Every football fan, from Burnley to Manchester, will go into the weekend with the hope that this season, their team can create memories that will live forever. Seven months from now these hopes and dreams will either be realised or crushed, so it’s important to savour the excitement building up towards the first kick-off to the season for as long as you can. New signings have come in, old faces have found new homes, and all the pre-season miles have now been completed. So with that in mind, WL2T decided to jump on the prediction bandwagon with my thoughts on the four teams who will finish in the top four this season.

  So WL2T, Who’s your pick for the League this season?

Leicester City proved that if you win a relegation battle one season, you can win the league the next, so with that in mind my team for the title this season is Sunderland… All joking aside, my pick for the title this season, sadly (I’m a Liverpool fan, so this hurts) has to be Manchester United. No team that finished lower than third the previous season has won the League the next until Leicester broke all records.

I expect Manchester United to continue this new trend

Manchester United kicked off the transfer window by sacking LVG and replacing him with serial winner Jose Mourinho. Love him or loath him, the man produces results. His methods won’t be pleasing on the eye, but unlike LVG, pundits won’t be talking about this because Jose is a master in deflecting criticism away from his players and style so that all we ever talk about its the Portuguese man of war!

Mourinho has a habit of making an instant impact, winning the title in his first season at Chelsea and Inter Milan, and eventually winning the league for every club he’s managed. Mourinho’s ambition was always to lead the red devils, And United have backed his ambition to make the club great again, spending over £149 million on four proven players, Henrik Mkhytarian, Eric Baily, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and of course the man of the transfer window Paul Pogba. Louis Van Gaal may not have been a fan favourite by the time he departed, but what he did do was leaving Mourinho with a team that will already be accustomed to Mourinho’s tactics, as well as an exciting option of Premier League proven youth. By adding proven quality players to the spine of the team, Mourinho has never had it so good and should not have any excuses for taking this team into the top four.

And what about the Champions League Place Trophy, who will be the three to follow?

Finishing second, third or fourth has been a trophy in its own right for the last ten years, but with the new TV deals coming into effect this season, where you finish in the League can make a huge difference to the coffers. Last season, Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspurs occupied the 3 Champions League positions along with champions Leicester.

  Manchester City was the most active of the three in this transfer window, With Pep Guardiola, John Stones, Nolito, Gundagon, Sane and Gabrel Jesus all joining the Citizens new project. As it stands, Manchester City spent more money on players than any other team in the Premier League ( £151.75 million) and will be favourites to challenge for the title with Pep Guardiola’s methods already bearing fruit during pre-season. Pep, like Mourinho, brings an aura that evokes an instant response from his players, winning the league title in his first season for Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Pep takes over a squad full of experience and world class young talent, thirsty for the education the Spanish coach will give them. It would be a huge surprise if City were to finish lower than second with the squad and manager they possess and I predict they will be in the title race right down to the last game.

  Arsenal fans may not believe it now but come to the end of the season, their extraordinary record of finishing in the top four every season under Arsene Wenger will continue. With all the talk heavily focused on Arsenals failure to bring in a world class striker, many forget that Arsenal defence was one of the best in the League last season conceding just 36 goals in 38 games. Far from rest on his laurels, Wenger has built on his defensive foundation by purchasing two top quality defensive players in Granit Xhaka and Mustafa, for only £55 million. Arsenal will be a hard team to beat, but the difference between the Gunners finishing in the top four and challenging for the title is a striker who can provide his team with 20-25 goals.

The fourth spot will be fought by a host of teams who have developed into genuine contenders for Champions League football. Leicester, Tottenham, Southampton, West Ham, Liverpool and Chelsea all have the potential to challenge for Champions League football, in what could be the tightest race in Premier League history. But my pick for the coveted fourth place finish goes to Liverpool.

Liverpool’s pre-season has been almost perfect, With their biggest signing Jurgen Klopp now settled in his role as Liverpool manager. The club wasted little time in purchasing the pieces to Klopp’s puzzle, managing to sign almost all their key players before a ball was kicked for pre-season. What’s more, the majority of the squad got the summer off. Their respected country did not need Firminio, Moreno, Lovren, Wijnaldum, Grujic, Matip, Mane and Karius, and Coutinho, Lallana, Sturridge, Henderson and Clyne finished international duty early, which meant key players came back quicker than some of their rivals. Liverpool avoided the pull of using pre-season for marketing purposes. Instead, the players were able to treat the tour of America as a tourist and focus their energy on training. Liverpool faced top quality opposition throughout the trip, capping this off with a blitzing performance against Barcelona.

