Rolling submissions for ANIMAL are now live. Check out our submission guidelines on our website, or read more below.
We accept all genres of writing and all mediums of visual art created by individuals who identify with or as an animal in any capacity. Submissions need not be explicitly concerned with furry&alterhuman content alone, though such works are encouraged.
ANIMAL accepts:
Poetry: Up to five pages in a 12-point font, single spaced. If submitting multiple poems, the start of each poem should appear on a new page. Submit one file per submission with all poems in the same document.
Fiction: Short stories and flash fiction, with a maximum of 5,000 words. One story per submission.
Nonfiction: Creative nonfiction and essays, personal or academic. Maximum of 5,000 words, one piece per submission. We ask that academic essays be accompanied by a bibliography.
Visual art: Photography, collage, painting, digital illustration, and any medium/s that are able to be scanned or photographed to be submitted as a JPEG or similar format, such as a PNG or TIF file. Up to five pieces may be included in one submission.
Comics: Comics may be in black and white or colour and should be submitted as PDFs. Due to the formâs complexity, we accept a broad range of image-text approaches at a maximum of three pages per submission.
Articles, reviews, recommendations, and adjacent material: ANIMAL will publish short features of up to 1,000 words on a rolling basis, independent of any themed issue. Such features might be media reviews, a curated reading list, or a recipe. Email [email protected] with âfeatureâ in the subject line to ensure we see your piece.
We do not accept AI-generated or AI-assisted works.
We ask that all poetry and prose submissions be formatted single spaced with a 12-point font. Authors intentionally using creative fonts and formats are encouraged to make a note of it in their submission. All submissions should be emailed to [email protected] as an attached file. Please indicate the category of your submission in the subject line. A cover letter is not required, but please provide a short third-person bio to accompany your work, including a name to attribute the piece to. We post on our Instagram and Tumblr when a new piece has been published; if you would like us to tag you in the description, please let us know.
ANIMAL does not accept work that has been previously curated, in print or online. Works may be previously self-published on social media, but may not have been published in books, magazines, or similar collections open to the public. If your piece is accepted, we ask that ANIMAL have first serial rights and non-exclusive digital rights. This means that we are granted the rights to be the first publication to publish your piece and that we may display your piece on our website indefinitely. Copyright will remain with you.
After we publish, you are free to submit your work to other publications, though we ask that ANIMAL be credited in subsequent reprints.
In the interest of accessibility, ANIMAL is free to submit to and read. Although we would love to compensate our contributors for their work, our small crew works fully on a volunteer basis and cannot currently pay for submissions. This is a passion project for us, and our hope is that as interest in the magazine grows we will be able to adopt a model that would allow us to compensate our artists and writers while still hosting free submissions.
Feel free to send us an ask or email us with any questions regarding submissions. We aim for a submission response time of two weeks, but we are a small crew. Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] if we havenât gotten back to you after a month.

