Synthesia
Jinki is an artist who has a neurological condition called Synthesia, which means he can see colours in sounds. Jonghyun happens to be a famous musician in the country, whom Jinki is a fan of. An accident partially blinds the artist, and he knows that he will soon lose his sight completely. The only thing that comforts him is Jonghyun’s voice, but how would he react when finding out the cause of the accident?
Thanking his lucky stars that he didn’t work on commissions, Jinki turned up the volume of the rock song he was listening to as he worked on his easel. Today, he was working with oil paints and trying to put what he could see out there so that others could look into his mind. Though it was weird to people that he could ‘see’ music, it was a great advantage to an artist since it gave them a lot more perspectives to work on. When one lifted a piece of glass into the light, they would be dazzled by the rainbow that was formed. When this phenomenon happened after the rain, one could be able to differentiate each of the seven colours that created the rainbow. Similarly, Jinki was able to visualise different colours when it came to music. If the song was metal, he could see black and silver, almost like flashes of lightning. The current song had a mixture of black and maroon, with a tiny bit of white. Concentrating, he tried to replicate the swirls that he could see onto the canvas. After about two hours, he took a step back and looked at the painting. Though it wasn’t exactly how he had envisioned it, Jinki was pretty happy. At the centre of the canvas was the blob of white, which morphed into red with black lines across it. Using a tiny bit of yellow ochre to highlight the white blob, Jinki smiled to himself. His preferred style had always been abstract since that allowed him to be as creative as he wanted to.
Lately, there was a singer he really liked. Kim Jonghyun had a voice that was as smooth as honey. There was something different about him, as Jinki could see that each song of his was different from the previous one. He had recently released a new album called Base where the songs happened to be indescribably beautiful. The first time he heard the song called Monodrama, Jinki had tears in his eyes. The song was so sad but still vibrant in the chorus. It was light blue mixed with midnight blue with flashes of yellow. He had once attended Jonghyun’s concert and had been enthralled by everything he heard and saw. After a while, it had started to become extremely overwhelming. The screams and cheers of the other concert-goers were messing with his brain, causing him to lose consciousness. When he opened his eyes, he was still at the venue, which had become empty. Though it shouldn’t have affected him as much as it did, Jinki felt a little sad that no one had bothered. After all, who was he? No one special or important. From then on, he preferred to listen to Jonghyun’s songs from the safety of his home. He saw online that Jonghyun’s birthday was coming up, should he paint something for him? It had been years since he had made a portrait, but he had a fantastic idea. A picture of Jonghyun, with all the colours he could see from his favourite songs. A medley of colours, if he could call it that. It would be his masterpiece, and Jinki was prepared to spend all of his time to make it as close to perfect as he could. Using his favourite picture of Jonghyun as the anchor, he began to draw, starting with the eyes. In the photograph, Jonghyun was wearing a long-sleeved white shirt under a crocheted vest and had a wreath of leaves on his head. In Jinki’s opinion, that was the best one to paint since white happened to be the root of all colours. White light shone into a prism brought out all the colours so he could really do justice to this. Each stroke of his pencil was a labour of love since he didn’t want to have to erase even a single line. Someone with such a perfect voice deserved perfection in everything else. There was no room for mistakes of any sort. Even if it took a month, he was going to get it perfect. To onlookers, Jinki may as well be counted as a crazy fan or a stalker, judging by the number of times he had tried to see Jonghyun. Truthfully, he just wanted to hear his spoken voice ones, to find out if it projected the same sort of colours as when he sang. Needless to say, he never got the chance to meet the idol face to face, no matter how much he had tried. It seemed as though fate was against them meeting before the portrait was ready. While working on the painting, Jinki only played Jonghyun’s songs and filled with the soothing shades of blue and green that he associated with him. Choosing to use the brighter shades on his hair since this wasn’t an entirely abstract painting, Jinki spent the better part of a week completing it. Anyone would have saved the original and given a print to the idol, but Jinki wanted him to have his masterpiece.
Packing it with brown paper, he looked online to see if there were any fan meets coming up, but there was nothing for another few months. With no other choice, Jinki decided to walk to the agency to drop it off. If he was lucky, he could even give it to the idol himself. There was some talk about Jonghyun hosting a radio show, and that would be amazing if it were true. At the very least, he wouldn’t get a restraining order from his lawyer. Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the glass door of the agency, which seemed incredibly cold. A smile formed across his face when he heard Jonghyun’s distinct voice from one of the rooms. Could he find some excuse that would help him stay at the agency until the singer finished recording? Judging by the expression on the receptionist’s face, there was no way he could wait there even a minute longer than necessary.
“Could you please give this to Kim Jonghyun?”, he asked with a crestfallen expression on his face.
“You can’t leave anything here. Take your crap with you”, the woman said rudely. There was nothing else he could do, except take his gift back with him and figure out another way to get it to the famous idol. Kicking a pebble that was in his way, Jinki tried to stay positive about his chances which honestly seemed extremely slim. To top things off, he heard the sound of the rumbling thunder from afar which meant Jinki needed to hurry up if he wanted to save Jonghyun’s portrait from getting ruined. Deciding to run across the road since it was faster, he held on to the product of all his hard work and started to pick up the pace. He was almost there when he noticed a pair of headlights travelling rapidly towards him. What happened next, felt like it was a dream. He heard a loud crash but it took a few minutes for him to feel excruciating pain before he collapsed right in the middle of the street.
*************************************************
Jonghyun had finished recording his new song and spent some time listening to the recording, clicking his tongue since he wasn’t happy with it. His throat had become sore after the numerous times he had recorded, and so he drank the glass of hot water with honey placed in front of him. The warm liquid indeed served to soothe him, but he had enough of his mistakes for the day.
“I’ll redo it in two days”, he said to the technical crew and stopped by the section of the art directors who were putting up the final touches on the music video. His head was starting to hurt, especially since he was a perfectionist so he first needed something to get him into a calm state. Opening the wooden cabinet beside his desk, Jonghyun pulled out three bottles of soju and started to drink. There was honestly something about the very sight of the green bottles that made him feel comforted. Who cared that he was too busy to go hang out with his friends? Alcohol had always been his best friend. The drink was slightly sweet, which wasn’t something he truly wanted at that time. However, he didn’t have much of a choice and couldn’t request any of the staff to bring him some more potent alcohol. After all, he had his idol image to think of. Locking the door of his cabin, he started to drink and didn’t stop till he finished all three of the bottles in front of him. He wasn’t exactly in a condition to drive back to his apartment, but there wasn’t much more that he wanted to do. Splashing some cold water onto his face, Jonghyun saw that his reflection in the mirror was no longer blurred. Since that meant he was on the way to being sober, he picked up his keys and walked to the parking lot. Luckily for him, it was pretty late so the roads were pretty empty. Not caring about the flashes of the cameras on the street, Jonghyun started driving fast so he’d reach his apartment as soon as possible. Rubbing his eyes with one hand, he failed to see that someone was trying to cross the road. It was too late to hit the breaks and Jonghyun ended up hitting the person who fell to the ground. Filled with shock and trepidation, he stepped out of the car and tried to check if the person was alive. Judging by the low moans, the victim was alive but there was a lot of red blood that pooled around his head. For God’s sake, he was a famous idol. His whole career would be ruined if he got caught by the police. Noticing some kind of parcel in the man’s hand, Jonghyun took it and placed it at the backseat of his car before driving away. He would be able to get the details using the package and could just pay the hospital for the man’s bills anonymously. It had to be his lucky day that there weren’t any security cameras where they were so there was no way he’d be found out. Getting to the basement of his apartment, Jonghyun spent some time checking his car for any scratches. Luckily, there was nothing. Not even blood.
*************************************************
Jinki had no idea where he was, and struggled to open his eyes, only to find bright lights that caused his head to hurt.
“Where am I?”, he asked faintly, trying to raise his hand. The last thing he could remember was trying to cross the road before it could rain. Everything hurt. The funny thing was that it even hurt to breathe.
“Do you know your name? You were in an accident and a pedestrian called the ambulance last night”
“I’m Lee Jinki. My head hurts”, he said before drifting back out of consciousness. He could hear some people speaking indistinctly but was able to catch a few words of the conversation. “Internal bleeding…..damage to the optical nerve…”.
He couldn’t understand what was happening to him, but the next time he woke up, everything was sort of blurred.
“What’s wrong with me? Why am I here?”, he asked frantically, grabbing the hand of the person next to him.
“Well, I’m the doctor at the ER and I treated your major injury when you were brought in. Your head has been stitched up, but you’re still at the ICU. I think there are a few things we’d need to talk about when you start to get better.”
This was the hardest part of being a doctor. How could she tell this man that the accident had compromised his vision? It had been a hit and run and no one had seen who the driver was. Some people could be truly horrible, she thought. If Jinki had been brought in about half an hour earlier, the doctors could have saved his eyes. The patient had been left to bleed on the street and if someone hadn’t seen him, there was a very high possibility that she wouldn’t be talking to him.
“Tell me about yourself, Mr Lee. What do you do?”, she asked conversationally, hoping to divert his mind from the self pity he was currently feeling. That was her style of treatment, she’d get to know her patients and have them open up about any other issues they had.
“I’m an artist.”
How could she tell him that life as he knew it was going to change drastically?
“I’m so sorry, Mr Lee. I prefer being honest with you and not giving you false hope. The accident was bad and you hit your head on a brick. A majority of your internal organs were unharmed, but your optical nerves have been damaged due to the pressure on your brain. How is your vision today?”
“Blurry”
Jinki felt absolutely devastated when he heard that his eyes were damaged. It clearly meant that he would never be able to paint again. Sniffling, he felt two fat tears run along his cheeks, but he wasn’t able to move his hand. Why did he even get saved? There was no point in anyone bringing him to the hospital. Fate was working in a bizarre way in his life. The last painting, his masterpiece, had caused him to lose his eyes. It felt poetic and seemed to be his way of going off with a bang. The doctor had explained to him that there were slim chances of him getting his full eyesight back, but the blurriness would fade soon. After that, he would have good and bad days until he became completely blind. Stretching his hand to try and touch the orderly who had put some drops into his eyes, Jinki called out to him.
“My painting...where’s my painting?”
“I’m sorry Mr Lee, there was nothing near you when you were taken into the ambulance. Only your wallet and phone.”
This time, he didn’t even bother trying to control himself and felt his shoulder begin shaking as he covered his face and sobbed. Just a day ago, he had been filled with hope and happiness. Now everything that had made him happy had been taken from him. There was nothing he loved more than art, and he felt extremely hopeless.
*************************************************
Jonghyun watched the news and read the papers to see if anyone had mentioned the accident, but there was nothing. Guessing that the guy must be totally fine, the singer threw the incident out his mind and went on with his normal life. His throat felt a lot better and he was able to record the song perfectly. Still, he couldn’t help wondering what had happened to the man. Didn’t he pick up the guy’s parcel? Honestly, Jonghyun couldn’t remember everything that had happened, since he had gotten drunk when he reached the apartment. When he got into his car, he glanced at the back seat but there was nothing. Had he dreamed the whole thing? He checked his tyres and the surface of the car again, and it truly did seem that the accident had been a figment of his imagination.
A week had passed since then and Jonghyun was finding it very hard to sleep. His usually dormant conscience had been filling his mind with thoughts that made him feel incredibly guilty. Thinking back about the events of what happened, Jonghyun remembered that he had been drinking. Still, he had a vivid memory of placing something in the car. Jumping out of his bed at 4 am, he decided to check for the last time. Opening the back door, he kneeled onto the seat to check the boot before placing his hands in the gap between the seats. When his hand touched something flat, Jonghyun pulled it out to reveal the item from his memory. If he hadn’t imagined the parcel, there was a very high possibility that he had indeed, caused an accident. Feeling as though he had been punched in the gut, Jonghyun used his sleeve to wipe away the beads of sweat from his forehead. Placing the parcel on his table, he was shocked when he saw his name and the company address. With trembling fingers, he opened the brown paper package and gasped at what he saw. It was a portrait of him, done using different colours which happened to be so much more beautiful than anything he had seen. He felt like crying when he saw that the painting had been a labour of love. What had he done? The small ‘J’ in the corner of the canvas was his undoing. Burying his face in his hands, he began to cry as he’d never cried before. He needed to find the person and apologise, but what could he say? Driving to the scene of the accident, he started enquiring if anyone had seen it. One person let him know which hospital the man had been admitted to, and he drove there instantly. He didn’t even know the man’s man and couldn’t ask about him. Instead, he pretended as though he was there for a normal checkup and heard the nurses talking, by sheer luck. There were discussing the plight of an artist named Jinki who had been the victim of a hit and run recently. Unable to stop himself, Jonghyun approached them on the pretence of signing autographs.