A fresh Liverpool will be a dangerous Liverpool and with no European football to distract them the Reds will be fresh and ready for every game. With the addition of height, Pace, skill and goals, joining a team that reached two cup finals last season, Liverpool will be a dangerous opposition for any team this season.

And what about the Champions?

The loss of Kante to Chelsea is a huge blow to Leicester chances of repeating last season’s unprecedented title win. Kante protected the back four in a similar way to how Matic defended Terry and Cahill when Chelsea won the league, and we all know what happened when Matic was anonymous last season. Although Morgan and Huth are excellent defenders, they were shielded fantastically well from the opposition’s midfield by Kante and had more time to focus on dealing with their defensive shape than putting up with opposition running directly at them on a regular basis. Now Kante’s gone, I anticipate the two ageing centre halfs to be exposed much more this season, putting their impressive goals against figures(which stood at 36 last season; the same as Arsenal) to be in jeopardy. Another issue for Leicester is European football.

Many of the Leicester squad will be learning how to balance European, League and domestic cup football for the first time. Ranieri will not get the luxury of playing the same eleven week in week out and will need to deal with new challenges, notably fatigue and injuries; problems he didn’t face too often last season. But Leicester have been active in the transfer window, and football fans should keep a particularly close eye on highly rated attacking midfielder Bartosz Kapustka. The 19-year-old Polish international is highly rated amongst the ITK crowd of Twitter, and with five goals and ten assists for Cracovia Krakow last season, he could become yet another unhidden gem discovered by Leicester City. Alongside Kaputska, Leicester have purchased two new centre-backs, a new striker (Musa, if you didn’t, know already) a keeper and a replacement for Kante, Nempalys Mendy, but they are still a few quality signings short of being able to repeat last season’s heroics.

If Leicester can keep Riyad Mahrez, having already secured Jamie Vardy for another season, then they have a chance of fighting for glory. If they lose Mahrez however, then bigger issues may be in store for the foxes.

I expect the Champions to be fighting for the top four, and have an impressive debut in the Champions League, but my top four predictions this season is Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

NB- Don’t worryy Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham and Southampton fans, I do think you will be challengers and I will be looking at your chances over the next few weeks.

The following article was born out of a conversation with a good friend Joey Tomlinson on who’s had a better season, Hector Bellerin or Nathaniel Clyne? Both right backs have been exceptional for their clubs this season with Bellerin being named in the Premier League TOTY and Clyne hailed as a key player in Liverpool’s run into the Europa League Final.

WeLikeToTalk looks into the numbers behind the performances, giving points to the player with the highest attributes based on attacking, defensive and passing contributions and marking them down for phases of play that have had an adverse effect on their team.

We will let the numbers do the talking to give the winning side all the ammunition they need for bragging rights.

But first, let’s look at the players in question.

The Case For Hector

A spate of injury problems for Mathieu Debuchy in last season’s campaign provided the perfect opportunity for 19-year-old Hector Bellerin to capture the first team right back spot at one of the biggest clubs in England. Bellerin not only solidified his place as Arsenal’s number 1 right back, but he also took the 15/16 season by storm.

Perhaps a rarity in the twitter sphere, Bellerin’s inclusion in the Premier Leagues team of the year drew little debate. The Spanish under 21 international has demonstrated more to his game than just his pace by bringing a defensive steal to a team that conceded the second fewest goals in the league with 36.

Top quality performances against the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Bayern Munich while maintaining consistency in his form throughout the season has seen Bellerin earn his first cap for the Spanish senior side before Euro 2016 in a 3-1 win against Bosnia.

With Dani Carvajal now a serious doubt for the Euros, Bellerin has an opportunity to capitalise from another collogues injury and make the right back position for La Roja his own.

The Case for Nathaniel

Nathaniel Clyne emerged as one of the most sort after right backs at the end of the 2014/15 season after announcing that he wanted a fresh challenge away from St Marys. With Manchester United in pole position for his signature, the English international opted for Liverpool in a £12.5 million deal which caused many commentators to suggest the transfer was one of the bargains of the summer. Undeterred by the pressure of being Liverpool’s number one right back, Clyne proved to be worth every penny by producing a string of solid defensive displays. Perhaps one of the biggest honours you could give to Clyne’s debut season is that he has kept out local lad, and fan favourite Jon Flanagan, without a whisper of discontent.

Clyne’s style is very similar to Bellerin. He’s a quick, reliable defender possessing all the qualities necessary to play in a high pressing team. In a side that values holding the ball over playing it long, Clyne is comfortable in possession and useful going forward. Although Klopp historically plays with wingers, a lack of wide offensive players has meant that Clyne’s influence up and down the right-hand side of the pitch has been crucial in providing Liverpool with width this season.

