summary: you and your best friend made it to produce 48 togetherβ what led up to the fallout? who is it youβre singing about? what do you do when the stress boils over?
pairing(s): trainee!huh yunjin x trainee!fem!reader
tags: angst, imagined unrequited love, eventual happy ending
wc: 1.1k
cw: implied sexual content, internalized homophobia, period typical homophobia, mentions of dieting.
ex: 135 notes.. thank you all so much!! i didnβt expect anyone to really like it. i hope you enjoy this backstory :-)
also, this is an au, not following real eventsβ y/n and yunjin are 18 and 19 in produce48, yunjin debuts three years later at 22, and y/n at 21.
(not beta read π)
you didnβt expect a survival show to be so stressful- now, you were well aware how difficult itβd be, you knew you would have to practice, and sing, and dance, and diet- but, you didnβt expect the constant stress of the possibility of being eliminated every day.
but, you chose this, right? all for her, all for your sun.
βy/n! Come on, letβs practice this final part, yeah? I think I figured out the footwork-β yunjin mumbled, rambling about something or other. you were distracted by her face, she was soo pretty-
βy/n, are you even listening to me?β she said, grinning. your face turned a pretty shade of red, and you spluttered. βWhat? No, no! I was totally paying attention, I swearβ something about.. footwork?β You guessed, desperately.
βitβs fine, just, come here- Iβll teach you,β she smiled, and it took all you had to not just fall right there.
after one particularly harsh judge had humiliated yunjin, she slammed the door of the room you shared with about two other contestants. they werenβt there, at the moment.
yunjin angrily began to rummage through her things, and you sat up. βjen? Whatβs wrong? I mean, I know what the judge said was mean but- you know thatβs not true, right?β you began, getting up and starting to walk over to her before she whipped her head around, glaring at you.
βIt IS fucking true, y/n, just because they always let you fuck up βcause the fans love you doesnβt mean youβre suddenly qualified to give advice-β she spat, standing up from her spot on the floor, her fists clenched as she jabbed her finger into your chest harshly. βYou probably think youβre so much better than me, donβt you? I bet-β you cut her off, cupping her face in your hands. βjen- jen, I donβt think that, and you do not get to talk to me like that just because youβre mad,β you began, words steady and stern, and when you watched your best friends eyes glaze over, a bit, felt her gaze flicker down to your lips, felt your face flush and felt her lean inβ
well, it was all you could do to tug her closer, kissing her, tasting the stupid citrus lip balm sheβs used for years, that youβve thought about every single day of your waking lifeβ
and if someone asked, was it all worth it? the pain, the exhaustion, the work, just for this?
βwell,β youβd reply, βoranges were always my favorite fruit.β
you cupped her face with one hand, threading your fingers in her hair with the other, pushing her onto your bed, and it was all teeth, you biting her lip, you moving your hands down, her speaking incoherently.
βplease,β sheβd breathe out, the words just whispers on the wind. and youβd always been the one under her mercy, begging her to love you- and now here she was, begging for you to touch her. youβd always dreamed of touching the sun. youβd always think of Icarus, in these moments. your wings were yet to melt from the heat and warmth, though, so you figured it was fine.
and, well, the fall would hurt, but it was all you could do, to fall into eachother, again, and again.
waking up was always worse. your dorm mates still werenβt back, they had a penchant to pass out in the practice room. you kinda thanked them, for that.
sometimes youβd wake up in the middle of the night, just so you could see her sleeping. just so you could see her before she would leave in the morning.
yeah, you lived together, but come 8 in the morning, sheβd be gone. except for the first time. except for before you fell asleep.
β..y/n?β she asked quietly, voice barely above a whisper.
βmhm?β you hummed, half asleep in your bed.
βthis didnβt mean anything, right? im not mad at you, im sorry. i was just stressed, and frustrated- and- we can still be friends, right? it wonβt change?β she whispered, and it was the only time youβve ever seen her this nervous around you. the first time she had really been vulnerable since you both got on this stupid show.
what changed? was it the having to compete against each other? yeah. it was probably that.
