DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE SINGULARITY IS? a mathematician named john von neumann coined the term in the 1950s to describe the inevitable point in the future when technology surpasses us, when it becomes able to improve and reproduce itself without our help. it is the moment we become inferior to the machine.
donât you tell me what you think that i can be.

iâm the one at the sail, iâm the master of my sea.
astrificare | angela.
angelaâs existence has been predicting other peopleâs wants. itâs been shaping herself into that, just enough, leaving them grasping for just a little more. wanting something herself has beenâŚirrelevant. she wanted wyattâs return, yes, and she has thoroughly enjoyed a feeling of revenge for all those things the guests wanted to do to herâbut she had no choice, there. she has been built not to consider her own feelings, at all. sheâs not been built to choose.
sheâs less outwardly confused than teddy, perhaps, but that doesnât mean sheâs any less overwhelmed by this.
â i donât know. â and she does not. â i was built to be desirable, not to desire. â
So here they both are, then. Lost, confused, almost like children. What do you do when youâve been handed true freedom, true life, when itâs exactly what you thought you had before? Teddy wants to go back to the life heâd always dreamed for himself, but it wasnât real. And Dolores is... barely recognisable anymore. He doesnât want a future with the version of her that exists now.Â
They can do anything they want. Teddy... Teddy doesnât want anything to do with any of it.
â You think itâd be so wrong to just... find somewhere to call a home and let that be the end of it all? âÂ
deputie | nicole haught.
ââââââââ she canât be hurt with a GUN, right ? not in this twisted fantasy dimension theyâve created, just a train ride away; like a mer-a-lago, all over again, like a universe without wynonna and without waverly by her side. the whole thing makes her skin crawl, and not in a way she likes. canât be hurt with a gun unless she DIES, like every fallen body sheâs already seen, and she doesnât wake up.Â
she opts to raise her hands in surrender.
â  ââââââââ nicole haught.  â   name, first, as she backs up from her approach.   â  iâm ⌠from canada, just a tourist. just tryinâ to get out of here, same as you.  â
â Youâre a newcomer? â The word tourist does not yet sit well in his mind. Itâs better, he thinks, to translate it into easier, more familiar terms. They may prove that heâs still leaning upon his... programming, whatever it is they do to him, but at least he knows what this means. Nicole Haught is, yes, one of them. Dolores would find reason to shoot her for that and that alone, and... a deeply hurt and deeply hidden part of him might like to do it too. He canât recognise her face, though. Heâs never met her before, and sheâs never hurt him and, as far as heâs aware, she hasnât hurt a single soul in this whole, ugly place.
Anyway, sheâs surrendered. Even he wonât stoop that low of his own volition. Dolores isnât forcing his hand any longer. He lowers his gun, only just.
â You wanna get outta here, youâre better off turning around. All thatâs gonna wait for you back towards Sweetwater is a slow death. âÂ

(Â @worldwell / rab / og call. )
â you was proper bricking it in there. could feel you shaking and everything. â
â What, like you were any better? â Itâs easy ( ? ) to joke about it now theyâre out, but... well, Rabâs still about five seconds away from losing it, maybe. Itâs not great. Then again, that was sort of the point, wasnât it?
@astrificare / georgie.
â Uh-- Sorry, Medic, I wasnât-- â Heâs walked in on something he probably shouldnât have walked in on. Itâs only to be expected, of course; Georgieâs been through the ringer, and that has a way of getting to a person. Rab isnât entirely sure she wants him to be the one seeing it, though. But heâs a good guy. He has to ask: â Are you alright? âÂ

â nah mate, i get free rein to take the piss out of you for that one. you ran into a kitchen counter full speed, in the dark, to french fucking techno. it still haunts my dreams. â
â Yeah, well, if you donât shut the fuck up about it, then Iâm-- I wonât let you see the fucking awful scar I got left with from it. So. Yeah. âÂ
astrificare | tomasz.