“Since I’m already here, would you like me to meet any of the patients?”
It was no secret that celebrities sometimes visited nursing homes or hospitals and spent time with the patients there.
“Mr Kim, if you can spare the time, there’s a patient who happens to be a fan of yours. He’s in room 143 and is allowed visitors”
“I’ll go there now, would you accompany me?”
Jonghyun wasn’t prepared for what he saw. A devastatingly handsome man lay on the hospital bed with an IV tube in his arm and bandages over his eyes.
“Jinki, you’ll never guess who has come to see you. I’ll give you a hint. It’s someone you admire”
“Nurse Kim, I’m so tired. The doctor made me exercise enough today and I don’t want to see him again. I’ve stared at those alphabet charts so much and it hasn’t made any difference. I’m never going to be able to see you, so you’d be stuck taking care of me forever”
Amazed at the way the patient, Jinki, was smiling while saying something so upsetting, Jonghyun didn’t think he was worth even being in the same room as him.
“Don’t be so melodramatic. It isn’t the doctor, and you can still see my beautiful face. It’s just a matter of time before you get back home”, said the nurse with a chuckle before whispering, “I haven’t seen anyone with such a sunny smile in all my years at this hospital. Go ahead, speak to him”
Sitting at the side of the bed, Jonghyun took the hand that didn’t have an IV in it.
“Hi, Jinki. My name is Jonghyun. The nurses were saying that you’re a fan of mine? I’m glad to meet you”
It felt horrible having to lie like this, but he couldn’t be honest. Not with the nurse still in the room. His heart lurched when Jinki squeezed his hand.
“Is it really you? I love your voice so much. Even now, your songs are the only things that comfort me. I’m glad the accident didn’t take away my hearing. Would you please sing something for me?” He wasn’t such a heartless monster to deny that request and wiped the tears on his face before clearing his throat.
“I’m always in my room alone, Imagining that we are in love I confess then we break up, The reason it’s a sad monodrama The monodrama of being in love alone, The encounter, the love, the goodbye The reason I am in despair” “That’s my favourite song of yours; I’m really glad to hear it live. Thank you so much” “It’s my pleasure”, Jonghyun managed to say, before leaving the room. If he stayed here any longer, he knew it wouldn’t be long before he started crying. To him, it had seemed like a small accident, but this man had lost his eyes and no amount of money in the world would turn back time. “What happened to him?”, he asked the nurse who had followed him outside. “It’s pretty sad, honestly. He hit his head after a hit and run and wasn’t brought here in time. There was a lot of pressure in his brain that affected his optic nerve and there isn’t much that we can do about that. He’s going to lose his eyesight completely. All I can hope is that it takes time” “Can anything be done? Some kind of surgery?” “A corneal transplant can, but he said he couldn’t afford it. Anyway, it will take a lot of time for Jinki to be ready for such a major surgery” The least he could do was pay for this surgery since he was too scared to tell Jinki the truth. How bad would it be if he never told him the truth and stayed by his side?
*************************************************
Jinki cried for an hour after Jonghyun had left. He had gone the thing he had always wished for, but he couldn’t even see his idol or even ask for an autograph. If only things had been different, he could’ve seen the expression on his face when he gave him the portrait. Now, he couldn’t even make another one. Had he done something wrong? What had he done to deserve this? After a few weeks of non-stop drops and medication, it felt like his eyes were split in half horizontally and he could see above that line. It was better than having blurred vision, but he was determined not to give up hope just like that. He would still paint for as long as he could see. He could just redo the portrait anyway since he remembered the colours he had used. It had felt like a fantastic idea at the time, but Jinki was annoyed beyond belief since he could only see the top half of his canvas. Tilting his head downwards didn’t make any difference, and he didn’t want to risk breaking the canvas by placing it higher. Jonghyun’s voice did sound better live than when it was recorded. When the man spoke, Jinki could detect warm colours like orange and red, but he had also sensed some hesitation. Guessing that Nurse Kim must have dragged the singer to meet him, it wasn’t hard to realise why the singer may have felt weird. The doctors and nurses were doing their best with him and trying to keep him in the best of spirits, but it didn’t always work. He tried his best to smile and joke with them, but at the end of the day, he had to face reality. Though he never had a bucket list, it was probably time to make one now. He needed to make a list of places he wanted to visit, and things that he wanted to do before that fateful day came. The head nurse had waited outside the room, just observing her favourite patient. She saw that Jinki always had a joke or a kind word for the staff, but she also noticed how sad his face had become, once he was alone. Each time she prayed, she included a line for Jinki, hoping that his body would be strong enough not to reject the donated corneas. The man needed another chance to show the world what he could do. It broke her heart to watch him struggle with the paints that he loved, and finally, end up tearing the sheet or throwing away his brush. He seemed to be all alone in the world, with no visitors since the day of his accident. She’d chuckled when he called her a mother hen and informed her that her voice exhibited pink hues, but she hoped the singer would be able to help. ************************************************* Filled with shame and remorse for allowing himself to be so reckless, Jonghyun decided to tell his manager about the incident. Shockingly, the man asked him to forget about it. After all, people got hit by cars every day, and this shouldn’t make any kind of difference to him. Jonghyun couldn’t lie to himself; he had been exactly like his manager until he had met Jinki. Who knew what else he could have done when he was drunk? He had already spoken to the director of the hospital and paid for the transplant. He heard that Jinki was getting bored of staying in bed all day, and requested permission to take him out for an hour every week. If he tried to be there for Jinki, maybe he could be forgiven one day. Trying to calm himself down, Jonghyun entered the usually pristine hospital room, which was now filled with torn paper and brushes that had been strewn on the floor. Was it weird to say that he could sense the gloom and melancholy as soon as he entered the room? Gone was the vibrant, smiling man that radiated warmth to those around him. Instead, the person on the bed was a shell of his former self. “Good morning, Jinki. It’s Jonghyun again. Shall we go outside for some time? I think a change of scenery would do you a lot of good” His reward was the tentative smile that formed on Jinki’s face, showing him that the happy wasn’t completely gone. “I don’t know if I would be good company for you. I’m sure you’d have better things to do”
Jonghyun didn’t have ‘better’ things to do. He truly wanted to try and ease his guilt by spending time with Jinki until the surgery. “I want to do this, okay? Don’t feel bad. Now, why don’t I help you change out of the hospital clothes?”, he asked gently while lifting a salmon shirt for Jinki to see. “I think you would look really good in this” The slight nod felt as though Jonghyun had accomplished something since it filled him with immeasurable happiness. “I’ve already spoken to the doctors and got permission. I thought we could go to your place and bring some of your things here today. Next week, I’ll take you to the recording studio” *************************************************
Jinki couldn’t believe his ears. Jonghyun, the famous idol Jonghyun, actually wanted to take him out of the hospital. It had to be a dream. If it did turn out to be a dream, Jinki hoped he would never wake up. Having Jonghyun’s arm around his shoulders was enough to give him goosebumps. He had heard that the singer was pretty stuck up and conceited, but the person who was with him now was nothing like that. Jonghyun was good and kind and Jinki was lucky to spend even a moment in his company. “I’ll drive us to your apartment first, then we can get something to eat” Jinki’s apartment, though slightly messy, was incredible. There were paintings on every surface, and there was a whole collection of them on a wall labelled ‘Jonghyun’. “Are those blobs supposed to be me?”, he joked when looking at the abstract works of art. Jonghyun could hear the pride in Jinki’s voice when he raised his hand to touch the paintings that had been beautifully framed and placed at the top. “I have a condition that lets me ‘see’ sounds in the form of colours. Every painting on this wall has been made while I was listening to your music. You’ll notice that this one right here has been made with shades of pink and yellow and has been based on ‘Shinin’. I’m sure you would have heard that the song gives a happy and lively vibe. Now, you’d be able to see it for yourself. I wanted to give you something, but it seems like fate wasn’t on my side. Please feel free to take any of the frames on the wall to remember me by” “What did you want to give me?”, he asked curiously, already guessing what was on the artist’s mind. Jonghyun wanted to hear it from his lips, to make sure he was right. “Well, I had been working on my masterpiece for a while. It was your portrait, made of all the colours I could see when hearing your beautiful voice. I don’t know where it is, but I promise you that I’ll make another one for sure. It isn’t over yet, I won’t give up” There was nothing that Jonghyun could say or do, except pull Jinki into his embrace. He had a lot of fans, but no one like Jinki, who amazed him with his words. “You will be able to see again. Just work on getting better and healthier so you can have the transplant” “I don’t have hope anymore. I’m being realistic, but now I know how I’d be spending my time. The first thing on my new bucket list is to complete my masterpiece. I don’t mind if I end up using all the time I have left, on that. It’s worth it, and so are you, Jonghyun” He couldn’t hide it anymore, not when Jinki was determined to do this. “There’s something I need to tell you. I’m not as perfect as you think. I’ve done a lot of things that I’m ashamed of and I really want to make things right. You’d never forgive me if you know what I’ve done” “We’re all human. Doesn’t the saying say ‘To err is human, to forgive divine’? Everyone has made mistakes. Don’t worry, I won’t call the magazines to tell them that you’ve been slumming it with me” How did the guy manage to hold on to his sense of humour? Jinki was like the sun, providing radiance to anyone lucky enough to know him. “That’s not what I meant”, he started to say before noticing the soft smile on Jinki’s face. Did he really want to take away what little happiness Jinki still had? He’d already taken away so much. “It’s a warm day today. Shall we have a picnic?” It didn’t take long for one of his assistants to prepare a basket for him, and all Jonghyun needed to do was pick it up. “I’ll get things ready and be back soon. Will you be alright on your own?” When he returned with the basket, he saw Jinki standing at the easel where he’d drawn a horizontal line on the canvas. The loud music he was listening to, meant that he didn’t hear Jonghyun enter. The singer could see how much the artist struggled to focus on half the canvas as he painstakingly began to draw. This was going to be a likeness of the painting Jonghyun had hanging in his living room. Although part of him wanted to stay silent and observe an artist at work, he wanted to take Jinki outside where he could feel the sun in his face and the wind in his hair. “That’s enough for today, Picasso. Come on”, he said as he helped Jinki clean the brushes before leading him to the car. Driving to a nearby park, he smiled at how lovely it looked with the bright green grass around the little pond in the middle. “This place looks pretty. I can hear ducks quacking” ************************************************* He had gotten used to people helping him sit down and stand up, but he didn’t like it one bit. Trying his best not to scowl, he watched Jonghyun put a tablecloth for them to sit on, before opening the little wicker basket he had brought. “The nurses told me that when one sense is removed, the rest of them become stronger. I wonder if that’s true” “Why don’t we test it out?”, asked Jonghyun who pulled out a silk sleeping mask from his pocket and placed it over Jinki’s eyes. Feeling something round in his hand, Jinki started touching it, only to find that the surface wasn’t completely smooth. In fact, there were a few bumps on it. Bringing it to his nose, he let the citrusy smell take over. “Easy, that’s an orange” Moving the mask away, he lifted the fruits above his eye level so he could peel it and offered half to Jonghyun. Smelling the fruit to discover what it was, made him feel like a dog. “I wonder if this is how your Roo feels”, he remarked casually, referring to Jonghyun’s dachshund. “Maybe”, said Jonghyun who took out his phone to take a picture of them. “Smile” “A picture with me? Could you use my phone, too?” This was going to be the best day ever since everything he had ever dreamed of, was coming true. He smiled happily until he heard the ‘click’ sound of the phone camera. “I already have the caption in mind” ************************************************* Jonghyun was going to do the unthinkable, as far as the agency was concerned. Posting the picture on his social media, he captioned it ‘sunshine smile’ before playfully tapping the end of Jinki’s nose. “What’s your account?” “Its ‘skehehdanfdldi”, said Jinki, who spelled it out for him. Jonghyun had never heard of such an abbreviation in his life. “Oh wow, what does it mean?” “When you use the corresponding letters of the Korean keyboard, it spells out ‘I am an animal too’. It just symbolizes that we are all the same” “That’s deep enough for someone to swim in”, he said, eliciting a chuckle from the man who looked as though he had won the jackpot. “Time to eat, Jinki. I’ll need to have you back in time or the head doctor would have my guts for garters" This picnic ended up being like nothing he’d experienced before. The more he got to know Jinki, the more he started to like him. The man was an expert at body gags, which made him laugh. How could he have only thought of himself all this while? It felt incredible to think about someone else and focus only on their happiness. A week had passed by really quickly, and Jonghyun had started the ‘Blue Night Radio’ programme where he was able to speak to callers and listen