Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āYouāre acting as if you just met me yesterday! Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā You know I donāt like this kind of place.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā "How was I supposed to know you hate museums? Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Like, no offense, but who the fuck hates museums?"
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āTried to depress me, maybe?ā
Ā Ā Ā "Okay, you know what, I'm never taking you anywhere ever again. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Rude."

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He's twenty, and really, he's not sureĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā how to deal with this. He was so usedĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā to that ticker on his wrist counting down.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā But today is different. He's so close toĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā zero. And he's not sure how to deal.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Scott, his best friend, his buddy, sinceĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā they had both been in kindergarten foundĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā his soul mate a couple years ago. AĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā girl with pale skin and dark hair, and theyĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā had been happy for all of two years.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā But Allison had died. And his best friendĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā had been left all alone.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He's seen it before, people whose otherĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā half died young, and even, rarely, someĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā people whose counter had just stoppedĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā because their other half had died beforeĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā they met.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā And that was what frightened him most.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He was going to find whoever it was to-Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā day, and there was a chance that thatĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā person would die one day, way beforeĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā their time.Like his best friend's soul mate had, andlike his own mother had, far too young.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Lost in thought, he almost missed it, asĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā he got in line at the coffee shop. The blondeĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā in front of him dropped something, andĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā he reached to hand her the dropped folder.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā 00:00:00
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āStiles, I can barely stand anything. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā How did it even cross your mind Iād like this?ā
"Hey, you know, I tried, and so you can't blame me." Ā Ā Ā {Ā You can blame him, he doesn't think.Ā }

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Okay, usually Stiles was already antsy. It was a thing with him.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Antsy was his thing. He wasĀ always antsy. But the last weeks, Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā he'd only become more and more antsy. It wasĀ the counter. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He'd had his entire life, everyone had it. And everyone knew that Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā when the counter runs out, that's when you meet your soulmate.Ā He knew people whose counters had ended in kindergarten,other whose counters translated to them being at leastĀ fifty by the time the counter ran out. And his counter had beencounting down to today. Seventeen, and anxious.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Sometimes he figured it was all super unfair. He'd had crushes,Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā everybody got crushes, he was pretty sure of that. But if yourĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā counters didn't reach zero at the moment you met, that was that.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā You could crush all you want, but that meant like, absolutelyĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā nothing.And now the counter was almost at zero. This was the momenteverybody told you you were supposed to wait for, from the timeyou're old enough to understand what the numbers on your wristmean. That the moment your counter hits zero, you've foundĀ theone. And if you didn't like each other, t o u g h l u c k.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā There were people who ignored the counter, tried to find loveĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā without the counter. But those people were kind of pariahs,Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and he was weird enough without going against that stupidĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā line of numbers on his wrist.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ten seconds.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Five seconds.Don't be terrible, don't be terrible, don't be terrible has becomea chant inside his head. Somebody sits down at the study table.A boy with jawline that could cut glass, high cheekbones, andĀ a certain haughty look on his face, like he feels better than everyone else.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā 00:00:00

