A…dragon in disguise? Normally, that was the sort of thing that might happen in his books, but not in real life. Then again, so far, he’d seen already one impossible thing - people actually being able to see and speak with him, so perhaps this place was the sort of area where fiction would come to life. It made him hold his book all the closer, feeling a little worried if something would leap from it’s pages next.
“…Not as far as I know. Sorry to let your hopes down. I h-have amnesia, though, so I could be a dragon stuck in a human form. This body doesn’t feel like my usual one.”
He said this in such a quiet tone it was legitimately hard to tell if he was serious or just being very sarcastic here.
“…B-bored? When you’re stuck in a scary place like this, with heaps of mysteries? That’s kind of…strange. With a place full of mysteries…I’d have thought nobody would be…bored…”
Real life was a lot more…active than any book, to say the least.
Yuka nodded. She wasn’t sure whether he was speaking the truth and, even then, she wouldn’t have anything to offer him. She was certain she was human and she was absolutely sure she hadn’t done anything of note that would be interesting to a dragon if he were or had been one.So, she nodded as if she understood although, really, she didn’t.
“Ah,” Yuka began with a tilt of her head. “That’s true but I can’t really bring myself to go exploring.” She leaned forward with a sort of shrug traveling up her shoulders. “I’ve heard there’s monsters in some places and I’m not really fit to fight if they’re super strong. I’ll just wait for everyone to go out first before I see it for myself.” Yuka smiled before throwing the question back to him. “And how about you? Discovered any mysteries?”
misstep.
They were both…worried, weren’t they? Even knowing this, the troll couldn’t calm himself, his discomfort growing by the minute. That was just the way Darkleer was. Put him in front of an enemy to fight, and he would be done in an instant, tearing them to shreds before they even had a chance to realize what was happening. But when it came to talking, communicating, especially with the unknown, the base, the mysterious…what was he to do?
-+-> Hu…man
Another word he had to test out. It sounded…strange. Unnatural. But at the same time, it had a certain familiar comfortableness to it that made it settle on the tongue. Darkleer shook his horned head, his long hair swaying slightly. What would she be, if not alien?
-+-> 1 am…a tr011 -+-> Tr011s are a11 1 have e%perienced bef0re
As she looked up at him, he gritted his teeth harder, the sharp whites grating against each other in a state of tension.
-+-> But -+-> We’re b0th dead n0w… -+-> S0 1 guess it d0esn’t matter very much
There was a struggle in the sound as he tried to shape the word into something familiar and Yuka realized her sudden rarity. It was bad, she knew, for her to be so delighted in their situation but she never thought she would be quite so unusual. Humans were common. That’s all they ever were. That’s all she ever was. Humanity was so bored with themselves they had created different types of humanoids like elves and mages and gods that appeared like them but were better. She never thought that, to those on the other side, humans would be the different, the new.
Yuka gave her cheeks a light pat with her fingertips. Danger was still all around them and here she was happily thinking about fairy tales and bedtime stories, although none of them really put trolls in a good light. “I’ve never met a troll but the ones I read about lived under bridges or in caves.” She started then stopped. “Not that there’s anything bad if you actually do! I-uh. I guess it doesn’t matter but I’m happy to meet you, anyway. Thanks for saving me. Dying again would have...sucked.”
misstep.
-+-> Scary…
The word rolled off of the troll’s tongue as if it were something foreign, unknown to him. His mouth was twisted in a way that made him look like he was trying to understand something, trying with all of his heart to figure out what she meant by her words. What he had stated was a simple truth. It wasn’t meant to elicit an emotional response. It definitely wasn’t supposed to elicit an apology.
What did this small, small creature have to apologize to him for?
Approaching her slowly, Darkleer looked down at the girl, tilting his head slightly. She must have been less than half as tall as he was, and the difference was made all the more striking at her cowering. He didn’t know what to do, and that made him sweat even more, a natural discomfort rolling off of his body. Even so, he started to reach out, before slowly pulling his hand back. No, not now.
-+-> What…are y0u -+-> 1′ve never seen anything that 100ks 1ike y0u… -+-> C0u1d y0u be…an a1ien
The back of her eyes started to sting with the uncomfortable warmth and so Yuka raised her other hand to cover the rest of her face. She knew that it was understandable by human standards, she had probably almost died, but she felt pathetic nonetheless. The other person had saved her and still she was being a bother. Opening her eyes she stared at the darkness created by the palm of her hands and breathed shaking breaths.
Stop. The word began to play on a loop. Yuka commanded herself. Stop. The trembling breaths slowed, her shaking subsided. Stop. Lowering her hands to either side of her face, Yuka stared at the ground. “I-” She started just to test her voice. It was weak but constant. “I’m a human.” Then, the question prompted some wondering on her part. If he was not a human, what was he? The train of thought lead to another inquiry. If he was not human, then she was technically an alien, right? Her hands fell to her sides as she raised her head. “Am I an alien to you?”