hi, asking, because I can't find many resources on this:
What's with starseed community? I've heard that it is problematic and I also saw that some state it is a Nazi thing.
Do you have any info (and resources) on what is going on with this community and why is this problematic?
Boy, I admit I don't have much in the way of resources onhand for that specifically; it's a bit out of my scope. I probably can't tell you anything Google can't. It sums up to, starseeds are a New Age concept proposing that certain people are extraterrestrial souls sent to Earth to guide humanity to some kind of ascension. It purports that certain people are born inherently "higher" while others are more "primitive" spiritually speaking, which is already a pretty yikes concept even before you get into the history of this movement and ones like it being deeply steeped in racism and eugenics. Suspiciously, whenever you see physical descriptions of these "higher races," the ones who aren't just bog-standard "greys" always seem to be pale-skinned and often blonde, at least from what I've seen (Pleiadians, one of the most well-known and "highest" races, are literally described as "Nordic aliens" or "indistinguishable from Nordic people").
It's also heavily linked to the idea of aliens "seeding" earth in the past, which is itself a concept steeped in racism and the ideas that a) different peoples are literally different species (some of which are of course "higher" than others) and b) historical people of color of course couldn't actually accomplish anything impressive or significant, it must have been aliens. It's also linked to the idea that Someday Soon⢠there will be a great purge, I mean ascension, where the enlightened and spiritual starseeds will rise to a New Earth and everyone else will be left behind (which doesn't sound like the Rapture or like every dream of the Grand Revolution which conveniently doesn't care how many people it leaves behind or kills in the process of creating its new dream).
So. yeah. There's more to it, but that's about all I know off the top of my head and with minimal research (all of which comes up in the first few links of google results for various starseed-related searches). I don't really have any spectacular resources that have all this information in one place, but it's not hard to turn up with a little searching.
Tl;dr, the big difference between starseeds and otherkin and the reason one is kind of problematic and the other isn't is that otherkin aren't generally claiming to be "Nordic aliens" sent to "guide humanity to ascension".
Both the Stareseed and Indigo/Crystal/Rainbow/whatever Child movements were also ways for a particular type of middle class suburban parent to lable their very clearly autistic child. It was like the Changeling myth, almost, but in a more "benevolent" new age way.
No of *course* my child isn't autistic, they are a special new form of humanity meant to lead us to a higher state of being ect ect ect
And the two communities, while perhaps starting separate (I don't actually know) did at least definitely become intertwined.
also a lot of overlap with âearth angelsâ (distinct from angelkin).
and yeah itâs very frequently both white supremecist and ableist. Physical âsignsâ of bei g a starseed/indigo child/earth angel are often being blonde, having blue eyes, being pale, being very empathetic, being very passive, facing persistent cruelty, and being able to easily âread rooms/intentionsâ. You might notice that these might also raise red flags for a kid being abused.
often comes with a lore background of being an alien or future being or spirit inhabiting a human body for the purpose of protecting/saving/educating/guiding humanity. Theyâre seen as paragons of kindness, gentility, and virtue. This often leads adults around them who believe this shit to outsource morality and decision making, use kids to vent to, and punish them for failing at these things.
adults who believe theyre one of these archetypes often have a savior/superiority complex around it and see themselves as above those around them.
i fucking hate these concepts/communities with a passion. I dont think theres any healthy way to engage with them.
Most of this is good which is why I chose to reblog this far down the chain rather than directly from Rani, but I wanted to pick on one thing a little bit:
otherkin aren't generally claiming to be "Nordic aliens" sent to "guide humanity to ascension".
Not the first part, but the second part -- here to spiritually guide humanity in some way, reunite this world and the otherworld, or variations on that theme -- has definitely been put forth both by individuals about themselves and as a theory about otherkin as a whole.
It has, but itâs not the foundation of the community in the same way it is for starseeds. Thatâs something thatâs inherent to the definition of a starseed - not so for otherkinity. Individuals hold that belief, but itâs not an inherent part of otherkinity or even a significant majority of the community that believes that (especially these days; I know it was once more widespread than it is now). Hence the âgenerallyâ in the sentence. :P
Going off on a bit of a tangent, but I definitely remember those beliefs being pretty widespread back when I first joined the otherkin community (1999-2000).
Certainly less so these days, yeah. But encountering that attitude early on definitely contributed to me getting caught up in the starseed and earth angel communities for a brief while. (Though even my clueless teenage ass could tell they were racist as fuck, so thankfully it didn't last.)

I don't love that every time a famous artist turns out to be a fucking disgusting piece of trash loser evil shitstain that everyone always scrambles to say WELL THEIR ART WAS ALWAYS MID AND BAD ANYWAY. like dude just reckon with the fact you can't judge someone's moral fiber based on the art they make or the clothes they wear or the way they speak or fucking anything anything at all
I think one of the worst things I ever had to come to terms with when I was younger is that monsters were still people too, and thats why some were capable of loving them when I was not; itâs why they made art, its why they could be good, and its why they could change
When they say figuring out if you're trans or not is more about chasing joy than hyper-analyzing your misery they aren't kidding. When I think "do I hate my boobs? am I really a trans man or am I bigender like I thought?" I get a lot of weird and complicated feelings my brain is not ready to break down, but when I think "hypothetically, what would my life be like without boobs" I can't stop smiling thinking about wearing all my favorite shirts and walking around shirtless and swim shirtless and never having to buy another bra or feel like my boobs are holding me back from doing things I want to do and it's like oh.
this with me but Iâve decided it would be way funnier & more joyous for me personally to wear things that push my boobs up while also having a kickass beard cause thatâs so fun n whimsical
for awhile I was like âno ill cut them off cause this is so stressfulâ but then I comprehended the stress I was applying to myself was stress from heteronormative society & after I spent some time experimenting n learning about myself I found a personally way better path for my current life
turns out my gender was a lot more complicated than âjust a tboyâ (< thatâs how I used to frame it to myself)
turns out Iâm convoluted and funny abt my gender & its great

Hello I hope everything is going well for you! if it is ok may I ask for a medieval styled unicorn moodboard in the sun ray template and with themes deep forests and abandoned churches? I am a nature guardian if that helps at all
I started reading again and so far it's going very well. I know for a lot of people who deal with psychotic disorders reading is extremely difficult, but it can be done. It just takes some time and practice. I hope everyone who wants to can get back to reading again.
