Anime recs if you like Miraculous Ladybug
Things that happened once I put on the spoiler blocking and have no idea what people are talking about any longer: I remember that I don’t even watch western TV animation, what the heck.
This isn’t a list of what I’d consider the best anime out there, but a handful of good shows that have some of the things that make me love MLB. If anyone has more titles, do share!
With that said:
IF YOU’RE HERE FOR THE LIGHTHEARTED SUPERHERO ACTION BLOWING THE BUDGET ON FIGHT SCENES: TIGER AND BUNNY
Silly superhero wahey where the main draw is the chemistry between a couple of animal-named hero partners with a five-minute power limit. TECHNICALLY there are other heroes but they only get a Very Special Episode each. I really don’t know what more to say? It’s just fun. Also Yuri Lowenthal’s in the English dub.
FOR THE LOVE SQUARE TRASH: ROMEO X JULIET
Yes, yes I know, but the most this has got in common with the Shakespeare version is the names. Romeo Candore van di Montague IS the blue-haired Adrien Agreste and Juliet is a kickass masked vigilante fighting his dad, and this is as much the story about an uprising against a tyrant as it is a story about a couple of pining teenagers.
IF YOU’RE HERE TO WATCH MARINETTE BE A PERSONAL DISASTER WHILE BEATING THE PANTS OFF THE BAD GUY WEEKLY: ANGELIC LAYER
The manga is rubbish, but the anime is a gem of middle school friendship and unrequited crushes and the tale of a girl and her AWOL mother. And yes it’s a sports anime about barbie doll pit fights, but it’s got a secondary cast of friends and family that are instantly lovable, and it’s got a lot of dumb funny. And it’s about women kicking ass and taking names while the guys are almost all relegated to cheerleaders and they all drink their respect women juice.
IF YOU’RE REALLY INTO MONSTER OF THE DAY AND THE CLASSMATES AND THE “DUMB” PART OF DUMB CRUSHES: CARDCAPTOR SAKURA
Sakura is younger than the MBL crew, but the target audience is the same. It’s cute and it’s heartwarming and with some seventy episodes total, a lot of time for even the tertiary cast to get decently fleshed out. While all the shows on this list are good, CCS gets a special mention here for its sheer length and for being so well-written that you never get bored, even though the minority of the episodes do much to advance the plot.
FOR WHOEVER IS HERE FOR THE STORY ABOUT A MAN TURNED TO EVIL IN HIS DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO SAVE A LOST LOVE AND THE FOURTEEN YEAR OLD HEROES TRANSFORMING TO SAVE THE INNOCENT PEOPLE HE TURNS INTO MONSTERS IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET THE OBJECT THAT CAN GRANT ANY WISH FROM THE HEROES: SARAZANMAI
Go ahead. I dare you.
