summary: the reader and Dean have a chat after the latter is cured.
warnings/tags: mild angst, happy ending.
———
It was a cloudy afternoon as Dean and Sam relaxed by a serene lake that was located a couple of miles away from the bunker. They sat in fold-up chairs, sipping on some beers, and a comfortable silence surrounded them. They had mutually agreed to take a mini break from hunting after curing Dean.
“Hey, I have a question for you,” Dean spoke, breaking the silence.
“Shoot,” Sam answered.
“You’ve been…” Dean paused, thinking of his next words. “Kicked, bit, stabbed, possessed, and killed. Yet, you sprained your elbow?”
“Hey, it was more than a sprain,” Sam tried to defend himself and his older brother only scoffed in response, taking a long drink afterwards.
Sam smiled at the classic Dean response.
“How are you doing?” Sam asked, turning his torso in his chair to look at Dean.
“Golden,” Dean answered in what Sam would call the ‘Dean-fashion.’
“Come on, seriously?” Sam couldn’t help but press.
“Seriously, man, I’m good,” Dean insisted. “Taking some time for ourselves? Best decision we made in a while.”
The two fell into silence again before Sam asked quietly, “And… how are you and [y/n/n]?”
He wasn’t oblivious. He lived under the same roof, after all. Granted, he didn’t know the exact details about what happened. All he knew was that Dean and [Y/N] were not sharing a room anymore. He was ninety-nine percent sure that it was Dean’s idea only.
Also, every time Dean and [Y/N] were in the same space, it was tense and awkward. Dean had a difficult time meeting [Y/N]’s eyes; therefore, he would make up an excuse to leave the room while [Y/N] would watch his back with sad and longing eyes. Sam had tried asking [Y/N] if things were okay between her and Dean. However, she would only stumble over her words, unable to give him a reply, and he understood what was happening.
“Dean?” Sam prompted when his brother didn’t offer any reply.
“Yeah, yeah,” Dean cleared his throat, his eyes trained on the lake ahead. “We’re fine.”
“Dean,” Sam said with pointed eyes hidden behind his sunglasses.
“What?” Dean asked in defense. He was glad for his own sunglasses because he did not like the way Sam was looking at him at the moment.
“Come on, man, I know what you’re doing,” Sam shook his head.
“And, what am I doing?” Dean asked back.
“You’re pushing her away!” Sam exclaimed.
“I’m not!” Dean scoffed.
“You are!” Sam said back before taking a breath to calm himself. “Look, Dean, I get it. I know you. You’re guilty and you’re pushing her away.”
“Since when are you a relationship expert?" Dean asked with sarcasm lacing his tone.
Sam sighed in response.
“I’m not,” he said calmly, hoping to get through to his brother. “But, with our life, finding love like you and [Y/N] did is rare. What you two have is special, Dean. Don’t give up on it because of what happened. Don’t give up on her.”
Dean’s lips were pressed in a thin line. He knew Sam was right. It hurt like hell to push [Y/N] away when all he wanted was to hold her tight and never let her go.
However, the cruel words he threw at her as a demon continued to play in his mind on a loop and he was filled with utmost guilt that he couldn’t bear to be in the room as her. He thought she deserved so much better than him.
“When we- we lost you, she was miserable, man,” Sam spoke, thinking back to the days that followed Dean’s death and disappearance. “She’s always been a ray of sunshine despite the horrors we see every day. And, losing you broke her, Dean. Yet …”
He paused to chuckle sadly.
“Yet, every time I was around, she would put on a smile and act like she was okay. She took care of me just like you’ve been doing our whole lives,” he said somberly. “She made sure I ate, slept, and helped me with research. Trying to find you.”
Dean swallowed the lump in his throat as Sam continued to talk.
“All I’m saying is don’t give up on what you two have because of your guilt,” his younger brother advised. “The two of you have been through so much and don’t let this break you apart.”
Dean didn’t say a word in response and Sam only hoped the former would consider his words.
…
It was early evening and [Y/N] decided to get some fresh air. The bunker felt large and empty without the presence of Dean and Sam.
She was already dressed in a hoodie and leggings as she lounged in the bunker, doing some chores here and there. She threw on a coat over her hoodie and wore her boots. She also wore her black beanie before grabbing her gun and angel blade, tucking the weapons in the pockets of her coat. She exited the bunker and walked through the familiar path in the woods. She and Dean would often take a walk through the trails, so she knew her way around.
A sad sigh left her lips at the thought of Dean. It had been a few weeks since he was cured and brought back to normal. Well, as normal as he could be after everything he went through. She didn’t join the brothers when they decided they needed to get away for a while. She didn’t think Dean would like her joining him and Sam, especially after he had asked her for some space.
She buried her hands in her coat’s pockets with her eyes trained on the ground as she walked. She missed Dean. She knew he was feeling guilty of the things he had said and done to her when he was a demon. That was why he was pushing her away. It was his way of punishing himself. However, she wished he would give her a chance to sit down and talk to him.
She didn’t know for how long she walked before she ended up by a small lake. She wrapped her coat tighter around herself and looked around out of habit. Upon not finding anything suspicious, she turned her attention to the lake and stood with her arms wrapped around her torso, losing herself in her mind again.
She hoped Dean and Sam were okay. She knew Dean would feel guilty about the cruel things he had said to Sam as a demon. She hoped the brothers had a chance to actually talk and work things out between themselves.
About two days ago, Sam had texted her that Dean wanted to check out a case before returning home. She had texted Sam back to be careful. She wanted to reach out to Dean as well. But, she was afraid of pushing him when he had clearly asked for space from her. In the end, her heart won and she had sent him a simple text: Please be safe on the hunt. She was more than surprised when he read her message right away and replied ‘of course’ a few moments later. She held onto his response and hoped they would get a chance to talk once he came home.
She was pulled out of her thoughts when she heard a noise in the distance. It felt like twigs and leaves being crushed under footsteps. She turned around instantly, but her brief moment of alert disappeared when she saw who it was.
When he noticed that he had gained her attention, Dean paused in his steps. He watched her eyes widen a little and lips part in surprise. While she stayed rooted in her spot, Dean resumed moving towards her, closing the distance between them step by step.
“Dean?” she whispered when he stopped in front of her just an arm’s length away. Despite her shock, her eyes lit up at the sight of him and his heart jumped at that.
“Hey,” he whispered back, his eyes shifting between her face and the ground.
“I- I didn’t know you were coming home today,” she replied and he looked at her again.
“Uh, yeah, Sammy and I wrapped up the case so we figured we’d come back,” he answered and she nodded.
“Did the hunt go okay? You’re not hurt, are you?” her brows furrowed in concern as her gaze moved over his face and neck.
“No, no, I’m good,” he reassured her before she stressed herself out.
“Sam’s okay too?” she asked.
“Yep, he’s fine too,” he confirmed and she nodded, a small exhale of relief leaving her lips.
The next few moments passed with them simply gazing at each other before [Y/N] broke the contact.
“We should go back,” she said, clearing her throat, looking up at him again with a small smile. “You must be tired after all the travelling.”
She moved to walk around him when his words stopped her:
“How can you still look at me like that?” he asked, his voice breaking a little.
“What do you mean?” she asked back and he turned to look at her.
“How can you still stand there and look at me like that?” his beautiful green eyes were filled with pain as he spoke. “Even after all the horrible things I said and did, you’re standing here, looking at me like- like I’m someone special!”
Her eyes teared at his words and she blinked a few times to keep them at bay.
“You’re special to me, Dean,” she said with utmost sincerity, looking up at him. “You always will be.”
“Why?” he asked, his voice rough and she didn’t miss how his eyes were watery.
“Because, I love you,” she replied easily. “When I said I love you for the first time, I meant that in good times and bad times. I’m not going to stop loving you just because we hit a roadblock.”
“God, [y/n/n], that was not just a roadblock,” he threw his head back for a moment, looking up at the sky to blink his tears away before facing her again. “I was a demon! I said awful things to you. I threatened you! And, I- I-”
It hurt her so much to see him in pain and she forgot about the space he had asked from her. She stepped forward and cupped his cheeks in her palms, meeting his eyes.
“That was not you, Dean,” she said as firmly as possible. “You were a demon. You were not yourself!”
“But, it was me, [y/n/n]!,” he said bitterly, his hands clutching her wrists, his hold was desperate but gentle. “I wasn’t possessed or anything. It was me!”
“Okay, then, tell me something,” she spoke calmly, never dropping her gaze from his. “Would you, the real you, ever do or say those things to me? Would the real you ever insult me, threaten me?”
He shut his eyes tight and pressed his lips in a thin line when his mind replayed the events from the time he was a demon.
“No, Dean, look at me,” she pressed, caressing his stubbled cheek with her thumb, and he obeyed. “Tell me, would you?”
“Absolutely not, sweetheart,” he replied. “I could never.”
“And, would the real Dean ever abandon Sam?” she questioned.
“No,” he whispered, with a small shake of his head.
“That’s why Sam and I keep telling you that it wasn’t you,” she spoke, hoping he would understand her point. “Besides, our Dean would never treat Baby the way the other you did. Jeez, she was so dirty and she was a mess!”
Her words made him laugh softly and she smiled. It warmed her heart to see his smile after the rough few weeks they experienced.
“If you want to keep blaming yourself, then you should give Baby to either Sam or myself,” she said seriously and his eyes widened.
“Absolutely not!” he answered instantly. “I love you both but nope, not happening.”
She giggled, booping his nose, “I was just kidding.”
“Brat,” he muttered with a playful roll of his eyes and pulled her into his arms, hugging her as tight as possible.
[Y/N] was taken aback by his move, but returned his embrace without any hesitation.
“I missed you, Dean,” she whispered, pressing her face against the crook of his neck. At her words, his arms tightened around her form and he dropped his forehead on her shoulder.
“I missed you, [y/n/n],” he said back, breathing in her scent.
She lifted her face from his neck and he moved as well so that he could look at her, while keeping their arms around each other.
“Please don’t push me away again,” she requested softly. “I mean, I get that we can’t be attached at the hip all the time. But, please don’t shut me out.”
“I won’t,” he assured her, cupping her left cheek with his right hand. “Staying apart from you was hell.”
“I felt the same,” she replied, cradling his jaw with one hand. “But, I didn’t want to push you. You’ve already been through so much.”
“I’ll be okay as long as I have you,” he said back.
She smiled and leaned into his palm, sighing. Her smile drew his attention, his gaze falling on her lips and he instinctively pulled her closer with one arm. [Y/N] noticed the movement and her breath hitched.
“I- can I kiss you?” he asked, almost hesitantly.
“Dean,” she said lovingly. “You never have to ask.”
She leaned up and he met her halfway, pressing his lips against hers. The kiss was slow, calm, and full of warmth. After several moments, they pulled away, smiling at each other.
“Let’s go home?” he asked.
“Home, it is,” she agreed.
Smiling, he threw an arm around her shoulder, keeping her tucked to his side. She wrapped her arms around his torso and leaned into his warmth as they made their way towards the bunker.

“We need to talk,” Hanna stated and her tone left no room for a response. A baffled [Y/N] had no choice but to follow her best friend. Hanna walked into an empty classroom and waited for [Y/N] to enter before closing the door behind them.
“What’s wrong, Han?” [Y/N] asked when the blonde stopped in front of her.
Hanna didn’t reply. Instead, she held up her cellphone for [Y/N] to see the content on the screen. [Y/N]’s frown disappeared and her eyes widened a little at what she saw. On the screen of Hanna’s phone was a photo of herself and Jason. She realized it was taken after their first kiss as she and Jason stood with their foreheads leaned against each other, his palms holding her cheeks tenderly. The picture was dark, but the streetlight behind them illuminated enough of their features. Beneath the picture was a text:
‘Looks like your ship is sailing, Hanna banana! – A.’
Of course, [Y/N] thought with a sigh. Of course, A had been watching her and Jason. She was aware of the possibility of A stalking her during her conversation with Jason; however, she had hoped A had something else to do and unfortunately, she was wrong.
“How could you keep this from me?” Hanna asked, lowering her cellphone. She was hurt and a little upset as she looked at [Y/N]. “You know that I’ve been rooting for you two since I found out that you liked him.”
“I know and I’m sorry,” [Y/N] replied, her eyes pleading.
“Did this happen last night?” Hanna asked.
“Yes,” nodded [Y/N]. “I was so happy and you were the first person I wanted to talk to. But, then, you called me and you were upset about Caleb leaving. I didn’t have the heart to make it about me. I just wanted you to be okay.”
Hanna’s shoulders slumped as she exhaled heavily. [Y/N] took a step forward and placed one hand on Hanna’s forearm.
“I really am sorry,” she said with sincerity. “You know I would never keep this from you.”
“I know,” Hanna replied. “I want to hug you and smack you at the same time.”
“Hey!” [Y/N] exclaimed, pouting, and Hanna laughed, wrapping her arms around [Y/N] in a bear hug.
“I’m so happy for you, [y/n/n]!” she gushed, squeezing [Y/N] in her hold before pulling back from the hug to face her. “You have to tell me everything! Did you talk to him first? Has he liked you this whole time too? You two kissed, didn’t you? How was it? Did you kiss him first? Or, did he?”
Before the blonde could continue, [Y/N] grabbed her hands, halting her, “Hanna, you need to breathe!”
“I’m fine!” Hanna said back and [Y/N] laughed.
“I’ll tell you everything, of course,” [Y/N] said. Her eyes and smile were soft as she spoke, “It was a little unexpected and I couldn’t believe it was happening. I still can’t believe it happened.”
Hanna grinned happily, observing her friend’s content expression. Before she could ask for more details, her phone rang, grabbing [Y/N]’s attention as well.
“It’s just Em,” Hanna reassured [Y/N] before answering the call.
‘Hey, where are you?’ Emily asked Hanna. ‘And, is [y/n/n] with you?’
“I’m in the classroom next to the library,” Hanna replied, frowning. Something in Emily’s tone told her that whatever was coming next was not good. “And, yeah, she’s with me.”
‘Okay, we’ll meet you there,’ Emily rushed out before hanging up.
Hanna pulled the phone away from her ear, still frowning.
“What’s wrong?” [Y/N] asked, becoming alert.
“I’m not sure,” Hanna shook her head.
“Do you think A sent them messages too?” [Y/N] questioned, a little worried.
“Crap, I didn’t even think about that,” Hanna replied, her lips pressed in a thin line. “But, whatever it is, we’ll handle it.”
She gave [Y/N] an encouraging smile and the latter nodded. The two didn’t have to wait for too long; the door opened with Aria, Emily, and Spencer rushing in.
“There you two are,” Spencer said.
“Is everything okay?” [Y/N] asked in response. Aria, Emily and Spencer’s expressions did not give her a good feeling.
“No, we need to talk about Jason,” Spencer said, without beating around the bush.
[Y/N] and Hanna exchanged concerned glances.
“[y/n/n], Jason had pictures of you,” Emily revealed, shocking [Y/N] and Hanna.
“Creepy pictures,” Aria added, shuddering at the memory of breaking into Jason’s shed with Spencer and Emily.
“What?” [Y/N] whispered, stunned.
“We found a darkroom in his shed,” Spencer said, looking at Emily and Aria once, who nodded along. “We found photos of you there. Photos of you sleeping.”
“Sleeping?” [Y/N] gasped.
“What the hell?” Hanna muttered to herself, standing next to [Y/N].
“Sleeping or drugged?” Spencer pressed.
“How is that possible?” [Y/N] asked, still stunned. “I’ve never been alone with Jason before.”
She was terrified by what she just heard. She didn’t understand how Jason had pictures of her. Especially creepy pictures as her friends had put it. She wondered if Spencer was right about him all along and she had been blind due to her feelings for him. The thought, itself, hurt very much.
Hanna silently wrapped an arm around [Y/N]’s shoulder to comfort the latter. Just like [Y/N], Hanna didn’t know how to process this information about Jason either. She believed what Aria, Emily and Spencer were saying, and she felt terrible for [Y/N].
“I never bought Jason’s whole act,” Spencer scoffed. “I mean, hanging around here at school, pretending to be concerned about at-risk youth.”
“Spence,” Hanna almost hissed at the brunette, gesturing towards a distressed [Y/N].
“[y/n/n], look…” Spencer sighed. Before she could say more, her phone chimed along with Emily and Aria’s.
[Y/N] and Hanna knew even before their friends checked their phones. Hanna mentally cursed out A while [Y/N] remained indifferent. She didn’t care if her friends found out about her and Jason. She was still trying to digest what her friends had discovered about Jason.
Aria, Emily and Spencer gasped out loud after viewing the message from A. [Y/N] looked at the three girls as they processed the text message.
“Oh my god,” Spencer muttered.
“[y/n/n], no,” Emily looked at her, disappointed.
“[y/n/n], is that you and Jason?” Aria still asked, holding her phone screen towards the girl in question.
A had sent them the same picture that they had sent Hanna, but with a different text:
‘Best friend’s brother? How cliche.’
“It is,” [Y/N] nodded, bracing herself for the hard questions that were definitely coming up.
“You never told us that… you liked him,” Aria said slowly.
“It never came up,” [Y/N] replied with a small shrug. She could feel a headache forming and the school day hadn’t even started. Besides, her mind was still stuck on the fact that Jason had pictures of her. Creepy pictures of her.
“[y/n/n], he’s older than you,” Emily commented, clearly disappointed in her friend.
“I know that, Em” [Y/N] sighed, starting to get a little overwhelmed.
“And, he’s dangerous!” Spencer added, her arms crossed across her chest. “Out of all the guys in this town, him, [y/n/n]? Really?”
“I can’t help who I fall for, Spencer,” [Y/N] said back.
“If A hadn’t texted, would you have told us about you and Jason?” Spencer demanded.
“I don’t know, okay?” [Y/N] said, her voice rising a little.
On one hand, she was anxious about what her friends found out about Jason. And, on the other, she was a little disappointed with the way Aria, Emily and Spencer were questioning her. They had all made questionable choices when it came to relationships, but she had never judged them the way they were doing to her now.
“You know what, back off,” Hanna snapped, breaking her silence.
“What?” Spencer stuttered, looking at Hanna.
“All three of you need to back off,” Hanna repeated.
“Han, no, stop,” [Y/N] said, holding the blonde’s hand.
“No, I won’t,” Hanna said back. “[y/n/n], you don’t have to be so nice and- and understanding all the time, alright? All of us here? We’ve all made bad choices when it comes to relationships. So, don’t just stand there and let them talk to you like that!”
Aria looked away, a little embarrassed and Emily cleared her throat in discomfort. Spencer stared at Hanna in disbelief.
“I hear you,” [Y/N] said softly, looking at Hanna. “I’m gonna go. I need some air.”
“[y/n/n], wait,” Hanna said as [Y/N] pulled away from her, but the latter shook her head.
“I’ll be okay,” she gave a small smile to Hanna and walked out of the classroom without saying anything to the other three friends.
“You three are unbelievable,” Hanna scoffed once [Y/N] was out of her sight. “We’ve all kept secrets from each other, especially with relationships.”
She pointedly looked at Aria, who had a hard time looking up from the ground.
“Hanna, none of us dated someone connected to a murder weapon!” Spencer argued.
“Do you even hear yourself?” Hanna asked in disbelief. “It wasn’t even that long ago when you were accusing Toby of killing Ali! Now, you’re dating him. And, Em? Remember who stood by your side when you defended Toby?”
Emily had to drop her gaze to the ground, feeling a little guilty. When Aria, Spencer and Hanna were upset with her about befriending Toby, [Y/N] stood up for her, trusting her friend’s instincts.
“Hanna,” Spencer said, letting out a heavy breath. “We love [y/n/n] too, okay? We’re trying to keep her safe.”
“I want her safe too,” Hanna replied. “But, if any one of us were in her spot right now, she would never talk to us or treat us the way you three did. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go find [y/n/n] and make sure she’s okay. Don’t bother following. I mean it.”
Hanna stormed out of the room and Spencer threw her head back in frustration. Aria and Emily looked at each other, wondering the same thing; if they should’ve taken a different approach in talking to [Y/N] instead of following Spencer’s lead.
…
[Y/N] made her way towards Jason’s office, a little lost but determined. When she reached her destination, she saw Jason outside his office, chatting with a student. It didn’t take long for Jason to notice her presence and she didn’t miss the way his eyes lit up. She gulped and waited patiently for him to finish his conversation. He wrapped up soon and the student walked away. Jason turned to her with a smile, but it dropped when he noticed the blank expression on her face as she walked closer to him. It was very unlike her.
“Hey, are you okay?” he asked in concern, meeting her halfway.
“Can we talk?” she asked, her voice low.
“Sure,” he replied, suddenly on alert and led her inside his office.
“Why do you have pictures of me?” she asked the moment he shut the door and turned to face her.
“What?” he asked, blinking, taken aback by her question.
“My friends said they found pictures of me in your shed,” she replied, trying her best to maintain her composure. “Pictures of me sleeping. How did you even take them? And, when did you take them?”
“Hold up,” he paused, holding a finger up. “Your friends are the ones who broke into my shed?”
“Yes,” she replied, not letting his anger affect her. “But, the point is they found the photos. Photos that you didn’t want found.”
“Man, I swear this town never changes,” he chuckled bitterly. “People would rather sneak behind your back than ask a direct question.”
“I’m asking you a direct question now,” [Y/N] said, taking a step forward. “Why did you take my pictures? And, when?”
“I didn’t,” he said, his intense eyes piercing into her troubled ones. “Ali did.”
“Ali?” she asked, baffled. “Why would Ali take pictures of me sleeping?”
“I don’t know what goes on at slumber parties,” he replied. “I found a roll of her film with her things, so I developed it.”
“My friends said the pictures were missing when they went back,” [Y/N] said, still astonished.
“The equipment is expensive, so I moved them into the house until I could get a new lock,” he answered patiently. “And, the prints were gone, because I was having them framed. As a gift for you.”
“Oh,” she whispered, her gaze lowering to the floor. She felt troubled; she didn’t know how to react to any of this.
“So,” he cleared his throat, making her look up at him. “Anything else you’d like to accuse me of?”
Her eyes dropped from his again and he felt guilty. Before either of them could say more, the door opened and Hanna walked in.
“Is everything okay?” she asked cautiously. Though from the looks on both [Y/N] and Jason’s faces, she could tell things were not okay.
“Yes, we’re done here,” he said, giving one last look to [Y/N] before walking out of the room.
“[y/n/n],” Hanna whispered, walking towards [Y/N]. Without a word, [Y/N] hugged Hanna tight and shut her eyes, a few tears slipping down her cheeks. Hanna hugged her back. “It’s gonna be okay.”
[Y/N] nodded and pulled back a few moments later. “I’m gonna go. I can’t be here right now.”
“Okay, I’ll come with you,” Hanna nodded, but [Y/N] shook her head.
“No, no, you don’t have to,” she replied. “I’ll be okay.”
“Are you sure?” Hanna asked reluctantly. She didn’t want to leave [Y/N], but she would give her the space she wanted.