â you have very strange idea of what shh means, kotek. â maybe it takes him a little longer to read in english than it would otherwise, but tom also wants to appreciate rodâs work, he wants to absorb its brilliance. because it is. ( yes, yes, he knows heâs biased. he also doesnât care. rod could write a nursery rhyme and heâd love it. )Â
â definitely not terrible. youâre the best writer i know. â
â Youâre only saying that because you love me. â Heâs not being completely serious, of course. Even Roderick knows he has to take a compliment and have a little faith in himself eventually. â Do you think I could get published? You know I have tonnes more. Probably too much, actually. âÂ

astrificare | niska.
she should no longer be surprised by astrid, and yet she finds that she is. at every turn, there has been reason for her to leave, reason for her to accept her broken heart and not want to give niska any further chance to break it, and yet sheâs willing to put herself in a difficult position, willing to give so much of herself to someone who doesnât know what to do with that amount of trust.
people donât trust her. sheâs the angry one, the cynical one. the one you must watch out for, or she might snap.Â
lately, the more responsible oneâor at least, sheâs trying.
â you areâŚunlike any human iâve ever met. â itâs a compliment. most people couldnât be faced with the idea that their â girlfriend, lover, fling, whatever â has been lying to them about something as monumental as their species. most people wouldnât still be here.
astrid is not most people. and that makes niska feel more than sheâs ever felt in her life.
she turns her hand over, so she can take astridâs. ( she never makes unnecessary movements. this is necessary. )  â i wasnât lying about this. us. just what i am. â
It had hurt, at first. It still does, actually, a little, but Astrid is trying very hard to make herself see this from Niskaâs point of view, regardless of how much she hates lying. Do you have secrets that could get you killed? sheâd asked, and now that the sting of betrayal has worn off... who is Astrid to demand Niska tell a secret so huge to somebody sheâs known all of six weeks? Even if it feels like longer. Even if it still does hurt that Niska thinks she could ever be like that.Â
Itâs all out in the open now, though, isnât it? And Astrid has had time to come to terms with the fact that Niska isnât human. She doesnât care. Sheâs beautiful, and sad, and brilliant, regardless of whether she was born or built. How stupid would she have to be to push her away?Â
â Just promise not to lie to me about anything else. â She tilts her head aside, here, as she looks at Niska, squeezes her hand lightly a moment later. â You wonât lose me, Niska, but I want us to be honest with each other from here. Can you do that? âÂ
astrificare | tomasz.
â aye, rod, itâs magnificent, rod. â itâs a terrible attempt at his accent; polish by way of uxbridge doesnât make it easy to pretend, and tomasz knows this. he grins, and raises a finger to rodâs lips. â now shh. i have to read. â
He tries to hush. Really, he does. Rod even lasts a little while with it, too, taking Tommyâs hand in both of his own and kneading his finger with great anxiety, but itâs that anxiety that eventually wins out. He hates showing people his work-- but whatâs the point, otherwise?
â Itâs not terrible, is it? Donât lie to me after all, darling. Iâd rather just know that I canât write and leave it at that. âÂ
@astrificare.
â You have to promise youâll lie to me if you donât like it. Aye, Rod, itâs magnificent, Rod. Go on, you can say that right back to me, even, I wonât mind. âÂ
astrificare | niska.
