The smooth feeling of the cold sheets welcomed you as you finally awoke. Although it wasn’t the softest mattress, it did the job. The warm morning sunlight peered in through the small openings of your shutters, the white paint peeling off the old wood. You stared as small dust particles danced in the light as you wondered about the night before. For a moment, you felt lost in this dream. Happy and content remembering the events from the previous night, and now awoke to reality. The warm light from the window grew cold as the morning fog rolled in from the shores. They probably left the island already.
Thinking about the night before, you couldn’t remember whether or not you said “goodbye”. Because honestly, you never wanted to say it. The night was so lively after the crew comforted you, that you couldn’t see yourself coming to terms with parting from them. You smiled remembering the night before, but the sight that seemed most memorable was Zoro’s intense gaze and smile.
As the night came closer towards its end, the memories became more foggy. You completely lost count of how many drinks you had but it was hard to stop considering how tasty Sanji’s drinks were. But you did hold one faint memory when the booze began to ware off as most of the crew mates left to their ship. Sanji had left to walk with the girls after cleaning and reorganizing the bar for you after assuming that Zoro was already gone, but found him fast asleep by the steps of the building and decided to leave him there.
As you locked up for the night, the sight of Zoro scared you as the jangling of your keys woke him.
“Jesus, how do you manage sleeping wherever you are?!”
He couldn’t respond, grumbling from his hungover state. You sighed. “Don’t tell me you’re gonna get lost on your way back to the ship.”
“Tsk, why is it any of your business?”
“This isn’t the safest town to be in.”
He sat for a moment, looking down at the ground but for once it seemed he wasn’t focused on what he was viewing. He still had the glow from drinking that night as he sat in silence. Finally he spoke. “Do you want me to walk you back to your place then?”
You were shocked by his offer, but reason had completely left you at this point.
The both of you walked side by side on his request. “I just.” He hiccuped, “want to make sure you don’t get lost.” Sure.
Walking together you both brushed arms but paid no mind. Fortunately, the moonlight illuminated the path. Most buildings were quiet as all the blinds were closed and not a single candle light was on. Nothing was heard but the occasional light snoring and the muffled yells from the town’s couples. The atmosphere of the night and your dazed state made you almost too comfortable.
“Do you really think… Luffy will become King of the Pirates?”
Zoro was silent for a moment, focused on the dirt road.
“You have seen his attitude, his passion.” He turned to focus on you. “Everyone on our crew is strong, he wouldn’t be able to achieve his goal without any of us. But who am I to doubt his strength? A first mate must always have faith in their captain. None of us would be here if we didn’t.”
You slightly frowned. “I guess, if that is really everyone’s goal. … I’m just worried.”
Zoro’s gaze stayed focused with his mouth shut, asking for you to continue.
“I don’t want to see any of you hurt. It’s a long and harsh journey.”
Zoro’s gaze softened, “You can be really sweet sometimes.”
You looked back at him with a blush, causing him to realize the words that had just come out of his mouth. Zoro let his guard down too much when he was drinking. He immediately broke eye contact and silenced himself for the rest of the walk.
The both of you eventually arrived to the front door of your small apartment complex as the elderly woman at the front desk stared. She joked, “Been a while since you brought a man back, huh? I almost assumed you switched teams based on the rumors.” You widened your eyes and blushed at her audacity, unable to make eye contact with Zoro who simply smiled and nodded to the elderly woman. The tenant next to her laughed, “Hey, us men love a team player!”. They both roared as you slowly moved away. Walking up the stairs to your suite, you cleared your throat. “Sorry about that, please don’t tell anyone.” Zoro only playfully hummed in response.
As you unlocked the door he finally spoke. “Are you going to be okay?”
You looked back and the both of you stared at each other for a moment. “Well.” You sighed. “I’ve survived this long.”
He focused on you for a moment, however, it seemed like there was nothing he was searching for behind his gaze. No suspicion or judgement. But a moment of vulnerability as he took in your gaze and all the features he admired. His gazed moved from you eyes, to your lashes, and to the shape of your nose. For the first time, you noticed how deep brown his eye was. You always admired how deep and caring brown eyes appeared when looking up close. Finally, he closed his eye and bowed his head. “Sleep well.” And he was gone, … just like that.
