Martha and 10’s relationship is also unhealthy. But Martha’s journey is actually hella empowering because she learns her own self worth. She learns she doesn’t need the Doctor’s approval. She doesn’t need to become like the Doctor. She steps away on her own terms. She becomes a better person not because of the Doctor, but in spite of him.

But instead of giving the finger to the fandom, RTD lovingly wrapped a bow on all of NuWho and said, “it’s time for the Doctor to heal and move on but we’re going to do that by giving Fourteen his best friend. He’s going to live a good life surrounded by family. He’s going to be happy and talk about all of his adventures and his past.”

It’s so beautiful. Thank you RTD. Because it is time to move into something new—not because the fandom is shitty—but because that’s what’s best for the character.

Leaving Fourteen happy was so soothing for me, too. And for a lot of people, I think. That’s the bonus.

In 2005 RTD takes over Doctor Who after 16 years off the air. But rather than bringing back the character with the same characterization, RTD gives the Doctor PTSD a la the Time War. This fundamentally changes how the character is written. The Doctor is not the same. Even after Moffat undoes the Time War he continues writing the Doctor in a similar manner.

Fast forward to 2022 when RTD takes over the show again. The Doctor has been running. The character continually ignores their feelings and never talks about their past or the people they traveled with. Companions have been asking the same questions about the Doctor’s behavior. For 17 years.

Rather than continue on with that same characterization, RTD decides to shift the character in a monumental way.

15 has had time to heal. The bi-regeneration is confusing but 15 says he is the way he is because 14 stopped and healed.

I loved the idea of the Doctor part passing down to Rose! I loved the idea that it slowed the transformation but didn’t stop it completely. I just think that should’ve been the ticking clock throughout the specials. Doctor and Donna have to figure out a way to save both Donna AND Rose. Can they save both? Or maybe because of who Rose is she’ll always be more stable than Donna.
