Words Like Lace and Fire

In a perfect world, you could fuck people without giving them a piece of your heart. And every glittering kiss and every touch of flesh is another shard of heart you’ll never see again.

I keep wondering, how many people do you need to be before you become yourself

Take wrong turns. Talk to strangers. Open unmarked doors. And if you see a group of people in a field, go find out what they are doing. Do things without always knowing how they’ll turn out. You’re curious and smart and bored, and all you see is the choice between working hard and slacking off. There are so many adventures that you miss because you’re waiting to think of a plan. To find them, look for tiny interesting choices. And remember that you are always making up the future as you go.

Look, let’s give it up. Let’s just lay around and make love and take walks and talk a little. Let’s drive down and look at the ocean. It’s only 45 minutes. Let’s play games in the arcades. Let’s go to the races, the Art Museum, the boxing matches. Let’s have friends. Let’s laugh. This kind of life like everybody else’s kind of life; it’s killing us.

People break so easily, and so do dreams and hearts

Just because two people are capable of deeply hurting each other over and over again does not make them passionate, star-crossed lovers. It makes them two people who keep doing terrible things to each other. Someone’s ability to make you completely and utterly soul-crushingly miserable does not mean they are a soul mate with some deep insight into your psyche. They are just someone who is really good at making you unhappy

Sooner or later I’m going to have to think about it and then I’m going to be a mess

The thing that I think probably helps me the most is the knowledge that things pass. Everything passes. Everything changes. And even the periods of time when I have felt the world was coming to an end, or my life was coming to an end, or things feel so difficult they are unbearable, the knowledge that tomorrow’s another day has helped me get through that feeling

Have no fear, you will find your way. It's in your bones. It's in your soul

That is what I like about photographs. They are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.

What happens when people open their hearts?  They bet better.

I am tired of trying to hold things together that cannot be held. Trying to control what cannot be controlled. I am tired of denying myself what I want for fear of breaking things I cannot fix. They will break no matter what we do

The human body essentially recreates itself every six months. Nearly every cell of hair and skin and bone dies and another is directed to its former place. You are not who you were last November.

I do not miss childhood. But I miss the way I took pleasure in small things, even as greater things crumbled. I could not control the world I was in, could not walk away from things or people or moments that hurt, but I took joy in the things that made me happy