———
You rubbed your face in an attempt to wake up and pulled the sheets off to be met with the cold morning breeze. Unfortunately your cheap apartment room had no insolation, so you constantly had to find ways to stay warm or cool when the seasons changed. Rubbing your hands together you fumbled through your piles of clothes to find a sweater and tried to get your mind off from the previous night. As you put it on you caught a glimpse of something from the corner of your eye. You tried your best to stay still before moving quickly to look at your door, but saw nothing but a few fallen cherry blossom petals. You reached over and picked them up. That’s weird, we don’t have those sort of trees on this island.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the other side of the door which caused you to jump. Being cautious about who it may be, you stayed quiet until they spoke.
“Good morning, Y/N. It’s Robin.”
You sighed in relief and fixed your hair as best as you could before opening the door. Robin met you with a kind smile that always complimented her long hair and facial structure.
“How are you?” She asked warmly, you were surprised thinking they had left already.
“I’m okay.”
“May I come in?” She lifted a picnic basket in her hand. “Sanji made this for us.”
Oh, wow. Why?
“Sure, but… my room is a little messy.” You nervously laughed. “Sorry about that.”
All Robin did was laugh in response as she walked in, settling herself on your makeshift desk.
“I don’t mean to alarm you, but I thought you should know.” You turned to Robin surprised.
“I overheard the whole thing last night.”
A blush came over your face and before you could speak she interrupted you.
“I didn’t mean to disrespect your privacy, I was just concerned. My power also allows me to gather information from afar, I’m sorry.”
You sighed, “It’s okay.”
“I can’t help but understand where Zoro was coming from, but I also understand what it’s like to try to solve everything on your own.”
You shifted in discomfort.
“I had also thought that suffering on my own was a greater fate than to be a burden to others.” Robin turned to smile at you. “But, it’s okay to ask for help when you need it.”
You both stayed in silence while eating, it was hard to top off a conversation from what she said. After finishing, Robin stood up and spoke before closing the door behind herself. “Our crew will stay docked for the next week, … in the meantime, you can make up your mind before we leave.” She left with a smile. Although the offer confused you, you were happy to hear that you will see them all soon again. Suddenly, the thought of Zoro from the night before came to your mind, but you quickly shook it off. You remember placing trust in attractive pirates before and it never ended well. You didn’t want to entertain the thought of making that mistake again.

You could practically hear nothing but your heartbeat. It was so silent for a moment in the bar that for once, the frayed floors didn’t even creak. You tried to control your shaking but you were unable to stop the tears from coming. The other crew mates made their way to you, but the most insistent to help happened to be Sanji. Zoro was frozen in the moment, not knowing how to react but able to control his calm expression. Sanji laid a hand on your other shoulder.
“What happened?” For the first time, he addressed you in a calm manner as Nami tried to shove him off.
“Don’t just crowd her, give the girl some space!” Nami glared as everyone took a step back, except for Zoro.
Zoro finally opened his mouth with a monotone voice. “Hey-“
Sanji grabbed onto his arm. “How are you supposed to council her, now? This was your fault!”
Zoro forcefully released himself from Sanji’s grip while glaring. “And, what do you know?!”
“Well, then?! Open your goddamn mouth and tell us! What did you do?!”
Zoro looked to you, fixing his gaze and waited. Finally looking back to Zoro, somehow your thoughts were silenced. His gaze was almost calming, even if it was focused there was a small hint - almost an ember - of his humanity displayed before you. Behind his fixed expression was something of concern and mutual vulnerability.
“Well?! What did you fucking say to her?!” Sanji barked.
It was almost as though his words ran straight past Zoro. He paid no mind, continuing to examine your face. And in the moment, it struck you. All your worries about being vulnerable before the crew completely distracted you from what Zoro was asking of you.
You took a hitched breath before lowering your gaze. You were able to come to a decision. Finally, you slightly shook your head and that was all he needed.
“Nothing.” He maintained his straight expression.
“Huh?!” Sanji and Nami yelled in unison.
Zoro glanced back to them both. “I told her nothing. She was just telling me about how other customers have treated her.”
