feel free to change pronouns as necessary.
â This was the time of day when I wished I were able to sleep. High school. â â How is he holding up? â â I could easily be frowning out of boredom. â â Is there any danger? â â Let me know if it gets too bad. â â Thanks for doing this. â â Their instincts told them what their conscious minds would never understand: we were dangerous. â â You werenât going to do anything. I could see that. â â Iâd wished, at the time, that I could explain to her exactly what would have happened if my lips, and the teeth behind them, had gotten anywhere near her. â â I acted as a lookout, for lack of a better word, for my family. To protect us. â â Heâs gorgeous, of course, but donât waste your time. He doesnât date. Apparently none of the girls here are good-looking enough for him. â â So, is the new one afraid of us yet? â â In that instant, I was nothing close to the human Iâd once been; no trace of the shreds of humanity Iâd managed to cloak myself in remained. â â I was a predator. She was my prey. â â I was sane again. I could think again. And I could fight again. I could fight against what I didnât want to be. â â Iâll miss you. No matter how short a time youâre gone. â â On the contrary, Iâm the one whoâs being rude - abominably rude. â â Donât be a gentleman. â â Youâre a thousand times lovelier than the stars, ______. â â Maybe youâre not as scary as you think you are. â â Very human, ______. Why donât you punch the wall while youâre at it? â â It would look more impressive if you did it, baby. â â Actually, I feel a little sick. â â So you kill one human. Thatâs hardly the end of the world. â â Youâve got to learn to get over things. â â What is it about her? â â ________ is staring at you. â â He doesnât look angry, does he? â â I didnât have a chance to introduce myself last week. â â How do you know my name? â â Oh, I think everyone knows your name. â â I thought there was something different about your eyes. â â She was advanced then, intelligent for a human. â â Itâs too bad about the snow, isnât it? â â Why did you come here, then? â â Her smile just made me want to smile in response - to be in on the secret. â â Hasnât anyone ever told you? Life isnât fair. â â You put on a good show. But Iâd be willing to bet that youâre suffering more than you let anyone see. â â Why does it matter to you? â â I clearly was not as perceptive as I gave myself credit for. â â Am I annoying you? â â Iâm more annoyed at myself. â â Iâd never expended so much effort to understand someone in all my life. â â I find you very difficult to read. â â Nobody died. â â You wouldnât be the first one to mess up. No one would judge you too harshly. â â No, it would not be better if I got it over with. â â Iâve never seen him actually talk to anyone for more than a word here or there. â â It was like she thought she was dangerous in her decrepit truck. â

Writing Prompt #665
For all the impulsive, drunk purchases I had made in my life, I could say that, without a doubt, this one was the weirdest.
For all the impulsive, drunk purchases I had made in my life, I could say that, without a doubt, this one was the weirdest.Â
I rested my head on my folded arms, which were covered by the lilac sleeves of my shirt, staring at the tiny grey box sitting on the counter, just meters in front of my hooded ash eyes. It was no bigger than a fingernail you would find on someoneâs thumb and itâs edges were slightly rounded, almost as if it had been used a lot prior to my purchase. I couldnât remember how much it cost, I do remember being black out drunk though. Although, when I woke up, I found nearly 100 dollars missing from my wallet, but, Iâm not sure I cleared my wallet buying drinks, or the object, or maybe both.
I stared at it, waiting for it to do something. I have expected it to grow legs and begin to wander, or maybe, begin emitting some type of radiation that would kill me years later. But, it didnât seem to do anything. I let out a bitter sigh, pushing myself up off the counter as I turned away from the object. Great, I thought, I just blew my money on a tiny grey box.Â
At least, I thought I had âblownâ my money on it.
My anger grew as I turned back to it, narrowing my eyes and resting my now balled fists on either side of the object. I stared at it, a childlike sense of hope that maybe my stare would be enough persuasion for the object to do something. Anything.Â
My impatience got the best of me, as I let out a low growl,Â
âHello?!â
...
Nothing.Â
I banged my fist on the counter, standing up quickly and turning away from it. My thick, black eyebrows curved downward in disappointment. I looked down at my hand, which had been throbbing due to the momentum of the blow I had given the table. A red patch had formed on my chocolate colored skin, from the blow I had delivered to the counter.Â
Suddenly, I heard a weird sound come from behind me. I turned, eyes falling on the grey box, which now had a slowly blinking red light on the top. The sound continued, almost sounding like a song. My eyebrows arched in confusion as I lowered myself to be eye level with the object. The sound stopped, leaving my kitchen silent once more. After waiting a few moments, hopeful for another action, I sighed and stood up, turning to face my fridge.Â
A few magnets were sat on itâs white surface. One was what I got from my desk job, some holiday party, another from my aunt that lived in Canada. It served as a reminder that every once and awhile I should call her, let her know how I was doing.
âBooting up, please wait.â
The voice was feminine, a thick British accent being present with in it.Â
And it was coming from the box.Â
My eyes widened slightly as the red blinking light turned green.
âBoot up complete, please state your name.â
I was shocked by what I was hearing, but I still acknowledged the objectâs question.
âUh, Dabria.â
âProcessing...Processing complete.â
âHello, âDabriaâ, we are going to be great friends.â

Rainbow Soul: A True Story
When I was young, my mother introduced the idea of love to me. She told me to love everyone, but then told me that I was destined to marry a man.Â
At the age of seven, I didnât know differently. I had only been taught that men marry women.Â
But when I was ten, everything changed.Â
I saw for the first time in my life that men love men and women love women. But as I watched my family look on in disappointment, I looked on with admiration.Â
These young people changed the laws to fit what they believed! What wasnât there to admire?
My parents...didnât agree.Â
I had my next view of this in 8th grade.Â
I was met with a new set of friends, and a boy whom had been the first to show interest in me.Â
But I didnât feel that way.
Waves of shame flowed through me, not because I had denied him, but because I had a crush on my best friend.Â
She had silky hair, a type of humor that was different, but something that I loved, a unique style that I admired and a personality that I loved.
But when I told my mother she frowned.Â
I remember sitting at the picnic table at Anderson's farm, tears running from my eyes as I stared at the table beneath my folded arms, my motherâs words echoing through my ears.
âYouâre just choosing to feel this way so you can fit in.â
It crushed my heart. How, how could my own mother not believe me. How could she discount my feelings to nothing more than an attempt to fit in.Â
Because of my mother, I never told that girl how I felt.
And now itâs too late.Â
It got worse in 9th grade, when my mom was disappointed with those I associated myself with. She thought that their identities and orientations were choices, choices, she said, that were affecting the light that others would see me in.Â
Ultimately, my mother has been scared of one thing.Â
That her only daughter is not interested in boys.Â
I remember sitting at the dinner table, as my brother asked about what it meant to be non-binary. I was excited in his interest, excited to tell him, but I was dumb-founded by my step-fatherâs response.Â
âTheyâre people who choose not to believe who they are. Theyâre like gay people. Theyâre not normal.â
It happened again the next day when my mother was probing me about the person I had recently been talking about. She said her and I pushed back, not her not she, them.
She continued to say, âIf she has female parts she is a woman,â that, âwe are too young to make these decisions.â
My stomach dropped, my heart broke. Â
The two people who were supposed to accept me, had destroyed my self-worth more than anyone else couldâve in less than 24 hours.Â
I stopped talking with my friends in an attempt to please my mother.Â
I stopped going to my favorite club.Â
I stopped being myself.
Up until two weeks ago.
I remembered, if my parents donât accept me, thatâs okay.
Because others do.
My friends, my teachers, my counselors, the leaders of GSA. They all accepted me.Â
So I guess Iâm finally comfortable to say,Â
I am pan and Iâm proud to be me.Â
Everybody have a social filter that keeps them from saying everything they think. Create a society where this filter doesnât exist and that those who have it are outcasts.
Itâs hard to be the least truthful person in the world.