to them. He was able to appear to the public as more than ‘just’ a singer. People would never know how much he loved the show, even though it had just begun. He was able to show people that they were no longer alone and that he was there to listen to them. It was time for him to be honest with Jinki about what he had done. After all, he had been advising his callers to be honest with themselves with their feelings. It felt hypocritical to give that type of advice when he had such a huge albatross around his neck. The theme that night on the radio was Forgiveness, which was seriously ironic, but this could be his chance to talk about what he had done, without revealing the artist’s name. Coincidentally, the caller was incredibly guilty about lying to his parents about his grades. “Look it’s normal to feel scared to tell your parents that you didn’t do well. It was just an exam, so do your best for the next one. It’s always better, to be honest. Your parents might be angry or disappointed, but they would feel worse if they find out on their own. Just make sure to work hard and make them proud” It was probably time to talk about what he had done, and Jonghyun cleared his throat nervously. “I have a story for today since I also have to beg for someone’s forgiveness. I used to be extremely vain and I assumed that the world only revolved around me. Since I’m famous, I expected everyone to do things as per my wishes. I never realized how much a person can be affected by something that seems insignificant to someone else. There was a day when I drank alcohol and drove. I thought I would be fine since I had already washed my face. I assumed that I was sober enough to take the wheel, but I wasn’t. That was the worst decision I had ever made. That day, I thought I had imagined things, but someone got hurt because of me”. Unable to say anything more, Jonghyun dissolved into tears while on air. “I’m sorry, I’ll need to finish today’s broadcast early” The broadcast made him feel slightly less afraid. Saying sorry wouldn’t bring Jinki’s eyes back, but he needed to confess. Any relationship couldn’t be built on lies, and his friendship with Jinki had been exactly that. Although it was rather late, Jonghyun didn’t want to wait any longer and rove to the hospital. Sitting by Jinki’s bed, Jonghyun took his hand, even though he was asleep. “Jinki, I’m so sorry. I did this to you. It was me” This time, he didn’t bother wiping away his tears as he pressed Jinki’s hand to his forehead. “I know you’d never forgive me, and I don’t have the courage to ask for forgiveness. I promise I will do everything to get you a transplant so you can see again. I don’t have any excuse for what I’ve done. After the surgery, I’ll stay far away from you. I promise that our friendship wasn’t a lie. I really do care about you. I’m really sorry, Jinki” Looking up, he saw that Jinki hadn’t stirred at all, but his chest felt lighter. He needed to say it again when the man was awake. ************************************************* Jinki never failed to listen to Jonghyun’s radio show every week, especially as it made him feel closer to his friend. It felt nice to call Jonghyun his friend. The episode on Forgiveness was very different and he agreed with the advice the singer gave his listeners. He had been ready to ask the nurses to call the radio station when he heard Jonghyun’s confession. Listening intently, he felt as though someone had punched him. Was this how a stab in the back felt? Sinking back into the pillow, he felt a whole range of emotions as he understood what Jonghyun was talking about. It could be comparable to his worst nightmare, since the person he had admired the most, had done something so terrible to him. When he heard Jonghyun’s noisy sobs, he couldn’t help wanting to hug him and say that it wasn’t his fault. He had been amazed when Jonghyun had bothered to visit him as often as he did. Being an idol, he had the option to turn everything on Jinki, but he hadn’t done that. However, Jinki was the one who had to bear all the pain that came along with the accident. It had been so easy for the person behind the wheel to walk away, but Jinki would soon be unable to walk without help. Could he forgive Jonghyun for what he did? What he heard had shocked him beyond belief.so when he’d heard Jonghyun’s voice outside the room, Jinki pretended to be asleep. Though he felt really bad when he felt Jonghyun’s warm tears touch his hand, Jinki knew that it was best for him not to ‘wake up’ at that time. Jonghyun had seemed true to his word since Jinki didn’t hear his voice since that day. There were a number of changes in his life, starting with the hospital finding a donor for him. Jinki was being prepared for the surgery since his vision had gone down to only 5% of what he could see earlier. Since his dosage of medicines had been increased. Jinki would fall asleep really early, always missing the Blue Night Radio. Gradually, his anger had melted and he now only felt hurt that he had been discarded like a broken toy. Wasn’t there more to friendship than just apologizing and leaving? He’d started to miss Jonghyun, and listened to his songs on a loop. Though the man was no longer in his life, there was no doubt that the songs could still calm him down. His surgery was set for the following morning and Jinki was a bundle of nerves. He’d never had an operation before and this was extremely frightening. Especially since the doctors would be having a scalpel near his eyes. What he really wanted was to hold Jonghyun’s hand but he had to settle for only his singing voice. Feeling something placed over his nose and mouth, Jinki started to panic. Breathing rapidly, the last sound he heard was Jonghyun’s Hallelujah before he drifted out of consciousness. *************************************************
Unbeknownst to Jinki, Jonghyun had already been informed about the surgery and had arrived an hour earlier. He sat by Jinki’s bedside without a word, preferring to be like a ghost instead of speaking to him. When he saw Jinki panicking in the operation theatre, he couldn’t help himself from singing to him. He sang until he was sure that Jinki wasn’t conscious, but waited outside for the next five hours. The surgery was a success and Jinki had been advised to keep his eyes closed for 24 hours, after which he was asked to see the doctor again. “I’ll help with the eyedrops”, he volunteered as he wanted to spend a few moments in Jinki’s company before the healing period was over. Watching carefully as the nurses lifted up Jinki’s eyelids and put exactly one drop in each eye, he noticed his eyeballs roll around aimlessly. “His eyes are healing well, but you may have to take him back with you for a few days. Jinki can’t be by himself for the first week. Do you know the feeling when you’ve spent your time in a dark room and you get into the light? That’s how Jinki would feel. Our eyes would adjust o the brightness in a matter of minutes, but he will need more time” “I can take care of him during this time”, he said with confidence. It would make more sense to take Jinki to his place since it was bigger. The hospital was also sending a nurse with them, just in case. Between the two of them, Jonghyun was sure that Jinki would be well taken care of. When Jinki got discharged from the hospital, Jonghyun helped him into a wheelchair and drove the three of them to his expansive apartment. He didn’t know how long he could pretend to be someone else but he couldn’t stay away. He needed to know that the surgery was a success. ************************************************* Jinki still didn’t understand why Jonghyun hadn’t announced himself yet. It wasn’t as though he couldn’t hear him. Plus, Jonghyun had one of the most distinctive voices he had ever heard. If Jonghyun was determined to play, Jinki had no qualms in pretending he didn’t know what was going on around him. When his eyelids were opened for the drops and ointment, Jinki found that he could see a lot better, even though everything was blurred again. “Will I really be able to see? Everything is blurry, the way it was before I lost my vision” “Mr Lee, I promise that your eyes are looking so much better. Your vision is blurred now since your eyes still need to heal. You need to remember that it was a complex surgery so you will feel a lot of irritation in your eyes, but that just means that everything is working the way it should” Jinki was already able to tell the difference between the touches of the others in the place and knew that Jonghyun was the one who fed him and stroked his hair till he fell asleep each night. It was clear to him that the singer had changed entirely, especially when he’d heard Nurse Kim chastise Jonghyun for not having a glass of wine after his meal. Mistakes happened, but how a person reacts to them is what defines their character. It wasn’t about redemption, but Jinki no longer hated Jonghyun or blamed him. In fact, he wanted Jonghyun to be the first person he saw. It felt like an eternity before the day came. This time, when he opened his eyes, he should be able to see everything around him clearly. Taking a deep breath, he opened his eyes slowly and blinked a few times until he got adjusted to the lights, which were dim. Had the surgery failed? Why couldn’t he see properly? He had just started to hope again, and it had been dashed. It served him right, he thought as a tear slipped out from his eyes. “Jinki, how are you feeling?”, came Jonghyun’s voice as he wiped away the tear. “I’ve dimmed the lights so that it would be easier for you”. Was that what it was? He started sobbing, but this time, it was tears of happiness. Opening his eyes again, Jonghyun’s handsome face came into view. He looked exactly the way Jinki had remembered, but the dim lights gave his face a soft glow. Touching his soft hair, Jinki smiled happily since he had got his wish. “Thank you, Jonghyun”, he said while trailing his fingers along Jonghyun’s face, tracing his features. ************************************************* Jonghyun had never felt happier than at this moment. It felt pure, but he still had something to do. “Jinki, I need to tell you something”, he started to say, while looking at the floor. “No, I already know. I also know that you’ve been spending every moment trying to fix things. I forgive you, and I think it’s time for you to forgive yourself. You’re not the person you used to be” “How did you know? You were asleep when I told you” “Jonghyun, I was blind. Not deaf. I heard everything you said” Helping Jinki up from the bed, Jonghyun put his arm around him as they walked to the living room. *************************************************
Sitting up suddenly, he felt his head start to spin, and was grateful for Jonghyun’s helping hand. As they walked into the huge living room, he saw something that made him gasp in surprise. It was his pot of gold from the end of a rainbow. His portrait, set within a gold frame, had been hung right opposite the entrance. “The painting…..how did you get it?” “I thought it had your address on it, but when I saw how beautiful it was, I had to hang it up. I’m so sorry for not asking you first” “I...painted it for you” The old saying was true. Fate did work in strange ways. Never in his wildest dreams would Jinki have ever imagined that his masterpiece would bring them together like this. It filled him with pride and intense happiness to see that it had been displayed in a place of honour. While it was true that it had been the cause of his accident, the painting had solved everything. At the end of the day, it had all come down to fate.
The MV shows him lying in the middle of the street in despair, he even has a hurt lip
The mood of the song tone seems calming even though the actual song is quite sad.
It symbolizes regret after a breakup that happened when the couple were too young to work together and fix any issues in the relationship.
We also have a bit of rain; (Didn’t another group sing that love and memories fall with the rain?)
It brings to mind a relationship that started off wonderfully but then grew toxic with all of the arguments
We see people going about their day (People are moving along with their lives but he still lives in the memories of a happier time)
His style was like a smart casual since he paired the yellow tee with a jacket and converse shoes; we didn’t get to see a lot of his dance moves but it felt okay since the song told us a story
Lets move to the lyrics translation
Verse 1] Even if it hurts whenever you breathe in Leave me alone, let me be alone Just to miss you even in regret Leave me alone [Pre-Chorus] Not knowing it was our last To the end I tried to argue with you When looking back, it was nothing Why couldn’t I put my ego aside? [Chorus] We were just 2 kids, too young and dumb Young, dumb and clumsy hearts Hold them tight on that particularly sad day You and I, you and I Wishing you would hold me but I pushed you Saying the words “I’m sorry” was Uhm 2 kids, too young and dumb If I endured everything, would it be different? You and I [Verse 2] For everything that hasn’t worked out as I wished I deeply carve them as the reasons for the breakup We were in a loop of arguing and regretting like crazy Sometimes I recall those bygone days [Pre-Chorus] A breakup that couldn’t get any worse But I think it was beautiful in the beginning All the scars and traces you left on me They were love, and still are now [Chorus] We were just 2 kids, too young and dumb Young, dumb and clumsy hearts Hold them tight on that particularly sad day You and I, you and I Wishing you would hold me but I pushed you Saying the words “I’m sorry” was Uhm 2 kids, too young and dumb If I endured everything, would it be different? [Refrain] We were just too We were just too young and We were just too young and dumb We were just too young and dumb [Bridge] I kiss every memory one by one We were just too young and dumb Just too young and dumb [Chorus] We were just 2 kids, too young and dumb Young, dumb and clumsy hearts Hold them tight on that particularly sad day You and I, you and I Wishing you would hug me but I pushed you Saying the words “I love you” was Uhm 2 kids, too young and dumb We will have to live through the time, and be forgotten You and I

Bloodline
Plot: Jinki is the descendant of a long line of witches whose coven has gone near extinct. He must recruit new members in order to continue its existence. Along the way, he meets Jonghyun, a beautiful talented witch with extraordinary skill who he starts crushing on
Walking past the various churches and cathedrals around him without even admiring the symmetry like he used to, Jinki walked with purpose towards the tomb that acted as a front for his coven. Sometimes, it felt really strange to see the world changing so much around them that it was almost like evolution itself. Using their spells, the witches were able to age much slower than the average human. A hundred years in human life was equivalent to about two years for them, and they had to work hard to seem as though they were human, too.
