My neighbors have a German Shepard that I am near certain they purposefully keep in an untrained hell hound state for "home security" purposes. She doesn't just bark at every living thing, she is snarling LUNGING. I know she can't jump the fence which is the only reason I ignore her. I've encountered her on walks and they have to lift her off her front legs and brace her between their legs when people walk by. This is not normal! Please work on your dog!

Correct! For beginners, I would recommend learning katakana and hiragana first. I personally used Kodansha's workbooks for this. They include a set of flashcards at the back. Drill this until you can comfortably read both, but also don't spend so much time on it (no more than like a week) because this is also a skill you will hone over time. From there, you can start with basically any of the textbook series. These will give you a good start to some basic vocabulary and grammar.

I can't remember my exact trajectory from here, but I never really went on to 2nd book in these textbook series. I focused on learning kanji and conversation practice.

I personally use Wanikani for kanji learning/practice. HOWEVER, I didn't see the BIGGEST gains until I started combining Wanikani with native reading materials (reading materials made with native speakers in mind). Kanji stuck so much better in my head when I'd be seeing them in news articles, books or signs/ads around town.

Conversation practice is conversation practice. You can learn a lot from even other language learners. I've wholesale stolen grammar points from others. When I was combining Wanikani and reading materials with regular conversation practice (minimum 3 times a week for an hour), I went from barely N4 to passing N2. I was living in Japan at this time where I went out of my way to use/read Japanese, but I also did structured time to study because it's just false that you will magically become fluent by virtue of existing in Japan.

I used italki to schedule my online conversation practice, even to today, and I highly recommend. Important thing to remember is that, overwhelmingly, the tutors on italki need YOU to tell THEM what you want. If you have no idea what you want out of these lessons, they will feel very meandering/possibly useless.

I should also say there's a period of time where this feel like torture and like you're not making any progress. It's normal. Do not be discouraged. Keep going.
