In what order should I tackle my exam questions?

You should actually save the multiple choice questions, the true/false statement questions and word associations for the last- you want to do an initial skim, check your essay/long answer questions first, then short questions, especially if you are an last-minute revisionist or an study crammer. Then you probably should focus on the easier questions and keep the medium and long answer questions for the last. It is always IMPORTANT to skip any questions you are ‘stuck’ on in order to fill out the questions you can answer. Give your question no longer than five minutes- the time you have for your exam is limited. Sometimes, taking a hit on an question could mean superior score than if you had persisted, as you would have time to answer the other questions properly.  If you finish early, do not forget to check your answers. Perhaps in doing so an memory will trigger and you may change one of your answers, or improve an answer, as well as catching any questions you may have missed during the initial skim. I have provided below true tested-and-tried strategies to avoid drawing an blank, or what to do if you’re stuck on an question.

Multiple choice questions:

If you don’t know the answer right away, you can:

Figure out the answer by eliminating the wrong answer, narrowing down your choices. Even if you couldn’t figure it out, by eliminating two confirmed ‘wrong answer’ on four possible choices, you have 1/2 chances at guessing the right answer.

If you hesitate between two answers, mark them, put an question mark next to the question, and come back to them later to analyze it. The question mark is to provide an visual cue to catch your eye- don’t forget to erase it once you’ve picked an answer!

Try to work the question backwards. If the question is: By using Z to do X, you will get: a) Y b) S c) T, reword the question as: Y is made from which combination?

Skim the other questions. Sometimes the answer to a multiple choice question can be found inside another question!

Short answer questions:

The key here is not to waste time, unless it is a question you can answer in an single short sentence. Quickly dot down key words associated with the answer in the sides or near the question. Then you can come back later and expand. If you draw an blank, you can:
