Let’s just start a series of crash courses in witchcraft, since sometimes we need to learn things the quick and dirty way. Today, let’s talk about wards.

What are wards? Wards are protective energy barriers. They keep things out. You can place them around your home, certain rooms, even on certain objects. With practice and clear intentions, you can focus the wards to block out everything or only certain things. We’ll get to that in a bit.

Why should I ward my space and my things? Wards can keep out all sorts of things you don’t want in your home. They can block out negative entities, wayward spirits, mischievous entities, demons, and (if you’re really good at what you’re doing) even gods. Some people ward their divination tools so they know there are no spirits tampering with the results.

So what do I need to do first? Cleanse. This is very important. Wards are kind of like walls, or perhaps more accurately, bubbles. If you don’t clean the space first, you might trap things inside your ward bubble. You do not want that. There are lots of methods of cleansing, from burning sage to spritzing oil-infused water. Find a method you’re comfortable with and cleanse everything you’re going to be warding.

I’ve cleansed my home/item. Now what? Now we ward. I’m going to give you a couple methods. Let’s start with my favorite, incense warding.

Incense warding can also be done with spritzes of water/essential oil blends or herb-infused water if you can’t have smoke in your space. Whichever you’re using, you want to have a blend of protective herbs. Bay leaves, cinnamon, ginger, mustard seed, and salt are some great options that you can find in the grocery store, no fancy witch shop necessary. If you’re using incense, make sure you’re using natural incense and not super cheap stuff that’s artificially scented. The magic is in the herbs, and you won’t get that from fake scents.

How to Incense/Spritz Ward an Item

Smoke or spray item.

Visualize the smoke or spray clinging to the item and wrapping around it like a tight blanket, protecting it from anything that would cause harm (or interference, etc.).

How to Incense/Spritz Ward Your Space

Pick a place to start. I always start at my altar, but it’s up to you. If you’re doing multiple floors, start either at the top or bottom floor.

Moving continuously to your right, smoke or spray along the walls and door frames. As you go, imagine a barrier being formed around the walls, ceiling, and floor, pushing outwards to fill the room. Visualize the smoke or spray forming the barrier to keep out anything that will do you harm. [If you have a hard time with visualization, you can simply focus on the intent of the smoke or spray keeping things out.]

Keep moving right, following the layout of your home, making sure you get all the closet spaces. You basically want to outline the entire area you’re protecting, whether it’s you’re room or your whole house.

For multiple floors, repeat on each level.

For big layouts where there are rooms in the middle, go around those rooms as well.

I like to reinforce the wards over outside doors, windows, and mirrors. These are all passages of sorts, and when I reach them, I use the incense to draw a pentagram in the air over them. This is entirely up to you.

You’re done when you’ve reached the point where you began.

So why do we go to the right? Is that important? Kind of. Going to the right is like going clockwise. It’s about making things and progression, where going to the left or counter-clockwise is about deconstruction or reversal. [I read this idea in a witchy book a long time ago and will try to find a source when I can. If you honestly don’t feel it makes a difference, do whatever you’re comfortable with.]

Can I place wards that keep out certain things but not others? Sure. When you’re going around your space/warding your item, your intent is what’s important. I like to ward out entities that mean harm - it’s nice and general and doesn’t keep the fae out. Some people might want certain spirits and not others. Have your intentions clear in your mind as you place your wards.

That’s neat and all, but what are some other ways to ward? Let’s list a few.

Symbol/Sigil Wards

Choose (or make) a symbol or sigil that has protective properties. I’ve done this with Pluto’s astrological symbol because I worship him and it’s my way of being like, “Hey, Pluto. Please protect me, kthanxbai.” Pentagrams are nice and basic witchy/pagan symbols if you like them.

Draw the symbol over doors and windows. You do not literally have to draw it. It can be in water, incense smoke, or just your finger against the surface if you want.

As you’re drawing, make sure you have your intentions in mind - that nothing harmful can pass through this door, that the windows remain closed against entities, etc.

Energy Bubbles (if you have control over your energy)

Pick an item - any item.

Get your warding intentions in mind.

Channel lots of energy into the item. Visualize it emanating from the item in a bubble to fill your space.

If you’ve got mad skillz, you can form the bubble to the walls and be super exact with where its barriers are.

Vocal Wards

If you like spoken (or thought) spells, come up with a small chant to protect your space.

You can repeat this chant as you focus on your item being protected or as you walk around your home, protecting every room.

This is really great to incorporate into basically any other form of warding and gives your magic an extra bit of oomph.

I’ve heard wards can “fade” over time. True or false? Wards are just energy. Like all energies, they can disperse and weaken over time, or if something particularly nasty puts effort into destroying them. Redo your wards every so often (I do mine every few months, but it’s up to you), and especially before spiritual interactions. I also like to do mine after I’ve had lots of company, to kind of clear out family’s lingering energies and reinforce what I don’t want in my house.

A little witchy calendar to look forward to next year, since this one was a little bit.. cursed.

Enchant your morning cup of tea/coffee

Match the colours of your makeup to your intentions for the day

Visualise the water washing away all the negativity when you shower

Enchant your nail polish (bonus: match the colour to the intention, black for protection, red for love, green for prosperity, etc)

Say your affirmations (for clear skin, fading scars, reducing dullness, etc) when doing your skincare

Charge your perfume with the energy you wish to attract

When tying your shoes, visualise them symbolically protecting you from tripping and “falling” into places and situations that disturb your peace

Use music to your advantage, listen to songs that match your intentions, or alternatively, use music as a tool for divination

Some witches veil to keep their energy from draining and to protect them from others’ emotions, but a beanie works too

If you wear glasses, use them as a tool so that they help you “see clearly”

Put your moisturiser on in the shape of a sigil before massaging it in

Child’s pose is always there for you, use it when you need it (alleviates stress and anxiety, helps clear the mind, releases tension in the back, helps to steady breathing, is overall great for grounding, etc)

Visualise the A+ (on your report card/on the paper after it’s been graded/etc) right before beginning to solve your test/exam, it also helps if you can draw a sigil somewhere on the paper, or trace it on the paper with your finger

When shaving, visualise any energy buildup being shaved off as well

If you play the guitar, draw a sigil on your plectrum/pick for an added boost (this works with other instruments too)

Do not litter out of respect for nature and its spirits

Feel free to add more things onto the list

✨ Don’t feel bad if your grimoire is in a cheap notebook.

✨ Don’t feel bad if you rip out or redo a page.

✨ Don’t feel bad if your handwriting isn’t perfect.

✨ Don’t feel bad if you make mistakes, everyone does.

✨ Don’t feel bad if you spell something wrong. Cross it out or use white out.

✨ Don’t feel bad if you want to transfer your grimoire to a new book. This is how you learn what you prefer.

✨ Don’t feel bad if you rip a page.

✨ Don’t feel bad if you forget something.

✨ Don’t feel bad if you smear ink/paint/pencil.

✨ Don’t feel bad if you spill something on your book.

This glamour is designed to help you appear more persuasive. This can be helpful when applying for a job, public speaking, or convincing friends/family/lovers. BE AWARE - this type of glamour is inherently manipulative and should only be used to help you convince others and make people more inclined to listen to what you have to say.

MATERIALS

10g Shea Butter

10g Beeswax

10g Coconut Oil

1 Tsp Honey (Local if you can)

5 drops Sweet Orange Oil

On a double boiler (medium/low heat) melt the Shea Butter, Beeswax and Coconut Oil. Turn of heat and stir clockwise as you add the Honey and Sweet Orange Oil. Sing as you stir:

Smooth as butter,

Sweet as honey,

Enchant my words,

To be bright and sunny.

With honeyed lips,

And charming smiles,

Those who hear me

Are not hostile.

To my words,

They shall listen,

And be convinced

By my proposition.

Let it cool in a container of your choice (I like a small metal tin). Once cool, apply to your lips and repeat the above chant. The heat of your lips will activate it.

Not every witch has access to metaphysical shops that sell specialty herbs, or herbs you can’t find in your local grocery store, so here is a list of common herbs and spices that you can easily access, or that you may already have! 

Aside from obtaining these herbs and spices individually, look for bottles of poultry or beef seasoning, and other seasoning blends (Cajun, Italian, etc.) - they usually contain a variety of these herbs in one convenient container. 