“Really?!” Everyone almost yelled out of shock, except for Robin of course, who focused her gaze between you and Zoro.
“WHO HURT YOU?!” Luffy’s scream almost popped your eardrums.
“How could anyone dare?!” Franky stepped forward.
Everyone in the crew began to drunkenly ramble about how they were going to hurt those who hurt you. Their interrogation almost became too much. Even Nami’s angry attitude towards those she has never even come across with felt unbearable but incredibly caring in the moment. You didn’t know if you grew emotional from their kindness or from your vulnerability. All you could do was shake your head. Opening up would only make things more embarrassing. But you were thankful that Zoro respected your wish, no matter how much he wanted to help you, he valued your choice most of all.
“Hey!” Zoro interrupted. “Can’t you see she’s overwhelmed?”
The bar grew silent again.
“We just want to help her!” Yelled Nami.
“Look at her!” Zoro pointed in your direction. “She’s crying even more, stop bombarding her. She can’t even talk.”
You sniffled as you finally found the courage to wipe your tears. “I’m sorry I caused such a scene.” Was all you could manage from your strained throat.
Robin slowly moved behind the bar top and poured you a glass of water. She spoke as she gently placed it in your hands. “There’s nothing to apologize for.” Her kind smile calmed you. “Now, Sanji?” The curly-browed man perked up at the sound of his name coming from her.
“Do you mind getting behind the bar? She might need some rest for now.”
“Of course, Robin!” He said with a smile and a blush. And although you did find him a bit annoying, you found the gesture very heartwarming. Nami took your arm and lead you to the table as the rest of the crew joined.
They spoke to you about their journeys thus far and each of their aspirations. The strength of their bond became more evident now that you participated in their conversation. The crew members congratulated each other, joked with each other, and even reenacted their journeys in a comical manner for you. The longer the conversation went, the more you found yourself laughing and smiling, making mental notes of not being able to remember the last time you’ve smiled this much in one night. But soon, you paid no mind to your actions. You felt as though - for the first time - you weren’t being judged for the way you snorted when you laughed too hard. Or the way your smile showed some of your crooked teeth. Or the way your nose crinkled as you giggled. And, unbeknown to you, Zoro was admiring all of these features as his eyes were almost entirely on you for the rest of the night.

also absolutely hate when people say "this is set a million years from now and there's still racism and homophobia? #problematic" and then you read it and it's a scathing and concise yet meticulous examination of our current views on race and gender and sexuality. you don't understand what the point of science fiction is. escapism is not the pinnacle of the written form that all genre fiction should aspire to. you're annoying me
the fantastical setting allows for the writer to make our current day issues larger than life and therefore more easily examined and deconstructed. in genre fiction fantasy is often used as a microscope and through it we can try to better understand what's gone so wrong with us in the modern day, we can try to point to the cancer in the cells. it's natural to want to escape sometimes (i love a good romcom for example) but you do need to confront a mirror every once in a while. the solution to your pain is not to bury your head in squeecore. sorry i said squeecore

Walking towards the bar with Zoro was nothing but frustrating. He spent most of the time staying quiet, which made it hard to tell whether or not he was following or completely lost. Countless times you had to turn around, only to find the palms and grass behind you. You were surprised to find him a few times having walked far off the path, to only inquire him if he was lost again. Finally reaching closer to the bar, you turned back to meet his intense gaze again.
“Why do you keep turning around?” He deadpanned. Upset with his aloof nature you finally talked back.
“You keep getting lost, what do you expect me to do?”
“I know where I’m going!” He raised his voice while lifting his shoulders.
“Do you?” Your gaze pierced through him for the first time.
“Yeah!”
You shrugged. “Okay, then.” Your calm nature put him off guard as you stepped off the path and gestured to the rest. “Go ahead.” You said through a smile.
He stepped back for a moment, only to then peer around aimlessly. He fidgeted with the strands of his swords. “Tsk.” And like the moron he is, he turned completely around and began walking down the opposite direction again.
“Idiot!”
Zoro turned around in anger. And before he could open his mouth you stopped him.
“Walk in front of me, then. Honestly, how hard is it?”
“Why are you in such a hurry?!” His anger boiling.