“Yes, I won’t do anything stupid,” [Y/N] tried to joke despite her watery eyes.
Hanna’s heart broke for her friend, but she relented. She gave one last hug to [Y/N] before the latter left.
…
Instead of going home, [Y/N] went to the Grille. Since it was a weekday, it wasn’t too crowded. She tucked herself in a corner booth, processing everything that happened. She didn’t know for how long she sat there when her phone pinged. Her breath hitched when she saw that Jason had texted her.
‘Hi, I’m sorry. Can we talk? Please?’
She stared at the text for a few seconds before replying to him.
‘Hi, sure. I’m at the Grille.’
‘Thank you, see you soon.’
She didn’t reply to him this time and placed her cellphone face down on the table. A little while later, Jason stood next to her table with a paperbag in one hand.
“Hey,” he whispered, looking nervous.
“Hey,” she gave a small smile.
“Are you still upset with me?” he asked.
“No,” she shook her head. “No, I'm not upset.”
“Do you mind if I sit down?” he asked.
“No, go ahead,” she replied and he slid into the seat opposite of hers.
“These are for you,” he said, pulling out the pictures from the bag and placing them on the table.
[Y/N] gathered the frames closer and looked over them one by one.
“These are beautiful,” she said, observing the ‘normal’ pictures. But, she frowned looking at the pictures where she was asleep. “These are kinda creepy.”
Jason laughed softly and she looked at him.
“They’re yours,” he said. “You can do whatever you want with them.”
“I don’t think I remember Ali being into photography,” she remarked. “It’s strange. I feel like I’m still learning things about her even after she’s gone.”
Jason nodded, looking thoughtful.
“I’m sorry about my friends breaking into your shed,” she said a few seconds later. “It’s not an excuse, but they- well, we’ve all been through a lot this year. We don’t know who to trust.”
“I’m sorry too,” he apologized, confusing her.
“For what?”
“For talking to you the way I did at school,” he explained.
“It’s alright,” she shrugged. “What my friends did was wrong too, I agree.”
“I guess, we’re all looking for answers,” he commented. “That’s how I found this roll of film. I was renovating Ali’s bedroom. I pulled up a floorboard and found a box of her stuff.”
“I wonder why she hid it,” she said.
“I think hiding things became a second nature for her,” said Jason. “I don’t think she even knew she was doing it half of the time.”
“What else was in the box?” she asked, curious.
“I don’t know. Girl stuff?” he shrugged, causing her to chuckle. “You can take a look at the box if you want. It’s back at the house.”
[Y/N] stared at him, unable to reply.
“You’re not still scared of me, are you?” he asked, trying to joke. But, he desperately hoped she wasn’t.
“I’m not scared of you,” she replied back. Again, she didn’t know if she was being naive, following her heart and believing Jason’s words. But, it felt right.
summary: The reader comes face to face with the demon version of her boyfriend.
warnings/tags: angst, demon dean being a jerk.
———
[Y/N] sat at the edge of her seat in the library. Her arms were wrapped around herself as she subconsciously rocked herself back and forth. She was alone in the bunker with the demon version of her boyfriend locked in the dungeon. Just as he promised her, Sam had managed to locate his brother and bring him back to the bunker.
[Y/N] hadn’t seen Dean yet, though she desperately wanted to. Sam had almost begged her to stay out of Dean’s sights until the latter could be cured. [Y/N] understood that Dean was not himself at this time and Sam was worried his brother might say something to hurt her.
Currently, Sam was out to get purified blood. Before he left, he had once again reminded her to not visit Dean. She knew that Sam was only looking out for her and didn’t want her to get her feelings hurt by Demon Dean. So, she had agreed to Sam’s request.
Now, as she waited for Sam to come back, she felt her patience being tested. She wanted to see Dean desperately. It had been so long since she had seen him and she missed him very much. She wanted to see him with her own eyes and make sure he was okay; physically, at least. However, Sam’s request hung over her head and she felt stuck.
Some time passed and Sam hadn’t returned yet. [Y/N] stood up from her chair, giving into her heart’s wishes to see Dean. The same heart thudded behind her ribcage in anticipation as she slowly made her way towards the dungeon.
Soon, she stood in front of the heavy, steel door and felt her heart rate increase. She shuddered out a breath and closed her eyes, placing her palm over her chest in an attempt to calm herself. She breathed out heavily one more time and bit her bottom lip in anticipation. She slowly pushed open the door and stepped inside the storage only to pause in her spot with a gasp.
The love of her life was right in front of her after a long time. The sight of him tied to a chair in the middle of a Devil’s trap broke her heart. He was dressed just like her Dean; a maroon button down shirt over a black t-shirt with dark jeans and boots. His dark blond hair had gotten a little longer and he had a very light stubble covering his jaw. When her eyes met his, she felt her breath hitch. The bright green eyes that she adored stared back at her with no emotion in them.
“Dean,” she finally whispered, her voice coming out broken. She took some more cautious steps inside, stopping at the edge of the trap.
He suddenly grinned at her and she felt her throat constrict. His smile wasn’t playful and sweet like she was used to; instead, it felt mocking and there was something sinister in the gesture.
“Look who it is,” he drawled out, his eyes scanning her form up and down.
“Are- are you alright?” she asked quietly.
“What do you think?” he suddenly snapped, causing her to startle. He glared at her now with his jaw clenched and she looked down, fiddling with her fingers.
She heard him chuckle a moment later and looked up at him again.
“Look at you,” he said, still laughing under his breath. “I can’t believe you’re a hunter.”
“W- what do you mean?” she stuttered, frowning.
“I said I can’t believe you’re a hunter,” he repeated with a cruel smile, a challenging look in his eyes. “You can’t look at me directly and you’re literally trembling when I’m the one tied up here.”
“This is different,” she tried to defend herself. “You’re not some random monster. You’re my Dean and it hurts to see you like this.”
“Yeah, sure,” he rolled his eyes. “So damn soft, emotional, and naive. You’re just a little girl trying to play a big bad hunter, [Y/N].”
The way he spat her name along with his words made her lips part in shock.
“I agree that I’m emotional,” she said back, pushing down her hurt. “But, I know that I’m a good hunter, Dean. I’ve always had your back and Sam’s!”
“Uh-huh, sure,” he laughed again as if her words were a joke to him. “Whatever helps you sleep at night, sweetheart.”
Her bottom lip wobbled and she bit down on it. She didn’t want him to see how his words were affecting her. However, her Dean was good at reading her and so was the demon one in front of her.
“Aww,” he cooed with a mock pout. “Did I hurt your feelings?”
She blinked back her tears and crossed her arms across her chest to keep herself together in front of him.
“Why am I even talking to you?” she scoffed. “You’re not even my Dean.”
“Oh, I’m the same Dean, alright,” he replied and her eyes widened when his eyes turned pitch black with his next words. “Just not yours anymore.”
She found herself frozen at the sight of his new eyes. Her [y/e/c] orbs clashed with his dark ones and that was the moment Sam rushed in.
“[y/n/n]!” he called, stopping next to her and wrapping his arm around her shoulder.
She turned to look at him with glazed eyes and Sam felt his heart break for her. He had come back to the bunker a few minutes ago and he had looked for her in the library. When she wasn’t there, he checked the room she shared with Dean and it was empty. Then, he knew where she must be and hurried to reach her before Dean did any damage.
Looking at her state now, he had a feeling he was a little late. Initially, he was a little upset with her for not listening to him in staying away from Dean for the time being. But, he understood where she was coming from. He knew how much she loved his brother and it was natural for her to want to see him when he was under the same roof as her.
He looked at Dean and the latter no longer had his dark eyes. Instead, he had a smug smirk as he observed the two.
“You two are precious,” he mocked and Sam pressed his lips in a thin line, irritated.
“Come on,” Sam told [Y/N] and gently turned her around to walk with him out of the storage as Dean chuckled darkly in the background.
“Are you okay?” Sam asked in worry. He and [Y/N] now stood in the middle of the hallway, several feet away from the storage.
[Y/N] didn’t reply right away. She looked at the ground with her arms wrapped around herself.
“[y/n/n]?” Sam called softly, touching her forearm, and she finally looked up at him, blinking back her tears.
“I’m okay,” she replied quietly, nodding.
“Please don’t take whatever he said to your heart,” Sam requested, his eyes pleading. “That’s not our Dean. You know that, right?”
[Y/N] was briefly lost in her thoughts before she exhaled heavily, nodding at Sam. The younger Winchester gave a small smile and squeezed her shoulder comfortingly before walking back to the dungeon.
…
The bunker was bathed in red with the emergency lights turned on.
“He got out!,” Sam had rushed out a short while ago. “[y/n/n], please stay in your room. He’s dangerous. Please!”
Before she could reply, Sam was gone.
If she was being honest with herself, she was definitely scared. The demon version of Dean was vile and dangerous. And, now, he was free in the bunker. He could hurt her or Sam.
As the clock ticked by, she paced back and forth in her room. Her heart raced and her mind buzzed with thoughts. She could faintly hear Dean’s voice, tauntingly calling for her and Sam. She gulped before suddenly pausing in her steps.
With a new found determination, she braced herself with the angel blade gripped tightly in her hand. Just as she made a move to exit the room, the door swung open. Her lips parted and her eyes widened as Dean stood in the doorway with a sledgehammer in his hand.
“There you are, sweetheart,” he grinned widely but the gesture only made her anxious. The smile, his maroon shirt, longer hair, and the red lights from the hallway only made him appear dangerous. He wasn’t their Dean at that moment. He was a demon, the Knight of Hell.
“Did you miss me?” he asked, slowly stepping inside the room.
She was quick to hold the blade in front of her, glaring at him.
“Don’t come closer,” she said, hardening her voice to the best of her ability.
Her words and tone made him pause before he smiled again in amusement.
“You’re cute, you know that?” he asked, resuming his steps towards her.
Subconsciously, she took some steps back before willing herself to stay. Dean looked at her with rather impressed eyes and kept walking closer to her. He only stopped when the sharp edge of her angel blade met the skin of his neck. [Y/N] gripped the blade tight, hoping he didn’t see the slight tremble of her hand. She knew he was dangerous, but she didn’t want to accidentally hurt him.
“What now?” he asked.
“How about I walk you back to the dungeon so that Sam could finish curing you?” she asked back rather sarcastically.
“Eh, pass,” he shrugged. “Like I told Sammy, I personally like this disease.”
He flashed his black eyes and her breath hitched as she pressed the blade a little tighter against his skin on instinct. His eyes returned to their normal shade as he glanced down at the weapon pressed on his neck.
“You know it’ll only take me a moment to take your little weapon away,” he commented.
“Do it, then,” she challenged, hoping Sam or Castiel would arrive soon. She knew she couldn’t take Dean back to the dungeon by herself.
His free hand came up to grip her wrist and she tried her very best to remain calm. His hold on her hand wasn’t too tight. Instead, his thumb gently rubbed over her pulse point.
“I missed you, you know,” he said, surprising her, and her calm demeanor slipped. She stared back and forth between his eyes. She wondered if he was being truthful or if he was playing games with her.
“Then, why didn’t you come back to me?” she couldn’t help but ask, and he didn’t miss the longing in her gaze.
“I decided I didn’t wanna be tied down anymore,” he shrugged with a cruel smile. “It was fun… moving from town to town, no strings attached.”
Hurt flashed through her eyes at what his words insinuated and she gulped the pain down. However, that brief moment was enough for him to take the angel blade from her clutch and toss it on the ground. It happened in the blink of an eye and he had her pinned to the wall with the hammer pressed against her neck, causing her to look up at him with fear clouding her eyes. In her panicked state, she didn’t notice that he barely applied any pressure on her with his weapon. It was simply a means to keep her in his hold.
