not that they donât want to pay attention to their friends, itâs just that theyâre playing âname that tuneâ with a radio four blocks to the southeast!
Smell: Think about your shower routine, whatever it might be. How many scented products do you layer on your skin? Soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deoderant, maybe perfume or cologne, shaving cream or aftershave - the list goes on and on. If you had a super nose, you might be able to smell every single layer a person was wearing, and that kind of assault on the nose could be eye-wateringly overwhelming. Consider your reaction to someone wearing strong perfume! There are a lot of other types of smells in the world too, from cut grass and shoe polish to rotting garbageâŚand a lot of bodily functions have smells too: passing gas, excrement, or urine, menstruation, or sweating, for example. Your character might even be able to smell disease. This type of character might have to wear a mask or a scarf over their face to dull their super-sense, which might give them an odd appearance, but just imagine how much weirder it would look to be standing on a street corner sniffing at the air when all anyone else can smell is car fumes.
Taste: Whatâs the strongest flavor youâve ever tasted? Maybe it was something fishy, or spicy, or sour. Everyoneâs answer is bound to be different, but imagine if every single thing you ever ate or drank tasted that strong. Eventually you might get kind of tired of it and start preparing food that is more bland, right? Alternately, imagine if nothing ever just tasted like itself to you: youâre eating a french fry, but instead of tasting âfrench fryâ youâre tasting potato, salt, oil, the metal of the fryer, the latex in the gloves used to scoop them into the paper tray, the paper tray itselfâŚthat would be pretty overwhelming! The major drawback to super taste is that your character might have trouble eating out or eating in front of other people. When you taste a lemon, your face puckers upâŚjust think of how much more sour it would taste with a super tongue!
Touch: Did you know that every day you suffer a million tiny hurts and your brain just ignores them so that you can keep on functioning normally? If you had an enhanced nervous system, that might not be the case. Think about the number of tiny things we ignore every day: actions like walking, scratching, accidentally biting your tongue, or blinking could hurt pretty bad if you were super sensitive to touch! People with super touch might have a hard time getting comfortable all the time, and they might have to deal with not liking the feeling of clothes, being annoyed with air moving over their skin, or being extra-sensitive to physical contact. If a hug felt to me like someone was trying to break my ribs, Iâd avoid them too!
So what are some things to keep in mind when writing about characters with extraordinary senses, other than drawbacks? Here are some things to consider:
Set limits. Your character shouldnât be able to see past the curve of the earth - thatâs just silly! Likewise, if they can hear something happening through the entire planet, you may want to rethink. Consider things like range and clarity when youâre setting limits on super senses: how far away can they see things and how clearly can they see them, for example. When it comes to touch, this is a little more tricky, and you might want to think more about the direct effects of pressure on the character: how much pressure does it take before it hurts?
Enhanced senses require enhanced brainpower. I donât mean that they raise your characterâs IQ level, but consider how much effort it takes to sort through and process sensory information. If your characterâs brain canât handle it, they might be in a constant state of sensory overload.
Speaking of sensory overload, that might happen to your character sometimes anyway! Everyone faces extreme situations in their lives where their brains just canât keep up with the workload, and the threshold for that point is probably lower for people with super senses. If youâve got a character with super hearing and four people are trying to talk to them at once, they might experience sensory overload and have to go recover for a while, so do your research into sensory overload and what to do to help them.
Finally, their super sense is going to impact how they experience and relate to other people. Maybe your character doesnât remember a personâs name or face but theyâll never forget her voice. Maybe they just canât even be in the house with Great-Aunt Helen because she always wears the same musty old perfume and it gives your character a headache. Maybe your character appears to be constantly zoning out when really theyâre just looking closely at peoplesâ jewelry. How your character perceives others, and how others view your character, is going to be impacted by their ability - count on it.
If youâre writing about a character with super senses, I hope that this has been helpful and maybe even inspiring to you, and Iâd love to hear your thoughts too! Thanks for reading, and good luck!