“The faster I get to the bar, the faster you can get your sorry ass drunk and my day will be done.”
“Well, it’s not my fault you hate your job.” He deadpanned. The fucking audacity of this guy. You moved your way closer to him.
“You really think just because you’re some big shot pirate you can talk that way to people!?” You pointed and poked at his chest.
He smirked, the moonlight peeking through the palm leaves accenting his features. “So, you think I’m a big shot, huh?”
You rolled your eyes, turning around to hide your smile but it definitely came through in your laugh. “Ha! Let’s go, it’s getting late.”
———
Somehow you both made it to the bar without arguing any further.
“Hey! There he is!” Ussopp yelled. Chopper ran up to Zoro cheerfully and hugged his leg. He peered down softly, as everyone turned their attention back to their conversations. Zoro made his way to the bar, wobbling carefully as Chopper still had a death grip on him. Seeing the way the rest of the crew mates treated him made you smile, especially at the sight of his biased and rare kindness towards Chopper. You followed towards the bar, but was swiftly interrupted by Sanji. Brook happened to still be performing on the bar’s piano.
“Y/N, you’re back!” He squealed. “Now, you can dance with me?-“
“She has to serve me first.” Zoro’s eye focused on Sanji but a twinge of anger seemed to linger in his tone.
“She can serve you after! Y/N’s probably tired from being around you already!”
“Tsk” Zoro made his way to Sanji as Chopper hopped off his leg. Zoro grabbed Sanji by the collar. “She doesn’t even want to dance with you, leave her alone and let her do her job!”
Not wanting a fight to break out and clean up after, you prepared yourself for an embarrassing display. “Sanji, I really want to make sure everyone is happy, I promise to dance with you all night later.” You put on an embarrassing blush while trying your best to appear innocent. Sanji’s heart eyes appeared again, “Wow! Such a kind woman! Of course!” He smiled and turned to glare at Zoro before walking back to Robin.
You sighed out of embarrassment, and looked to find Zoro glancing at you.
He smirked and raised a brow. “A bartender and an actress, too?”
You laughed in response as you both turned back to the bar.
———
Unsurprisingly, all the samurai wanted was sake, which you were able to provide. He happened to really enjoy the island’s array of sake, whether or not it was cheap. As time went on, he came to enjoy himself. Chatting with the other crew mates as they came and went from the bar top. However, he spent most of his time talking with you. And to be honest, you really enjoyed your conversations. He went on about his passion for swords, pointing to the one displayed above the bottles. He talked about the history of swords, and even though it wasn’t really a subject you enjoyed, you couldn’t help but find his rambling and smiling admirable. But when he asked you about your passions, you were caught off guard.
“Well, I’ve been on this island my entire life. We don’t offer much but a resting spot for pirates.”
He lowered his bottle and raised a brow. The glow from his drunken state placing a pink flush. “Well, is there anything you want in life?”
You sighed, “Honestly, all I’ve ever wanted was to get off this island. … It’s unbearable living here.”
“How? At least, it seems you’re doing okay.”
You leaned against the counter, coming closer to him.
“We don’t have much peace here, pirates are always causing a ruckus. But, I think it also comes from jealousy.” You peered across the bottles and made your gaze back to him.
He swirled the booze in his bottle before taking another drink. “Why, exactly?”
“Every day, I get ready, work in the bar. Harassed by the men constantly, having to clean up their mess. And then, I go home. That’s it.” You shrugged now looking down at the frayed, wooden floor. You didn’t enjoy being vulnerable with others, especially pirate customers. But a part of you felt safe with him.
“Y/N.” He said softly. You turned back, surprised by his tone. “We can get you off this island.”
You laughed, “And what? Become a pirate?”
His expression remained serious. “It’s up to you what you want to do. Become a pirate or not, we can get you out of here. Find you a safe place to stay.”
Your eyes widened. “What do you mean?”
“Luffy has always helped everyone he’s come across with. I doubt he will be phased by your request-“
“No, I just met you all. Why is my suffering any of your business? I can’t just ask you all for help.”
He turned his gaze back to his bottle. “Like I said. It’s up to you. But if you’re suffering it’s your responsibility to act.”
