Day 22 - Anniversary @nh2021

Objectives: 

- to prove that the movie does not contradict the manga (and it is actually a canon material) - to explain Naruto’s feelings (that he DID NOT fall for Hinata in the movie,rather, he REALIZED his romanticfeelings for her all along)

Note: Actually, I did not plan to write an essay about this. But, it makes me upset to see some Naruto fans (esp. some NH fans) to think that the movie is filler and it regress NH development. This essay has around 10, 000 words.

First let’s talk about how legit the movie is. 1. Kishimoto himself said that the movie is part of the actual storyline.

This is the statement of Kishi:

“The latest film is a love story. It will depict what happened between the 699th and 700th manga episodes. I designed the characters and helped make the story.”

I emphasized “helped” because I think, some misunderstood this word. Others might say. “Oh, its filler because Kishi just helped in the script.” But you are wrong. Remember, Kishi’s position in the movie is “script supervisor.”

Actually, I work in a production company/TV station. Script supervisor is like the head writer a.k.a the leader of the creative group. The writers will write (of course) the script (like dialogue etc., more on the details) but the script supervisor/head writer ACTUALLY gives the whole plot or story flow. What I’m trying to say is… writers will just comply on what the head writer wants. After the writers, finished the script… The head writer will edit it on how he wants it.

In a TV interview, kishi himself said that he was HEAVILY involved in the movie. That he edit the script the way he wanted.

Head writer, writers actually do the story, NOT the director/production company/animators

For those who don’t know, the director’s main job is to handle the aesthetics of the film (like camera angle, animations etc). In other words, they not really heavily involve on the script. There role is to make the script materialized or how to convey the story in a creative way. (ex. the director of the last said that he wants to make the genjutsu scene look like a puzzle). His subordinates are the animators.

SP suggested the romance theme because they felt it was what the series is lacking. (THEY just suggest the theme of the movie, not forced NH to be together. that’s different)

Kishi earlier said that he did not plan to make a story on how NH got together. Some might misinterpret this. Anti-ending people might say… “oh kishi is forced to do NH pairing,” but NO. He just did not plan to elaborate on HOW they got together (or how/when they officially got together). But NH paring..It was plan all along!

KISHI NEVER STATED THAT HE DID NOT WANT TO MAKE A ROMANCE BETWEEN NARUTO AND HINATA.

That’s why, even without the last. The ending of Naruto is still acceptable /obvious.

Actually, it’s the first time that Kishi said that a movie is part of the canon timeline. Hence, this movie is very special.

I remember a chapter in Naruto, when Edo Minato and the other Kages were fading… Naruto tried to restate what Kushina said to him. The last thing that Naruto has’nt done yet is the ‘love aspect’

Well, guess what…. The Last is the answer.

Even the advertisers called this film Ch. 699.5. And more importantly, Kishi made a comic called “after the last”. If this movie is not canon, why would he bother to do a canon comic?

The movie, NEVER, contradict the manga. Cause the supervisor is KISHI himself. The movie actually confirmed a lot of things that is vague in the manga. Like hamura’s character and Naruto’s feeling for Sakura (actually, for me, this one is pretty obvious in the manga) this movie CONFIRMED that Naruto’s feelings for Sakura were SHALLOW. Just ask yourself, why Naruto “liked” Sakura (aside from being beautiful?)

You might say, “ohhhhh but Naruto and Hinata were OCC in the movie.”

The movie just shows the side of Naruto that we did not know: the romance. It’s normal to sulk after heartbreak. Of course, it’s the first time we saw naruto like this because hinata is his first love.

As for Hinata, you might say “ohhh she’s shy/timid/dont have confidence again. It regress her dev in the manga.” Not actually. Remember, it’s a diff situation. Naruto has a lot of admires. And actually, its Hinata’s first time to pursuit a relationship with naruto (i will not detail this. This is already explained in remedialaction’s essay, which I really love)

Many anti-ending/NH complained on how NH’s relationship is forced, underdeveloped, came out of nowhere etc. And the last proves that NH moments in the manga were platonic.

Well, I disagree. I bet these people forgot the essence of the NH development in the manga. Remember, the movie is based on the manga. Hence, all the NH moments were taken account in the movie. This is just logic: if NH moments were not present in the manga, then the last would not exist at all.

And remember, Kishi made a movie guidebook about NH moments. So it’s all legit. Kishi laid out the foundation of their relationship from the very beginning/

NH moments in the manga were not platonic. (remember, the title of the NH dev. in the guidebook is Uzumaki “LOVE” scroll)

Do you think holding hands, seeing through eyes, transforming to 6 (almost 9) tails were not romantic? If you said yes, then you are missing the context.

I remember what my history professor in college said, “always look at the context.” that’s the only way to understand/analyze a moment in our history.