“None of them were you, though,” he continued, his eyes now moving between hers with almost fascination. “None of them made me feel like you did.”
“Why are you telling me this?” she whispered, keeping her fear at bay.
“Maybe I should take you with me,” he remarked, instead of replying to her.
“What do you mean?” she asked, starting to struggle in his hold.
“I should take you with me,” he repeated with a wide smirk, tightening his grip on her. “It’s pretty self-explanatory, baby.”
“No, no,” she shook her head, breathing heavily. “I’m not coming with you!”
“Oh, yes, you are,” he replied. His smile faded and he looked at her with dangerous fascination, cupping her jaw with one hand. “We’ll get you new eyes, like mine, turn off your pesky emotions. You’ll love it just like I do.”
She kept shaking her head in denial and pushed at his chest with both of her hands, but with no success. As if the universe was on her side for once, she didn’t have to struggle more and Dean’s weight moved away from her.
“Stop it, Dean!” Castiel said, pulling Dean away from her with Sam’s help. “It’s over!”
Somewhere in the shuffle, the hammer fell from Dean’s grip, landing inches from her foot. Even as a demon, Dean’s strength was nothing compared to Castiel’s and the sound that left his mouth was almost monstrous as the angel dragged him out of the room. Sam paused, torn between comforting [Y/N] and following Castiel.
“Go, Sam,” [Y/N] whispered, holding a hand over heart. “Go, I’m okay.”
“I promise you it’ll be over soon,” he stepped closer to her and pressed a kiss to her head. “We’ll get Dean back, I swear.”
“I know,” she nodded, trying to smile.
Sam nodded back at her and rushed after Castiel.
Exhausted, [Y/N] slid down the wall and sat on the ground, hugging her legs close to her chest. She pressed her forehead against her knees and hoped that Sam was right.

A/N: this chapter was a little difficult to write. I don’t remember writing something so intense or violent previously. I kind of went with the flow and I do like the way this part turned out though.. i hope you guys like it too :)

Hi, yes! I took a mini break from writing but I’m hoping to get back into it soon. And, I know what you mean 🥺 Jason fics are pretty rare sadly. I’ll try my best to update the next parts soon ☺️
synopsis ٠࣪⭑ you were captured by a Djinn and now you’re mourning a life that wasn’t real
contents ٠࣪⭑ Dean Winchester x reader (f), non-explicit, age gap implied cause why not?? innocent/shy!reader implied, mentions having curly hair (can totally be ignored, it was entirely self-indulgent), soft angst, unrequited love (but it’s actually not), yearning!dean, 3.8k word count
notes ٠࣪⭑ This is my first ever fic, please be kind (constructive feedback welcome). I actually had a lot of fun writing this, it was just for myself but I liked it so much that I decided to share it! Also sorry if the lores not right, I haven’t watched the Djinn eps in a min and I was too lazy to confirm every detail
It was days after the Djinn case. The one that had Dean scouring some nowhere town like a madman looking for you, his chest twisting with guilt, the fact you were taken right under his nose settles like an incurable chill in his bones. But it was possibly worse seeing you there, hanging by tied up wrists, body limp and frail, the tube of the blood bag sticking out of your arm like you’re some monster's prepped and ready buffet.
Sure, you were alive and he didn’t have to wonder anymore, but the sight didn’t serve as much of a relief.
Dean cradled your bruised frame so gently in his arms, despite the rage and worry clinging to his insides, as he and Sam took you down. Murmured apologies leaving his lips as he carried you back to the impala, not caring if his little brother or your half out-of-it self can hear him, all he cares about right now is you.
The days following were quiet, you’d tried to bounce back, really tried— but the illusive life promised to you by the Djinn, plagued every thought and every moment of every day.
You could still feel the comfortable weight of the ring on your finger, the feeling of Dean’s rough hands gently caressing your soft skin, you could still hear the sounds of peace and cicadas becoming the soundtrack to your life, only being interrupted by the sweet giggles and babbling of your baby. A baby girl, named Layla Mary Winchester, Dean didn’t even have to convince you to name your first child after an old rock song, you loved it the second he suggested it.
She was all Dean, from the green hue of her eyes, to the freckles on her nose, the plump and pink little lips that could make any grown woman jealous, and the devious little smirk they wore, but the hair, that was all you— her ringlets almost so perfect it’s as if God hand curled them around His own finger. You could see how Dean's face went all soft whenever he touched her hair, so reverently, his mind no doubt going back to the first time he ran his hand through your curls.
You could still remember bath times and teaching Dean how to do pig tails after he failed horribly the first time. You can still smell the home cooked meals mixed with the strong scent of motor oil and that sweet sweat that clung to Dean's skin after working on the car all afternoon, under the warm sun. You’d gotten used to telling him to wash his hands before picking up Layla or trying to steal a bite of whatever was on the stove.
Layla clung to him anyway, that was probably what you missed most. The way Dean had looked at this little version of the both of you with so much love, the way he was always so gentle with her but also teaching her to be tough without dismissing that softness that came from her mother, he’d held her when she cried and contorted his features into the stupidest faces just to hear her laugh.
Stop it, you had to remind yourself, because none of it was real.
Dean wasn’t yours, you didn’t have a cozy little house in a rural area, there was no dancing to oldies on Sunday mornings, no bedtime stories or nap time cuddles, there were no rings or kisses or home cooked meals. It was just another cruel form of torture in your horror-filled lives, one a monster cooked up just for you.
You hate to even think it, but you almost wished Sam and Dean had never found you… just so you could stay in that perfect little dream world, just a little longer.
The boys didn’t know what to do because you wouldn’t tell them, you’d barely said anything other than “sorry”s and “I’m fine” since they found you.
There was no way you could look Dean in his face and tell him that the Djinn looked in your head and found that your dream world consisted of being his wife and the mother of his non-existent daughter, with no monsters and no blood and no hunting.
Not when he didn’t see you that way, not when you were exactly what he didn’t want— a non-confrontational, soft, criminally un-sexy, doesn’t drink or smoke or sleep around, wants something real, girl— to admit that would be a suicide mission.
Sam might understand if you told him. He sees the way you look at his brother, the way you laugh at Deans jokes even if they’re not funny, he catches the way your face heats when Dean calls you “sweetheart” and every excuse you make just to stand or sit a little closer to him. He also sees the wrecked look on your face when Dean leaves with random women, no matter how hard you try to mask it, Sam sees the way you go quiet when a pretty girl slides a hand down Dean's leather-clad bicep, the way you laugh it off when he calls you “kid” as if the word doesn’t feel like a punch straight to your chest. But just because Sam is an observant know-it-all doesn’t mean you are going to tell him about this little dream life you’re mourning.
“Go talk to her” Dean whisper yelled at his brother, the two watching you from across the diner, you still haven’t opened up about anything involving the djinn case.
You’ve been stepping back during hunts, never talking his ear off with your excited rants anymore, and he swears he’s seen more fake smiles on your face in the past week than he’s seen your real smiles the entire time he’s known you.
He’s sick of it— he’s sick of not seeing you light up over little coffee shops or stray alley cats, he’s sick of not hearing your voice quietly singing along to the radio then acting like you weren’t when he caught you, he’s sick of you avoiding his gaze, of ignoring him almost completely. It’s even worse that you’re not cold about it, you’re just… pulling back. He hates how much it affects him.
“Why do I have to talk to her?” Sam whispered back, tearing his eyes away from where you were sitting at the booth across the diner, looking at the raindrops fall down the windows, your untouched coffee going cold in front of you.
“Because—“ Dean started, fighting the urge to pull the older brother card and just say cause I said so.
“Aren’t you like best friends or something?” He decided on instead, crossing his arms over his chest like a child.
“Just because we’re friends doesn’t make it okay for me to say ‘hey you’ve been acting weird since you were kidnapped and slowly dying the other week, everything alright?’” Dean's face fell a little, just a microscopic change in his expression at the reminder of what happened, but he brushed it off.
“that’s not what I meant and you know it” He added, less humor laced in his voice now. Sam sighed, knowing Deans also just worried, it’s just so unlike you to not talk about something. To not even tell Sam anything that’d happened.
You had just gotten out of the shower, pajamas laying on your damp, freshly lotioned skin, your body going through the motions of your somewhat of a night routine, as if you hadn’t just cried under the warm spray at the thought of you never kissing your daughter goodnight again and never falling asleep in Dean’s arms like you had every night in your dream world.
You almost made it to your bed before Dean cornered you, making you look up at him because of his sudden change in proximity.
“What’s going on sweetheart?” he murmured in that undeniably soft voice of his, your chest now clenching at the petname, rather than blushing like before.
“What do you mean?” You replied, voice quiet and thick, probably from the stifled sobs you let out just moments ago.
“Don’t— don’t do that, just talk to me” he said before you could even say anything else, his voice almost pleading, desperate even, but you shook the ridiculous thought away.
“Don’t do what, Dean? What do you want me to say?” You’re playing dumb, doing a good job at it too in your book, because you knew Dean didn’t really care enough to push much further.
“Anything— just say anything at this point, because it’s not like you to be like this… you’re not yourself” his voice came out just a tad firmer, and as if to prove his point you replied with “not myself?” You scoffed lightly.
“Well sorry it’s a little harder for me to go back to normal after what happened, not everyone gets the pleasure of being so resilient as you and Sam.” Your tone was defensive, the tone he only really heard during stupid arguments or research debates, but you never fought, especially not with him.
He was a little taken aback, mouth opening to argue a rebuttal but he bit his tongue— this definitely wasn’t like you, meaning something was up, and it’s not just him being overly protective again. So instead he brushed it off, didn’t take it personally.
“What happened?” He said your name so gently it made your chest twist with guilt already, you just shook your head.
“It’s nothing, I’m f—“ you started again, only to be cut off, “stop it— stop saying you’re fine, you’re not” your resolve started breaking. You turned your head away, throat burning and eyes stinging, all of the emotions you’ve been pushing down for days suddenly starting to bubble up with extra force.
“What do you want me to tell you, Dean?” You cracked, voice louder than before, words tumbling out before you could carefully curate them, “you want me to say I miss it? That I miss the made-up reality that was slowly killing me— you want to hear how I can’t stop thinking about it? You want me to tell you how I almost wish you guys never rescued me?” Your voice broke into a whisper at that, but you still refused to break down in front of him.
The look on his face was almost devastating, the way his confusion turned into shock, and the shock almost turned into sadness, or anger, or both? “You don’t mean that” his voice came out soft again, disbelieving.
“Yeah, well I do—“ you looked away from him, heart hammering under your chest, the burning your throat feeling now as if it was replaced with shards of broken glass. You don’t know how much longer you can hold everything back.
Dean went from disbelief to outrage in a matter of seconds, “what the hell did you have to say something like that—“
“You!” Your voice roared out before you could think about it, eyes burning with the tears you refused to let fall pooling in them, his face dropped but you continued before he even had a chance to blink “I had you, Dean! You were mine, and I was yours— and w-we had this little house in a little town, and the most perfect little girl—“ you’re voice fully gave out at that point, but you were too far gone to stop now. “No monsters, no motels, just us and our stupid little family—“ you choked on your own sobs, your hands going up to cover your mouth as if you were trying to save the shred of dignity you had left.
Dean hasn’t said anything, hasn’t moved, hell— you don’t even know if he’s breathed yet. Here you are, spilling your guts in front of him, the ones you tried so desperately to keep securely in place forever, and he’s just standing there.
