The John Watson- Sherlock Holmes Relationship
The Reichenbach Fall was an extremely emotional episodeâ Sherlockâs tears seemed to be real, his sacrifice was one he made to save his best friendsâ lives, but The Empty Hearse proved those theories wrong.Â
Sherlockâs tears were not real, and he didnât fake his death to save John because Mycroft had already removed Johnâs sniper. There was no risk to Johnâs life. He could have easily kept John from entering the fray, the street was blocked off, John wouldnât have had to have his heart broken the way it was, but the entire plan was built so that John could be tricked. âI donât have friends, I only have one.â What did the term âfriendâ mean to Sherlock when he said that? It obviously didnât mean the same thing to everyone.Â
It is obvious that if Sherlock has one genuine relationship in the story, it is his relationship with John. Despite the cruel âmagic trickâ he played on John, Series 3 lets us know for sure that Sherlock definitely cares for his army doctor. I have come across so many wonderful metas about the two of them, but hereâs how I think Sherlock and Johnâs relationship has blossomed and what the state of it is at the end of Series 3.Â
Series 1:
Episode 1- A Study in Pink
John is a loyal, brave army doctor who has just come home to London from the war. His therapist thinks he is haunted by his past, but really he craves to have it back. John needs the thrill to live, and he finds it in Sherlock. We know Sherlock also needs thrill to live (âmy mind rebels at stagnationâ), so the two are very much alike. Are these insatiable needs for danger healthy? No. Can any relationship between two people who crave danger be healthy? Absolutely not.Â
John shoots a man for Sherlock, and then both of them start laughing about it. The writers tend to keep saying that âJohn is usâ, perhaps when it comes to not understanding Sherlockâs deductions, yes he is, but otherwise, John is not us. But thankfully, when it comes to relationships, he makes more sense than Sherlock does. So we know after the 2nd episode that John likes Sherlock, but not as a person, just for the thrill that he provides. Sherlock, who isnât as emotionally invested in the relationship yet, can see Johnâs obsession very clearly. At the end of TSiP, we can all tell that Sherlock admires John almost as much as John admires Sherlock. No one bothers to compliment Sherlockâs skills, and not many tell him heâs an idiot as easily as John does.Â
Episode 3- The Great Game
Also known as the episode when Sherlock tells John that he is not a hero, and then throws a jacket laden with bombs off John at lightning speed. The entire series 1 makes clear to John that Sherlock is a sociopath, but one that is fun to be around. For some reason, and I have no observations to support this, I think John is trying very hard, like we are, to look at Sherlock in a positive light. He wants to believe Sherlock is a human human being. Sherlock, on the other hand, wants to keep his cold, hard exterior intact at all times. John is bound to be disappointed.Â
Series 2-Â
Episode 1- A Scandal in Belgravia
Irene Adler exposes and tries to play with the heart she can see in Sherlock, I especially like ivyblossomâs explanation of why Sherlock tries extra hard to impress Irene. She can see through him, and that makes him uncomfortable. John is visibly shocked by the relationship Sherlock has with Irene, and is perhaps able to confirm, to some extent, the humanity of Sherlock Holmes. John is starting to consider himself a friend of Sherlock Holmes the person, not Sherlock Holmes the detective. Somehow I doubt Sherlock thinks anyone at all sees him as a person, and doesnât understand the extent of Johnâs affection. Heâs just a fun app on Johnâs iPhone.Â
Episode 2- The Hounds of Baskerville
In this episode, Sherlock doesnât behave like much of a friend to John. He tricks John into thinking heâs locked in the same room as the hound, which is a very Sherlock Holmes-type thing to do, but not very friendly. Despite all of the tricks Sherlock plays on John, John doesnât expect to hear Sherlock say âhe doesnât have friendsâ. Sherlock later telling him he doesnât have friends, he just has one, once again reassures John that their friendship is intact. Sherlock says what he does because he doesnât want to waste time fighting with John, what with the game being ON. I know, itâs a terrible way of interpreting Sherlockâs statements, but Sherlock really isnât a great person, and this is the only way the next episodeâs betrayal makes sense.Â
Episode 3- The Reichenbach Fall
Sherlockâs fall is hard on John, because Sherlock wants it to be. The Holmes brothers, if the Lazarus plan is the truth, were very mean to John for the sake ofâŚnothing? (Here is the final problemâs explanation of why the Lazarus plan is wrong and if not, pretty darn evil.) How could Sherlock betray his best friend? Because he doesnât think John really cares about him all that much, and John may be a great âconductorâ, but he must do what he must and continue the solo act. Sherlock tears up on the roof to make his act more believable, and John is heartbroken. As his speech in front of the grave makes clear, John really cares about Sherlock as a person. How Sherlock could watch Johnâs speech and not change his mind about keeping the secret (now that we know heâs not a sociopath) is beyond me, but it might be possible that Sherlock thinks John is mistaken. No one could possible like the insufferable jackass who is Sherlock Holmes, and plus, John is in shock, heâll get over it.Â