I was walking to âCoffee and Creamâ, a coffee shop I frequent, early Saturday Morning. It was a winter day in New Amsterdam, meaning it was cold, but no snow fell upon the city sidewalks or rooftops. The streets were still busy though, my long black coat catching on multiple people as I walked.
Today, I was meeting up a with a friend, . A rare occurrence due to my..special quality.
You see, I have the tendency to lie to people. Not in a malicious way, but as a way to spare otherâs feelings. But, Iâm the only one.Â
Itâs weird, like thereâs this little voice in my head telling me what I can and cannot say, despite my actual thoughts, but, no one else seems to have it. I brought it up once, to my parents. They havenât spoken to me since.Â
I opened the coffee shop door, the ringing of the bell barely audible over the chatter filling the room. The shop was lit by ceiling lights which emitted warm yellow light. Slow jazz music played underneath the voices and people were scattered around the cozy coffee shop at small tables and comfortable arm chairs.Â
I spied my friend in the corner of the room, her wire rimmed glasses reflected the image from outside the window, the cold light illuminating her pale skin. She was wearing a long, butterscotch sweater and distressed black jeans. Her black hair was styled in a bun and her long, purple acrylic nails were tapping against the steaming coffee cup grasped in her hands.Â
I made my way over to her, sitting down at the table without invite like normal people do.Â
She looked up at me, a look of disappointment filling her face, âYou know Caitlyn, that hair color doesnât look good on you.â
I looked a piece of my hair, which was dyed blonde. I shrugged my shoulders.Â
She continued, âYou should dye it a color that doesnât clash with your darker skin tone, same with your clothes. Also, I know this workout program that will totally help slim you out, do you want the guy whoâs in charge of itâs number?â
I thought quickly, trying to not seem like my answer was going to be a lie, âYeah, I..would love that, thanks Gloria.â
The pause in my speech goes ignored, thankfully.Â
She reaches for her phone, typing quickly into it before my phone goes off.Â
âThere, I sent his info. Soooo, how did you like my research?â
Gloria had been doing research on Paranormal activity in the city (something that rarely exists) for years. I tried avoiding her so she wouldnât ask me to read her findings but, we ran into each other a month prior, and thatâs the first thing she asked. Her research was very in-depth, but in the end, not logical. Any normal person wouldâve told her this right? But Iâm not normal.Â
âIt, was, uh, great! I was super invested in it!âÂ
This time she seemed to pick up on my hesitation, âOh yeah? Would you want the rest of it?
No.Â
âYeah! O-of course!â
She caught that one.Â
âAre you lying?â
Yes.
âN-no! Why would I lie to you?â
She laughed, âI canât believe it. All this time, youâre a filter.â
My heart pounds, my hands shake.Â
She knows.Â
How to Absorb Your Textbook Better
Have you ever tried learning through osmosis? Chances are it probably didnât work. Passive reading almost never works when you need to remember something long term.
Recently I learned about a method of reading called the SQ3R method and has been used by students since the 1940s. SQ3R stands for survey, question, read, recite, and review.
Survey:
When surveying one should look at the introduction, conclusion, abstract, headers, pictures, charts and graphs. The goal is just to get a basic preview of what you will be reading.
Question:
Next, you want to ask yourself the following:
1. Do I know anything about this topic?/What prior knowledge do I have?
2. Is this related to anything else I have studied/anything else in this class?
3. What do I hope to learn from this reading?
Read:
Now you do the full reading, and try to answer the questions.
Recite:
Reciting is when you read out loud. While not for everyone, reciting is particularly effective in slowing down students who read too fast, and in assisting auditory learners in their understanding.
Review:
Many explanations of SQ3R vary, but an important step to do (at some point) is record notes on the most important facts of the reading and any lingering questions you have. Many people prefer to do this as their âreviewâ and pull the facts from memory (or from highlighted portions of the text). I prefer to take notes as I read. Either way, it is good to then review the notes you have written, pairing them down and expanding as needed. File these notes in a reliable system so you can review them later while studying for exams!
