Tenth post for @creatingblackcharacters Melanin Beam Challenge, and it is a double! Two different super hero shows; the Tennyson family from Ben10, and Starfire from Teen Titans!
For Ben10, this is now a show about a Black family who initially set out for a summer road trip (I'm imagining that for both Ben and Gwen, their parents noticed that the kids have been having a touch time at school; Ben gets picked on, and Gwen is kinda stressed out trying to always fit in and be a top student. spending time with Grandpa Max seemed like a good break from all that). Then sci-fi shenanigans happen! (also, this version of Grandpa Max definitely sounds like Danny Glover now)
Starfire is such an interesting character; she's an alien princess, she's a warrior, she's a foreigner in a new place, she's the one with the brightest smile, she's socially awkward, she's confident and courageous, she's a genius- and it all just combines together in away that (ironically) makes her seem down-to-earth! She's had a LOT of different designs over the years, and often we have seen some that are Black-coded, or very intentionally Black... but there was always those particular jerks who complained about it, insisting "she's a space alien, she can't be Black!" because they consider very specific kinds of white features to be the "default" (generic white designs can be anything, but other features? oh, heavens, no!)
For the entire Tennyson family, they all have dark-brown skin-tones (Gwen is sort of more "golden", Ben is a deep earthy brown, and Max is a softer copper). One of the big visual changes I made with Grandpa Max is giving him a beard and a shorter hair style; I wanted to show the texture without it looking "scruffy", he's still very much clean-cut with his appearance!
I gave Gwen much thicker hair, with wavy curls that are darker red and shine a bright orange (I like to imagine that when she's older, she cuts it even shorter, and just lets her natural texture grow). I changed her outfit slightly, just for the fun of it; she has a short-sleeved pale powder-blue shirt under a camisole (that is a little long, making it almost a mini-dress. not seen are her white denim shorts). Other background things I had in mind; she's a year older than Ben, and maybe an inch-and-a-half taller than him, which she never lets him forget... but they look a lot a like, which means people not in the know mistake them for siblings (when they're still in the annoy-each-other-phase, this bothers them. but the time they're in highschool, they don't mind). Despite the year difference, they actually share a birthday, so they've got that rivalry BUILT IN. After having so many adventures over the summer, they mellow out on antagonizing each other (thank goodness). Gwen in particular learns how to relax and not try so hard to hurry and grow-up
For Ben, I kept the "direction" of his lengths of hair, but made it longer, and styled it as very thick curled locs (when he's older, he pulls his hair back into a ponytail. if I ever do a redesign for Kevin, when he's older I'd actually give him a short punk-buzzed undercut to be different than his long hair as a kid). I also decided to make Ben more chubby; I think it is nice to see main characters who aren't all cookie-cutter skinny, and it isn't just a joke or something they have to stop being (he is indeed still chubby when he's older). Gwen tries very hard to fit in at her school, while Ben has gone in the other direction; if he's gonna stand out, then at least he's getting attention, right? So he's the class-clown, which isn't always appreciated by the teachers. Making people laugh is also a good way to defuse bullies, but that doesn't always work either. So, Ben has unfairly been labelled a trouble-maker and a target for jerks... well, now he's going the be a hero! In fact, several different heroes! He's a little over-excited to use the Omnitrix for fun in the beginning, but eventually learns how think things through, becoming very responsible and clever (while still keeping his sense of humor). I gave Ben a black and gray baseball pattern shirt (not seen are his classic green pants)
I combined many different things I like about different versions of Starfire; obviously working within the style of the 2003 show, but I made her hair slightly more of a magenta-red like in GO. Initially, I did a lot more tiny, detailed lines with her curls, which didn't look "bad", but didn't match the rest of the style. I tried to compromise with thicker shapes and volume all through the hair! I stream-lined her clothing; she has a backless swimsuit-style outfit instead of a two-piece top and skirt (to make Raven a little different, she'd have a sleeveless dress that ends in a short skirt and matches her cloak, going over the black bodysuit that covers her arms and legs). The outfits where she is basically just in underwear with suspenders across her chest bug me (not for prudish reasons, I just think it looks annoying haha), but there is an important balance between "overly-sexualizing certain characters is a major issue" and "treating anybody that isn't white that showing their skin at all is automatically sexual is a big problem". I didn't want Starfire to be covered up and hidden as if there was something "shameful", but I also didn't want her to just... be in underwear with suspenders across her chest, thank you. This looks like something kinda cool, from an alien world, minimal clothing, bust still comfortable and functional. I changed up the pattern of accents, so they look distinctly different from other characters, and gave her rounder gauntlets that are also similar to what she has in GO. Her eyes and her face have a somewhat diamond-shape to them, and the green in her eyes doesn't have a dark line dividing the colors. Even though she is "orange", I wanted it to not be uncertain that she is definitely Black, so she's a deep warm shade of orange-brown, with a broad shape to her nose, and a defined upper/lower lip