Series 3-
Episode 1- The Empty Hearse
âWhat life? Iâve been away."Â
Remember, Sherlock always knew he was the spice in Johnâs life, but little more. He expects to surprise John. "Yay, John! The excitementâs back!â Does he think John has been hurting for two years? No, probably not. He doesnât think to apologize and tries to diffuse the tension too soon. Unfortunately for him, Johnâs having none of it. John has moved on and realizing that he was one of the only people who didnât know about Sherlockâs plan makes him underestimate how important he is to Sherlock. According to John, Holmes is a machine, and he never cared for John, but John still cares about him. However, Sherlock cannot keep his hero inside when John is in danger, and Charles Augustus Magnussen is excited to have found Sherlockâs pressure point. John Watson.Â
Episode 2- The Sign of Three
This episode was probably the best one for Johnlock shippers, and the one where we find out that Sherlock had no idea he was Johnâs best friend, and is flattered to discover it. Someone loves the machine? Time and time again Sherlock reminds the people around him, and us, that he is a sociopath. Then, we see him prepare obsessively for Johnâs wedding, we listen to him say heart-wrenching truths to John about his feelings for him and weâre stumped. This man may be a jerk, an asshole, a dickhead, have the emotional range of a teaspoon at most, but he is not a sociopath. He wants to be one very badly, and perhaps that is exactly why he is always saying he is one, so it sinks into everyoneâs minds, including his own.  The roles have been reversed, and now Sherlock Holmes cannot stop complimenting John Watson. âI will solve your crime, but John Watson will save your life."Â
Episode 3- His Last Vow
This episode is all about pressure points, and for some reason, Sherlock isnât Johnâs pressure point. Ever since discovering that Sherlock had deceived him, John is trying to distance himself from Sherlock. He isnât liking it, because he says itâs been "agesâ since heâs seen Sherlock, when itâs only been a month. He has to go to a crack house to bring the fun back into his existence. Even after Sherlock lets him know about the case surrounding Magnussen, you can tell he doesnât want Sherlock assuming heâs always going to be available to be a sidekick. You can sense John regressing back to thinking of Sherlock as a sociopath when he proposes to Janine for access into Magnussenâs office. He cannot believe Sherlock could do such a thing, which is unreasonable considering how in-your-face Sherlock gets about declaring heâs a sociopath. From that, itâs not a stretch to assume John doesnât really think Sherlock is as heartless as he says he is, but there are moments when he doubts his own assumptions.Â
At the end of series 3, the dynamic between the two has changed. Sherlock is the one willing to come back from the dead to protect John and shooting someone in the face for Johnâs wife (but I also have a theory that this isnât a sacrifice as much as a plan), and John may be slipping away, but probably not, because if thereâs a relationship thatâs all-enduring, itâs the John-Sherlock relationship.Â

Im standing impatiently as mama carefully applies eyeliner on my eyelids. I move a little too soon and mama tells me to stay put because the liner is not thin enough and do I want to look horrible on my 17th birthday. I give her an annoyed look but inside I am excited. I know Iron Man 3 will be amazing. ⌠The movie was great, Manjari and Kritika agreed with me. Weâre sitting in my room. Im leaning against my desk, Manju sits on my chair and Kritika is on my bed. Theyâre talking about dance and im watching, like always. We laugh perhaps a little too much. But thatâs how it is with my friends and when I join in, I canât say I dont like it. ⌠My cake is embellished with a myriad of candles, each of a different size and colour. Even the box of candles was insufficient to count how old I have become. I feel a little uncomfortable with my family watching me but I urge myself to get over it. I have to accept everyone now that im practically a grown up. I blow out the candles and everyone sings happy birthday. I smile. ⌠My dress is fluttering as the swing touches the night sky. I close my eyes and take in the breeze, its scent and the feeling it gives me. Then I open my eyes wide. I look at the sky and only the sky. The buildings get smaller and smaller until they do not exist. I am flying. ⌠Some days are planned great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them. My birthday was among them- one of the happiest yet.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Which things make life interesting?