βyeah,β you mumbled, feeling your chest constrict, your heart fracture, tears stinging your eyes, and you were so glad she couldnβt see your face. βyeah, jen- itβs casual. weβre still best friends,β you reassured, giving a smile that didnβt reach your eyes. why were you smiling, anyway? she couldnβt see you. sheβs never seen you. βokay, y/n. good night. i love you,β she mumbled, turning to the wall.
βgoodnight, jen. i love you,β you whispered, turning your back to her, and staring at the empty bed across the room. wasnβt it poetic that she was in your bed, and youβd never be in hers? you laughed inwardly, no humor in it. you were so, so bitter.
this stupid game kept up, you kept giving in to it, and you kept losing- atleast it gave you writing material, right?
βy/n,β your dorm mate- chaewon, you think? βyou should stop,β she murmured. you stared at her through tired eyes. βstop what?β you said, playing dumb. βyou know. I think- I think itβs.. itβs not good for you,β she mumbled, uncomfortable. βI appreciate it, but Iβm fine,β you assured, giving a well-practiced smile. βThanks for caring,β you nodded, slipping out of the chair youβve been sitting in for an hour and a halfβ instead of sleeping, youβd either be with your βbest friendβ, or writing about her- god, you were such a lovesick fool. Crumpled paper took up the majority of your desk, and you left it all splayed out, in front of Chaewon, slipping away to go practice till you dropped. The trainee life, youβd think.
βyou said/ weβre not together/so now when we kiss/ I have anger issues,β
chaewon stared at the paper, vaguely. she couldnβt read english, obviously, and was half tempted to put it in a translator, but she just turned around, leaving the room as well to go practice.
βand I try to be the chill girl/that holds her tongue and gives you space/i try to be the chill girl/but honestly/im not,β
and then she got eliminated. and you broke down. and you lived in that practice room. and your roommates would stare at you in pity, and you hated it, you hated being something pitiable.
you hated loving your best friend. your fall hurt like hell, your stupid wax wings broke. you didnβt fall into her, noβ you fell into the sea, cold, salty, roughβ you hated the cold. but maybe youβd get used to it.

jennifer had been your best friend since highschoolβ or I guess you should say huh yunjin, now. you both met in your freshman year, and bonded over your love of music and dance. she was loud, extroverted, but not in an obnoxious wayβ she was like the sun, shining brightly, oozing charisma. She lit up a room, and it was all you could do to chase her warmth like a desperate, frost-bitten flower.
you were still extroverted, albeit enjoying time away from people. you werenβt popular, you were a bit more reserved, a bit more closed off, but relatively well liked for your humor and academic prowess. You had one or two close friends, one of them being yunjin.
it was the summer before 2019 when she told you she wanted to be an idol. You were sleeping over at her house, since your parents were fighting, again. you, who had no real plans after highschool, whose parents didnβt really care what became of their daughterβ you smiled and held her hand. Youβd follow the sun anywhere it went.
you both made it onto produce 48, jumping up and down, screaming and crying for just the pure joy of it. Alone, again, with her, you held her head in your hands, finally kneeling in front of each other on the hardwood floor, your foreheads touching as you both panted, giggling and smiling still. The moment quickly broke away when you heard the door open, breaking apart faster than you could blink. Thatβs when it all started, you could say. When you realized you might like your best friend.
you were a rising star, praised for your smooth, detailed dance and soft, honey way of singing. You began to rank higher and higher, everyone loved youβ everyone but your best friend. Everyone but who you wished would love you.
a part of you thinks if you werenβt going through your angsty teenaged romance, you wouldnβt have tried as hard to debut as you did. All your songs were about her, her hair, her voice, her eyesβ everything about her. She was your reason to keep going. Maybe she deserved some credit, after all, you would never had been as popular if everyone wasnβt so curious to know who Koreaβs new rising rookie was so in love with.