Allspice - prosperity, luck, healing, energy

Anise Seed - protection, happiness, enhanced psychic ability, cleansing, warding off nightmares and disturbing dreams

Basil -  love, banishing, wealth, success, sympathy, protection; dispelling confusion, fears, and weakness

Bay Leaf - wishes, protection, good fortune, success, purification, strength, healing, inducing prophetic dreams, enhanced psychic ability

Black Pepper - protection, banishing, cursing

Chamomile - peace, relaxation, restful sleep, love, healing, luck, prosperity, removing curses or negating spells

Chili Powder - love, fidelity, cursing, removing curses or negating spells

Cinnamon - success, healing, protection, power, love, luck, strength, prosperity

Cloves - protection, love, prosperity, banishing, friendship, stopping gossip

Cumin - love, fidelity, protection, banishing, preventing theft

Dill - prosperity, protection, luck, lust

Fennel - strength, vitality, sexual virility; prevents curses and wards off negative energy

Garlic Powder & Garlic Salt - healing, protection, banishing, cleansing, purification

Ginger - sensuality, sexuality, personal confidence, prosperity, success, health, protection, new experiences and adventures

Mace - concentration, focus, self-discipline, studying

Marjoram - cleansing, purification, dispelling negative energy, protection, love, wealth, revealing the truth through dreams, overcoming sadness and grief

Mustard Seed - courage, endurance, preventing physical injury, luck, success

Nutmeg - prosperity, luck, protection, intellect, removing curses

Onion Powder & Onion Salt - prosperity, stability, endurance, protection, breaking bad habits, cleansing

What is a devotional journal?

Its exactly how it sounds! Its a journal that’s devoted specifically to a deity  

What do I put in a devotional journal?

Basically anything you want! But let me give you some ideas:

Journal entries to your deity where you tell them various things such as how your day went, how you are feeling, whats bothering you, how much you look up to them, something you learned about them, etc

Hymns

Poems or quotes that remind you of them

Your own poems you wrote for them

Drawings you want to dedicate to them

Collages (Im a fan of clipping things from magazines as you can see!)

Flowers

Information about your deity and your thoughts on it

Lists of things that remind you of your deity (songs, movies, characters, books etc)

What can I use as a devotional journal?

ANYTHING! Basically whatever works for you. I got mine at Ikea and I just felt like it was perfect. 

Why keep a devotional journal?

You by no means are required to keep one. Its completely optional, but I think it can be beneficial. Just like any journal its a great way to be able to look back at where you came from and how you progressed. It can also serve as kind of like a Witch’s book of shadows where you have a lot of things together in one place for reference. All the poems and hymns you like are in one place making offerings a lot easier. Writing in the journal itself can be a devotional act! And lastly, I just think its really cool to have my personal unique relationship with Aphrodite tangible. Its literally in my hands and anyone can flip through it and get a sense of how I feel about her and what she means to me. That just makes my heart feel full!

Should I share my devotional journal or keep it private?

That’s 100% up to you. Theres nothing wrong with either honestly. You can even do what I did and only share some pages. Whatever makes you comfortable!

add your ingredients in whatever order speaks to you. the correspondences should align with the process you will use to heal.

(optional) put the lid back on the jar and seal with a candle.

Keep a sigil on a sticky note in your pencil case (for good grades, concentration, protection, etc. My school is currently grieving so personally I keep one meant to radiate healing.)

Keep a crystal that corresponds to your throat chakra (lapis lazuli, turquoise, aquamarine, celestite, etc) to help you speak up in class and express your thoughts (especially in speeches, presentations, and debates), aid in effective communication with friends, peers, and teachers, boost your confidence, and prevent miscommunication to avoid accidentally starting/spreading rumours

I’ll say this again: enchant your nail polish. Clear nail polish for protection has been my best friend in schools with a dress code where I need to practice in secret. Wearing enchanted nail polish could help if you struggle with getting your thoughts from your head to your hands and onto the paper (take advantage of the colours, too!)

If a friend or peer is going through a period in their life where they need additional emotional support, charge a crystal with healing energy and let them borrow it everyday, recharge as needed (bonus: you can tell them it’s your good luck stone/crystal, nobody really questions it if you’re in the broom closet)

Charge your bottle of water, because you’re super cool and you deserve to be hydrated and also because school/uni is draining and you’ll need to recharge

Do not hesitate to go to the bathroom and ground yourself in a stall (usually less people and conflicting energies than a classroom/cafeteria, and gives you privacy to do some breathing exercises for a few minutes), although school bathrooms aren’t always very calming...

Many of us dread(ed) PE, but I find that it’s a great opportunity to let out any excess energy that’s accumulated throughout the day, especially if you’re an empath

Make a sigil you can draw on your notebooks and test papers for some extra support

With the pandemic and all, I and many other students spray our seats and tables with alcohol/disinfectant/wipe them down before taking a seat; charge your spray/wipes, and visualise them cleansing your seat of any negative energy

My dearest students, keep Athena happy. Just trust me on this one.