Let’s discuss the confession. Naruto turned 6-tails after Pain attacked Hinata. Hence, Hinata is the trigger of the transformation (as what naruto confirmed in chapter. 490)

People might say anyone would trigger the transformation. But really, do you think he will transform when pain attack Sai, Shikamaru, Ino, Chouji, Neji, Lee, tenten? Even sakura? I bet NO.

Remember, when Gaara died, he just turned 2 tails. When Jiraiya and Kakashi died, he did not even transform. Antis may argue… “Maybe he transformed because of the shock that his friend attacked right in front of him” or “the seal is weakening”

But ask yourself why Hinata of all the people???? Why she triggered the worst feelings that Naruto ever felt. Even the seal is weak, it still needs enough force/level of rage for Naruto to transform

Remember? Context. The situation clearly shows that Naruto have strong connection (love) for Hinata. Pain even said that love breeds hate. No, he’s not talking about Hinata’s feeling… He is talking about Naruto. Pain assumed that the girl that he attacked is special to Naruto. That’s why he said “do you hate me now?”

Let’s go to the “in your eyes” moment… Actually, this is one of my favorite moments. It’s just so romantic that both of them can see the truth in their eyes.

Antis said Naruto only felt Hinata’s feelings because of the kyuubi mode. But remember, he can only feel malice in this mode… Not read others thoughts. If he can feel negative feelings, then he might also know the suspicion of Neji and the rest.

Also, the movie guidebook also confirms this moment. “Naruto reads feeling of weakness reflected in Hinata’s eyes…. The two were connected so strongly that they could communicate in their eyes”

Aside from Hinata, there is no other person Naruto can read through eyes.

Also, look at the reaction of neji, shino at kiba after that moment. I bet they were all thinking “there is something fishy going on between these two”

In chapter 615, Naruto held Hinata’s hand. That only means one thing. ————— So, does that mean that he loves Hinata all along? Yes. Naruto did all these romantic moments with Hinata subconsciously. He’s just stupid or dense that’s why he did not know it is romantic love. And the last movie explained this (that he cannot distinguish the difference between love of ramen and loving a person).

One of the many complains in the movie is the pacing. For just a day or so… relationship between Naruto and Hinata changed. Let’s look closely.

Mission timeline: Day 1: the team goes to a snowy place, goes to the genjutsu lake, toneri ask hinata’s hand, naruto became bashfull, naruto saw hinata knitting the scarf

Day 2: Naruto did not wear Kushina’s scarf. Naruto and Hinata flirting. Otsutski monument. Hinata request Naruto to leave her alone for a moment

Day 3: Hinata tries to stay away from naruto. In the night, naruto confessed. Then hinata goes to toneri.

Yes… Within 3 days… I want to focus on day 1 and 2. This is when Naruto know his own feelings

So quickly, he acted different towards Hinata. What reason? The answer is of course, love.

But is it possible to fall in love within days? The answer is NO. Cause love is not an instant thing.

Does that mean the relationship of Naruto and Hinata is forced in the movie? NO. Why? Because Naruto did not fall for Hinata in the movie. HE JUST REALIZED HE LOVES HER ALL ALONG

Remember, he did not know the meaning of loving someone until the genjutsu trap. This gave him a context of Hinata’s feelings. After that, he examined his own feeling. Actually, this is elaborated in the last light novel.

It’s more like my dreams and memories were mixed together. And so about Hinata, does that mean that I also…” Naruto blushed involuntarily and for an instant, he looked at Hinata.

Clearly, the trap does not forced naruto to love hinata.

It just triggered something within Naruto’s heart.

Just think of it. When a person confessed to you. You would not fall for him/her instantly. Unless, you also have feelings for him/her all along.

And another thing… Why do you thing Sakura encourage Hinata in the first place. If she thinks that hinata will be just get rejected? (as what ugamyrain said before)

While Naruto was unconscious and Sakura’s healing him.. She said “you finally got it. Blockhead” (cause Naruto repeatedly said “Hinata”)

This only means one thing: Sakura know that Naruto love Hinata all along.

Sakura’s statement not only meant that naruto finally understand hinata’s feeling. Also, he understands HIS OWN FEELING. (Actually, the latter is more appropriate because of the context of the scene. Remember, Naruto keep repeating Hinata’s name, before Sakura said he finally gets it)

When/how did naruto fall for hinata? Well it is in the manga. I already explained that.

Conclusion: the movie does not contradict the manga. It actually supported our theory before: Naruto has feelings for Hinata all along.

HOW DOES THE LAST: NARUTO MOVIE - DIFFERS FROM THE NOVEL?

I made this post to properly analyze The last movie, by comparing it with its novel adaptation. I’ll be focusing only on the most important parts related to Naruto and Hinata, skipping the rest of it.

Personally, The Last movie is still one of my favorites. But the novel added much more depth and clarity in comparison. This blog includes all the missing or altered parts from the novel (which I felt mattered) that were never adapted in the movie. I had posted this elsewhere before, but now I wanted to share it here.