“I’m s-sorry—“ you choked in another sob, unable to stop despite the embarrassment clawing at your skin, “I’m sorry— just g-go… please” you pleaded pitifully. That made him move, you closed your eyes, preparing for the sound of the slamming door, but it never came.
Instead, you were surrounded by a firm pressure, with the warmth that can only come from another body, Dean’s unique scent— the musky sweet bergamot and leather smell that you’ve become addicted to— engulfed you, the feeling of his strong arms wrapped around you finally registered in your scrambled brain.
He was hugging you, no not just hugging, he was holding you… in a way he never has before, in a way that you always secretly wished he would. You didn’t know what to do but your body reacted anyway, melting into his touch like this was normal, the moment only pulling more soft sobs out of you.
“Breathe, sweetheart” he murmured into your hair, his voice uncharacteristically vulnerable but still held that gentle authoritative tone of his. Eventually your breaths slowed, listening to him despite everything, your lungs burning and your brain screaming at you, yet you couldn’t find it in you to care. Especially when you’d registered his rough hand moving up and down your arm, the other tangled in your hair holding your head to his chest.
Another moment of silence passed before you tried to speak, “m’sorry—“ you murmured but he just shushed you, “what did I tell you about apologizing too damn much?” He murmurs, but his tone lacks the humor that statement usually holds, instead it’s still so gentle for him, like pouring honey over rough gravel.
You fought the urge to reply with an apology, instead opting for silence, but only for a moment longer.
Your head throbbed and your throat ached yet you continued, “why are you doing this?…” your voice so small and quiet, Dean's chest ached.
He hated that this was so foreign to you, hated that you felt like you had to apologize when you’d done nothing wrong, and he hated that you’ve been hurting and keeping it all in.
“Cause I want to, sweetheart” is all he could come up with, his own voice wavering just a little with emotion.
“Y-you’re not mad?…” you continue, even quieter than before.
His heart couldn’t take it, “why would I be mad?” He said, trying to still sound gentle despite the guilt crawling up his throat. Guilt for every moment he was ever a part of that made you think he’d be mad at you for something like this.
“Because I just blew everything up…” you breathed out, trying not to well up with tears all over again, you wanted to move away but you selfishly didn’t want this to end, either. You didn’t want to look him in the eyes, you didn’t want to escape his warmth, you didn’t want the moment to end, because you were already preparing how you were going to have to walk away from this, from them, from this little friendship that provided the only solace in your life.
You knew it was the beginning of the end; Dean didn’t see you that way, it would be endlessly awkward if things stayed the same, he wouldn’t be able to help you, and you’d rather walk away that make him feel obligated or guilty to try and fix things when you’re the one that fell for him, even if it feels like ripping a vital organ from your own body.
Dean didn’t know what to say, he wasn’t good at this, never has been. He feels things deeply but he’s never been allowed to express them, or share them, or talk about them, or let others share too. So he just keeps holding you, because he wants to get it right. He wants to comfort you, he wants to hear you say what you feel about him, he wants to try and tell you what he feels for you.
He’s been holding it in for months, maybe even longer, and it’s been fine. Sure, he always took a good look at you when you weren’t paying attention, and he’d make stupid jokes just to hear your laugh, or how he’d put on songs he knew you liked just to hear you quietly sing along. Sure, maybe he felt guilty for letting his eyes fall to your sparkling glossy lips and wonder what it’d be like to just kiss you. Even if he just got to do it once, it’d be enough (it probably wouldn’t be but he’d risk it anyway). But you were a little younger, less experienced, such a sweet ray of sunshine, and oh so shy, but secretly a total badass— none of that made him want you less, but it did make him want to be careful. He didn’t just want you the way he’s had other girls, he knew you didn’t deserve that, you deserved so much more than he could give you, and he’d never forgive himself if he was the one to muck you up. So, he still picked up random girls, still flirted, still kept the no-strings-attached bad boy hunter façade alive and well. You were a risk too important to take, even for the thrill-seeker he is.
But now? He knew he couldn’t keep it all in, not when you were saying things like this, not when you had tears covering your cheeks and apologies on your tongue, he couldn’t let you keep thinking this was one-sided, he couldn’t let you think you had to walk away all because you’d admitted things he’d been too chicken to say himself.
“You didn’t ruin anything” he murmured after a moment, snapping himself out of his own thoughts. Your head was still cradled to his chest, he adjusted his grip to hold you just a little closer.
You could feel the tears prickling in your eyes just at his touch, instinctively melting more into him, even if your brain calls you idiotic for doing so. Before you could retort with how he’s wrong and how your relationship has changed forever and apologize for having feelings, he’d pulled back just enough to look at you.
“Tell me about it…”
You were taken aback, your eyes puffy and your heart thumping so loud you’re sure the people in the next room could hear it. You stayed quiet for a moment, processing if you’d heard him right, but the look on his face was so earnest he didn’t need to confirm with words.
So you told him— all about it. The rings, the giggles, the house, the gorgeous kitchen, the little girl that permanently etched herself into your heart even though she doesn’t exist. You talked about the way you’d danced to music in the kitchen after bedtime and how you’d bring him sweet tea while he worked on the car, you talked about how much Layla was like him and how you adored her for it. You could’ve sworn you saw a glimmer in his eye at that.
You were soft and emotional but passionate, he’d had to tell you to keep going a couple times when you got flustered, and he’d wipe his thumb under your eye when a tear would escape. He never called you stupid or reminded you that it wasn’t real or shamed you. He just listened.
“Do you know how wrecked I was when we found you?” Dean had whispered a while later, after you ran out of things to tell him, after you’d moved to sit together, after you finally accepted he wasn’t upset with you.
You swear you could see him get a little flustered, but you were more interested by his words.
Before you could ask him what he meant, he continued, “you uh…” he looked down before meeting your eyes again, “it didn’t look good… I thought-“ he didn’t say it, instead scrubbing a hand over his stubble, but you knew what he meant.
“What I’m trying to say is—“ he paused again, just trying to find the right words even though he’s terrified. He looked in your eyes, “I don’t want you to think that this is all just one sided…” he looked so shy you almost didn’t recognize him in the moment. But his words still stopped you in your tracks.
“What do you mean?…” you asked carefully, voice barely audible, pulse accelerating within seconds. He tentatively reached over and took your hands in his, they were tough and warm and yours fit perfectly in them. You swear you almost choked on your own breath.
“I’ve uh… I’ve been trying to push it down for a while now…” his eyes flicked to yours again, and you could’ve sworn they landed on your lips for a split second, “I didn’t want to be the one to uh, mess you up I guess.”
Your brows furrowed a little at his words, unable to take your eyes off his face, giving his hand a mindless little squeeze to urge him on, or to comfort him, you don’t really know. “You’re scarin’ me” you murmured with a little nervous laugh that fell flat.
He couldn’t help the way his heart fluttered even at that, he was more far gone than he admitted to himself. One of his hands left yours, tucking a loose curl behind your ear, his thumb gently grazing your tear-stained cheek. Your breath hitching, heart beating impossibly faster.
“You don’t need to be in a dream world for me to want you” he finally admitted, voice so stupidly soft but so sincere.
Before you could pass out he continued, “now I can’t promise you a kid” that pulled an amused and shocked little chuckle out of you, “but I do know that these feelings scare the crap outta me, and I can’t let you sit here and continue to beat yourself up for this, like I don’t feel the same.”
Dead. You’re pretty sure you are— is this another djinn? Is this real, you genuinely don’t know at this point. You’re pretty sure Dean knows you’re freaking out by the look on your face, so in an attempt to confirm everything he just said, his hand by your cheek moves to your jaw. Tilting your head up with his finger, just a little, giving you enough time to stop him, and then he just kisses you.
You’re still shocked for a moment, so still that he almost pulls away, but then you just melt, eyes shut, hands reaching up to clutch themselves into his shirt. It’s better than anything he’s dreamed up, and the same goes for you. Who knew just an innocent little kiss could be so blissful.
His thumb gently caressed where it rested on your chin, smiling into the kiss as his other hand made its way into your hair. It wasn’t rough, or quick— it was soft and full of feelings they’ve both buried for far too long, his lips are soft and he can taste the minty toothpaste on your breath. You both pulled away just enough to breathe, chests rising and falling in tandem.
“You believe me now?” He murmured with that little smirk of his. Your smile widened and before he could make another sarcastic remark you pulled him in for another kiss as an answer.

“Hey, did you have a nice time out?” Sam asked as [Y/N] entered the library after a night out with her friends.
“I- I did,” she smiled softly, clutching a paper bag in her hands. “Thank you for pushing me to go out.”
“Of course,” Sam replied, giving her his full attention from his seat. His laptop sat on the table in front of him with a bunch of news pages open. Next to the laptop were several lore books and notebooks. He looked exhausted, to say the least. “It’s your birthday. You deserve a break from… everything.”
[Y/N]’s smile dimmed a little. She had always loved celebrating her birthday from when she was young. But, this time, she felt the opposite. Celebration was the last thing on her mind after losing the love of her life. She didn’t know what was worse; Dean being murdered or him coming back to life as a demon. And, now, he was missing.
“I wish you came along too,” she told Sam, clearing her throat. “You could use a little break too.”
“I didn’t want to crash girls’ night,” the younger Winchester chuckled.
[Y/N] smiled, thinking of her best friends, who made the night special for her. It helped having friends, especially girl friends, who were in the hunting life and she didn’t have to hide anything from them. They were aware of what was happening with Dean and did their best to cheer her up for one night at least.
“I have a feeling you must’ve skipped dinner, so I brought some for you,” she said, stepping closer and placing the bag next to the books. “There’s some cake in there too.”
“Thanks, [y/n/n],” Sam replied softly, looking up at her, and she nodded in return.
Although [Y/N] had taken the time to dress up and had a smile on her face, he wasn’t oblivious to the sadness in her eyes. She was trying her best to look as if she was okay.
He exhaled heavily and got up from his chair to hug her. She hugged him back, gulping down the lump in her throat.
“Happy birthday, [y/n/n],” he said quietly against her hair.
“Thank you, Sammy,” she whispered and hugged him tight for a moment before pulling back.
“I will find Dean, [y/n/n],” he told her, a determined look in his eyes. “I promise you, I will.”
“I know, Sam,” she nodded with a tearful smile. “Can I help you with anything?”
“No, I’m okay,” he shook his head and sat in his chair again. “I’ll eat and do a little more research.”
“I don’t mind helping you,” she offered again.
“Tomorrow, okay?” he smiled at her. “For now, go get some rest.”
“Okay,” she nodded. “Good night, Sam. And, don’t forget to eat, okay?”
“Yes, mom,” he tried to joke and she playfully glared at him. “Good night, [y/n/n].”
With one last smile at him, [Y/N] walked out of the library and made her way towards her shared room with Dean.
…
[Y/N] shut the door after entering the bedroom and looked at the neatly made bed.
The memories of Dean and herself in the very same room played in front of her eyes; the two of them cuddling and watching movies on his laptop, Dean randomly tickling her without any mercy and making her laugh uncontrollably, laying in each others’ arms and chatting about anything and everything, making love and Dean cradling her head against his heart afterwards.
Without her control, tears ran down her cheeks and she quickly wiped them away, sniffling. She opened the messages on her cellphone, yearning for a message from the man she loved. But, there was nothing and it made her heart ache. She locked her phone and tossed it on the bed before going to the bathroom to get ready for bed.
She changed into some pajama shorts and a tank top. Then, she wore a flannel shirt of Dean’s and buttoned it up. She threw her hair into a high ponytail and stood in front of the mirror. She ran her hands over the material of the flannel shirt and wrapped her arms around herself, imagining that it was Dean hugging her.