“Do you really think I can just leave everything behind?”
“That’s what I did. And everyone else on this crew.”
You couldn’t find the words. For someone to do that, they must have really been suffering. Seeing the whole crew in the bar, you assumed they were all happy, but to have gotten this far to the New World they must have encountered many struggles.
“I haven’t known you for that long but I can tell you are strong, and that’s all that matters. Just like us, you can leave and start anew.”
Hearing those words from him made you blush, but also ripped at all your fears. You couldn’t help but turn away from him as your eyes watered. Why did I have to open up to him? I don’t even know him and now I’m going to cry in front of all these other people I admire.
Nami turned her attention to you, her glow evident on her face as she broke away from the conversation. Instead of causing a scene she walked up to the bar top and placed a hand on your shoulder.
“Hey, are you okay?” Her kind actions only made your eyes water even more and Zoro was shocked as you turned to face him again. He could only widen his eyes.
“What the hell did you do, Zoro!?”
The whole crew turned their attention back to you, Brook even stopped playing.

Standing on the edge of the island always brought you back to your senses. A little dazed from the booze, sinking your toes in the cold sand while smelling the salted water of the ocean as it splashed always brought you to peace, drowning out the thoughts that circled your mind.
“I can’t wait to get off this fucking island.” Something you always told yourself but never had the money or courage to do. Being a bartender had some of its perks, but it came with its moments. Moments where you wished men weren’t such disgusting animals. Moments you wished your parents knew better than to bring you to this horrible island. Moments where you wished you could’ve run away when you had the chance-
“Y/N? … Y/N?! … Hey, broad! Where’d you go?”
You knew who’s voice it was when you were being addressed with insults. Your boss allowed little to no breaks, and when you didn’t arrive on time, he always knew where to find you. You took the last puff from your cigarette, snuffing it in the sand while watching the embers slowly die out. Your back hurt from the long day so you made sure to kneel. Off to the side, you caught a glance of a green-haired man, walking aimlessly across the sand, but you paid no mind.
“Hey, skank! More pirates arrived!”
Hearing the boss’s boots hit the sand you tried to make the kindest face you could when turning to look back at him, but your eyes still pierced through him every time he called you that word. You were tired of serving pirates, always never knowing their boundaries or proper respect. Your boss always made sure you were the one serving when pirates came by because you happened to be the only female bartender. However, you were always left to clean up their mess. But the worst part came when the men were drunk and trying to shoot their shot. You wouldn’t mind if they were attractive, but most happened to be old, disheveled men who had never seen soap in their lives.
Turning back to the shop, your boss retreated to the mainland with you.
“Make sure you treat these ones well. And don’t you dare talk back to them like the others!” He said, losing his footing.
“What’s different with them?”
“Didn’t I tell you to stop asking questions?”
You turned your gaze back to the bar, refusing to start a fight. They must be some big shots then, might as well make a good tip.
———
The New World always brought surprises. But this happened to be the biggest one yet for you. Your boss had shut down the whole bar for the Straw Hat crew. Walking through the swinging doors, you were shocked to find Monkey D Luffy, eating and laughing right next to his wanted poster plastered right behind him. A redhead was seated across from him with a death glare written all over her face. She did not seem happy but hopefully a drink from you might cheer her up. Before introducing yourself from the distracted crew, a blond haired man with a ridiculous curly eyebrow blushed at the sight of you and immediately charged toward you. Your eyes widen and the only way of defense came to mind.
You swung your bag and made direct contact with his face. His heart eyes disappeared as he skidded across the floor. A new kind of shock came over you as you ran over to him.
“Oh shi-, what was I thinking?! I am so sorry-“. Leaning to help him back up you were surprised to not be met with hostility. Rather, you were met with laughter coming from the crew.
“Serves him right! Ha!” You turned to see a long-nosed man laughing along with an oddly small dog? Cat? Raccoon? Oh, well. That didn’t matter at the moment. What mattered was whether or not you had angered the blond-haired man, even if your boss wasn’t present. As you turned your attention back towards him, he lit up at the sight of your hand and the blush somehow appeared again, but you weren’t sure if it was flattery or the massive hit he took to the face.