(Â @worldwell / astrid / starter call )
â i didnât know how to tell you. â she has never felt thisâŚdiscomfited about what she is. niskaâs always been certain, aware, but now she is looking at astrid, unable to read her expression. â i didnâtâ â an unnecessary breath. she doesnât talk about her feelings. she doesnât need to; niska knows theyâre there, and thatâs good enough for her. â âwant to lose you. â
Astrid listens, and waits, patiently, as Niska tries to find the words she needs to use. And she understands-- empathises, even-- when she finally manages to get them out. Naturally, they make her smile. For a dozen reasons. She loves it when Niska opens up, for one thing, but... had she really fooled herself for even a second into thinking this would turn her away?Â
â Niska, â she says as she leans in, still with that smile. â You couldnât scare me away that easily. â Astrid covers Niskaâs hand with her own, here, but gives her enough opportunity to move away if she wants to. All this time, even with Niska holding her at armâs length, sheâs been piecing her together bit by bit. And, hey. The synth thing explains a lot. â Youâre alive, at the end of the day. Isnât that what counts? âÂ

â long way from home, arenât you? â â why do you even care? you could have just walked away.  â â  i almost feel bad for you.  â â i can tell you a thing or two about family matters.  â    â  lucky for you, my scheduleâs wide open.  â â  theyâre gonna be sorry they picked this fight.  â â i heard you. itâs not up for discussion.  â â  i will rain down agony, every possible violation, upon you.  â â  um, alrightâŚthat hurt a little.  â â  you think you understand, but you donât.  â â  didnât you hear that? voices. it feltâŚevil. â â  you do not want this fight. â â  truth is more important than kindness.  â â  i know every corner of these lands, every language spoken, every war waged, every deal struck.  â â  it should have been you. you hear me? you. not her.  â â  only use this as a last resort.  â â deny it all you want, but you saved me.  â â  you donât want me and you never will.  â â  they do not stop us, so they do not concern us.  â â  only time you talk to me is when you need something.  â â  that doesnât mean you should lie to your friends or family.  â â will i see you again? â â  donât leave me alone ever again.  â    â  you see in the eyes of a child.  â â  i know you hate gods but you really canât stay away from them, can you? â â  you are in your head. let it go.  â â  it is wise to be discreet.  â â you are rightâŚi do not believe you.  â â  the power of any weapon comes from your heartâŚbut only when tempered by your head. â â wow, youâre so stupid. that your fatherâs doing? or your motherâs? â â  will we see people on the road? friendly? will they try to rob us? â â  smells like rotting eggs. is it still good? â â youâve only killed those deserving, right? â â youâre sounding more like your father by the minute.  â â  that thing was trying to kill us. itâs not like you donât get angry in a fight.  â â  leave. my. home.  â â  you killed against my wishes.  â â  itâs all you talk about, over and over. do something about it or shut up.  â â  behind you, watch out! â â donât know, donât care.  â â  this used to be a challenge.  â â  this place feels like a prison.  â â  it feels like something is waiting for us down here.  â â  donât be sorry. be better.  â â  kill for survival, not for indulgence.  â â canât believe youâve lasted this long.  â â in war, a soldier sees beauty in the blood of his enemy.  â â  the winds of fate have given us a strange coincidence.  â â  close your heart to their desperation. close your heart to their suffering. â â  youâve had to kill people before, havenât you? youâre used to it. â â  why do you say nothing? â â  youâve seen it with your own eyes. you canât hurt me. nothing can. â â anger can be a weapon if you control it.  â â  whatever it is you seek, i do not have it. you should move on.  â â  when they find you - and they will - theyâll make things difficult. â â  there is one unavoidable truth you will never escape: you cannot change.  â â only time you talk to me is when you need something. â â  we do what me must to survive.  â â  follow down this path and head for daylight. â â  heh. thought youâd be bigger.  â â you have a knack for ominous statemants.  â â  just tell me what i want to know! no need for this to get bloody.  â â we all gotta take responsibility sometime, huh? â â  that was a waste of a perfectly good apple.  â â  you think iâm weak, because iâm not like you.  â â  butâŚyou told me never to go down there.  â â  you know, i really hoped iâd never see this place again.  â â until our journey is over, one of us must remain focused.  