A sad sigh left her lips and she walked over to the bed, getting under the covers. She didn’t want to sleep just yet. She sat with her back leaned against the headboard and grabbed her cellphone again.
She frowned when she noticed she had a missed call from an unknown caller. Before she could ponder more, her phone rang again, the screen flashing ‘unknown caller.’
“Hello?” she asked quietly, answering the call.
The person on the other end remained silent.
“Hello?” she asked again and there was still no reply.
[Y/N] briefly wondered if it was a spam call. Or if it was someone messing with her.
Suddenly, she heard the person on the other end exhale and her breath hitched. She abruptly sat up straight, her eyes pooling with tears.
“Dean?” she whispered.
The night seemed darker than usual. The sky was pitch black with no moon and no stars in sight. The cold wind washed over him as he stood in the parking lot of a bar. His fingers tightened around his cellphone when he heard her call his name.
“Dean, is that you?” she whispered again.
His face was a mask of calm. But, on the inside, hearing her voice after so long brought up a strange feeling.
[Y/N] shut her eyes, the action causing tears to roll down her cheeks. She knew who was on the other side of the call now. It was him, she knew.
“Dean, are you okay?” she asked, desperate to hear his voice.
She wiped her cheeks with her free hand and sniffled.
“Please be okay, Dean,” she said, trying to smile. “Please be safe.”
She gripped the comforter with her free hand, still wishing he would say something to her.
“I- I love you, Dean,” she said, her bottom lip trembling. “I love you so much. I hope you’ll come home soon. I- I miss you.”
His lips pressed tightly, his hold on his cellphone tightening further.
[Y/N] waited. Another few minutes went by and soon, the call got disconnected. She looked at her phone screen and a sob escaped her lips. She laid on her side and hugged Dean’s pillow as she silently cried herself to sleep.
…
‘I love you, Dean.’
‘I miss you.’
Her voice kept ringing in his ears and he closed his eyes tightly. He thought he had stopped feeling when he became a demon. However, hearing her voice brought back his memories with her. And, her memories brought a strange feeling to his gut. It was the exact same feeling he had when he decided to leave the bunker, leave her.
“Dean?” a voice called from behind, interrupting his thoughts.
With her voice still echoing in his mind, he turned to see the blonde waitress he had spent the previous night with.
“Crowley was looking for you,” she informed.
“I’ll be there,” he nodded shortly, distracted.
“But, he–”
“I said I’ll be there!” he almost growled out, causing her to jump in her spot.
“Okay,” she whispered, dejected, before walking back inside the bar.
Dean turned away from the bar again. He realized it was a mistake to call [Y/N]. The sound of her voice and the sadness in it troubled him. He felt caught between enjoying his new carefree life and going back to his previous life, where the girl who loved him was waiting for him.
In the end, he steeled his heart and made his way towards the bar, letting the demon in him take the lead.

~ flashback begins ~
“I see the way you look at him, [y/n/n],” Hanna said softly, causing her friend’s eyes to widen.
“W- what- who are you talking about, Han?” [Y/N] asked nervously.
“Jason, of course,” Hanna replied and there was no judgement in her eyes nor her tone.
[Y/N] opened her mouth and closed it, unable to come up with a reply.
“It’s okay, [y/n/n],” Hanna said, standing next to her friend and wrapping a comforting hand around her shoulder.
“Am I that obvious?” [Y/N] asked with a defeated smile.
“For me, yes,” Hanna answered. “Have the others asked you anything about this?”
“No,” [Y/N] shook her head.
“And… How about Ali?” Hanna asked hesitantly. “Do you think she knows?”
“God, no. I don’t think so,” [Y/N] sighed. “She would kill me.”
“Hey, it’s okay,” Hanna said kindly. “You can’t help who you have feelings for.”
“It’s just a crush, Hanna banana,” [Y/N] chuckled softly. “I’m sure I’ll get over it, get over him, soon.”
“[y/n/n], crush was last year when all you had was heart eyes for him,” teased Hanna, causing her friend to roll her eyes fondly. “Well, you still have heart eyes whenever he’s around. But, now, you look genuinely worried about him.”
“I- I don’t know,” [Y/N] shrugged. “I just… I feel bad for him. His addiction’s gotten worse since we met him, I feel. His family doesn’t seem to care about him and he doesn’t have the greatest set of friends either. I feel like he can do better with the right guidance. That’s all.”
“Do you think you can talk to him into getting help?” Hanna asked.
“Oh god no,” [Y/N] denied right away. “I don’t have the guts to go in front of him.”
“What, why not?” Hanna asked.
“There are so many things that can go wrong, Han,” [Y/N] replied. “One, Ali could find out and make the rest of my life miserable for even thinking of her brother. Two, Jason would probably laugh in my face if I went to have a heart to heart with him.”
Hanna smiled sadly and [Y/N] was quick to reassure her friend.
“Don’t worry about me too much, okay?” she smiled. “Like I said, it’s just a crush I’ll get over soon.”
“I’m right here if you need someone to talk to,” Hanna said back.
“Thanks, Han,” [Y/N] hugged the blonde. “I love you.”
“Love you more,” Hanna replied and tickled [Y/N] causing the latter to giggle as the two pulled back from the hug.
“Let’s go before Spencer marches in here looking for us,” [Y/N] said and Hanna agreed.
“Can you believe this?” CeCe Drake asked, exasperated.
In response, Alison DiLaurentis sat, speechless.
It was by coincidence that CeCe had stumbled upon [Y/N] and Hanna at a frat party Alison had snuck them into. Initially, she was going to ignore them. But, after hearing her boyfriend’s name in their conversation, she couldn’t walk away. Once she found out that one of Ali’s best friends was crushing on the latter’s big brother, CeCe recorded the conversation to show Ali.
“I don’t understand,” Ali replied, stunned while holding CeCe’s phone in her hands.
“What’s so hard to understand?” CeCe scoffed, taking her phone back from Alison. “One of your so-called best friends is clearing using you to get to your brother!”
“No,” Alison shook her head, slowly coming out of her shock. “No, [y/n/n] wouldn’t do that to me.”
“Ali, did you not hear a word of that recording?” CeCe asked in disbelief.
“I did, okay?” Ali said back defensively.
“Then, what’s the matter?” CeCe fired back. “You gotta cut this girl out!”
“I can’t!” Ali exclaimed. “I won’t.”
“Why not?” CeCe demanded.
“She’s one of my best friends, alright?” Ali said back. “She’s always been there for me.”
“Well, that’s because she’s had a motive all this time,” CeCe pressed. “To me, it looks like she’s being your friend so that she could be with your brother. How are you not seeing this, Ali?”
“Look, if you’re worried about Jason breaking up with you for [y/n/n], you don’t have to. I doubt Jason knows that she exists,” Ali rolled her eyes. Though, on the inside, she was still processing the fact that [Y/N] liked Jason.
“I’m not worried about my relationship with Jason,” CeCe replied, her voice softening. “I feel terrible you’re being used. You don’t deserve that.”
Alison stared at her brother’s girlfriend, who was no less than a sister to her. Several moments later, she got up from her bed and walked to her desk. She looked at the picture frame that sat there and picked it up. It was a photo of her and the girls that was taken at Spencer’s lake house.
“What’s so special about her?” CeCe asked, now standing behind Alison. She looked at the photo as well. “What’s stopping you from cutting her out of your life?”
Alison put the frame back on the desk and turned to face CeCe.
“Look, I know I’m not the easiest person to be around,” she said, looking uncharacteristically insecure, which shocked CeCe. “And, being around [y/n/n] makes me feel like there’s still… good in me.”
“What are you talking about? You’re a good person,” CeCe argued.
“No, you don’t understand,” said Ali. “She stands up to me, yeah, but she doesn’t make me feel… less.”
“Now, it sounds like you’re in love with the girl,” CeCe sassed.
“Stop,” Ali snapped at CeCe.
“Ali, what’s the matter?” CeCe asked, her voice softening. “She’s just one person. You’ll still have your other friends.”
Alison looked away without replying. Deep down, she had a feeling that if it came down to choosing between [Y/N] and herself, the other girls would definitely choose the former.
She didn’t think [Y/N] was leader-material like she was. But, [Y/N] was smart, kind, and compassionate. She never put the other girls down like Ali did. In fact, she along with Spencer criticized Ali every time she bullied one of their friends or their other classmates. [Y/N] and Spencer stood up for Mona and Lucas several times behind their backs, but they were unsuccessful in getting Ali to completely stop bullying.
Alison was aware that if she kicked [Y/N] out of her little group, Hanna would leave without a doubt. [Y/N] and Hanna were best friends before Alison entered their lives. If [Y/N] and Hanna left, Alison didn’t know for how long Aria, Emily and Spencer would stay by her side. Why would they stay with her when she occasionally made their lives miserable as well?
Alison knew losing one friend meant losing all of them at one point and she didn’t want that.
“What are you thinking?” CeCe asked gently, touching Ali’s forearm.
“Nothing,” she replied, clearing her throat. “Look, I’ll deal with this. Just let it be.”
CeCe looked unconvinced when Ali spoke again, “And, delete that recording.”
“What?” CeCe gaped.
“I said delete it,” Alison demanded, leaving no room for argument.
“Fine,” CeCe snapped and walked to grab her cellphone from Ali’s bed. She walked back over to the younger blonde and deleted the recording in front of her eyes. “Happy?”
“You don’t have any more copies saved, do you?” Ali asked with narrowed eyes.
“Wow, Ali,” CeCe chuckled sarcastically. “No, I don’t.”
“Good, this never happened,” Ali stated, putting an end to the conversation.
Unbeknownst to both girls, Jason DiLaurentis stood outside Ali’s bedroom, perplexed by the conversation he just overheard.
Hearing CeCe say an unhappy goodbye to Alison brought him out of his reverie and he quietly rushed to his bedroom, locking the door behind him. He sat at the edge of his bed and his mind replayed the chat he accidentally stumbled onto.
A short while ago, he had returned home from hanging out with his friends. He was sober for once and he was actually glad that he hadn’t given into Ian’s persuasion as he usually did.
Things between him and Ian had been tense. Jason mentally beat himself up almost every day for introducing the idea of filming girls. He had been high and he had no idea what he was doing or saying. But, Ian and Garrett had gone along with the idea, forming a group between themselves called, N.A.T – Nos Animadverto Totus, meaning ‘we see all.’
At first, it was unserious and fun. However, the moment Ian brought up the idea of filming Alison’s best friends was when Jason lost it. He didn’t care for Ali’s friends, but they were kids; they were the same age as his little sister. He saw red at the thought of someone filming Alison without her knowledge. He also realized what a hypocrite he had been when he was okay with filming other girls in town. Garrett acted as the peacemaker between him and Ian, and was successful in getting the latter to drop filming altogether.
Although Ian was his normal self around Jason, the latter had a hard time being the same around his friend.
And, so, he had decided to come early from yet another party he had been invited to. He was passing by Ali’s bedroom when a familiar voice stopped him.
‘It’s just a crush, Hanna banana. I’m sure I’ll get over it, get over him, soon.’
Alison had her powerpuff girls over at their house literally all the time. It didn’t take him long to recognize the voice as [Y/N]’s. Except, her voice sounded like it was from a recording. He thought that was strange and ended up eavesdropping on a conversation he was never meant to hear.
By the end of it, he was stunned to say the least.
One, his girlfriend, CeCe had recorded a conversation between two of Ali’s best friends without their knowledge for sure.
Two, [Y/N], one of his little sister’s best friends, was crushing on him. More importantly, she was worried about him.
He didn’t think any of Ali’s friends actually paid attention to him. He was sure they must be disgusted because whenever they were around, he was high, drunk, angry or all of the above. Also, he knew the tales Ali must’ve told them about him to embarrass him.
