Randy nodded his head as a simple you’re welcome, a surprising smile forming at her words. “Yeah, change can be good,” he agreed. “Doesn’t make it easy, though,” he added, thinking about his own situation of change — filled with lots of ups and downs, highs and lows. He honestly would not have recognized the other through a mutual friend, but as soon as she mentioned Romeo’s name, he looked at her curiously and nodded his head. “Yeah, I am. You know him?” He asked. “How’s he doing? I haven’t seen him in awhile,” he admitted, “I’ve been kinda wrapped up in my own shit lately.”

“No, it’s not easy at all,” she agreed, her smile faltering. There was a reason she’d bought her parents’ house after they’d moved, a reason she’d never ventured out of the town she’d grown up in. She couldn’t stomach the idea of trying to reinvent her life, even if she wasn’t satisfied with the way it was going here. There was comfort in familiarity. “I used to babysit him. I don’t see him as much as I’d like, but he seemed alright the last time I visited.” She nodded in understanding. “I haven’t gotten around to seeing my friends much lately either. I suppose that’s part of life, not being able to find time for the things we wish we could.”

Seeing Elaine had brought a special sort of smile to his face, one softer and more meaningful than any other kind of smile he usually drummed up. It was made just for her and the others, the childhood friends he grew up with on Hundred Acre Street that he only really saw in passing these days, filled with years of memories. This was holidays spent bouncing between everyone’s houses, giving gifts to everyone in each of their families, finally crashing - usually at the Luddys - long after the sun went down and the sugar in their system had run out. “ Thank you, friend, ” he told her, taking the wreath carefully in one hand so as not to possibly break anything on it, using two hands to get it up securely. It was a pretty thing, all holly and sprigs of white flowers, commissioned by him from a local flower shop that had a special on wreaths for a discount during the holiday. Once it was up and he was satisfied with the angle, he looked back down at her and her worried features, smiling a little more. “ I won’t, it’s okay. ” His voice was gentle, reassuring, even chuckling at the end. “ I’m actually almost done. So I’ll be down in just a moment. ” As he followed through on his word, slowly coming down, he continued, “ My house usually puts every one on Hundred Acre to shame. ” He chuckled again. “ You know me - I always end up going three extra steps too far during the holidays. ” Halloween and Christmas were the worst for his electricity bills, but it was worth it to see his friends faces when they spotted his house. Finally on the ground, he turned his full attention to her. “ Did you want some decorations ? ” he asked, as much curious as he was excited over the possibility of getting to do more decorating. “ I’ve got some extra tinsel, and I could go see if the shop I got the wreath from has any more. I know the holiday ‘s only a few days out, but it’d be fun ! ” Well, fun for him; he knew his version of fun and her’s were very different. “ We don’t even have to do the outside, if you don’t want ! We can decorate your sitting room. Get you some of those tall pretty candles, or a poinsettia. ” She was also someone who tended not to like too much attention, and he of course didn’t want to make her uncomfortable.

Elaine was a worrier. She worried about strangers she saw crossing the street, so of course she’d be nervous about one of her closest friends falling from the roof. She may not voice how much she cared often, biting her tongue so not to come off as too much, but her friends were the brightest light in her life. Among them was Timothy. People that truly meant the world to her and always would, no matter what directions life took them in.

“I wouldn’t say too far,” she smiled softly. Sometimes the world was bleak and bland, more often than not in her eyes, and all of the cheerful decorations were nice. She could look out her window and see the lights and it would make everything seem just a tiny bit better. She watched him climbing down with her hands clasped, trying not to blurt out another ‘be careful’, breathing a small sigh of relief once he was in front of her. “Oh, I would feel bad taking yours,” she said softly, worried he was being too nice. She didn’t want to take advantage of his kindness. “It would be pretty. I always fall short when it comes to decorating. Poinsettias, I suppose they’re nice...”

If there was one good habit Randy kept after breaking his sobriety, it was his gym routine, the one last thing he had a grasp on to keep his life somewhat together. Not even a hangover could force him to skip a day, and here he was, getting ready to get on the treadmill next to the ellipticals. As he was setting down his water bottle, though, a voice beside him caught his attention. “Oh, yeah,” he replied, walking over to look at the buttons. “Uhh.. Here,” he pressed a button that would turn it on, then he pointed to another button beside it, “and there’s a lot of settings you can mess with, too.” He smiled, taking a step back to let her look at the settings. “First time here?”

“Thank you. I will try my best to figure them all out.” The help was appreciated. She got overwhelmed so easy, it seemed, she would probably just give up and go home if she stressed herself out too much about turning the thing on. Elaine gave the guy a small smile, trying to place his face. She was sure he recognized him. “Yes, gyms are far from my usual scene. But sometimes change is good.” So she had been told. If working out didn’t work to improve her mind, at least she’d tried. She wouldn’t lose anything by trying. Her therapist would be pleased. “You’re friends with Romeo, aren’t you?”

     “You’re probably looking for granulated, then,” she replied, grabbing a bag of sugar from the shelf to hand to the other woman, who was seemingly easily discouraged from her pursuit. Tinsley loved baking enough to think that it was within anyone’s best interest to give it a really good effort before giving up. “Oh, don’t say that! Oreos are not it.You deserve better, girl. Baking is really rewarding when you actually get into it…You know, I have some really great recipes, I can give you an easy one for beginners.”

“Oreos aren’t so bad... sometimes...” They were a good depression snack, anyway. But Tinsley was right. They weren’t the same as fresh baked homemade cookies, which was what Elaine was really craving today. “Oh, would you?” Her eyes lit up a little at that. “I’ve looked online but I get so confused at some of these recipes. I wouldn’t think of myself unintelligent, but baking is... another language.”