Stiles Stilinski is Night Vale born and bred, with a first name that requires a lot of humming and an extra head to pronounce, so heās just called Stiles.
His father part of the Sheriffās Secret Police, and his mother one of the people abducted with a black hood over their heads, never to be seen again, it was a love story for the ages. And what a story it was. But that can never be told to anyone. Ever. If you have heard the story, the Sheriffās Secret Police insists you put a black hood over your head in preparation of being picked up by them.
Of course, if he gets picked, he would be more than happy to join the Sheriffās Secret Police, but application is completely random and unexpected, so instead Stiles Stilinski sort of works at Night Vale Community Radio.
Well. He pretends to anyway, cause the current intern hasnāt disappeared yet, but heās pretty sure that itāll be his turn to intern soon enough.
Lydia laughed at Stilesā very exaggerated movements, he was honestly like a one man show sometimes. Entertaining, but a little ridiculous. The teacher would be gone half the lesson, judging by the duration of the film about something or other, but Lydia didnāt quite care. She was ahead in every class anyway, naturally.
Smirking like the cheshire cat, Lydia fluttered her eyelashes innocently across at Stiles. āSomething wrong?ā the redhead pressed, setting her pen down altogether now, not paying an ounce of attention to the movies being played.
Thinking about Lydia Martin naked wasn't exactly a new thing for Stiles, not really, but there was still the whole thing that this time it wasn't his own brain that had reminded him of the possibility that even Lydia Martin was sometimes naked.Ā
After a moment that seemed far longer than it probably was, he shook his head, catching the redhead's smirk, and he scrambled for words. "Nope, nothing wrong, nothing at all. Everything good." Or, as far as being distracted in that way was a good thing. "So, those sounds, huh. I er... Yeah no never mind."
Lydia choked on a laugh and simply went for a nod this time around, finally throwing Stiles a bone. āUh huh, Iāll take your word for it,ā she smiled, tapping her pen impatiently against the desk in an irregular rhythm, completely ignoring the video the teacher had put on while heād left the room.
"Stiles, sometimes, Iām really not even sure youāre a teenage boy," she rolled her eyes, "Think about when I might make undignified sounds. In my room.Ā Naked,āĀ the redhead couldnāt help but illustrate, just to make her point.
Stiles shook his head, rolling his eyes in a sign of mock exasperation. "Okay. Good." For a moment he swiveled around in his seat, the video playing in the front of the classroom vaguely registering in the back of his mind, but mostly distracted by somebody in the front of the class making an obnoxious sound. Probably Greenberg. Coach really was right, he was a pain in the ass.
Then he fell silent, staring slightly goggle-eyed at Lydia, mouth slightly agape. "I er..." He swallowed hard. "Yeah. Okay. I could totally imagine those, but that would render conversation null. Unless it's a ploy to do just that." His voice trailed off, distracted by the thought of Lydia Martin, naked, in her room, making "undignified sounds". Oh yeah.
"Completely natural, got it," Lydia nodded slowly, albeit a little dramatically. His theory made sense, but it was still fascinating to watch him think up a whole reasoning behind his ridiculous noise, just to ensure she didnāt think he was a total idiot.
"Oh really? Undignified sounds?" she raised a brow, a smirk slipping onto her lips. "And what kind ofĀ undignifiedĀ sounds might we be talking about,ā the redhead pressed, leaning forwards onĀ her elbows.
"Exactly. Very natural." Stiles nods once more for good measure, making sure it's clear that it is a Completely Natural Thing, the capitals asserting themselves in his head as an emphasis.
Then he grins widely, eyes lighting up, looking for all the world like a very excited five year old, or somewhere around that age. "Even you make undignified sounds, I'm sure." Stiles leans back, thinking about it. He'd not heard her make any sounds as such, but he was pretty sure women made as many weird sounds as men.
"Maybe you snore. Or hiccup weirdly."

Lydia couldnāt help but stare at Stiles as he explained the process, trying again not to laugh. He was just so comical it was almost impossible. With another shake of her head, she smacked her lips together and shrugged, āIām not quite sure I understand, but sure, letās go for ātotally natural.āā
"You know, Stiles, I wonder a lot if we should be putting you back in Eichen House, youāve clearly got a lot of things ⦠not quite in order up there," she teased.
A heavy sigh, followed by throwing his head back into his neck, and another dramatic arm gesture. "It really is completely natural. Promise." So he wasn't entirely sure if other people actually made that sound, and he might have bullshitted most of the esophagus theory, but it sounded likely enough to him to be true.
He pursed his lips at Lydia, "Haha, very funny." At least he had taken his meds, so at least mildly able to focus on stuff. "I bet even you make some pretty undignified sounds sometimes."
Lydia finally let the laughter spill from her lips, shaking her head at the boy just a seat in front of her. āWhat evenĀ wasĀ that?ā she arched a brow, wondering what on earth could have possibly possessed him to make that sort of sound.
Stiles was quiet for a moment, watching somebody go by who was frowning pretty hard at him, before launching into an explanation. "Okay, so you know when you yawn, right? Sometimes there'll still be like a tiny bit of air in your esophagus when you yawn, and then that happens. But only with the really big ones. Like that one." He gestured with his hands while talking, eyes sometimes shifting to keep an eye on their surroundings.
"Totally natural, okay."