“The meeting will now come to order”
“Do we have any new members?”
“None, it’s just the four of us”
The dejected expression on the leader’s face echoed the mood of all the members. Off late, they had been losing more and more members to old age. Since their witches had started to marry humans, the lineage had almost been lost. Powers were hereditary, and most of the new children ended up being entirely human. It was very difficult to find other witches, to continue the coven. Jinki was the only one from his family who possessed powers, and since he was an only child, it meant that he’d be the last one in his family to be a witch.
“Jinki, since you are the youngest member, it will be your duty to find others like us”
“Yes, sire”
As his leader stroked his long white beard thoughtfully, Jinki adjusted his blood-red velvet cape and nodded as he accepted the order that had been given to him. This was certainly not easy. As Jinki looked around the meeting spot of their coven, a cave with a table made of bones, he noted the many cobwebs and sighed. It had really been a long time since the cave got the cleaning it deserved. As he bowed and left, Jinki wondered where on Earth he would be able to find another witch. It couldn’t just be a half-witch, but someone of a pure bloodline. The purer the bloodline, the stronger their powers. Being the son of a clairvoyant and a warlock, Jinki was one of the most powerful witches in the country. His offspring, whether his partner was magical or not, would possess clairvoyance, even if they had nothing else.
The worst part of having two powerful parents was the fact that both powers couldn’t be used together. If only he could just gaze into a crystal ball like his mother, Jinki would be able to see the face of all the witches he could bring with him to bring their coven back to the way it used to be. All he could get was a sudden vision sometimes, or some really powerful dreams which turned into reality. The easy choice was to visit his family and just ask his mother for the answers he needed, but that would just count as weakness, which Jinki wanted to avoid at any cost. At his age, he was too proud to ask anyone for help, including his clairvoyant mother. Instead, he tried hard to think only about the coven before bed, so that he could get any kind of hint in his dream, that he could use. In his dream, Jinki saw himself at a normal convenience store, frequented by humans. In front of him was a dark-haired woman who was calmly filling her trolley. She looked very normal, and Jinki awoke instantly, having figured out that she must be the witch he had to find. Unfortunately, he had only seen the woman and the convenience store he would find her at, but he didn’t know when he should expect to find her. After noting down his dream in the blue notebook he kept on his dresser, beside his bed, Jinki drifted back to sleep. This time, the dream was a continuation of the previous one where he had seen the supposed witch, but this time the focus was on the man in front of her. With hair so fair that it almost looked white, and clad in the mortal’s fashion of a black leather jacket and jeans, this man exuded power. The woman might have some hereditary powers, but the man was the one their coven needed. The one Jinki needed.
The next morning, Jinki, who still remembered every detail of the man’s face, decided to start his search. It was fairly easy to find the exact store where he needed to be, as the area was exactly similar to his dream, even down to the abandoned salon next to it. Pretending to survey all of the available products, he wandered around the store while secretly looking for the man in his dream. Having waited for hours, Jinki was forced to purchase a box of cookies that he didn’t even like, just to prove that he wasn’t some kind of thief. As he was ready to leave, he spotted someone who looked vaguely familiar to him, but what was the leader of their coven doing in a place like this? Gingerly approaching the leader, Jinki bowed hastily before anyone could notice them.
“Sire, is something wrong?”
“No, I was just curious about the man you found. The one whom you’ll marry”
“What? I beg your pardon, but what do you mean?”
Laughing at the horrified expression on Jinki’s face, the wise leader rubbed his chin thoughtfully before answering,
“My boy, you forget that mind reading is a power that I possess. Regarding your marriage...think nothing of it, it was just a simple thought I had”
“I haven’t found him yet, but when I do, I’ll convince him to join us”
As he bid adieu to his leader, Jinki kept thinking about what had been said. Marriage. Would he really marry the man he saw? He didn’t even know his name, and now he was ‘destined’ to marry him? That was just crazy of anyone to assume something like that, and so far there was no sign of the white-blonde haired man. On his way back home, he spotted something from the corner of his eye, a flash of white-blonde and before he could do anything, whatever he saw just disappeared into thin air.
That night, his dream was something he had never expected. He saw himself once again, sitting by the man, except this time, they were at a coffee shop. Jinki stood up to collect their orders and smiled at their names on the cups, before sitting down. Sitting up in bed with a jolt, Jinki realized that he now knew the witch’s name. Jonghyun.
How hard would it be to find someone whose name he already knew? For the first time in years, Jinki decided to perform a spell that would make his work easier. Taking out his crystal ball and placing it within the patterns he drew, Jinki uttered an incantation. As the crystal ball started to fill with white smoke, Jinki took a deep breath and uttered the words that would change his life forever.
“Show me where Jonghyun is, right now”
The smoke cleared to show Jonghyun inside a bank vault, filled with money. Wide-eyed, Jinki watched as Jonghyun filled two sacks full of all the bills they could carry. Smiling, Jonghyun disappeared in a second and reappeared in what looked like his lair. A bank robber? Why would the coven even want someone as despicable as a thief? A thief with the power of teleportation who would most certainly bring ruin to all those around him. The more he gazed into the crystal ball, the more annoyed Jinki became. Determined to find this person and give him a good piece of his mind, he spoke into the ball and tried to see more about Jonghyun.
“Show me Jonghyun’s history”
Unfortunately, he’d forgotten that the spell only lasted for a certain time, and with a puff of smoke, the crystal ball went blank. It was no use in trying again, as Jinki was exhausted, but he knew the truth. People always said that the truth would set you free, but Jonghyun was going to learn the lesson of his lifetime. There were a lot of options that he could use to stop the thief, but the most effective one was a binding spell. Once bound, the victim couldn’t cast spells for a certain time. There was also an option by which the caster could determine what kind of spells the victim could be able to cast. Since Jinki came from one of the oldest magical families, any spell he cast would prove to be a hundred times more effective than if it had been cast by a novice.
Teleportation was not as much of a big deal now than it was, many years ago. Almost everyone was able to teleport, including Jinki, and if he was able to figure out where he could find the mysterious Jonghyun, he’d be able to bind him so that he couldn’t teleport again. Using the most powerful spell he knew, Jinki drew a different pattern on the wooden floor of his special room. Pricking his finger with a needle, he let three drops of his blood fall in between the lines of his pattern. Although blood magic was something that was frowned upon, it wasn’t exactly illegal. This type of magic allowed the user to do anything they wanted, even to read the minds of those unknown to them, which gave Jinki a lot of leeway into doing what he wanted. All he needed was a little glimpse into Jonghyun’s mind, and most, if not all of his questions would be answered.
“Show me Jonghyun’s deepest fear”
Knowing that this could be vital in his pursuit of finding out more about his self-claimed nemesis, Jinki took the chance in asking about Jonghyun’s fears rather than anything else. The cloud that formed showed something that was an echo of Jinki’s worst nightmare. He saw Jonghyun wearing tattered clothing and being burned at the stake. Though this wasn’t an uncommon nightmare, only those who had seen the trials when they were very young were able to remember. Feeling automatically closer to Jonghyun, almost as if he felt something more than just hatred, Jinki quickly ended the spell. He had seen more than he expected, and now he knew more about Jonghyun than anyone else did. If he could show Jonghyun that the humans these days were a lot smarter, maybe he would stop trying to draw attention to their race. All of the witches and other magical folk were now forced to either live in solitude or live amongst humans, pretending to be one of them.
*Flashback*
Although he was just a toddler, Jinki had already started to show signs that he was to become a powerful witch, which frightened his parents immensely. Usually, children would only exhibit signs at the age of five when they were more malleable, but due to his pure bloodline, Jinki couldn’t help using basic spells at a tender age.
Instead of trying to stop their marvellous child, his parents did their best to hide him from the humans, who had now started to abhor witchcraft and punish suspected witches and warlocks.
Hearing loud noises, Jinki walked over to the crowd that had gathered outside where he lived, and stood behind, transfixed. There was a man in ragged clothes who was tied up, while the crowd threw eggs and tomatoes at him. Not knowing what was happening, Jinki continued to watch as a torch was thrown at him, compelling the man to start crying and pleading for his life. The dark smoke that blinded Jinki, had started to enter his nose and give him trouble breathing.
“That’s another one of them disgusting witches. We’ll find all of them and burn them, just like this one”
His parents had been forced to go into hiding with the friends that were dear to them, and Jinki grew up being the only child in their coven.
*End of Flashback*
If Jonghyun was able to remember the witch trials from all those years ago, there was a very high possibility that he had grown up in the same area as Jinki. How was it possible that he wasn’t already in the same coven? Logically, Jonghyun should have been trained by the same elders who trained him and ensured the protection of his family, but why hadn’t he? Not knowing if it was right to start following him before knowing everything about him was the right thing to do, Jinki trusted his gut and took out his crystal ball once more. Jonghyun would be at the convenience store the following afternoon, and Jinki planned to confront him right there where he couldn't create any kind of scene out of fear of being noticed.
Dressing in jeans and a t-shirt as per the current trend, Jinki blended right in, when he wandered into the store. Knowing exactly where he’d find Jonghyun, he waited right by the alcohol section. Back in the day, only wine was allowed, but now all of them had to conform to the current society. Pretending to check the year of some red wine, he stood in position, ready for when he saw Jonghyun. He didn’t have to wait long though since Jonghyun appeared instantly, in a small cloud of smoke. What was wrong with this person? Did he really not understand what would happen if people saw him? Sighing, Jinki closed his eyes and muttered a spell to bind Jonghyun’s magic.
Jonghyun froze as he felt some kind of magic touch him, like an icy hand. Shivering, he turned around to see who it was. What he didn’t expect to see was a handsome, dark-haired man just smiling slyly at him. Muttering a spell to freeze him while he made his escape, Jonghyun was shocked to see that nothing had happened. Why couldn’t he move? This was the first time he had experienced anything like this and didn’t know how to react. Why didn’t his spell work? Almost jumping out of his skin when he heard someone cough right behind him, Jonghyun spun around, startled.
“Your magic won’t work, Jonghyun”
“How..how do you know my name?”
“I know a lot more about you than you think”
“Who the hell are you? How dare you try to bind my magic?”
“I was initially sent to bring you into our coven, but I’ve seen what you do with your power”
Taken aback, Jonghyun knew that the only way he’d be able to get himself out was if he agreed to everything this person said. Without his magic to safeguard or even protect him, Jonghyun felt rather helpless. However, there was something he could do, but not in such a public space. Fuming inwardly but refusing to show it, he meekly followed the taller man outside. As they walked to a more private area, Jonghyun took out a small needle from his pocket, making sure that he was unobserved. Gently pricking the tip of his index finger to draw blood, Jonghyun murmured his incantation just as a drop of blood touched the ground.
“Farewell”
Jinki looked up and gasped as he saw what Jonghyun was doing, and just gaped as Jonghyun disappeared in a red cloud. This was blood magic, an art that was dying, and heavily frowned upon. Sure, even he dabbled in the dark art to find Jonghyun, but only when he was sure that nothing would be traced back to him. If Jonghyun knew this kind of magic, it was certain to say that he had been trained by someone who was from a coven of sorcerers. Additionally, this type of magic couldn’t be performed by every witch. They’d have to have either a powerful lineage or had to be trained. Which one was Jonghyun, and why did they share the same fears? If Jonghyun was so accustomed to using blood spells so easily, it meant that he had been practising for a long time.
For the time being, it made more sense to find out Jonghyun’s origin, rather than chase him to join the coven. Jinki arranged a visit with the all-knowing leader to find out what he had to do next. Standing in the darkened room, only illuminated by candlelight, Jinki stared in open-mouthed wonder as his leader stroked his long beard thoughtfully.
“You want to find out how Jonghyun knows this type of magic since it is considered forbidden”
As always, amazed that the leader knew this, Jinki simply nodded.