Upon receiving the update, Yuka’s features brightened. “I’ll get to eat hot soup on a snowy day!” Forget about having died, she was ecstatic.
stare.
Oh…why was it that the strangers in this strange place always seemed to think staring at him was a interesting pastime? S-surely they had better things to do, like figure out where this place was, why they were all here. Or, get to know the general layout of the place so it wasn’t as scary intimidating or confusing. Nope, instead they just stared. A lot.
No matter how he raised his book to his face and hid behind it, he could still feel the stares. A downside of being able to be ‘seen’, to be certain - he was shy, and having all these people staring at him was making trying to get used to an already-scary place a lot scarier than it needed to be.
“…Is there….s-something on my face? P-please don’t…look at me that way….”
It also didn’t help his timid nature a jot, evidently.
As soon as he spoke, Yuka realized his normalcy. It had been a foolish thought, anyway, the one she had entertained. Even if Amaranth was made of various worlds all its inhabitants could be from Earth or some other similar planet. There was a hint of disappointment that she tried to ignore. It would have been fun to know other lands, that fairy tales had some sort of truth that wasn’t moral or thematic. She wanted magic and wonder, not good and evil or right and wrong.
“Sorry, I just had a silly thought. With all the different worlds talk, I imagined you’d end up being a dragon in disguise or something.” She closed her book. “ I’m probably just too bored.”

On Alternia, there was only one rule everyone had to follow. That rule was survival of the fittest. If you were weak, unadjusted, or unprepared, then you perished, either from the wild beasts surrounding you or from one of your more vicious troll neighbors. It was a predatory paradise, everyone taking from the weak at the first sign of slipping up.
One thing these monsters likely did not expect was the presence of someone who had been conditioned by a place like that his entire life. Moving at a speed one could only describe as unnatural, the gray-blue form sped through the clearing like a train off its rails, crushing anything in its way. A single strike caused the smaller ones to evaporate instantly, and the rest were torn apart into submission with massive hands, the horned being’s massive muscles bulging as he made short work of these pursuing beasts.
The ground was littered with gold by the time they were all gone, leaving only one massive, fanged creature behind, breathing heavily and wiping the sweat from his face.
-+-> H0w…unc00th
When he finally spoke, his voice was a strange mix of a low growl and a whisper, both nervous and threatening at once. Darkleer turned to face the victim in all this, eyes hidden by his headgear, his mouth twisted into an uncomfortable grimace.

There was a rush like wind, a gust behind her, and Yuka could only comprehend her fear. She had yet to look back and did not wish to, feeling as if her seeing whoever or whatever had joined the pack behind her would solidify the threat she was under. But she stalled, her running steps slowing to tired, weary thuds in the earth. And she turned.
She wasn’t sure what to say. Presented before her was not the pack of monsters nor the giant bird she had envisioned but another being altogether. Yuka stared but her attention was caught by the twinkling of the gold pieces scattered on the ground, their shine reflecting the waning sun. She was safe. Probably. The thought then repeated. She was safe. Someone was here. She was safe. The more it was thought, the truer it sounded.
Then the thought receded and the words he said were brought to mind. “U-” What was she to say? It was true. Yuka had strolled into a new area without quite realizing her circumstances. She had overestimated herself. The sensation she had felt when she first defeated the monsters at the very beginning surfaced again and brought a prickling warmth to her features. How dumb, really. She closed her eyes and wiped at her face. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking at all. I thought...it doesn’t matter. God, that was scary.”

Please. Yuka ran. Her feet thumped against dirt and her breath burned her lungs with every bitten back curse. She was fast but she was not sure. The forest had begun to loom in growing shadows from the tilted sunlight. And from those shadows rose monsters: creatures dark and smiling, thorned ivy for stretching arms. How they moved. They leaped from grey to grey, from the shade of one tree to another, as easily and quickly as one breathed. Yuka had made a mistake.
They were small at first, little creatures she could bat away easily. And bat away she did. They disappeared in puffs of smoke and left coin behind. Feeling bold( and liking the sensation of being bold), she drew herself further step by step until the entrance was somewhere behind her covered by trees and bushes. She did not feel so bold now. Yuka ducked beneath low branches and broke into a clearing running. It stung, her breath, her skin, her thoughts. Please.

The sun had risen to be blocked out by the tower’s top. Spiral’s End took no notice of the sun’s rays, its interior cool and drafty. Yuka zipped up her jacket and tightened her ponytail. She stood at the very bottom of the staircase that wound up the center of the spire, lips pursed as she stared up at its height. It was a simple task today, something she could actually accomplish. Before she officially moved into any room, she wanted to explore the levels. She wanted to reach the top.
A sinking of shoulders and a deep breath exhaled. There was something rising in her chest, a kind of fluttering anticipation that coursed through her body, drove her to clench her fists and raise her head. “Alright! Yuka’s tower trip is a-go. Time to depart!”

Her booklet hovered inches in front of her face, covering most of her features from view save for her eyes. She had scanned though its contents quickly-it hadn’t been much. Everything seemed to mirror a tourist’s guide to an attraction as opposed to an actual guide for surviving or living in the afterlife. Yuka supposed it was the afterlife. The person had told her she had died, that her world probably followed after. But, what of the people here?
Yuka peered over the thin pages of the booklet, sight resting on a person some distance away from her. Perhaps, he would give her some answers. She stared, trying to find some anomaly in his actions. Amaranth was connected to various worlds but Yuka knew nothing of the others that inhabited the afterlife. Would he sprout wings? Would he breathe fire? Her gaze rested, lingered, and solidified to an almost heavily felt weight.

Hello, all! I’m Efi though you may know me better as Sugar mod. I am horrible at managing my time as you can see because while I had all the time in the world to make my character blogs and plan my characters out-I didn’t. I am so sorry everyone is such a work in progress. I cry.
Anyway, though, you can contact me at @sleepyefi! I’ll probably get things in order later because it is 4 in the morning and I am suffering.