Answer by Milena Rangelov:
Here is my list. I also vote for coincidences, mentioned many times efore. Anyways...
Irony. Life writes incredible stories.
Paradoxes. Two seemingly opposite truths, valid at the same time. Paradoxes expand our minds and help us see the world that isn't black and white.
Flow. The emotional state when you do something and forget about the time, space, outer world, you just let yourself flow. That is the ultimate expressions of your strengths. Divine feeling.
Finding connections. That is the basis of creativity. When we find connections we witness the harmony of the Universe. "Oh, it all makes sense now!"
Big ideas. These shift our thoughts away from everyday problems and nonsense.
Humor. Obviously, the ability to find something funny in adversities makes life fun and so much easier.
Idea exchange. "If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas," said George Bernard Shaw. Let's exchange our ideas. Let's expand.
The fact that everything can be seen differently.
Transformation. The only constant of life. Everything is changing all the time. Which is kinda sad. Which is kinda awesome. Choose how do you want to change. Don't keep yourself stuck. Life is more interesting and dynamic that way.
Now. Now is the only thing that has no end. We rarely apprehend that all we have is NOW, tiny slice of reality, where we are just as we are, exactly where we need to be. Now is the source of joy, happiness, peace, love. Now is the field of infinite possibilities.
Thanks for asking this wonderful question. Writing the answer was fun. Logical!

What are some of the most important things that we should be informed about in life?
Answer by Nelson Wang:
I'm 30 years old. I wish I could travel back in time. If I could, I would sit down with myself at 18 years old and give this life advice. I can't time travel, so I'll just write this article instead. Here are the top 10 life lessons I would pass on: 1. Your health is your #1 priority - If you can't take care of yourself, you won't be able to take care of anyone else. Treat your body as your #1 priority. How do you do this? Be conscious of how your body feels - I love cupcakes. I love chicken nuggets. I love burgers. When I was a kid, I used to be eat tons of this stuff and would feel just fine. Seriously, I used to eat 36 chicken nuggets in one sitting! Nowadays, if I eat any of these, my body feels off. If I eat a fruit and vegetable smoothie though, I feel lighter, energetic and healthier. Your body sends you signals all the time when you eat. Pay attention to them. And nourish your body. You probably won't be perfect. I'm not. I still eat a burger from time to time. But if you try to keep your body healthy more often than not, you'll be in much better shape long term. Make time to exercise by establishing a routine - We are creatures of habit. Creat good habits when it comes to working out. One way I was able to consistently workout is to have it on my schedule for 5:30 PM every day after work. I also gave up my car in the city (I live in San Francisco) so the only way for me to get home is by running or walking. 2. Take risks - There is a risk to not taking a risk. It's complacency. It's stagnancy. When I was young I was really afraid of taking risks. I was afraid to join startups, even after being in the technology field for 7 years. Finally, I saw a friend of mine join a really hot startup and he convinced me to make the jump. When I joined Box just 3 years ago, it was one of the best decisions of my life. I went into a role with a steep learning curve, learned how to build up a business unit from scratch, traveled to over 50 cities in a year and met some of the most amazing people at work - some of which will be friends for life. The reality is that you usually can't be 100% certain about anything until you actually experience it. So dip your toes into the water. Speaking of risks... 3. Take smart risks - Maybe you shouldn't dip that toe in the water. Not all risks are worth taking. Thinking about the expected value you can get by taking that risk and make sure it's a smart bet. Don't be foolish and take a risk that doesn't have the appropriate upside. Do as much due diligence as you can in advance. 4. It's okay to put your phone down - Today, I was waiting to onboard my flight from Boston to San Francisco. I was looking at my phone and after getting mental fatigue from staring at a screen for an obscene amount of time (1.5 hours with only small breaks in between), I decided to look at everyone around me. Guess what I saw? A ton of people with their heads down...looking at their phones. Sometimes getting a ton of information on demand isn't always a good thing. The next time you have dinner with friends, put your phone down. You'll probably have a great conversation and a lot of laughs. The next time your father tells you about his day, really listen to what he's saying. The next time you're traveling in a foreign country, take in the amazing culture and immerse yourself. Learn the language. Try the different foods. And put down the phone. Unless you're taking an Instagram photo. #BecauseSomeFoodsAreInstagramWorthy 5. Less is more - When it comes to stuff, you don't need a lot of it. Somewhere along the way, we were told that accumulating material goods resulted in happiness. While money will be absolutely important for basic necessities like food and shelter, using it to accumulate a ton of stuff doesn't typically equate to happiness. Stuff has administrative debt. Have a lot of clothes? The debt is a bigger closet. Have a really fancy luxury car? The debt is a high insurance premium, costly maintenance packages and a huge headache if you ever get into an accident. Clean out the clutter and donate it. I do this at least once a year. Ask yourself - "Do I really need this?" Simple is good. 6. More is better - Wait, didn't I say "less is good?" Well, there's an exception to that rule. More is better - At least when it comes to experiences. Traveling the world can expand your horizons. You can learn new cultures and redefine the way you see the world. Who knows, you might even meet the love of your life while traveling. Money used for experiences can be life changing. Speaking of currency... 