“You need to know about his family, first. I’m afraid that this will bring a bad memory for you, but do you remember the time before your parents joined the coven? The witch trials were going on, and we all had to go into hiding. The person from your nightmares, the one that was burned on the stake before your eyes. That’s Jonghyun’s father”
It was no wonder that Jonghyun shared the same fear as him, as he had seen his own father being accused of witchcraft and punished for it. For a moment, Jinki felt his resolve soften when he put himself into Jonghyun’s shoes. Since he seemed to be against humans by stealing all of their things for his own benefit, it was definitely wrong. However, Jinki really did understand why Jonghyun was doing all that he did, but there was so much more than he needed to know.
“Sire, how did he end up like this? Where did he go after the trial?”
“He was raised by a single parent, and when he lost his father, our coven was ready to take him in. We were a bit too late, as he had been taken in by some of the most powerful sorcerers of that time”
“So they taught him all that he knows?”
“They were skilled in blood spells, and have definitely taught him well”
“Why does he use his magic for evil? So far, all I’ve seen is him stealing from the mortals”
“He despises the humans, and blames their backward beliefs and superstitions for him losing his family and the life he’d known”
“If they find out that we live amongst them, I’m sure there would be a lot more of us getting killed”
“Find him, and show him why he is wrong. Show him that there are humans who are good and kind, and that we can coexist and live together in harmony”
After living in hiding for most of his formative years, Jinki had slowly gotten used to living life as a human. Although it hadn’t been easy for him to convince the humans that he was one of them, his cover as a merchant trading spices and wine had provided him with a nice brick house with glass windows. His life had also taken a drastic turn, but Jinki didn’t hold any grudges. Knowing that there was nothing he could do to change the minds of those around him, he was forced to find Jonghyun.
Meanwhile, Jonghyun was busy splashing cold water on his face, as he replayed what had happened, in his mind. All this while, he had taken care in covering his tracks, so how had he been found so easily? Had he grown cocky and made a mistake? The man he had just seen, even knew his name, which had honestly shocked him. Was he a seer? It was safe to say that the mysterious ‘visitor’ had powers. The main thing he had to do was to find out who the visitor was, and whether he could lure him onto his side, against the humans. Someone who was powerful enough to find him, would surely make a spectacular ally, but he first had to report this to his superiors. Though he wasn’t exactly in a coven, there was a kind of group for those like him, and he thrived there. Being the youngest, he was given all the freedom he wanted, but his only aim was to make the human race pay for their sins.
Where the humans preferred to drive, Jonghyun found that teleportation was the easiest way for him to travel. With just one drop of blood and a crystal, there was nothing he couldn’t do. Filled with self-confidence, he chanted the necessary spell and soon found himself at his destination. Passing by the beautiful stained glass windows as he walked to the basement, he smiled at the ignorance of mankind. His ‘so-called’ coven existed in the basement of one of their churches and for all these years, no one had ever found out, even if they made any noise. It was almost ironic for the elders to choose this particular spot, as it was a haven for the humans. The basement looked like a dungeon, so it was obvious that none except those intended would ever cross the threshold. Blinking quickly so that his eyes would get adjusted to the darkness, Jonghyun rushed to the middle of the area, where the two sorcerers who brought him up waited for him. It was them who had saved him from a life of mediocrity and had taught him everything he knew. In their blood-red robes that matched the backdrop, they posed formidable figures. To the outside world, they didn’t exist but they had been sustaining themselves for all these years solely with the power of their craft. If they couldn’t use their own lifeblood, Jonghyun would provide his own for their spells. After all, he did owe them his life. The dream he was meant to fulfil was to bring all the witches and sorcerers together and take their rightful place in ruling over the mortals. It was about time the pitiful humans knew exactly who held the most power amongst them all.
“Why do you look so strange today, boy?”
“I think I’ve found someone powerful enough to join us”
“There aren’t so many sorcerers like us here, whom did you find?”
“Honestly, he found me, which is why I think he will be perfect”
Exchanging a look, his guardians picked up a huge book of ancient spells, and took a dusty crystal ball from behind their table. After dusting the cobwebs from the book, the elder of the two sorcerers placed the crystal ball on the wooden table. Placing both hands at the side of the ball, he gestured to his partner to start casting the necessary spell.
“Jonghyun, I need you to visualise the face of the person you met. I understand that he didn’t introduce himself to you. As you picture his face, please let one drop of your blood touch the surface of the crystal”
As the dark red smoke swirled around inside the ball, Jonghyun stared intently as the man’s face began to materialise.
“Who is he?”
The smoke turned into the letters JINKI. So, that was his name.
“Show me his origins”
The smoke morphed into an image of a dark-haired child playing with his parents. Judging by the gasp that escaped the lips of his guardians, it was obvious to him that they knew who he was. With shock reflected on their faces, they ended the spell before facing each other.
“Isn’t it funny that this boy is the one whom our Jonghyun met?”
“It feels like fate has been playing a game with our lives”
Getting more and more befuddled by the minute, Jonghyun knew he couldn’t stay silent any longer.
“Do you know this person?”
“Well, he comes from a powerful family of witches and clairvoyants, and we think he has received the powers from both his parents. His mother is a great seer, and must have taught him her craft. It’s funny because his father’s side were the ones who vowed to ban the use of blood magic, back when it was used frequently. For centuries, we’ve been at loggerheads with each other. Just imagine, the descendant of human huggers, joining our coven? This is beyond perfect”
Would it be feasible to bring Jinki into their group, if he was a human hugger? It would be funny if that was Jinki’s destiny, and Jonghyun had no qualms against showing him why humans deserved to be hated. Rather than searching for Jinki, it was much easier to let himself be found instead. How long would that take?
Jinki has become accustomed to thoughts of Jonghyun, ever since he escaped. Although it irked him to his core, he couldn’t help but admit that it was an ingenious move on the part of Jonghyun. Someone who was so good at blood magic was a diamond amongst the rocks and could make a really big difference when brought to the right side. Repeating the same spell to find out where Jonghyun would be, Jinki ensured that he was at the location as well. Surprisingly, instead of trying to escape, Jonghyun merely smiled at him. As though he had been expecting him. This couldn’t be right. Could it be some sort of trap?
“Hello Jinki”
Feeling goosebumps all over, Jinki felt his hair stand on end. How did Jonghyun know his name?
“How do you…?”
“How do I know your name, Jinki? I know a lot more than you think”
Throwing his own words right back at him? There was no doubt in his mind that something was afoot. He just didn’t know if he wanted to get to the bottom of it.
“What do you want, Jonghyun?”
“I want you to reach your full potential. Just imagine what we can do with our combined magic. We’ll be able to rule the world the way we are meant to. There’s so much to prove to those around us, and I cannot do it by myself. I need someone like you by my side”
Jinki had no idea what Jonghyun was referring to, but it felt as though he was being recruited into a different type of coven. Would this be the excuse he needed to make Jonghyun change his mind? It was a definite possibility that their proximity would prove helpful to him.
“I agree, Jonghyun”
Not even wondering for a moment as to why Jinki agreed with him instantly, Jonghyun merely smiled as he brought his hand forward to shake Jinki’s. In order to test his sincerity though, Jonghyun would have to show him how their enemies, the humans, truly were. Not willing to take him to their secret place just yet, Jonghyun raced through other possibilities in his mind, since he certainly couldn’t do what he wanted to, in public. Spotting an abandoned manor a few minutes walk away, he knew for a fact that they wouldn’t be interrupted. As they walked inside, Jonghyun used a spell to conjure up the basic necessities he needed for his teleportation spell. . Not just teleportation, but Jonghyun was planning to take Jinki back in time to show him the harsh reality that his life had become. Holding out a large fragment of tektite, he motioned for Jinki to touch it, too.
“I need to show you something, and for this, we will need to travel back in time”
Though this request seemed odd, Jinki knew that this was the only way Jonghyun would start to trust him fully. Before he knew it, he had been pulled from the world he knew, into what he considered his worst nightmare. Although the surroundings seemed to be off colour, Jinki followed Jonghyun as he approached the large crowd in front of them.
“Don’t worry, Jinki. No one can see us; we can merely observe”
All those around them were clad in light shirts, breeches and top hats, with the women wearing long dresses and bonnets.
Jonghyun entered one of the small cottages in front of them, and what Jinki saw, broke his heart into pieces. He felt tears start to prick his eyes as he saw a young boy being pulled away from his father’s arms by two older men.
“Jonghyun, come on. We need to leave right now”
“I want dad. Can’t he go with us?”
“No, my child. He will join us later”
The crowd had turned into a frenzied mob who had begun to start shouting curses outside the door. The two men had barely managed to drag the young boy out through the back when the mob broke the door down. Seizing the boy’s father, they began to beat him mercilessly as they tore his shirt to tatters.
“Kill the witch and his kin. Burn them all”
The crowd had managed to drag the poor, screaming man outside and tied him to the large stake in the middle of the town. Calling upon everyone to come and watch, the leader lit a torch and threw it onto the hay under the stake.
The adult Jonghyun stood behind his child version, just watching the events, while Jinki only focused on the child who was crying silently. As the flames began to lick the man’s feet, he started to scream with pain. If he really was a witch, why couldn’t he have just used his powers to escape? The smell of singed flesh began to fill the air and the man soon breathed his last, right in front of his child, who stood transfixed until his father had been burnt to cinders.
Jinki wiped away the tears from his cheeks as he and Jonghyun were transported back to their own time.
“Now do you understand me, Jinki? My father gave his life for mine, and these mortals are to blame for all of it”
Unable to speak, Jinki took a step forward and embraced Jonghyun. He couldn’t even begin to imagine how hard his childhood had been. As he felt Jonghyun’s heart beating against his chest, Jinki was struck by a feeling that seemed to be utterly out of place. It felt good to hold Jonghyun close to him. It felt right, but Jinki had no idea why. He’d never wanted to feel close with anyone before, but now, it was all he wanted. If only he’d known Jonghyun earlier, he could have helped to erase the hatred from his heart. Even now, he couldn’t help but feel a little touched that Jonghyun had let him inside those thick walls of his. Although Jonghyun had guardians, he’d never had a friend to talk to. For someone who had only been fed hatred all his life, it would be close to impossible for him to get out of it. Yet, Jinki was more than willing to do his best. If he wanted Jonghyun to join him, he needed to show him the other side. The side where he would prosper.
“I’m sorry you had to grow up the way you did, Jonghyun”
“I don’t want your pity. I want you to join us and make the world great again”
“I have to think about it, this is too big a step for me to make any decision right now”
Knowing that if he followed his soft heart, he would end up somewhere he never wished, Jinki tried to think of anything that would become a barrier between them. Should he be honest about his true motives?
“Jonghyun, I had originally tried to find you so that you would join my coven. I didn’t expect the same invitation to be extended to me. I should tell you the truth now. I don’t hate humans, and I never have. I remember the day you lost everything. I was there too, but I wish we had been able to care for you. Times were different then, and the world really is changing. In fact, change is the only thing that is constant. Over the years. We have learnt to coexist with them. There is no more ‘them’ and ‘us’. Please try to understand that I’m only saying this because I care.”
Jonghyun felt something within him burst and felt the rage boil inside. Almost spitting with anger, he faced the only person to whom he had bared everything.
“Traitor”
“You’re wrong, Jonghyun. There’s so much more to life than hatred”
“You’re a disgrace to witches everywhere. You’ve seen what they have done, and yet you still stand in front of them?”
“Nothing is black and white anymore, try and understand”
“You will die along with the pitiful humans you’re trying to protect”
Since there was no way to end their conflict amicably, Jinki had no other choice but to assume his stance. Though it was clear that Jonghyun was more than skilled in blood magic, it was Jinki who had the stronger bloodline. Using blood in any type of spell, made it ten times more effective, and there was no doubt in Jinki’s mind that in order to win, he had to fight fire with fire. He did have one trick up his sleeve. A trick that no one knew about. Jinki had spent years perfecting the art of reading minds. Although he considered it as cheating, it wouldn’t be so bad to use it against someone like Jonghyun. All he needed to do was concentrate on Jonghyun’s face, until he was able to see past his head, into his mind. If given enough time, he would be able to pull up something that could help in changing Jonghyun’s mind, but for now, he would only focus on the attacks that were going to come his way.
Livid, Jonghyun nicked his skin to assist all of his magic and summoned a spell of fire to burn the man in front of him into ashes. Almost instantly, he noticed that Jinki was doing the same thing. As he sent forth his spell, he was shocked to see the counter spell that Jinki had sent. A spell of ice, which rendered his, useless. Shivering slightly from the cold, Jonghyun was stunned. How had Jinki so instinctively managed to outdo his magic? Instantly conjuring a spell that would create a dark cloud around him, he gasped as Jinki conjured a spell of light so bright that it almost blinded him. Did he have a different kind of power?
