Light It Up
New Yearâs eve wasnât a significant event for witches; it didnât fall on the cycle of the moon or stars, it was a date entirely contrived of by humans. And that was what made it the perfect day for revelry! With no sacred rites to observe or spells to cast, Mia could celebrate the dawn of the new year in the same way humans did âby throwing an over the top party and getting blitzed.
No one was turned away from Miaâs extravaganza, whether she knew them or not, as long as they didnât do anything stupid, like attacking someone or just being a dick. Out back, a roaring bonfire blazed against the dark sky, and inside, upbeat music played, while a bowl of heavily spiked punch kept magically refilling itself. The place was decorated with streamers and balloons, and a digital clock over the fireplace was counting down, in neon red numbers, to midnight.
Mia herself was in the back yard, reclining in a lawn chair with a red solo cup full of punch, watching the fire burn. âI suppose this is the part where weâre supposed to make resolutions, right? Iâve tried it a few times, but Iâve never actually managed to finish any. What about you, is there anything you plan on doing in the New Year?â
âNo.â Calvin shook his head. He wasnât the type to make New Yearâs Resolutions. In all honesty, they didnât make any sense to him. People would say they would be do different or do things differently. Or maybe they said theyâd change habits or whatever else theyâd say, and by the beginning of February, youâd think the year hadnât changed at all. âI donât bother with all of that. Itâs a waste of time in my opinion. But thatâs just my opinion. By all means, if someone wants to have New Yearâs Resolutions, and they actually stick with them though? All the power to them.â
puppy dog eyes are wide as the item is shown to him, brows shooting upwards. âwoah!â heâs excited, leaning on the edge of his seat, palms flat on the table. the small thing on the otherâs phone screen has this puppy so excited, scooting close. âshow me again!!â
âright!â calvin restarted the video, shifting so lucas could see more of the phone screen. âi had the same reaction when i first saw it. good to know iâm not the only one fascinated.â he made sure all the volume was up and the phoneâs brightness. âi actually just saw the video today.â

âthatâs rough.â will could relate, in a way, to an appreciation for antiques, though for him it had a lot more to do with a longing for a time before the internet existed and cameras were everywhere. âanything special about it? beyond rarity and age, i mean.â
âno. but thatâs what i love about it. itâs a rare find. you wonât find her anywhere. and i donât even want her for resale or even for use. i just want to know sheâs mine, you get me?â smiling, calvin nodded and watched the screen with intensity. âtwenty more minutes before sheâs either mine or she slips away.â