Cleanse your bag when you get home so you don’t carry any unwanted energy from your day with you at home, and to stop the energy from building up in your bag, supplies, and books

Enchant the pen you use for tests/exams/graded assignments

If you’re a student, rosemary should probably be your go-to herb. Aside from the obvious protective and purifying qualities, rosemary is great for dispelling jealousy, enhancing memory, encouraging school success, and making lasting impressions. Try to incorporate rosemary into your breakfast before school.

So you have seen our lovely bath magic spells but you cannot take a bath. Maybe you don’t have a bath in your current residence, maybe you are physically unable to use bathtubs, maybe you’re just super stretched for time but want to get in some extra magical umph. Recreational Witchcraft is here for you. 

Shower disks are traditionally used in the aromatherapy world to relieve congestion and other flu-symptoms while showering via the use of essential oils, but we will be bumping up their magical potential.

Basic recipe:

1 cup baking soda 

1 tablespoon corn starch

1/3 cup of water

Muffin tins and muffin liners

Combine baking soda and corn starch (making sure there are no clumps), then slowly add in the water. Fill lined muffin tins about third of the way, then leave out for 24 hours to dry completely. Carefully take them out of the liners, add your essential oils, and place your disk somewhere in your shower that will allow them to dissolve slowly while you do your business. Bam. You’re done. 

Now onto the magic. All dry ingredients (herbs, spices, etc) should be added in with the baking soda and corn starch before the water is added. All essential oils should be added right before they’re used (so when they’re completely dry).

Cleansing and Purifying:

Salt is a go to ingredient that witches seem to use abundantly.

Salt and it’s historical uses

In Germany, Normandy, and Scotland salt was sprinkled around a butter churn to keep witches from souring the butter or hurting the cow whose milk was used to make the butter.

An Irish folk remedy called upon the use of salt as well as the reciting of the lords prayer to get cure ‘faerie-struck’ children. Similar to the way the Bavarian and Ukrainian people used to figure out if a child had been bewitched.

Egyptian Caravans that were preparing to cross the desert would perform a ritual that involved burning salt on hot coals in order to prevent evil spirits nothing the travelers as well as to ensure a safe passage.

Provided protection from witches, witchcraft, demons, and the evil eye.

Salt and it’s uses in Witchcraft

Salt in general is used in ritual purification, magickal protections, and blessings.

Some witches place salt in the four corners of the room before casting.

Used in purification spells.

Used to symbolize earth, one of the elements, on your altar or when you are casting. Sea salt may be used as the element water due to the fact that it came from the sea.  

Used in the Witches Bottle

Can be used as an offering to the Gods.

Some people associate it with wealth, prosperity, and good luck.

Is an ingredient used often and abundantly in Kitchen Magick.

Creates a magickal, protective barrier.

Cleanses

Throw salt to ward off malevolent spirits and energies.

Repels many types of evil.

Absorbs psychic energies.

Place in your bath to cleanse and rid negativity. (Epsom Salt)

Salt and it’s superstitions

If someone spills the salt at dinner, it means a violent family quarrel is on the way.

It’s considered bad luck to lend salt to someone, because that can lead to a feud between the borrower and the lender. A good way to avoid this problem is if you get a cup of salt from someone, pay it back with sugar or molasses instead. Interestingly, in parts of northern England and Scotland it is also seen as bad luck to lend salt, mostly because the person borrowing it can use it as a magical link to curse you.

Salt can also be used to detect the presence of witches: in the Ozarks, it is believed that witches don’t eat much salt, so if someone complains about food being too salty, she might be regarded with suspicion. There is also a tale that bewitched cattle will not touch salt.

If you spill salt you must through it over your shoulder to bring you good luck and to keep evil at bay.

Types of salt and there properties

Himalayan Salt: Is commonly used for protection, especially around the home and against malevolent spirits. Also used to purify and to get rid of any negative energies. Used in spells to release from attachment. It has gentle, but strong grounding and centering energies. Brings prosperity and abundance into a home. Promotes love, happiness, and friendship.

Black Salt: Is used mainly for protection. Absorbs and contains any negativity. Can be used for hexing too. It drives away evil and protects your home and belongings. Use it to create boundaries with your enemies. Wardings, undoings, uncrossings, binding work, journeying to the afterlife, honoring the crone, and many other workings use black salt. Black salt can also be used to return curses and negative energies back to it’s caster. Working with the dark moon.

Sea Salt: Sacred to water deities and used often in Sea Witchcraft.  Make herbal salt scrubs. Used to consecrate. Commonly used to make magick circles. Used for protection as well. Can be used in curses. It is associated with purity, protection, purification, and blessings.