Bellerin may lack numbers in the tackling department, but his technical defending has not gone unnoticed, winning more interceptions, blocks and clearances than Clyne.

Looking at their attacking attributes Bellerin has not only completed more dribbles than Clyne, but he was the top dribbler from right back in the League last season.Clyne may have provided more key passes, but Hector Bellerin along with Ander Capa, Danilo, Charlie Daniels, Roberto Rosales and Christophe Jallet, provided the most amount of assist of any right back in Europes top five Leagues with five. Bellerin’s five assists for Arsenal this season means only Giroud and Ozil have provided more than the Spaniard.

Put it another way; Bellerin Had more League assists than Sanchez last season.

Looking at the negatives, Clyne comes out on top for losing possession, giving away fouls and unsuccessful passes. But even with the points lost, Bellerin would have still come out on top.

The emergence of young, fearless strikers cutting their teeth at some of the biggest clubs in England has been a welcome sight for the Premier League this season. Leading the front line can be a daunting task in any industry, but doing so in the boiling cauldron of England’s top division, where the eyes of the world fixate on your every move, the pressure can be too intense even for the most experienced players in the profession. Fortunately for their clubs, these young lions have proven that age is nothing but a number, and if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.

WL2T takes a look at some of the emergence of some of the hottest talents in world football and what they have contributed to their teams this season.

Anthony Martial

If you don’t know already, when Martial joined Manchester United for a fee which will rise to £57.6 million the English press gasped at the size of the fee and ridiculed Manchester United for wasting money on a nobody. Fast forward to April 2016 and there isn’t a football  fan man or woman around that would deny the talent he possesses.

Arriving at just 19 years of age, Martial’s record of 9 goals and 1 assist for Monaco was a decent return for an 18-year-old but not a return that many would argue merited a £57.6 million price tag. To put it in to context, once he triggers all his clauses, he will be the most expensive player in Premier League history.

Manchester United, however, saw this as an investment in a talent they believed will become one of the best strikers in world football in the coming years. They saw it as a small price to pay for someone who will return the investment ten folds.

And they may just be right.

Anthony Martial’s Season In Numbers r2015-16

Martial has taken 68 shots, with 44 hitting the target or blocked and 14 goals

The Frenchman boasts a 75% pass accuracy, providing 47 key passes and 11 assists

He has attempted an astonishing 240 dribbles, succeeding 8.7 times per 90 minutes

Defensively Martial attempted 41 tackles 9 interceptions and made 31 blocks for his team.

    The injury crisis which crippled Manchester United all season provided the perfect opportunity for a new hero to step up and take the helm as king. In 25 minutes of his debut, Martial did just that announcing himself on the Premier League stage by nailing the coffin of bitter rivals Liverpool with an incredible third goal showing a cool head and great footwork to make the space for a fabulous finish.

Far from being a one-hit wonder, Anthony Martial’s confidence with the ball at his feet has terrorised defences all season with fans holding there breath and wondering just what will he do next? The range of skills demonstrated by Martial has been a joy to watch, and his bravery to take on his man is evident in that you attempted 240 take on.

With Wayne Rooney out of form and injured and Martial being the only recognised striker Louis Van Gaal gave Martial the chance to to be the main man, But far from crumble under pressure, Martial has thrived. His impressive return of 14 goals in his debut season have been far from tap-ins.

It’s incredible to think that at just 19, he has been able to win the hearts and minds of the Old Trafford faithful who demand their players to be world class. To lead the line at a club like United requires you to be a big game player like his predecessors. In Martial, Manchester United have their man. The 14 goals scored this campaign have been against 11 different opposition. When United have needed the goal, Martial has stepped up, none more so than in Manchester Unites win over Everton. His victims include;

Liverpool (2 goals in 2 games) Everton( 2 goals in 2 games) Southampton (2 goals) Ipswich CSKA Moscow Wolfsburg Norwich Swansea Stoke Sunderland West Ham

The same can also be said about his assists record. An extraordinary return of 11 assists by Martial has come against ten different opponents. This fusion of being a goal scorer and goal provider epitomises the qualities needed in a modern day striker, which Martial displays in abundance by being quick, strong, technically gifted and spaciously aware. He also gets involved with his defensive duties  and has proven to be a versatile cog in the wheel, playing through the middle and out wide.

In Anthony Martial, Manchester United have their very own talisman from Les Ulis, the same city which brought the Premier League Thierry Henry. Many pundits draw comparisons between the two French strikers, but Martial true inspiration lies in two fleet footed Brazilian legends named by the name of Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, and if that is someone he wants to emulate, Manchester United fans are in for a treat.