Even though fashion designing was a much different medium than anything the mewni gallery had to show off, it was still a part of art and being around any form of expression was always a good way to try sparking some inspiration. Which was why Giselle often found herself roaming the gallery halls, just taking in the pieces on display all around her. Usually she stuck to herself, smiling and waving at everyone that passed by but not usually striking up many conversations. This time was usually meant just for herself. But when the redhead spotted a woman that’s entire body language practically screamed sadness, she couldn’t just not say anything or try to help. Slowly approaching the stranger with a small smile, Giselle lifted her hand in a half wave. “Hey there,” she greeted, her tone cheerful but softer than usual. Turning to look at the piece of art in front of her, she figured it was probably better to start off the conversation with a safe topic rather than diving right into asking why the stranger seemed so upset. “This is a beautiful piece, isn’t it? The colors are so vibrant and bright. Almost makes you wish you could just crawl inside it and be surrounded by that happiness forever, huh?” Not very subtle, but considering Giselle normally would have outright blurted why are you so sad, this way of questioning was much better.

The museum was where Elaine would spend all of her free time if she didn’t work there. One might think she would eventually grow tired of staring at the same paintings all day, bored of talking about the meanings she saw behind strokes of color, but it was one of the things she enjoyed most. When she talked about art, sometimes, people listened. It was a slow day, no paperwork to do, no tours to give, nothing to clean, and Elaine found herself entranced by one of the pieces, nothing unusual for her. “Hello,” she turned to offer a wave and polite smile to the other woman, pulled out of her distraction. Time to be professional, for as long as she could muster it. Today was an especially sad day. Why, Elaine wasn’t sure. It just was. “It is. You can tell when an artist achieves the tone they’re going for, this is a perfect example. I can’t imagine how it would feel to live in the world they’ve captured.”

     It was always nice to take a break from the hustle and bustle of a busy life and spend some time with herself, just drinking in some beautiful sights and reflecting. Whether that was in nature or in an art museum, Minnie always found herself refreshed and inspired after such a trip, so here she was in the Mewni Museum and Art Gallery. Staring up at a softly colored impressionist painting on the wall, she gave a quiet, thoughtful hum and turned to speak softly to the woman nearby, “I wish I could paint like this. Art is so…transportive. What do you think of this piece?”

Elaine loved her job; sure, she’d rather be one of the artists hanging paintings on the wall but there wasn’t a more fitting place for her to spend all of her time on the clock. Though giving tours wasn’t her cup of tea, as long as those could be avoided. “That is one of my favorites,” she spoke honestly, turning her eyes to the piece Minnie was pointing out, “and one of the more underrated. It’s one of those pieces that I look at, and I can tell someone truly put their entire soul on display, every empty piece of it. It feels like they’re screaming ‘look at me, I’m right here’, while people continue to walk past, distracted by bright colors and more obvious beauty they don’t have to dwell over to understand.”

His eyebrow rose even higher at the comment of how her foot always does dry in the end, as if this was a common occurance for the woman. “Do you step into puddles often? Cause if so, you do know there’s this thing called rainboots you could wear instead,” he suggests, partily just trying to be funny but also dead serious as well. If he found himself getting his socks wet on the regular, Flynn would certainly be rocking some rainboots every day to prevent it. “Hey, that doesn’t sound like a waste of a day. Painting is great.”

“Mm, no... perhaps I should get a pair... stop the disaster before it happens.” While she wouldn’t say often, she did seem to step in puddles more often than the normal person, only because she didn’t look where she was going. “I suppose you’re right, painting is never a waste of time.” Practice made perfect, and maybe if she could become perfect, she could have a piece good enough to showcase one day. Then she would be happy. Or at least... accomplished. “Are you a painter, too?”

“Nice to meet you as well,” she echoes back, genuinely meaning it. Despite the fact that Helen had come out tonight specifically in look of potential crushes her daughter might hold, it was always nice to meet someone new closer to her own age. Outside of the occasional visits with her old friends and working alongside fellow Order members, Helen didn’t often find herself spending much time with others in her age range. Since having kids, she’s found most of her time has always gone to them and being surrounded by all of their friends. “You aren’t a buzzkill at all. Perhaps we could take these drinks out to the patio, though? It doesn’t look quite as crowded out there right now. And the fresh air may do you some good.”

It was surprising someone beyond her friends would hold a conversation with her for this long. Elaine knew she could kill the vibe, it was genuinely shocking to her when someone seemed interested in an interaction. “Oh, are you sure? I don’t want to burden you,” she found herself saying before she really thought about it, then mentally kicking herself. If someone was trying to be friendly, maybe she should just go along with it for once. “The patio would be nice. I’ve never been out there before, is it big?”

Nodding slowly, Flynn couldn’t help like maybe he hadn’t been as helpful as he could have been. Then again, how was he supposed to know the lady would take his joking advice to go back to bed seriously? And was it really all that big of a deal if she did? He didn’t know her life - maybe she’d be fine sleeping another day away. “Oh, uh, I’m Flynn,” he introduces himself, raising a hand in an awkward half wave. “Sorry about the sock again - but hey, it gave you an excuse to go home, so I guess you can’t be too mad.”

“Nice to meet you,” Elaine offered halfheartedly. Perhaps there were better circumstances, but there were also worse. She might not have been a social butterfly, but it was still nice to talk to someone other than her coworkers on occasion. “Oh, it’s alright. It’ll dry. Always does.” His comment perked her up a bit. “You’re right. Go home, paint a picture, have a cup of tea and curl up under my covers. There’s always tomorrow to try again.”