when yunjin was eliminated, it was the worst day of your life. The cameras caught you, with your hand over your mouth, frozen, tears falling down your face. You struggled to breath, but finally got up and ran to her. You didnβt even care if the cameras caught you, you didnβt care- you just needed her- your best friend- you needed her.
you cried for days. you tried not to bother anyone, muffling it with a pillow. you got so good at crying quietly, but everyday youβd wake up with puffy, red-rimmed eyes, and got told to cover them up. You tried to keep contact, but she βcouldnβt handle the reminder,β right now, or so she said. Either way, there was a hundred messages you sent before you got that sharp reminder that you would never be anything more than a friend. maybe less, now. She was never yours. You were on borrowed time. the sun shares its warmth with the whole world, you were just naive enough to believe it was you who allowed it to be shared.
after that, Koreaβs rising star fell back to earth. The pretty sunflower wilted, and broke apart. You were eliminated shortly after, and some people put two and two together. There was never enough proof for a scandal, but some people believed that you fell apart because that person you were writing about left, but they still werenβt sure who. God, theyβre so dumb.
you continued to be a trainee, lying in wait.
you got called into a meeting. You had the opportunity to debut in a new group. Le Sserafim, they called it, an anagram for im fearless. A part of you laughed. you were never fearless. You were a coward. You couldnβt even tell her how much you loved her. You didnβt try to think about it, though. You hadnβt heard that name in yearsβ
it was three years before you heard the name huh yunjin again. She was coming back, and she was going to debut. In the same group.
and like coming home after years of being lost. obviously, you were ecstatic.
all the starving, all the work, all the tears and pain and sufferingβ it was all for her. itβd all be worth it to feel her warmth again, to get your sun back, to end this constant winter.
Youβd get to be her sunflower, again.
The heat of August in Korea was in full force, and you were wearing nothing too impressive, just a Nirvana shirt youβd had for years and a pair of baggy jeans when you saw her. To be completely transparent, you had heard her before you saw her. You could never forget that laugh. You peeked your head from behind the wall, peering down the corridor. You practically ran to her.
You beamed, barely contained excitement buzzing around you. βJEN! Youβre back! Oh my god, how are you? I missed y-β you were cut off. She smiled at you, but it didnβt look.. real. It look practiced. She didnβt smile at you like how she used to.
βIβm good, and yeah, itβs great to be back. Nice to see you again, y/n,β she nodded, before she continued walking with the staff member into a different room, farther down along the corridor.
What just happened? Did she.. not like you, anymore? Did she forget? Did she move on? What were you sayingβ there was nothing to move on from. Stress relief, she called it. Just a distraction. Casual, easy, quick. What were you thinking? No, really, what were you thinking? She had only dated guys all throughout high school, you were probably just her experiment, just something she tried out.
You decided to find out.
You cornered her in a hallway. Not very classy, you know, but where else could you find her?
βJen- is there a reason you stopped talking to me? I just- you probably know, weβre gonna debut together now, we need to.. work together. I just- I need to know. Did it mean nothing to you? You were my best friend,β
Yunjin looked vaguely uncomfortable, cringing towards the wall, looking to the side before she spoke. βListen, y/n, weβre about to debut. Iβm about to debut. Iβve been working on this for years, and so have you. Why would we throw it all away? We should focus on our debut, not whatever silly things we did when we were younger,β she shrugged, giving a practiced grin. βBesides, it was never serious, right? You know how I am, we both agreed we were just bored-β
βBored? Because we were fucking bored? Youβve got to be kidding me, Jen. Thereβs no way you believe that- I fucking loved you-β
βYeah, well, itβs over now. Weβre debuting. Get it together,β she spat acidly, pushing past you and opening the door to the practice studio before looking over her shoulder. βI mean it, y/n. Just forget about it. It didnβt mean anything to me, and it shouldnβt have meant anything to you either,β she said icily, about to close the door. βJust call me Yunjin, now,β she muttered, door clicking shut behind her, leaving you a bitter, heart broken mess.
you didnβt follow. You figured she needed time alone- she didnβt need you, anymore. you wouldnβt have known how wrong she felt saying it, how it felt like ripping out her heart every time she watched your face break. It was for your own good, she thought. You didnβt need her ruining your chances. You both wanted this, right? To debut? That was the dreamβ she was doing you a favor.