Jinki found it hilarious when he saw the expression of utter horror on Jonghyun’s face. For all it was worth, he couldn’t hide the fact that he was actually enjoying his little glimpse inside Jonghyun’s mind. Mind reading wasn’t the only power he had perfected. In fact, he also possessed the power of mind control, that he had inherited from his family. After shocking his handsome opponent by counteracting each of his spells, Jinki felt that it was time to amuse himself by making Jonghyun do things he normally wouldn’t. Now, what should he start with? How could he make the calm and composed man go totally out of control?
That expression on Jinki’s face was really started to unnerve him. The smirk seemed to signify a lot, and Jonghyun was really starting to panic a little. How had Jinki managed to figure out his every move? That level of intuition was so accurate, that it was just scary. As he continued to think, he sensed a presence of some kind. He felt as though someone with cold fingers was touching his head, and he started to feel shivers go down his spine. Sinking to his knees as he felt a sharp, piercing pain in his head, Jonghyun struggled to stop the old memories that started to resurface from wherever he had locked them. His earliest memory...from when he was a child...he saw himself as a toddler, laughing as his father lifted him and put him on the swings. His best friend back then was on the swing next to him. Though he was the son of a human, they had always acted if there was no difference at all. He saw them wearing matching clothes and spending hours just running around together. Whatever had happened to his childhood friend? Why was he getting this memory now?
As he was forcing Jonghyun to relive one of his favourite days, Jinki was still searching his mind for something else that he could use to bring him down. What he saw, really shocked him. It was an old memory after the time Jonghyun had been taken away by his guardians, where the young boy had overheard a conversation.
“I think the boy will be a good asset to us. It was a pity that he is an orphan now, but this just makes everything easier for us”
“We can raise him the way he was meant to be raised. We can make him into a machine, a puppet that works the way we want”
“Those humans need to be taught a lesson, and we can definitely make him hate them”
“Just make sure he never finds out that it was us who led the humans to his father”
“Sacrifices are necessary, and if he wasn’t of such a pure bloodline, he would be dead by now”
This was just crazy and extremely unexpected. He’d had to search Jonghyun’s memories for this particular one, which showed that some magic had been used to hide it. It appeared as though the boy’s guardians had found him and tried to obliterate his memory. Then they’d had a field day with training the impressionable child to do exactly what they wanted. It wasn’t Jonghyun’s fault that he had ended up like this, but theirs. The only way he could bring this person out of all of this, would be if he showed him what his guardians truly thought of him.
“Jonghyun, you’re so clueless”
“What the hell did you do to me?”
“Nothing. I just showed you things that you’ve forgotten. How to smile, how to be happy. It’s time you woke up and saw the truth that’s right in front of you”
For the first time in ages, Jonghyun wasn’t calm or poised. All he felt, was confusion. About everything he had ever known. Doubting himself for the first time, he walked towards his opponent with his head down.
“What is this truth you’re referring to?”
“Come with me and let me show you that I’m right”
By now, his confusion had transformed into curiosity, and he was more than ready to find out what was happening. Taking Jinki’s outstretched hand, Jonghyun instantly was transported to the lair of his guardians, under an invisibility spell. Not expecting what he was supposed to hear, he was about to make his presence known when his companion stopped him.
“Just listen, Jonghyun. You will soon understand”
Entering the open door, he came face to face with the two most powerful sorcerers he knew, but of course, they couldn’t see him. For some reason, their faces looked different, they didn’t seem happy at all. Judging by the frowns on their faces, it was obvious that they had been arguing for a while.
“Do you think that stupid boy would have done as we ordered him to?”
“He should have. We have trained him as well as one would train a lapdog”
“The stupid child thought we actually cared. You know, if he doesn’t prove to be useful anymore, do you think we can expose him, the way we did his father?”
“I think we should start working on that. If he brings that Jinki, then we don’t need him anymore. We can just brainwash Jinki and make him do our bidding”
Feeling tears start to prick his eyes, Jonghyun couldn’t listen to any more, and just dashed outside. Covering his face, he just sobbed as though his heart would break. After all, it had just been broken into pieces by the very people he loved as his family. When Jinki sat by him and slipped his arm around him, Jonghyun couldn’t believe that the person he considered an enemy, was actually embracing him. All this while, all he had known was hatred, but this small gesture made him feel warm inside. Just the feeling of companionship with someone who didn’t want to use him, made him feel things he hadn’t felt in years. Was this what it meant to be truly happy? Why was Jinki being so nice to him? Was it pity? All this while, he had done the bidding of someone else, without thinking by himself.
“Jinki, why are you doing this?”
“You’ve been brought up only to hate. I promise to show you that there is so much more”
As Jinki held Jonghyun in his arms and stroked his hair, he felt him become calmer. He was beginning to see the other side of Jonghyun. The side that those evildoers had tried to bury. There as so much that he had to show the person in front of him, who had been bred to hate.
“You know, Jonghyun, initially I wanted you to join my coven, but now I realize that it is not the priority anymore. I need to show you how different the real world is, from the world you grew up in. Don’t focus on these people anymore, let’s go”
“Wouldn’t they come for me?”
“We’ll take care of it, okay? Trust me”
Wiping his brimming eyes, Jonghyun opened up his heart for the first time and brought down all of his walls. Someone who was able to see into his mind, and still chose to be by his side, should never be let go. Using their combined magic to teleport, they ended up in the middle of a fairground.
“Jinki, where are we?”
“Let’s spend some time looking at life through the eyes of children. I know that I can never give you the childhood you lost, but I can try to help”
He knew this place, the colours and smells were s familiar to him. Looking around, he saw tons of brightly coloured balloons, and children holding great big globs of sweet-smelling, pink candy floss. Instantly transported back to his childhood, he grabbed Jinki’s hand, with a huge grin on his face.
“Can we go on the Ferris wheel?”
Although Jinki felt happy to see Jonghyun like this, it pained him to think of how lonely the child would have been. Forcing a smile on his face, Jinki followed his companion to the promised land.
As the ride started to move, all the people they’d seen, seemed like ants. Why couldn’t they look at their problems like that? For now, he could see the dazzling smile on Jonghyun’s face, and that was more than enough for him. His plan for the day was to give his new friend, the childhood he had lost. If Jonghyun was handsome normally, when he smiled, he looked like a prince. They laughed and played like children, and soon felt their troubles melt away. Being by each other’s side was definitely beginning to evoke some feelings, and they couldn’t help but interlock their fingers as they rode attraction after attraction. When they entered the haunted house, the sudden thrill they experienced was enough for them to cling together as ghouls popped out from their hiding places. They felt a certain kind of shock, as they hugged each other, but a pleasant one.
Jonghyun didn’t know why he was suddenly feeling so happy, but this was something he could certainly get used to. Perhaps it was finally time to start listening to his own emotions. He would forever be grateful to Jinki for showing him how happy life could actually be, but for now, there was something he wanted to do.
Finally. Jinki smiled to himself as he read the thoughts in Jonghyun’s mind and took it upon himself to make them reality. Sliding his arm around Jonghyun’s waist, Jinki dipped his head and kissed him. Although brief, the kiss was soft and sweet. The stars in Jonghyun’s eyes seemed to shine brighter than ever. The first step had been completed, and it was upto the two of them to see where their life would take them. It had been a very long time since Jonghyun had been shown genuine affection, and now, this was something Jinki would do each moment of every day. However, there was one question he needed to ask,
“So Jonghyun, would you like to join my coven?”

Fantasy of a Vampire
“Ah Jonghyun-ah, I feel a little sad that we deceived that girl like that. She trusted me and we just used her”.
“You’re too soft. You always have been. That’s the problem with your kind. You have too many emotions”.
Jinki furrowed his brows in annoyance. His kind? What did the vampire know? Jinki was a descendant of one of the most powerful creatures ever known. His ancestor would draw his power directly from the sun and was really terrifying to look at. Over time, his kind had evolved into having human-like features and emotions, not to mention they had become much weaker. Instead of drawing all their power from the energy of the sun, they were able to draw only a quarter of it. Unless they had fed, their light would reduce, and they would die if they had no light left. Jonghyun had absolutely no idea how lucky he was, being undead for several centuries. They had known each other for a long time and started to work together, doubling their strengths and covering up their weaknesses. Jonghyun, with his ability to get inside people’s heads and hypnotize them, and Jinki, with his baby face that made every human trust him, made a great pair. When a human entered their forest, it was a fight between all the creatures to grab and devour him. The last human who’d entered their forest, a girl, was different. For starters, she was so noisy that almost every type of living being in the forest had tried to devour her. For the first time in years, he’d had to fight off everyone else to get his victim. However, his memories of the girl still plagued him.
Jonghyun couldn’t understand why Jinki was so bothered about the incident that had happened earlier. Sometimes, he felt as if he didn’t know him at all. Jinki was the one being whose mind Jonghyun had never been able to enter. The first time they’d met, Jonghyun had had a rude awakening when he’d tried to hypnotize Jinki. He’d been stunned when he’d received a punch to the face. For a guy who looked slender and timid, Jinki possessed a brute force that was completely opposite to his build. For a moment, Jonghyun had felt something other than pain and admiration. He had felt a little flicker of lust. Jinki’s soft features and honey blonde hair, mixed with the bright aura of his, made him utterly stunning. Jinki had never known this, but he made Jonghyun’s cold heart melt each time they saw each other. Each time Jinki’s light diminished, it would send Jonghyun into a state of panic. He really couldn’t imagine not being around him.
Jinki had never understood why Jonghyun had always taken such good care of him. It has taken them a while to stop looking at each other as an enemy. Once they had got used to each other, they had become inseparable. It was unnatural for a demon of light like him, to be friends with a vampire, but he really enjoyed his company. He knew his life would have been very different if he hadn’t met Jonghyun. He would have missed out on knowing someone who always gave him the first share of their kill, lest his aura faded. Someone who’d once risked everything to save him from the shadow creature that had attacked him. Someone who had come to be his best friend.
The delicate water sprite watched the fire fairy walk past him, angrily. It really seemed as if he felt no other emotion. Taemin watched with bated breath as another bush was destroyed by the ball of flame that was flung at it. Water sprites loved nature, and Taemin was no exception. It made him angry to see his favorite flowers and trees being destroyed. He was going to put a stop to this.
Minho was in a horrible mood. He wanted to destroy anything and everything that was in his way. A few weeks ago, he’d had a choice prey just blatantly stolen from him, and he still hadn’t gotten over it. He cracked his knuckles and let out another beam into a rose bush, but it strangely didn’t catch fire. Confused, he tried again and heard the sound of his flame sizzling. This had never happened to him before. Was he losing his powers? That couldn’t be it. He looked around to find a boy sitting at the edge of the nearby stream, immersing his feet in the water. Dressed in a pale blue shirt and black pants, with his sharp features, he resembled an elf. Minho continued staring at him, feeling more than a little mesmerized by his sapphire blue eyes. Blinking himself back into reality, with his brows furrowed in concentration, he tried yet again to burn the bush. From the corner of his eye, he saw the boy wave his hand, and he felt a gentle mist touch his face. What kind of elf could control water?
Taemin grinned as he saw the annoyed expression on the fairy’s face each time he doused the flames. The fairy looked almost regal in his red and black robe, and dark hair. He would look really handsome if he smiled. Carefully watching his expressions, Taemin sent a shower of water droplets on him, to douse him.
“Stop it, elf. You don’t know whom you are dealing with”.
“I’m a water sprite, not an elf, and you can call me Taemin”.
“I’m Minho”.
“Well, Minho, you need to learn to trust people. I’ve been watching you for a while now, and I really think you need to relax”.
Minho couldn’t do anything but just glare at Taemin. The nerve of that boy, telling him what to do. Taemin was going to get it, once Minho got dry again. His powers weren’t working at all, as he couldn’t even form a little spark, thanks to Taemin’s antics. His breath got caught in his throat when Taemin came even closer to him and nonchalantly trailed his fingers along his face, almost as if he was tracing his features. For a creature that seemed so delicate, Taemin really was quite compelling.
Although he had Minho under his control for a while, Taemin couldn’t help but feel a little scared. If Minho wanted to, he could increase his flames so much that they would evaporate all of his water. So, he couldn’t push him too much. Although he knew they were in fact, opposites, he really wanted to see if he could change Minho a little bit. He pushed a bit of Minho’s long hair behind his ear, while he lightly ran his tongue along his lower lip.