“Don’t you worry, Miss! I would never be offended by a beautiful woman like you!” He cooed.
You sighed from half relief and half second-hand embarrassment. But none the less you helped him up and everyone was happy.
“What’s your name, girl.” Asked the cyborg.
Upon instinct you straighten your posture and bowed with your head. “I’m Y/N, wonderful to meet you all.”
“Awww” Came from both girls seated beside him, you blushed in response trying your best to hide it. And fortunately, they all kindly introduced themselves. However, it seemed like someone was missing. You saw every member from the wanted posters but none seemed to resemble the swordsman.
———
Somehow, serving these pirates was rather fun, you can’t seem to remember the last time you had this much fun on the job, none the less in your social life. All happened to be kind, and even though Sanji tried to make advances and asked if you offered other services, the women were rather pretty and praised you while keeping Sanji away from the bar. Thank God.
Occasionally, members would ask each other about the whereabouts of “Zoro.”
“Who’s Zoro? A friend of your’s?” You asked Luffy.
“Yup! And he’s our first mate, too.” He smiled. “But he always gets lost.”
“Oh! Does he have green-hair?”
“Yeah! Why? Have you seen him?!”
“Yes, I think I saw him on the beach.” You nodded.
“Oh great! So you can go get him for us-!“
Nami pulled on his face, and you discovered the rumors happened to be true. He really was a man made out of rubber.
“You can’t just ask someone to go find him for you!” Her happy boozed daze seemed to have run its course in that instant.
“No, really. It’s okay. I can go once I’ve finished your drinks.” Nami and Luffy lowered their guard. “You guys seem to be having a good time and I know the island.”
Robin clapped her hands together as she smiled. “That would be wonderful. Thank you.”
———
Your feet shuffled on the sand and smiled, remembering the kind words of the crew. You’ve never met such kind pirates. Most would call you a skank when you turned town their advances. Some would throw their drinks your way. But these pirates, no. People. Happened to be different. Brook even performed a song for you.
You stopped to scan the beach. The looming darkness above the waves would bring some fear, but it brought you peace.
A fleeting thought even came to your mind. What if? … What if I joined them?
You immediately shook your head. You hated pirates. They always brought chaos to the shores. You could never-
The thoughts were interrupted by some obnoxious snoring. Loud and harsh. Who snores like that?
Turning around you found a green-haired man, wearing clothing that resembled a samurai. Somehow he was sleeping with three swords still strapped to his body.
You approached as cautiously as you could. Finally finding the courage to kneel to wake him.
“Excuse me?” You whispered. … Nothing.
“Excuse me?” You repeated, raising your volume again. Still nothing. Even though his snoring was obnoxious and he reeked of cheap sake, his features were striking. You couldn’t deny it. His scar and earrings only added to his charm. Finally, you nudged him awake. And the death glare that came from his only eye caused you to jump back. He immediately softened his gaze, sensing no danger but remained quiet. For sometime, all that could be heard was the slow lapping of the waves the the rustling leaves of the palms.
You cleared your throat, breaking eye contact. “Your crew is looking for you back at the bar.”
His gaze still stayed glued to you, unsure if you found it attractive or intimidating.
“What’s your name?” He said in a soft tone as his arms were still folded behind his head.
“Y/N.” You tried to glance at anything but his face.
He sighed. “Good, seems like they’re having fun.” He pushed himself up with a grunt, brushing off the sand from his clothes and ensuring that no sand damaged his weapons. “Can you lead the way?” He turned back to gaze at you. Upon nodding while looking down at the sand you were surprised to see his hand before you.
You looked up, almost waiting for approval. It was hard to read what exactly was on his mind. He seemed to always keep a straight face but for some reason, he smirked. “I don’t bite.” You hesitantly took his hand as he helped you up. “Thank you.” All he did was nod in response as you both turned towards the bar.

i bet zoro has done that thing like where dogs try to carry a stick through a doorway but with his sword still in his mouth. how many doorways has this man damaged. he swings his head to look at something and the crew has to duck. i think if he tried hard enough he could hold two swords in his mouth for maximum effectiveness and just swing his head back and forth to attack. no one would be able to touch him hes a walking lawn mower