βIβm sorry, sir, but I donβt think I can debut in a group,β you said seriously, your hands clasped together. βI would rather be a soloist.. Iβve already written a few songs, Iβve planned the conceptβ you know how popular I was during Produce 48, right? I swear, just give me a shot-β You pleaded, beginning to ramble before he cut you off.
βY/n, youβre an excellent singer, and a well-rounded dancer. Youβre an asset, to say the least. I never really wanted you in a group to begin with. I think you have a future as a soloist,β he smiled, nodding. βSure, why not? Tell me your ideas,β
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
it all went from there. You were gonna debut. Either way, even if you were in a group- it wouldnβt be with your best friend, Jennifer. Itβd be with Huh Yunjin, idol extraordinaire. You didnβt like her, much. You didnβt want to be her flower, or anyones, for that matter. Returning to the ground was a better choice. Sunflowers were always too bright for you anyway. You preferred white carnations, anyway.
You made your debut around the same time as Le Sserafim, and it was a smash hit. You released your debut album, LIMERENCE, with the title track βGood Luck, Babe!β You were widely praised, forums discussing whether or not the song was about the same person you sang about in Produce 48. They were right, of course, but theyβd never guess who. You were on a music show, getting your first win. The Le Sserafim members clapped, and you smiled graciously at them, your gaze lingering on Yunjinβs before you turned to the cameras, smiling, waving, holding the trophy before you were handed the mic for an encore. You smiled, readjusting the trophy in your arms before your voice began to ring out on the loud stage.
βIβm fine, itβs cool, you can say that we are nothing but you know the truth,β you began, glancing at Yunjin not-so-subtlely.
βand guess Iβm the fool, with her arms out like an angel through the car sun roof,β memories of fooling around, joking, sneaking out your parents house to meet her, to meet Yunjin. βI donβt wanna call it off, but you donβt wanna call it love,β your voice grew in volume, periodically facing and waving at the cameras, before facing Yunjin once again. You really didnβt care if this was posted on forums, saying there was something going on saying you were rude, you didnβt careβ you just needed her to know.
βYou only wanna be the one that I call baby,β Yunjin tensed under your gaze, averting her eyes. Sakura and Chaewon looked at her knowingly, a bit disappointed. Kazuha and Eunchae looked a bit confused on why, exactly, you were staring at Yunjin like you wanted her to explode.
βYou could kiss a hundred boys in bars, shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling. You could say itβs just the way you are, make a new excuse, another stupid reason,β memories of the seen texts, never responded to, flashed through Yunjinβs mind. That stupid argument a few months ago- was this about her? Who was she kidding, of course it was about her, y/n only loved her. She was secure, in that. She hated it though, she didnβt want to ruin your chances, you should move on from herβ she wasnβt good for you, she never would be, you deserved better.
βGood luck, babe! Well, good luck, babe! Youβd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling. Good luck, babe! Well good luck, babe! Youβd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling,β you walked across the stage, staring into the cameras as you said this. You winked, giving a winning smile before continuing. βIβm cliche, who cares? Itβs a sexually explicit kind of love affair,β another wink. βAnd I cry, itβs not fair,β you gave a theatric frown, pouting. βI just need a little lovin, I just need a little air,β You kept your gaze off Yunjin for the next few lyrics, acting as if you were now pleading to the crowd, the cameras, for love. Yunjin continued to watch nervously. Why werenβt you looking at her anymore? It started to sound as if you were really, actually over her.