7. The most important currency in life is time - I had a family friend who spent much of his life saving up money to eventually live the life he always wanted. After decades of saving, he was involved in a tragic accident. He never had the chance to live the life he always dreamed of. Money is important, but time is even more important. Utilize money to help you find more time. Time with your family. Time with your friends. Time with your spouse. Time with kids. Time with people you want to help. There are 525,600 minutes in a year. How do you spend your time? 8. Not every fire is a real fire - Nelson, you need to start working on this (insert perceived work catastrophe here) right now! Fix it! I call those work fires. I used to hear about work fires early on in my career a lot. And I would pull my hair out in the process. Yes, sometimes these work catastrophes really had to be fixed immediately. But not all of them. Sometimes, people would forget about it after a week. Even if it wasn't fixed. So take a deep breath, realize it's not (usually) the end of the world and size up the situation. And then fix it. But don't let it get to you. Own it. 9. Go 3 "Why's" deep - It's easy to get caught up in the tactical parts of life and work all the time. When I was building an iPhone app with my two co-founders, we had an idea for a dating app. At one point, we ended up rolling out a few different features for the app. One change was to gate the app after three swipes and to ask people to share the app on their social networks before they could swipe more. "Brilliant!" we exclaimed. "We'll get so many more users on this app." Or so we thought. The new feature didn't make an impact at all. When we huddled during our next meeting, one of the co-founders, Steve, challenged me on the app. Looking back now, asking the 3 Why's would have helped us tremendously. Here's an example below: 1. Why are you building this app? "There's a huge business opportunity since there's a gap in this niche dating space." 2. Why do your users want to use this app? "Because they want to fall in love." 3. Why are you goals different from your users? There was a long silence on the phone. My mind was blown. I realized this whole time that the right way to build a product is to have an extreme passion and obsession around driving an amazing customer experience. My core why should have been "help people fall in love," rather than "it's a great business opportunity." I had been thinking about it wrong the entire time and the 3 Why's exercise helped me see that. So what did we do? We went back to the drawing board. 10. Be yourself - You're weird. You're unique. You're different. And that's awesome. Be the great person you were meant to be. When I was young, I used to smile during conversations all the time, even when I wasn't feeling happy. I thought "Gosh, this will make people more comfortable talking to me because I look happy all the time." One day, one of my best friends pulled me aside and gave me some sage advice (I'm paraphrasing): "Hey bud, you know, sometimes when I think something isn't funny, I don't laugh for the sake of laughing. If I don't find something interesting or I'm not happy at the moment, I won't smile either. I want to show people exactly what I feel." That was a game changing moment for me. Ever since then, I've always tried to do exactly that. I want people's experiences with me to be 100% genuine and transparent. After all, isn't that the best way to deeply connect with someone? Be authentic. Be yourself. Be all the awesomeness you were meant to be.
What are some of the most important things that we should be informed about in life?
What should one do in their 20s to avoid regrets in their 30s and 40s?
Answer by Ritika Ojha:
I am in my early 30s, and few things i can guarantee for sure, 1. Get an education. Period. 2. Read, read, read. Books can be your mentor. You get to have a sneak peak inside the author's mind. 3. Exercise. A healthy body is your gift to yourself in the long run 4. Relationships may or may not work. People grow up and at times grow apart. Be honest, as truth is always a far kinder alternative. 5. Learn the art of storytelling. This will help you to form bonds with people. Present your views in an articulate way. Friends, family, strangers, colleagues, will need to see your story from your perspective, (and you don't need to raise your voice or get into arguments to get your points across ) 6. Learn to try things out of your comfort zone. As you grow older, you are restricted by age, health and million other things. 7. Avoid people who bring you down. 8. Be kind and respectful to people. 9. Lastly, you can never undo your past. You will make mistakes, and you should make efforts to learn from it. Learn to forgive and let go. Regrets suck the life out of you.
What should one do in their 20s to avoid regrets in their 30s and 40s?