âi wouldnât say a moot point exactly, more of a⌠conversational black hole.â the otherâs met with a smirk, hands clutching at his tin for a cigarette â old habits die hard â though now the guilt of his actions is no longer an issue. âitâs interesting for a while, i suppose, but then itâs just tedious, lacklustre, endless.â like the shelves that line his walls that calvin is now paging through, fingers tracing spines while ambrose flicks a match against the nicotine. âthereâs only so many times you can discuss the impact of consumer culture in nabokovâs lolita without seeming a total bore. which of course, i am.â heâs only half-way joking. in the years heâs had to dwell, readingâs one of the few pursuits heâs managed not to tire of, cigarette slipped between his lips as he offers the wolf a roll-up.Â
âiâve never seen sex and the city. or, perhaps more seasonal, love actually. nor the notebook, notting hill, anything, say, post 1991 that falls into the thematic genre romantic comedy.â comedies arenât his thing. nor is romance. heâll take a true crime story or psychological thriller over stunted chemistry and canned laughter any day. âdificult to find an evening in which to marathon cinema when iâm rooted to a river for eight hours each nightfall. but go off, i supposeâŚâ and the words sound foreign on his lips, exposing, like a mother using language as an attempt to connect with a withdrawing teenage son.
âwhat?â calvinâs eyes widen, and he has a bright look on his face. âtell me youâre kidding. youâve never seen the notebook? i mean, not even sex and the city? everyoneâs seen sex and the city. and love actually? alan rickmanâs in that!â calvin shook his head in disbelief. âlisten, we have to put a pause on the 1920s movie marathon. incroyable.â he smiles, trying to remember if he had the movies on DVDs or not. Netflix was cool and all, but calvin was as old school as they come. âhow about a movie night on me, ambrose?â
the first time calvin had met ambrose, he damned near caught a heart attack. calvin had encountered enough different species in faulk hollow, so he wasnât surprised when he found out the man was a ghost, he just hadnât expected run into him when he had.Â
âi feel like asking you if youâve read any classic novel would be a moot point.â he chuckled lightly, looking over at ambrose as he twirled the first edition Ozma of Oz book in his hand. âIs there any novel you havenât read, ambrose? a 1920â˛s film you havenât watched? i mean, you promised me a movie marathon, and i have yet to have that promised fulfilled, pal.â @foxglovc
He had only been in this place for a year, and he was wondering if he should continue to remain here. The only person that is keeping him here is his protective nature for Elena. The world was dark and chaotic as is, to leave her behind in thatâŚ.he really couldnât. As he entered the small coffee shop, he ordered his coffee black. Seeing someone had dropped something on the floor before him, he reached down picking it up. âExcuse me, you dropped this.â
âwhat?â calvin turned around, surprised to see the man handing him his wallet. âoh. thank you.â clumsy. he didnât even notice heâd dropped it. he was broke enough as it is. âthank you, really. i didnât even realize iâd dropped it.â he turned to pay for his coffee, shoving his wallet back into his pocket. âwhy donât i pay for your coffee? as a thank you, i insist.âÂ

her  father  had  always  scolded  imogene  over  reckless  spending   â  which,  by  his  definition,  meant  anything  that  related  to  fun.  however,  heâs  not  here  &  she  has  the  cash  to  spare.  â  bid  five  hundred,  â  she  enthuses,  smiling  though  her  eyes  exude  sincerity.  â  i  mean  it,  five  hundred.  iâve  got  it  covered  â-  like  you  said,  canât  pass  the  opportunity,  right  ?  â
calvin practically choked on his coffee. âi donât have that kind of money.â he hadnât even intended on bidding half that much. âwait, what. did you just say youâd cover it?â he pulled his bottom lip between his teeth and glanced at this laptop screen almost wistfully. âokay, okay.â he made a soft noise before he hurriedly bid the $500. he winced, hoping the person didnât dare to go any higher than that. they werenât as looney as he was, right? âthanks.â his eyes were a little wide from disbelief, and he glanced at the laptop when he heard a ping. âi.. i won. i won the --â he tried not to squeal, but he was obviously ecstatic. âimogene, i owe you big time.â

âi donât get why you even went that high.â will would never understand the sort of people who couldnât just go to the store and buy a walkman for fifty bucks. or else just keep their music on their phone. âthat thing looks older than i am.â
âthat is exactly why i want it.â calvinâs eyes practically lit up, and he tried not to seem too excited about a bloody walkman. âitâs a rarity. you canât find these in stores or anywhere else for that matter, not even antique shops. sheâs a beauty.â calvin sighed and glanced at his computer screen. âand i want her.â
đ - what fictional duo do you and your partner/best friend act like?
well, before i moved here... oh gosh this is going to be the silliest answer possible but .. kim possible and ron stoppable, minus the whole falling in love thing. other than that, we were inseparable? we went to school together. she didnât really fight crime but it almost felt that way? she made sure everyone in school was all right. headed this feminist club at the high school. i miss her ... a lot.

đ¸ - whatâs the most memorable dream youâve had?
oh ⌠um .. it was about my parents. they were surprising me with a car for my sixteenth birthday. funny thing, that has never happened? not the dream, i mean it never happened in real life. but itâs something that usually always happens on someoneâs sixteenth birthday, you know? it was so vivid. i could practically smell the strawberry shampoo my momâs always using. i could feel, hear and touch and taste .. everything. it was a good dream.