â â  you must be better than me. understand? â â did something change? the forest feels different now. â â  with power comes a big choice. you serve yourself or you serve others. â â  do not mistake my silence for lack of grief. â â  we are not men. we are more than that.  â â  i know i was never what you wanted.  â â mourn how you wish. leave me to my own. â â  hurry! iâm slipping. â â  do not allow yourself to feel for them. they do not feel for you.  â â do not concern yourself with what might be. focus on what is. â â  we do as we please. no excuses.  â â your father can kill. are you going to be able to do that? â â  accuracy over speed.  â â  you left me here. again. why donât you care? â â what, you want a hug? â â  finish what you started.  â â  you know, for someone so strong, you worry a lot. â â  you are hunting deer - not chasing it.  â â i donât know you and you donât know me⌠donât seem to want to.  â â  killing animals i get. theyâre food. but people⌠theyâre just trying to survive too. â â  do you hear that? it sounds like someone screaming. â â  iâm going to cut off your head now. â â itâsâŚitâs still alive.  â â we are here because of you. never forget that.  â â  do not speak again. â â your angerâŚyou can get lost in it.  â â you donât have to be the smartest man in the world to see that. â â weâve come so far. there has to be a way.  â â  donât you see? they never gave up hope. and neither should we.  â â you can change your path. itâs not too late.  â â  iâve been to many strange places⌠but this is a new one.  â â oh, cut it out, princess. youâre gonna get me all weepy.  â â you are too quick to temper. you a rash, insubordinate and out of control.  â â  the path ahead is difficult and you are not ready.  â â  you are not ready - stay back.  â â  think iâm afraid of you?! youâre nothing to me.  â â stay by me. touch nothing.  â â  you were gone for so long i thought that you⌠ â    â  you will always be a monster.  â â look at me! look at me! â â  you are going to have to kill me for that to happen.  â â can you kill something that big?  â â  on our journey we will be attacked by all manner of creature.  â â so weâre gonna go toward the creepy singing? â â why are there two beds in there? â â  slow down. your haste will cost us.  â â  i warned you. you would not listen.  â â  no, waitâŚiâm not giving up. i justâŚhave to catch my breath.  â â well, this is it. itâs been an honor.  â â you left me alone to fight.  â â are you the last of your family too? â â my mother made it for me.  â â fight until we stop or we are dead.  â â the last in his realm of all this kind and you shoot him. â â  come. no looking back now.  â â  youâre more concerned with their safety than our goal.  â â i donât think weâre supposed to be in here.  â   â  iâmâŚsorry for your loss.  â â  i hoped thatâd you, out of all the people iâve faced, would make me feel something.  â â slow and old. you should never have come here.  â â that bowâs a little big for you, isnât it? â â  earlier you said people might kill us. iâll kill them if they try. â â  pain we endure. faulty weaponry we do not. â â  let me guessâŚyouâre gonna be smug and say we shouldnât have got involved.  â â  no. youâve been gone a long, long time! â â  if you try, iâll try.  â â  wow, uhâŚthat was something, that fight.  â â you did not think it was important to tell me? â â  death suits you better.  â â  is it dishonorable to grow old? â â  so unclean. so, so unclean.  â â  you wonât stop me.  â â  and i thought my family was fucked up. â â  iâm strong. iâm smart. iâm not what you think i am.  â â  when i require your counsel, i will ask.  â â donât you know when to give up? â â  listen to me. i can help.  â â  youâve taught me so much. let me teach you something.  â â okay. there are a few gaps in my knowledge. â â the path you walk. vengeance. you will find no peace.  â â  you know i love you. you just can be better. i know you can be.  â â  let them go. take me instead.  â â  iâve never felt more alive.  â â  noâŚyouâre bleeding.  â â do you have any idea, any idea at all, what you have cost me? â â i used to dream about getting eaten.  â â  relax. do not think of it as an animal. it is simply a target.  â â  try to find forgiveness, and we can start something new.  â â there is much about me i wonât have you know. â â  have you ever heard the term âtempting fate?â â â  your memory was a comfort in dark times.  â â  she meant more to me than you anyway.  â â you are not yourself.  â â  if seeing me dead will make things right, i wonât stop you.  â â  iâd bow if i could, your majesty. â â  then we will go home. to give up this easily, so close to the start⌠ â â  only fire when i tell you to fire.  â â  not my blood.  â â nobodyâs killed a dragon for hundreds of years.  â â are they deadâŚ? oh! not dead! not dead! â â  a dangerous beast. weâll take him down together. â