Why was the sprite looking at him like he wished to eat him? It had been a really long time since Minho had even interacted with anyone. He preferred to stay by himself, but right now, he couldn’t help but wonder if having some company was indeed as bad as he thought it would be.
“Get away from me, sprite. I don’t want to hurt you”.
“I told you before, my name is Taemin. You can’t hurt me. Not when you can’t use your powers”.
“You don’t know me. I’m so angry right now, that I could snap you like a twig”.
“Are you angry because of that girl? I am, too. I had also tried to devour her. If we work together, we can have our revenge on the one who defeated us”.
Minho knew Taemin was right. A combination of fire and water would prove to be difficult for the light being to control. At this time, this alliance was the best. He nodded slowly when Taemin sent forth another shower of water droplets at him. Before he could figure out what was happening, he felt Taemin gently press his lips against his cheek.
Tenderly moving an errant lock of hair from Jinki’s forehead, Jonghyun smiled as he looked down at Jinki dozing on his lap. Off late, he’d got comfortable enough to touch him even unconsciously. It was a good thing that they’d had each other. Jinki was more powerful during the day, whereas his strength was at night. They’d both fed recently, but Jonghyun always wanted to make sure that there was something more for Jinki to have before the sun set for the day. Slowly easing Jinki’s head from his lap, Jonghyun set out to capture another prey. He heard the rustling of the bushes nearby and prepared to strike the expected herd of deer that would graze there. However, once he’d sprung to the other side of the bush, instead of a deer, there was only a dark mass. He watched in silence as the shadow creature made himself visible in his true form. Unlike Jonghyun and Jinki, shadow creatures were able to use their powers all throughout the day. Jonghyun hissed in pain as the creature bared his fangs and attacked him, stabbing him in the wrist with his knife-like nails. Jonghyun could feel his strength leaving him, as he continued to fight. All of a sudden, his mind went black and he fell to his knees. The shadow creature prepared to strip the vampire of his shadow when he was hit by a bolt of light. Jinki glanced at Jonghyun’s unconscious form in horror before assuming his fighting stance. Since it was still day, he was able to imbibe more strength from the sun. He continued striking the shadow creature in anger without even pausing for breath and only stopped when the creature disappeared. Lifting Jonghyun, he walked back to their spot in the forest. Filled with fear, he let out a sigh of relief when Jonghyun opened his eyes.
“I thought I’d lost you, Jonghyun-ah. Don’t ever leave me like that”
“Does that mean you were worried about me?”
Jonghyun saw Jinki blush at the question and smiled.
“Of course I was. I care for you, Jonghyun. I can’t even imagine how I’d survive without you by my side”
“I love you too, Jinki-ah”
Jinki felt his heart beat faster as Jonghyun cupped his face in his hands, and kissed him. As he opened his mouth and deepened the kiss, he felt Jonghyun moan as he slipped his tongue inside his mouth

Meanwhile, Kibum was furious at being defeated by the light demon. Assuming his shadow form yet again, he wandered about the forest searching for the creature that would be able to defeat the demon once and for all. He followed the trail of burnt leaves until he reached the lair of the fire fairy, who looked as impressive as he’d imagined. With long dark hair with red streaks, there was no doubt that his main power was to control fire. He would be the perfect ally to take down the demon and vampire.
Minho was surprised to see what looked like a dark cloud approach him. He gaped as the cloud turned into a blonde creature with a dark aura swirling around him.
“Get out of my lair, creature or prepare to suffer the consequences”
“I’ve come to ask for your alliance, fairy, and not to fight”
Kibum saw the fire fairy falter a little, and took his chance.
“We have a common enemy, fairy. We can defeat the light demon together”
Minho seemed rather suspicious as this was the second creature to approach him for an alliance. The shadow creature was handsome, albeit not pretty like the water sprite, but Minho still felt a tiny spark of interest.
“Alright. Let me know when you plan to strike. I know a water sprite, Taemin who also has a score to settle with him”
“Thank you, fairy. I’m sure we will work well together. I’m Kibum”
“Minho”
Kibum shook Minho's’ outstretched hand and laughed, just imagining the downfall of the demon who had bested him. The demon and vampire surely had another think coming. It would be three against two, and there were no doubts as to who would win this battle.
Kibum spent his time thinking of how they could overpower the light demon. Three versus two would just make it too easy. If they didn't want the demon to have much strength, they would have to attack at sunset, before the vampire brought him something to feed on. He'd watched them both for quite a long time so that he'd become familiar with their habits and routine. He knew the vampire could be easily overpowered, and that it was the light demon who needed to be watched. From his last encounter with them, he knew that if they were separated, they could easily be defeated. The best time to attack would be when the vampire had gone hunting while the demon slept. Fire, water and his shadow. He was glad he'd secured this alliance. The combination of their powers was required in order to make his plan work.
Meanwhile, Minho hid a smile as he watched Taemin dancing daintily and gracefully along the bank. He created little step like waves and continued to dance his way higher and higher above. He was amazed by how flexible Taemin was, but then again water sprites were the most graceful of all the creatures in the forest. He couldn't stop thinking about that fleeting little kiss Taemin has given him. Truth be told, Taemin was all he could think about. Fire and Water. They were opposites. The only thing that seemed to worry him was the fact that he could destroy Taemin in a heartbeat. Perhaps it would make more sense for him to choose the shadow creature, but he was unable to get Taemin out of his thoughts.
Taemin enjoyed the attention he was getting from Minho. He knew he had greatly startled the fire fairy, but it had definitely been worth it. From the corner of his eye, he saw Minho smile, which made him feel good. Minho's good looks became even more apparent when he smiled. Smiling to himself, Taemin threw up a shower of the smallest water droplets directly at the sun that was shining on Minho's face so the tiny sparkles appeared to be mini rainbows.
Enthralled by the sparkly water droplets, Minho watched, fascinated as Taemin continued to dazzle him. He had never experienced anything like this before. He laughed, happily and was rewarded with such a smile so filled with sunny warmth that made him doubt why he had always chosen to be so reclusive. He saw a dark cloud approaching them from a distance and knew that it was Kibum, the shadow creature who'd come to inform them that it was time to strike. He beckoned to Taemin to step out of the water and waited for Kibum to assume his true form.
"Minho, the demon is on his own now. This will be the perfect time to strike"
Taemin simply shrugged his shoulders and followed Kibum and Minho to where the demon lay, resting. He turned to the shadow creature to hear what his plan was. In order to gain control over the light demon, they first had to make sure that he couldn't see a thing. Minho lit a spark and set it to the water droplets that Taemin threw to the sky. With a sizzle, the water evaporated and turned into a light mist, to which Kibum sent a bit of his shadow, just to test the waters.
***************************************************
Jinki awoke with a start, to find that everything was dark. Had he slept through the sunset? This had never happened before. He looked around to find that Jonghyun was nowhere to be found, which was odd. He'd usually be back before it got dark. When he looked up at the sky, he could see darkness only in the area above him, which kept increasing. He took a step back to figure out what was happening when he heard the sound of a twig breaking.
"Jonghyun-ah, is that you?"
"You wish. You thought you'd seen the last of us, hadn't you?"
Just then, the darkness reduced and he could make out the shape of three silhouettes. As they stepped forward, he saw the shadow creature whom he'd defeated a few days ago. He was back, with reinforcements this time. Focusing his energy, he let out a beam of light towards the creature who was immediately protected by a shield of water. Dodging as a ball of fire flew at him, he hoped Jonghyun was alright. True, he could defeat each of them separately, but without his whole power, he didn't have much of a chance. He jumped as a cold mist hit his face, followed by the dark cloud that blinded him, once more.
Jinki could feel himself growing weaker, especially since there was no more sun. If he had to stay alive, he needed to feed immediately. It was beginning to get increasingly difficult for him to keep dodging their teamed attacks. The worst part was the dark mist, which overpowered his feeble beams of light, not allowing him to see a thing. He managed to dodge a lot of the attacks by relying only on his hearing.
Taemin paid keen attention to the light demon and noticed how he cocked his head to one side and then jumped out of the way when Minho flung a fireball at him. So, the demon has a keen sense of hearing. All they had to do, was increase the noise around them, and that way, he wouldn't be able to escape them. Winking at Minho, he pointed to a tree which had little dark bats hanging from the branches, and grinned at their telepathy when Minho immediately set fire to it.
Surrounded by a dark mass of bats, with their screeching and squeaking all around him, Jinki couldn't focus on his enemies to figure out the direction of their attacks. He fell flat on his back, after taking quite a big hit from the fire fairy. Was this it? Was this how it was all going to end? He closed his eyes and thought of how Jonghyun would manage. Once he was gone, it was just a matter of time before the shadow creature defeated Jonghyun. He'd just discovered his true feelings for Jonghyun and he was about to lose him.
Meanwhile, Jonghyun had completed his hunt, when he spotted that a certain area of the forest had suddenly grown dark. This could only be the work of the shadow creature he had encountered earlier. Filled with foreboding, Jonghyun ran as fast as he could, towards where he'd left a sleeping Jinki. The clearing smelled of smoke. Praying that he wasn't too late, he rushed to the side of Jinki, who lay on the ground, with his eyes fluttering. He saw the three silhouettes, of the other creatures in the forest, who had chosen to attack Jinki when he was alone. He cradled Jinki's body in his arms, with tears streaming down his face, as he raised his face to look at those who had done this to him. As he had expected, it was the work of the shadow creature, but he'd managed to involve a fire fairy and water sprite as well. He wouldn't let them come any closer. He would protect Jinki with his life.
Taemin felt a sudden pang as he watched the vampire rock the demon's body in his arms, his whole body shivering as he sobbed. Had they gone too far? He didn't want to kill the demon but just wanted to hurt him. The demon had a tiny bit of power left, but would definitely not last through the night. He saw the demon raise his hand and touch the vampire's face.
"I don't feel good, my love"
Taemin continued to just stare at the demon whose light started fading again. It was a sure sign of his weakness, which meant that he would die once it faded completely.
"You can't leave me. Take my blood" said the vampire, tears streaming down his face.
Stepping aside to wipe away his own tears, Taemin heard an eerie sound in the distance, as his vision was shrouded in red. Stunned, he glanced at Minho and Kibum whose faces matched his fear.
Minho couldn't believe his eyes, as he looked up at the blood moon. It happened very rarely, but each time it did, it caused the werewolves in the forest to go berserk, almost as if there was someone else controlling them. He remembered the time it had happened last. That was when he had lost his family. Only the light demon was strong enough to battle them, but he was close to death, because of him.
He stepped towards the vampire, who had cut his arm by now and was frantically trying to get out enough blood to save the demon.
"Step aside, vampire"
"You'll have to go through me first"
"I want to help you. Look around you. Tonight is the night of the blood moon. I need the light demon back, more than you do. He's the only one strong enough to help us face those werewolves"
Jonghyun stared at the fire fairy in disbelief. He couldn't believe that he wasn't trying to hurt Jinki anymore. He tried to flex his muscles to allow his blood to flow out faster into Jinki's mouth, but it wasn't enough. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked into the deep blue eyes of the water sprite.
"You must be tired, vampire. Let me help"
Taemin slashed his wrist and let his sky blue blood join the vampire's into the demon's mouth. This was the only way they could bring the demon's strength back. Both he and the vampire had lost a good amount of blood, but the demon's light still wasn't bright enough. He looked at Minho and Kibum, wondering what they should do next.
"This won't do. He is still too weak"
At this rate, it was going to take them ages to get the light demon back, not to mention the fact that Taemin and the vampire had lost too much of their blood already. They really didn't have much time. He could hear the howls coming closer and closer.
"We need to move fast. It is only a matter of time till they find us. My lair would be the safest for now. Taemin and the vampire need time to recuperate and get their strength back"
Between them, Kibum and Minho managed to lift Jinki and guide the weary Taemin and Jonghyun to safety. Kibum felt his conscience prick him for the first time in years, as he watched the way the vampire was struggling to save his friend. He truly only wanted to teach the demon a lesson. He hadn't thought of the consequences even once, before just charging. As part of his penance, he offered to go out and search for prey while Minho watched over the three beings in his care. Shifting to his shadow form, he glided about, until he saw a large wild boar that he knew would give them all a significant amount of strength. Attacking it ferociously, he absorbed the carcass into his shadow as he couldn't afford to carry the meat back, especially when there were zombie werewolves on the loose. On his way back to the other side of the forest, he spotted a lone werewolf and took his chance to figure out their weakness. Creeping stealthily, he grabbed a bit of the werewolf's shadow and started to reel it in. The werewolf jumped up immediately and looked around, its eyes glowing red. Kibum moved away quickly, as he saw the wolf sniff the area where he was, just a moment ago. With their heightened sense of smell, there was no doubt that these creatures were indeed, formidable.