βThink Iβm gonna call it off, even if you call it love. I just wanna love someone who calls me baby-β you began again, gaze lingering on Kazuha, winking at her general direction, waving, and turning back to the cameras. You continued to sing, entertaining the crowd before beginning to look a little more bitter, a little more jaded, a little more angry. βWhen you wake up next to him in the middle of the night, with your head in your hands, youβre nothing more than his wife. And when you think about me, all of those years ago, youβre standing face to face with βI told you soβ, you know I hate to say it, βI told you so,β you know I hate to say, but- I told you so!β You cried, clutching the mic as you sang passionately, years of resentment, of confusion, of anger, of regret, pain- everything you had felt for Yunjin, everything you would feel. This is what this was for.
βYou could kiss a hundred boys in bars, shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling, you can say itβs just the way you are, make a new excuse, another stupid reason,β you spat, making brief eye contact with Yunjin, hatred flashing in your eyes, a mask for the hurt to wear.
βGood luck, babe, well good luck, babe. Youβd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling. Good luck, babe. Well good luck, babe! Youβd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling,β you sang, crescendo falling, the song ending as the crowd cheered your name, and you finally walked off stage. You walked the building until you found an isolated part with little to no people. You leaned on the vending machine next to the water fountain, sighing. You told your manager you had to use the bathroom, but it was just an excuse to slip away.
You looked up when you heard footsteps. It was the pretty Le Sserafim member you saw standing near Sakura. Kazuha, you think her name was? Youβd have to double check.
βOh, hello,β You smiled, bowing slightly.
βAck- oh, hello! Congratulations on your win- I liked your song,β The Japanese girl bowed, clasping her hands together.
βThank you, I quite liked your song as well,β You praised. βYouβre very pretty,β you said, a slight grin on your face as the other girl blushed, spluttering with her words. βWhatβs your name?β βKazuha- Nakamura Kazuha,β she responded quickly, stuttering. You figured she was Japanese from her name, and smiled warmly. βitβs nice to meet you, then. Iβm Y/n,β You nodded, outstretching your hand, leaning in close to the flustered girl. She took it and you shook her hand, before hearing another set of footsteps.
you looked up to see Yunjin, who looked a tad angry. βY/n. Congratulations on your win,β she said in a stilted, stiff tone.
βThank you, Yunjin,β you replied back coolly, carefully practiced facade slipping back into place.
βIβve got to get going now, Jen- oh, sorry, Yunjin,β You said mockingly, not using honorifics. There were no cameras to catch you here, anyway. You walked off, leaving a dumbfounded Kazuha and even angrier Yunjin.
ββ¦sheβs really pretty-,β Kazuha began dreamily, clasping her hands together.
βNo,β Yunjin said gruffly, beginning to walk back to the group with Kazuha. βDonβt even think about it, Kazuha! Sheβs mine,β Yunjin exclaimed childishly, warning Kazuha a bit loudly, causing Chaewon and Sakura to turn to her. βIf that song was about you, Yunjin, then I think she might not be yours as much as you think,β Sakura said plainly, tone giving no room for argument as Yunjin averted her eyes, shame and embarrassment burning her face a light red.
βThis was going to be a long comeback period,β Yunjin thought bitterly, groaning internally as she saw Kazuha begin to scroll though y/nβs Instagram posts as they waited for their managerβs car.
ermmmm hello! Iβve never written for x reader before so Iβve only ever written in third person, bear with me here while I learn how to write this genre ><! this will be three-ish(?) parts. i donβt know who for sure y/n will end up with yet, but.. I will be posting backstories to this, as it was very yn-centric and we donβt get much of yunjins thoughts. Y/n seems delusional but I SWEAAAR sheβs not. Iβll post some more works abt how they acted and stories from pd48 daysβ¦ sheβs not insane guys!
also white carnations symbolize pure love and GOOD LUCK. get it?GOOD LUCK. GOOD LUCK, BABE! Iβm so funny.
