tonight after work as my daily movie i will watch "Spirited Away" with my friends. i havent seen it but they have .. i only watched some of the early ghiblis, my two favorites are castle in the sky and kiki's delivery service. will update later... [transmission concludes]
YUUUPPP that was basically perfect. it feels like a big culmination of ghibli as a whole and has a fully encompassing sort of feel. there's a constant deluge of strange and lavishly animated creatures and the music and sound design are utterly enrapturing, it draws you in hard and fast. it doesnt adhere super hard to a three act structure but there's a strong emotional throughline as chihiro drifts between all these little setpieces and scenarios (not quite as meandering and slice of life centered as totoro either which i appreciate). theres a delicate balance struck between moments of genuine horror and danger and the funny and heartwarming stuff. i think my heart is drawn more towards kiki's delivery service as my "favorite" because it really hones in on a particular feeling and theme that resonates with me but spirited away is probably the "best" ghibli out of the ones ive seen, theres so much to love in it and it feels totally timeless and perfectly crafted. WONDERFUL FILM ‼️