So, to hear that one of the powerpuff girls had feelings for him and was concerned for him was odd and… touching.
His sister never failed to remind him of how worthless he was. He didn’t remember the last time his father had a word with him. Although his mother still cared for him, she looked at him as a lost cause. This was the first time in a while he heard of someone being worried for him and it brought a strange ache in his chest.
In all of this, he didn’t miss how CeCe tried to get Ali to break her friendship with [Y/N]. It made sense that CeCe might be a little insecure, knowing another girl had feelings for her boyfriend.
However, what surprised him was his sister’s reaction. The Alison he knew would’ve been on her way to make [Y/N]’s life miserable for liking him. Except, what she did was the exact opposite. She stood up for [Y/N] and was not ready to give up on their friendship. This only increased his curiosity about the girl who had feelings for him.
After that night, Jason began to observe [Y/N] when she was around. He was very discreet in doing so, because he didn’t want to appear… well, creepy. She might be crushing on him and was worried about him. But, he was very well aware that she was about five years younger than him and he wanted to be careful. He also didn’t want Ali to know that he knew about [Y/N]’s feelings for him.
A few weeks later, he understood why Alison didn’t want to lose her friendship with [Y/N]. The [y/h/c]- haired girl was a ray of sunshine to describe her simply. With her bright [y/e/c] eyes and genuine smile, she could win anyone over. There were a handful of times he saw her stand up to Ali all without losing her composure and that amazed him.
He crossed paths with her a handful of times and he began to doubt whether she had a crush on him. Her breathing didn’t race, her cheeks didn’t pink, and her eyes didn’t wander in nervousness. Instead, she would flash him one of those kind smiles and politely greet him before carrying on with whatever she was doing. She didn’t act the way he expected girls would do when they liked someone.
Days passed. Jason was caught between trusting what he overheard and thinking if he misunderstood something.
Soon, Labor Day arrived. Ian returned from Hilton Hill and was determined on patching things up with Jason. The next thing Jason remembered was waking up in the morning with a terrible hangover, a suspicious note, and the terrifying news of his little sister missing. His parents were shattered and Ali’s friends were frightened. Ian left Rosewood. The police were unsuccessful in locating his sister.
That was a wakeup call for Jason. He was devastated. He and Ali barely got along, but she was his baby sister. He was supposed to protect her and he failed. Now, she was gone.
Soon, he and his family moved out of Rosewood after the police closed the case.
He kept the note for some reason and it made him sick to his stomach every time he read it. I know what you did. Alison got on his last nerve most of the time, but he would never hurt her. Yet, that night was a blur and part of him often wondered if he had unintentionally hurt her.
He never wanted to be stuck in such a situation again, where he couldn’t remember anything. Therefore, he had finally gotten help for his addiction and changed himself for the better. He knew his parents noticed the changes in him, but they never said anything. They were grieving Alison and he didn’t blame them.
‘I just… I feel bad for him. His addiction’s gotten worse since we met him, I feel. His family doesn’t seem to care about him and he doesn’t have the greatest set of friends either. I feel like he can do better with the right guidance. That’s all.’
[Y/N]’s words occasionally rang in his ears. He often thought about her and how she was doing. He wondered if she and the other girls still hung out, thought about Ali.
A year later, they got confirmation Alison was dead.
It was with great difficulty that he and his parents went back to Rosewood. Being present at his little sister’s funeral was the hardest thing he experienced. Alison’s best friends were there along with their families. They hugged him and his parents, offering their condolences.
After the funeral, Jason and his parents once again left Rosewood. His father buried himself in his work while his mother tried her best to move forward. It broke Jason’s heart to see his mother stare at nothing with blank eyes during the day and he would often hear her walk around the house at night, unable to sleep.
Jason tried to indulge himself in work as well, helping his father with his real estate business. The thought that he might’ve hurt Ali was always there in the back of his mind. The temptation to drink his sorrow away was there, but he was successful in not giving in.
Shortly after, Alison’s friends came up with the idea of a memorial. His parents were touched by the idea; however, they didn’t have the strength to return to Rosewood and participate in it. Therefore, Jason took responsibility and came to Rosewood yet again.
This was the first time he actually had a conversation with Alison’s friends. He could sense the wariness from Aria, Emily and Spencer. [Y/N] and Hanna, on the other hand, seemed at ease. He was glad he got to interact with [Y/N] again; after all, she unknowingly played a part in him changing his life for the better. [Y/N] was still the same a year later; soft-spoken, calm, kind eyes, and warm smile.
He ran into [Y/N] by coincidence on the day of the SATs. He had been furious and hurt after hearing about Ali’s memorial being destroyed by someone. He wanted answers and didn’t shy away from tracking down the head detective of his sister’s case even during a storm. Before he could find Wilden, he found [Y/N] instead. He was glad he ran into her; talking to her calmed him down a little.
The third time he and [Y/N] were in the same room was when she was hospitalized after the accident. When the news initially reached him, he had been scared out of his mind. He desperately wanted to visit her, see how she was doing with his own eyes. After a couple of hours of mental debate, he gave in and visited her. Looking at her injured state, he had been worried, but she had reassured him, leaving him in disbelief. He had no idea how she remained so optimistic even in that situation.
Unfortunately, he had to leave Rosewood that night. It was only a temporary trip to plan his sister’s memorial. When he was leaving town, he knew he was coming back. For good. For [Y/N].
During that break, he had no idea he would find out a secret that would change his life.
~ flashback ends ~
Crickets chirped in the background, laughter of people rang in the air from a distance. Jason observed [Y/N]’s reaction after he finished speaking. She stared straight ahead, still seated in the passenger seat of his car. Somewhere during his revelation, her hand had moved away from his and rested in her lap, clutching the paper bag of pastries absent-mindedly.
“[Y/N]?” he called softly, not wanting to startle her, after minutes passed by in silence.
She turned to look at him and he had a hard time reading her expression.
“I- you- uh, you haven’t said anything,” he said, a little nervously, his fingers tightening on the gear shift between them.
“All this time,” she began, her voice low. “You knew how I felt about you.”
“No,” he rushed to say before sighing. “Yes. I don’t know, to be honest.”
[Y/N] simply stared at him and he took that as his cue to continue, “It’s been a year, [Y/N]. I didn’t know for sure if you still felt the same way.”
She nodded her head slowly and her eyes moved away from his, thinking over his words.
“Hey,” he said softly, placing a hand on her forearm. “I haven’t been playing with you or- or teasing you if that’s what you’re thinking. I honestly didn’t know how to bring this up.”
Her eyes softened a bit at that.
“I mean, you’re so young. I don’t even know if it’s right for me to feel the way I do about you,” he confessed, not meeting her eyes. “Besides, you were my sister’s best friend. That makes it all the more… complicated, I guess.”
“I understand,” she replied after a few moments and he looked at her again. “I have no idea how it started. How I started to care for you. It kind of slowly turned into more and I was guilty… and scared. I mean, you’re Ali’s brother. I thought best friend’s brother was off limits or something.”
He chuckled at her words.
“Ali knew, though,” he pointed out. “And, she never asked you?”
“No,” she frowned. “I’m still surprised by it.”
“From what I overheard, she sounded like she didn’t want to lose you,” he replied.
“That’s… a little weird,” she said. “I mean, even if she didn’t want to be friends with me anymore, she would’ve had the others.”
“I guess so,” he nodded. “Ali was… unpredictable.”
“I would’ve predicted the Ali I knew to confront me the moment she knew,” [Y/N] remarked and Jason nodded again.
The two fell into silence and [Y/N] knew he was patiently waiting for her to answer. Suddenly, she felt a little overwhelmed in the confined space of his car. She opened the door and stepped out of the vehicle, leaving the pastry bag on the seat. She closed the door and walked a few steps away before stopping.
Jason followed her and stood next to her. He wanted to say something, but he didn’t know. He didn’t want to make her feel pressured.
After a few moments, she turned and stood, facing him.
“My feelings for you haven’t changed,” she said quietly, wrapping her arms around herself. His breath hitched at her words and he grew hopeful. “But, I’m scared. This would change things, wouldn't it? If- if we gave us a chance?”
“I think so,” he replied, taking a step towards her. His heart was still racing from hearing that she still liked him.
“I’m scared,” she repeated, looking up at him. “My family, my friends… I don’t know how they’ll react.”
In the back of her mind, she didn’t forget about A. She realized that they could use Jason to make her life more miserable. However, she was tired of being cautious.
“I hear you,” he replied sincerely. “But, for now, what do you want?”
She gazed into his eyes before replying a few moments later, “I want to be with you. I want to give us a chance and… and see where it goes.”
Her response knocked the breath out of his lungs, freezing him momentarily.
“What about you?” she still asked, despite having an idea of what his answer might be.
He tenderly cupped her right cheek in his palm.
“I want to be with you too,” he answered. “Just like you, I’m terrified. I know that this… us might be strange for your family and friends. But, we’ll take it one day at a time and figure things out as we go.”
“Okay,” she answered, holding his wrist with her hands. “Okay, deal.”
Finally, she smiled, the tension leaving her, and he returned it. His thumb ran over her chin, his eyes dropping to her lips for a second. In response, her hold on his wrist tightened, almost in anticipation. The dream from earlier that morning had left her wanting.
He leaned towards her slowly, giving her time to pull away if she didn’t want to. Instead, she met him halfway, standing on her tiptoes. Their lips pressed against each other, the contact making them shudder a little. For their first kiss, they didn’t feel fireworks nor any adrenaline rush. Their lips moved in a slow, steady rhythm, leaving them feel fuzzy and warm on the insides.
When they separated, they noticed they were pressed against each other. His one hand still held her cheek while the other was wrapped around her back, holding her to him. She had one hand on his heart while the other cupped his clean-shaven cheek.
“This is not a dream, right?” he whispered and she let out a breathy chuckle. If only he knew.
“No, it’s not,” she replied instead, her thumb caressing his cheekbone.
“Okay, good,” he said with mock relief, causing her to laugh again with him joining her.
She moved both of her arms to wrap around his back and hugged him, pressing her cheek against his chest. He instantly hugged her back, his one hand still around her back and the other now cradling her head. He dropped a kiss against her hair before leaning his head against hers.
They were both aware that the road ahead won’t be easy. Nevertheless, they were ready to face whatever it was their strange town had in store for them.

It was a rainy Saturday in Rosewood.
With a cup of hot chocolate from The Grille, [Y/N] found herself at the bookstore. Due to the not-so-pleasant weather, the store was not too crowded with most people preferring to stay in the warmth of their homes.
[Y/N] needed a break from school and pretty much everything. So, she appreciated the peace and quiet of the bookstore. The rhythmic drumming of rain was somewhat comforting and drowned out the rest of Rosewood. She sipped on her warm drink and took her time, walking around the store. The zippers of her boots chimed with her movements as she walked through the rows of shelves, scanning the titles of the books. She had not yet caught a title that interested her.
“Hello, [Y/N].”
The familiar voice came from behind her and made her pause. She turned behind and there stood Jason at the end of the aisle. His smile widened when their eyes met.
“Hi Jason,” she breathed out, smiling. “What are you doing here?”
“Looking for a good read,” he replied as if it was obvious.
“Right,” she cleared her throat, gripping her now empty styrofoam cup.
He made his way towards her and stopped once there was minimal distance between the two of them. [Y/N]’s breath hitched at the sudden proximity. She exhaled through her mouth silently as she looked at him. He was dressed in an olive green Henley shirt with dark jeans and a black hooded jacket. His blond hair was parted on the side and some strands (that probably weren’t covered by his hoodie) seemed damp as they fell over his forehead.
