A Perfect Summer Afternoon
Sunlight streams in from the closed window shades as I lounge in my favorite recliner.
Worn leather cools my skin as the sound of birdsong serenades me.
I smile warmly as I see the tangle of hair that's the top of your head peek around a nearby corner as you spy on me from across the room.
"What's wrong, baby? Too hot to nap?" I say, earning me a blush from you as you timidly abandon your hiding place.
Your binky bobs in your mouth as you nod your head up and down in affirmation.
Your favorite blankie is wrapped around your shoulders like a cape as you toddle ever closer to me.
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart. Why don't you come here and let me help?"
As you come within arms reach, I scoop you into my arms, pulling you into my chest, as I wrap your blankie around both of us.
As I settle back into the comfortable chair, I feel you nuzzle into my chest, relaxing into my touch.
My arms wrap around you. One hand gently massaging the back of your head as the other lovingly pats your backside.
I nuzzle my nose into your hair, breathing in your scent before planting a gentle on the top of your head.
I feel your breathing start to settle as your eyelids grow ever heavier. It doesn't take long before you're asleep wrapped in my arms, and I'm smiling, reveling in the feeling of a perfect, summer afternoon.