i wrote this in like 3 hours of pure chappel roan good luck babe brain rot pleas forgive me. Iβll beta read it in a few hours after I sleep. thank you jihyoruri for letting me ramble in ur anons for so long πalso I love asks plssss send them. byebye now, have a good day! :3

psalm 32:1-5 Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him, and in whose spirit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, βI will confess my transgressions to the Lordββ and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ debut.
thatβs what youβve been working towards your entire life, what you hungered for, what you wanted.
since your early teen years, youβve dreamed of debuting. You loved to perform, to sing, to danceβ thatβs why you were in your churchβs choir group. The advent show, the way of the cross, everythingβ you were there.
did your parents approve of you being an idol? Absolutely not. They tried to convince you to settle down with one of the nice churchboys, the son of one of their friends. He was.. nice, okay looking. But you just didnβt like him. You dreamt of falling in love, being swept off your feet into happily ever afterβ but for most of your life, you had never even had a real crush! You must just not have found the right guy yet. It only counted when it was with a boy.
you auditioned for SM, and miraculously, you got in. Your days were spent training, dancing, weighing, singing, dancing, showcasing, singing, training, dancing, weighingβ a cycle, really.
you met Yu Jimin and Kim Minjeong pretty early on, and you got along great with Jimin. She was catholic, and so were you! She wasnβt as dedicated as you, of course, but it was nice to have something in common.
you all didnβt get the chance to talk with Ning Yizhou a whole lot, even if she did share a dorm with minjeong. You dormed with jimin, but there was an empty bed.
that bed would be filled by one Aeri Uchinaga.
and from that day, your life would also be filled by aeri uchinaga.
The five of you were called to a meeting. You were a little worried, of course, clutching your silver cross chain and pressing the tip of it into your chest. A nervous habit.
βHello girls,β the man began, the five of you sitting and fidgeting nervously.
βI have good news for you all. You five will be debuting as SMβs newest girl group, Aespa. Congratulations,β he smiled, and it felt like your world had just crumbled and rebuilt itself, three times over.
βWeβll begin thinking of your stage names soon, so feel free to give us some ideas. Weβll be waiting,β the man continued, and like that, the meeting ended.
you all had to celebrate, right?
The five of you met in your dorm, as minjeong didnβt want to bother the other trainee living there. You all begin thinking of stage names, and your eyes drifted to the figurine of Mary that sat on your nightstand. Jimin was thinking of using Katarina, her baptismal name, anyway! Your confirmation name could also work, but you werenβt sure.
βWhat if I used Mary?β You thought out loud, the other four girls turning their heads to glance at you, and the figure just behind you.
βMary?β Jimin began. βLike, the Virgin Mary? Our Lady of Naju?β She questioned.
βYes, I quite like the idea, donβt you?β The other girls knew you spoke a little formally, never really speaking in slang or impolitely in the slightest. It was your parents, after all. You had grown up in a secluded, small town in America, but your parents had taught you Korean, along with your own interest, reading books to perfect grammar. Sadly, that didnβt really teach you many informal wordsβ not that your parents would allow that. You had to be a lady, of course.
βIt seems a bit.. outdated, doesnβt it?β Aeri voiced, tentatively, and the other girls agreed with her. They began giving suggestions.
βWhat about Lily?β Jimin offered.
βEdenβ no, maybe Eve?β minjeong hummed.
βLilith!β Ning exclaimed, much to the amusement of the other girls.
βNing, thatβs similar to Lily, though, isnβt it?β Minjeong gave an amused half-smile.
βI guess so,β she sighed.
βI like Eve,β Aeri voiced, and the other girls all mostly agreed, although more name suggestions were given out, for everyone.
You debuted with the names Karina, Giselle, Eve, Winter, and Ningning.
you said a prayer every morning and every night, with the rosary that was around the figurine. A small Our Father, a Hail Mary, an Act of Contritionβ no matter what, you never missed your morning and nightly prayers, no matter how small. You attended mass on Sunday, and while you usually couldnβt go in person, youβd try to listen to it in the morning, before it was time for practice, or at night, before bedβ it didnβt matter how much sleep you gave up for it.