"Minho, I'm worried. What if we don't get the demon back to his full strength in time? I can give him some more of my blood"
"Don't. You're already too weak, Taemin. Once Kibum gets back with food, we'll all feel a lot better"
Jonghyun was amazed at how the sprite and fairy supported each other. They seemed to be opposites, just like him and Jinki and they already had a spark between them. He blinked back his tears as Jinki cleared his throat faintly.
"Jonghyun-ah, you look tired. Rest a while"
"Not unless you're back, Jinki-ah. your light is still faint. I'm afraid to leave you, even for a minute"
Hearing the love in the vampire's voice, Taemin felt happy that the demon was loved by someone even more than he loved him.
"Jonghyun, don't worry. We won't let anything happen to him"
Just then, Kibum returned with his prey and they all fed together. Although the quantity wasn't enough, all except Jinki were able to regain their strength. Throughout their meal, Minho's brows were furrowed as he kept thinking of how they were going to face the beasts. Now that Kibum had seen them firsthand, he knew they needed to be extremely vigilant.
"Kibum, I've got it. The demon draws his light from the sun. If we generate that amount of heat, we can bring his strength back"
"I don't understand how this can happen. In case you haven't noticed, it is night now and we can't wait till the sun rises"
"I control fire. If I can increase my power to its maximum, I think I would be able to generate as much heat as the sun, which the demon could easily absorb"
"Let's try it. I think you're right. This has a chance to work"
His blue eyes glittering with unshed tears, Taemin led Minho away from the others for a few moments.
"I'm glad that you're able to do the right thing. I'm really going to miss you, Minho. Know that I'll always care for you"
"Taemin, I don't understand what you're talking about"
"With that amount of heat, I will evaporate. I won't be able to withstand it at all"
"Trust me. I won't let you slip away from me. I'll protect you always"
After dropping a featherlight kiss to Taemin's open mouth, Minho walked towards the other beings. Taking Jinki's hand, he led him to the mouth of his lair.
"Kibum, shield Taemin and the vampire. Neither of them will be able to handle the heat. I'll take the demon to a secluded area in the forest and use my powers. Don't leave the lair until you hear the sound of our return"
"Go. I'll protect them"
As Minho walked away with the demon, Kibum spread his aura around the lair. He manipulated his shadow to form a wall that covered the mouth of the cave and waited patiently. His aura was powerful enough to absorb the smoke that would be generated by Minho and strong enough to keep the heat away from the cave.
Jinki was stunned as he was led to a secluded portion of the forest. Never in his wildest dreams had he even imagined that the fire fairy would help him. After all, they were natural enemies that hated each other.
"Wait here, demon. I'll move a little further away and then turn up the heat. See if you're able to absorb it"
Why was he helping him? Whatever the reason was, Jinki was just thankful that he wouldn't be leaving Jonghyun alone.
Minho grunted as he tried to increase his flames more and more in order to reach the same level of heat as the sun. Try as he might, he was unable to remove the thoughts of the water sprite from the back of his mind. He could smell the singed leaves of all the trees that surrounded him but knew this wasn't the highest he could go. This wasn't even close enough. Struggling, he put every last bit of energy he had and increased his flames tenfold and scorched the entire area.
Jinki watched the fire fairy try his hardest to reach his highest potential, and was shocked as he saw his hair turn into flames. With the way he was going, it was just a matter of minutes before the fairy would ignite the entire forest. The ground the fairy stood on was covered in hellish flames, and Jinki stepped closer so that he could absorb the energy. Bracing himself, he shouted to Minho to fire a beam at him.
What was wrong with the demon? Minho shuddered to think of what would happen if the heat of the beam he sent was too low. If it was high enough, then the demon would easily be able to absorb it, but he would be attacked if it wasn't great enough.
"Demon, wait. I don't think this is hot enough. You could get hurt"
"I trust you. Do it. The sooner we finish this, the sooner we can get back to the others"
Minho took a deep breath before creating a beam with all the power and energy he could muster. Watching it hurtle towards the demon, he felt a small tremor of fear touch his heart. He heard the sound of a small explosion, and fell to his knees, just hoping that he had missed.
*********************************************************************
Meanwhile, Kibum had started to absorb all of the smoke that was created by Minho's heat into his aura. After a while, it started getting too hot even for him to handle. Hoping this heat had been enough for the demon, he stretched his aura even further, to protect Taemin and the vampire.
Taemin, on the other hand, had crept to the darkest corner so as to not be affected by the heat. He could feel himself getting more and more heated by the minute. This was indeed what he had been afraid of. It was just a matter of time before he evaporated.
Jonghyun watched the little sprite cower in a corner, and felt genuinely worried. Rushing to his side, he took his hand to find that it was warm. The normally sapphire blue eyes had turned into sky blue and he watched Taemin struggling to breathe. The sprite needed to be taken to the stream, and fast, if he was to be saved.
Kibum saw a flash of light and knew there would be a heatwave that would hit them shortly.
"Brace yourselves. I don't know if I would be able to stop this one"
Closing his eyes, he struggled to keep the protection in place with every last ounce of his strength. Feeling a huge wave of heat hitting his aura, he finally withdrew it all and turned around to see that the vampire had protected Taemin with his own body.
"Jonghyun, you...you protected me. Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Taemin. Let's get you to the stream. You need water"
*******************************************************
Once the smoke had cleared, Minho went closer to see the damage that he'd caused when his vision was marred by a dazzling flash of light. With his heart in his throat, he walked towards the light to find the demon, restored to his full health and glory.
"Thank you, Minho"
"You're welcome, demon"
"You can call me Jinki"
"Let's go back to my lair, Jinki. The attack may start anytime"
**********************************************************
Fully hydrated, Taemin and the others were back at the lair when they saw Minho and Jinki return, arm in arm. With uncharacteristic emotion in his eyes, Minho swung an elated Taemin around while Jonghyun and Jinki embraced each other.
"It's almost time. We need to prepare ourselves to fight for our lives. These werewolves are dangerous"
"All of their senses have heightened since the last time this happened, and we are just five against twenty or thirty of them"
"If we bring them near the stream, I'd be able to use that water as well"
"That's a good idea, Taemin. We've all got our strengths, and we'll be able to take them on and defeat them for sure"
There was no doubt about it. It was finally time. The five beings got into a V formation as they heard the howls approaching them. A pack usually had 20 wolves, but when they were affected, all of the zombie werewolves would form a pack together. At that moment, Jinki and Minho were the strongest in the group and were going to lead the attack. Stretching his aura all around the area, Kibum was able to form a sort of screen so the wolves wouldn't be able to see them. Bracing themselves mentally, they waited for the wolves to attack. Less than five minutes later, they could see around 50 wolves snarling and rushing towards them. As Kibum had expected, although their vision was not clear, these wolves clearly relied on their superior and heightened sense of smell to pinpoint the location of all the beings. Minho and Jinki continued to hurl fire and light at the wolves and managed to slow them down for a while when they suddenly changed direction and seemed to focus only on Taemin. The gentle water sprite was the easiest to scent. Although he kept pushing them away with waves, they just kept advancing on him.
"Kibum, can you stretch your aura over Taemin? They seem to be sensing only him"
"They seem to be a lot stronger than we thought, Jonghyun. We won't be able to destroy them at all"
"If we can just hold them off till the blood moon is over, that would be more than enough"
"They're too strong. When we cut off their vision, they're using their hearing and sense of smell"
"Not for long"
Jonghyun sent a mind strike to the wolf closest to Taemin and watched as it stopped in its tracks. Maybe, just maybe he could be able to hypnotize it. He slowly crept into the wolf's brain to hypnotize it into stopping the attack but failed as the wolf wasn't in control of its actions. He continued to send mind strikes until he was finally able to hit the part that controlled the olfactory senses, which made the wolf fall, spread-eagled to the ground, and unable to move. Although these effects weren't lasting, this would hold them off for a long time. From the corner of his eye, he could see Jinki and Minho fighting side by side, with both resorting to physical attacks as well as their powers. It warmed his heart to see those who were natural enemies, fighting together and protecting each other. He continued to use mind strikes for a few more wolves until he felt a headache like he'd never experienced before.
Minho saw around five wolves lying motionless by Taemin's feet, and spotted Jonghyun on his knees, with his head in his hands. Shooting more beams of fire, he rushed to his side.
"Jonghyun, are you alright?"
"Mind strikes work on these wolves, but they're too strong in their current state. If they're a lot weaker, I will easily be able to turn off their olfactory senses and stun them from inside"
Jinki's knuckles were raw and bloody, as he continued to wreak havoc on the werewolf army. With his strength, he was the only one who was able to get as close as possible to the wolves and strike them directly, without getting too injured. Feeling a light spray of water on his face, he turned around to find Jonghyun on his knees.
"Jonghyun-ah"
"Don't worry about me. Just keep attacking. I've figured out how to stun them"
By now, more than half of the wolves were weakened significantly from the injuries they had sustained, but the rest of them were still strong. Once again, using their combined powers, Minho, Taemin, and Jinki continued to strike. Panting, they looked around them to see that all the wolves were now on the ground, struggling to stand up. Immediately, Jonghyun stood up and used up the last of his strength in sending a group strike to all the minds, thereby rendering them unconscious.
Immensely worried, Jinki caught Jonghyun as he swayed and almost fell.
"You've done well, Jonghyun-ah. Now, rest. I will watch over you always"
Smiling weakly, Jonghyun tucked a strand of Jinki's hair behind his ear.
"I know, Jinki-ah. I love you. Always have, always will"
The five of them huddled together on the grass with Jonghyun snuggling close to Jinki, watching the blood moon fade to its normal color. Things would now slowly get back to normal, and those injured werewolves would soon be able to control themselves. For the next 50 odd years or so, the forest and its beings would be safe.
Slipping an arm around Minho's waist, Taemin pulled him closer and rested his head onto his shoulder.
"We make a great team, don't we?"
"Yes, we do. All five of us. Together"
You’re my MVP
Standing among the crowd, with your heart beating faster, you waited in line to see Oppa. You had spent a week making a beautiful sign for him that read 'Saranghae Jinki Oppa'. This was going to be the best moment of your life, as you'd been looking forward to this day for the last two months. As you spent your time thinking of this and feeling nostalgic, the doors opened. Finding yourself inside the hall, you couldn't help squealing with delight along with the other fans. The pearlescent sky blue wave that stretched along the hall made you feel quite at home. With a whole lot of cheering, he took the stage along with the other members. There he was, looking absolutely divine and handsome in those faded jeans and leather jacket. Stroking his brown hair, Jinki grinned as the fans started cheering. Almost fainting with shock as he smiled at you after noticing your sign, you tried hard not to faint from sheer delight. The very fact that your Oppa had noticed you was enough to make your whole year, along with the fact that you'd made new friends who would last for your lifetime. Jinki suddenly raised his hand and threw a teddy bear into the audience which, by a stroke of extreme luck, you were able to catch, thereby having a physical memory of this absolutely amazing day. Hearing a slight sniff, you looked around to see a little girl crying to her mother saying "Mom, I wish I'd caught that. I wish I was her. She is so lucky".
Walking up to the girl and wiping away the tears that stained her cheeks, you held the bear out to her saying, "This is for you. I can see that you're a really big fan, and I want you to always remember this day". After the concert, you felt tears sting your eyes as Jinki made his farewell speech. If only there was a way for him to stay here, at this moment always. Turning away to return back home, you found yourself approached by the Manager who wanted you to stay behind for a while. Was something wrong? Why were you asked to wait? As you stared at the ceiling, just contemplating, you felt your heart leap to your chest as Jinki approached you, smiling. Gently wrapping his arms around you and holding you close, he whispered: "What you did for that child really touched my heart". Taking out his phone, he took a selca with you, after asking for permission and walked back to join the members. Reaching home and opening your twitter to post about the concert, you felt a beatific smile creep across your face as you saw his tweet. Jinki had posted the picture he had taken with you, with the caption, "Today, I met someone at our concert. To this girl with the pure heart: From today, I'm your fan. You're my MVP"