“[Y/N],” he whispered, pulling her back to the present.
His green eyes were intense as they looked into hers and she felt the world around them blur into the background. Nothing and no one else existed except for the two of them.
She almost held onto her breath when she noticed his left hand gently rise from her peripheral vision. His movements were steady, not wanting to startle her, as his palm gently held her jaw. Her eyes fluttered at the contact and her free hand fisted the edge of her raincoat.
“Please tell me I’m not the only one,” he whispered again. His eyes and voice were almost pleading as he spoke.
“What do you mean?” she asked quietly.
“That I’m not the only one who feels this,” he replied so softly and took one more step forward, the tips of his shoes brushing against hers.
She felt her heart race at his words and the slowly decreasing distance between them.
“I can’t stop thinking about you,” he confessed, leaning his forehead against hers, and she closed her eyes. “I told myself several times that I shouldn’t. But, I can’t help it.”
She opened her eyes again and her breath hitched at having him so close to her. It would be a lie to say she hadn’t dreamt of such moments.
“Please tell me I’m not the only one,” he repeated.
Her hand, that previously held onto her coat like a lifeline, came up to hold his hand, her fingers wrapping around his wrist.
“You’re not,” she finally replied, smiling softly. “I can’t stop thinking about you too.”
“Do you mean it?” he questioned in disbelief despite the hopeful glint in his eyes.
“Yes,” she nodded once, their foreheads still leaning against each other.
He let out a soft, breathless laugh. His thumb caressed the skin of her chin and moved to her bottom lip, tracing it. Her fingers tightened around his wrist, her breath hitching once again. His thumb moved to her cheek, but the gap between their lips slowly began to decrease. The two of them almost held their breaths in anticipation of their first kiss when the familiar tone of her phone rang in the air.
[Y/N] sat up on her bed abruptly, her eyes wide and her chest heaving.
There was no rain, bookstore or Jason. Instead, there was sunlight streaming through the blinds of her windows, she was in her bedroom, and there was no Jason. She was all by herself.
She touched her chest, right where her heart was, trying to calm her breathing. The dream felt so real. The sound of the rain, the quiet of the bookstore, and of course, Jason. The intensity of his eyes as he looked at her and his touch, everything felt so real. A part of her was a little disappointed that it was only a dream.
Her phone pinged one more time, pulling her out of the memory of her dream. With a sigh, she reached over to grab her cellphone from the nightstand. Her eyes opened wide when she noticed that Jason had texted her. With bated breath, she opened her text thread with him.
‘Good morning, [Y/N]. Sorry to disturb you so early! I’m sending you the information of a guy from a youth center. Do you mind forwarding it to Aria? I think he might be able to help Mike.’
[Y/N] frowned. She wondered why he couldn’t just send the information to Aria himself instead of sending it through her. She let her phone fall back on the bed and pushed her hair back from where it fell over the side of her face. The dream of Jason had messed with her mind and she couldn’t reply to him right away. Instead, she placed her cellphone on her nightstand, made her bed, and went to the bathroom to get ready for school.
Once she brushed her teeth and took a shower, she felt much better. She replied back to Jason, saying that she would forward his message to Aria and he answered in no time, saying ‘Thank you!’ She simply smiled and went downstairs.
…
Later at school, she was walking to her classroom with Emily and Aria. Emily was frightened after getting a text from A about her medical report.
“Hanna’s right, Em,” Aria said encouragingly. “No one owns you. And, definitely not this bitch.”
“They’re just trying to scare you,” [Y/N] added.
“Well, it’s working,” Emily sighed and stopped walking near her locker, turning to Aria. “Did you find out why Mike broke into my garage?”
“No, he’s not talking to anybody,” Aria replied with a soft huff. “He won’t even return calls from his best friend.”
“What’s going on with him?” Emily asked.
“I have no clue,” Aria shook her head. “My parents keep coming to me, thinking I have answers.”
[Y/N] caught the sight of Jason walking down the hallway, chatting with a student. She tried her best to remain normal, especially when her mind replayed the dream she had of him. Emily and Aria silenced when they noticed Jason as well.
Jason caught their eyes and smiled with a friendly wave, his eyes lingering on [Y/N] a little longer as he walked past the girls. [Y/N] waved back, returning the smile. So did Emily and Aria, but with unease.
“He’s doing school visits too?” Emily asked once Jason disappeared out of their sights.
“He counsels kids on substance abuse,” [Y/N] replied and her friends stared at her. “I ran into him when he was talking to your mom, Aria. That’s when I found out.”
“[y/n/n], you’re not talking to him behind our back, right?” Emily asked, looking worried.
“Yeah, and why did he send you that youth center information to send to me?” Aria followed.
“I don’t know,” [Y/N] shrugged at Aria. “He asked me to forward it to you and I did.”
“So, you’re talking to him?” Emily questioned, looking so much like Mrs. Fields.
“Look, I just say hello and exchange a word or two when I see him,” [Y/N] said. “That’s all.”
“[y/n/n], you literally fought with Spencer for him,” Emily pressed.
“I didn’t mean to,” [Y/N/] said, feeling a little guilty. “But, don’t tell me you’re not tired of accusing every other person of killing Ali?”
Emily and Aria exchanged looks, not replying.
“Look, you need to be careful,” Emily told [Y/N]. “I know you like to see the best in people, but he might be a killer.”
“Right,” [Y/N] scoffed. “A few months ago, we were at the same spot, accusing Toby. Then, Ian. Here we are again, I guess.”
Both Emily and Aria couldn’t find the right words to say.
“I’m going to class,” [Y/N] said before walking away.
…
During lunch, [Y/N] found a quiet spot in the library. She didn’t feel like being around her friends, especially Spencer after their disagreement regarding Jason.
“Hey, you.”
[Y/N] looked up to see a smiling Hanna sit in front of her.
“What are you doing here, Han?” [Y/N] frowned.
“That’s rude,” Hanna complained. “You’re supposed to be happy to see me.”
“Of course, I’m happy to see you,” [Y/N] chuckled. “But, why aren’t you with the others?”
“I wanted to be with you,” Hanna shrugged as if it was that simple.
“Han,” [Y/N] sighed.
“If it makes you feel better, I did talk to them before coming here,” said Hanna. “They were talking about Jenna. Apparently, they’re taking out her eyeballs.”
“What now?” [Y/N] asked, stunned, almost choking on her water.
“I don’t know, I didn’t understand the details,” Hanna shrugged, beginning to eat her sandwich. “I guess, flap over the pupil or something.”
“Oh okay,” [Y/N] whispered to herself, then started eating her lunch as well.
“Are you and Spencer gonna make up anytime soon?” Hanna asked after finishing her sandwich.
[Y/N] finished swallowing her food before replying, “I don’t know. I hate fighting with her. I hate fighting with any of you guys.”
“I know,” Hanna nodded, sympathetically. “I get where Spencer is coming from. She wants to be… cautious.”
“I agree, we have to be,” [Y/N] said. “But, it’s…”
She trailed off, not wanting to bring up Jason’s name while they’re at school.
“I know,” Hanna said, understanding. “For your sake, I’m really hoping Spencer’s wrong. So, we can tell her ‘I told you so’ together.”
[Y/N] laughed under her breath, shaking her head. Hanna smiled, seeing her friend smile and not be stressed.
“How is Caleb doing?” [Y/N] asked, changing the subject, and Hanna began to narrate Caleb's conflicting feelings about reconnecting with his mother.
…
It was late evening and [Y/N] waited in line at Lucky Leon’s to pick up her order of brownies. She was craving something sweet and she needed it with the drama going on with her friends except for Hanna.
She and Spencer still hadn’t seen eye to eye. Emily along with Aria seemed hesitant between advising her to stay away from Jason and keeping their mouths shut.
Overall, it had been an extremely stressful couple of days.
A few minutes later, it was her turn and she picked up her order, thanking the cashier kindly. She made her way out of the bakery and into the cool evening air. She was glad she was wearing jeans, full-sleeved t-shirt with a warm coat.
The sun had set for the day and the sky was gradually turning to a darker shade of blue. The streets suddenly seemed very empty and it made her feel nervous. With the threat of A still looming over her and her friends, she knew it was not wise to be out by herself, especially in the dark. Keeping a no nonsense face on, she sped-walked through the streets towards her home.
A low rumble of an engine reached her ears, causing her steps to falter. She turned to her right just as Jason’s convertible pulled up next to her by the curb. By now, she stopped walking, a little surprised by his presence. Meanwhile, Jason got out of the car and walked towards her, a concerned look on his face.
“[Y/N], what are you doing out by yourself?” he asked, frowning in worry still as he looked around. “It’s not safe.”
She didn’t miss to take in his outfit: an olive green Henley shirt with dark jeans. It was scarily similar to the one he wore in her dream, except he wasn’t wearing a jacket at the moment.
“I know,” she nodded, clearing her throat. “I just- I needed some fresh air and miscalculated the time, I guess.”
“Can I drop you home?” he asked.
“Oh, you don’t have to do that,” she blinked before replying. “I’m just a block away.”
“I don’t mind,” he said back, looking at her with those intense eyes that reminded again her of the dream she had of him.
“Uh, o-okay,” she replied. She couldn’t say no to him when he looked at her like that. Besides, she liked spending time with him despite Spencer and Emily’s warnings.
“Come on,” he smiled and led her to the passenger side, opening the door for her. She thanked him and sat inside the car, keeping the paper bag on her lap. She wore her seatbelt just as Jason got in the drivers side and started the engine again. “Someone broke into my shed, by the way. I had to get a new lock.”
She looked at him, a little shocked while Jason kept his eyes on the road after glancing at her once.
“That’s terrible,” she frowned. “It couldn’t have been Mike, though. Aria said he’s been stuck in his room.”
“I didn’t go there,” he said right away.
[Y/N] nodded and the ride continued in silence for a few minutes before she heard Jason sigh.
“Do you mind if I stop here for a few minutes?” he suddenly asked.
She looked around and noticed they were near the basketball court. She could feel her heart rate increase a little in anticipation. She didn’t know if she was being a fool, but she ended up saying yes. With a small smile, Jason pulled into the parking lot and parked in one of the spaces.
“I’m glad I ran into you,” he said, turning in his seat to look at her. “I- I’ve been wanting to talk to you about something. For a while now, but I keep chickening out.”
He laughed at himself, shaking his head. [Y/N] remained silent but her breath was uneven as she listened to him.
“But, I want to do this today or else I might go crazy,” he said, looking at her again. “Some months before Ali went missing, I overheard her conversation with CeCe. Uh… CeCe is my ex-girlfriend.”
He almost seemed afraid of talking about his ex in front of her but [Y/N] didn’t really feel anything. He was almost five years older than her so she was aware he must’ve had girlfriends in the past.
“The weird thing was I thought I heard your voice and Hanna’s too,” he said, confusing her.
“Hanna and I’ve never met CeCe,” she replied, shaking her head.
“Yeah, I figured,” Jason nodded. “Ali was strangely possessive when it came to her friends. She didn’t want you guys to meet CeCe and she didn’t want CeCe anywhere near you guys.”
“To be honest with you, this is the first time I’m hearing CeCe’s name,” she said.
“Right,” he responded. “So, uh…”
“Jason,” she called calmly, placing her hand on top of his that rested on the gearshift. “Relax.”
He looked at her hand on his before meeting her eyes again. She waited so patiently for him to gather his thoughts with no judgement on her face. He felt a little silly for acting like a teenage boy in front of her, unable to clearly communicate. But, this conversation with her could either make them or break them and he desperately hoped for the former outcome.
