Reptiblr Service Announcement
Wright’s Reptiles has recently stirred up a lot of conflict. If you were involved or otherwise want to see issues resolved, we would appreciate your time spent reading this “RSA”.
My fiancè loves animals. Especially the little unappreciated ones. I was honestly a bit skeptical when he said he wanted to get reptiles and was even more so when he said he wanted to get multiple. I was trying to be supportive and learn to love the things he loves. As an event planner, I felt the best way I could contribute was to maintain a little tumblr blog of him and his little friends.
I quickly fell in love with reptiblr. It was so full of nice, misunderstood animal lovers just like us. There was so much assistance and appreciation for each other. We felt like it would be a great place to learn and grow this precocious hobby.
We never claimed to be pros, infact we have only cared for reptiles for about 2 years or so. When someone asked us a pretty simple question about what to get for their first snake, we answered with information that we had been given and that had been working for us since we started. Information that, apparently, is not widely accepted among pros.
That, in addition to the more trying and common ethical issue of breeding Spiders:
When you have two snakes of different gender and same species, even new keepers are going to fantasize about eventually having little baby snakes. When we first posted that we were considering this, all we got in return was aggressive remarks for seemingly no reason. To us, or Spider was just that. A pretty Ball Python. When someone finally asked us why we might breed the gene, we looked into the argument to figure out what was up and relayed the soundest supporting logic we could find, unaware that this was a common argument and that a verdict had already been made.
This didn’t start 2 days ago when the shit hit the fan. We’ve been receiving hate mail telling us we’re garbage without giving reasons for a while now. It was disheartening… until a couple days ago, we had no idea why people were mad at us. This whole time, we didn’t know Spiders were unethical. Then when it blew up 2 days ago, I went in prepared to be further offended…
I felt heartbroken, offended, and shamed for things I never knew were issues.
I could definitely win some sort of “Assholes for Overreacting” award…
So that’s it… I’m sorry I blew you all off. What can I do? I’m done arguing and I want to give this another chance. For my fiancè’s sake and for the sake of his little friends.
How do I properly apologize to everyone that was involved? I’d like to start fresh and get some good info where I can… please understand, feelings are tender… if you have any help to offer us, please do so in a message rather than an ask unless you’d like to remain Anon. I expect fixing this will take some effort, but I’d like to start making friends…