You were moved into a group dorms a bit after debut, Black Mamba being a sensational hit. You dormed with aeri, while ning and minjeong dormed together, karina having pulled the leader and oldest card to secure the single-room.
You and aeri werenβt exactly close. There was no animosity, of course, you two just never really got the chance to talk. It was definitely by chance. Not because she made your heart beat just a little faster, your steps a little more uncoordinated, your words fail. It wasnβt that. It wasnβt that at all.
you just admired the other girl. It didnβt help that you two had more than one language in commonβ aeri had gone to an international school, you were raised in america. You just hadn't gotten the chance to approach her, that was all.
well, the first night before the debut stage, you couldnβt sleep. You tossed and turned, finally sitting up, whenβ
βCanβt sleep?β aeriβs voice was low with sleep, and she was speaking in english. You felt an uncomfortable skip in your heart.
βOh, yes, Iβm just a bit restless,β you laughed, definitely not nervously. βI am, too. Just a little,β she replied, making a pinching gesture with her fingers, and a smile.
βWhy?β You asked, even if it was kind of a dumb question.
aeri was silent, for a beat. At one point, you started to wonder if she was even going to respond.
βIβm just kind of.. scared,β she admitted. βWeβre gonna be on display to the whole world, and who knows whatβll happen?β She chuckled, throwing her arms up just a bit. βIβm just.. worried. And.. I mean obviously, I miss home,β she added.
you looked at her, slightly, turning your head just to glance at the dark haired girl. βI know,β you murmured. βI miss home too, even if it wasnβt.. the most exciting place. I just miss it,β you continued. You were just a little afraid you were speaking too quickly in english, but aeri seemed fine. βI mean, I understand. I miss my parents,β she agreed.
you wished you could say the same. Itβs not that you didnβt love your parents, but they were a little.. much. They didnβt like the fact you hadnβt found a guy yet. Theyβd ask you if you.. liked girls. You denied it, you didnβt! You were steadfast in your faith, dedicated, you didnβt like girls. You couldnβt.
βI miss my friends, you know. Sometimes I worry Iβll forget english,β you admitted.
βWell,β aeri gave a grin. βIβll talk to you in english all you want if you promise to talk to me in japanese,β
you didnβt even speak japanese, but for her? youβd learn.
You smiled. βOf course,β
the two of you tried your best to sleep, after that, but it was mostly you two continuing to talk about anything and everything.
You could tell aeri was going to be one of your best friends. A reminder of home, if anything.
the debut showcase went great, the song was a hit, everything was good.
you and aeri spoke before going to sleep every nightβ youβd even bought a book about japanese grammar, how to read, write and speak it. You tried your best, but aeri had a nice time correcting you. It was.. nice. You always loved to learn languages, and for some reason, having someone who spoke it already help you was.. a bit comforting, in a way.
you still prayed every night, and aeri would sometimes give you a look, but she never said anything.
everything was going great.
until the hate began
Every little thing you or your group did was criticized, nitpicked, blown out of proportionβ and the stress was getting to you.
you had never handled stress very well. You didnβt have a reason to. There was really nothing for you to ever stress aboutβ other than following god, of course, but that wasnβt stressful to you. You had no reason to be stressed about something like that! You were a good person, you hadnβt ever wanted to sin.
some of the comments were about your appearance. It started to chip away at you. The company was always happy when you lost weight, so why not just a little more? Itβs not like it would kill you. you were three months into an eating disorder that you called a diet.
the second you got up, youβd pray as your sustenance, head to practice, do your schedulesβ the other girls would order lunch, youβd ask for a salad. No dressing, of course, you didnβt like the taste. then, as youβd all get to the dorm, again, if there was even an hour of free time, youβd head to the company gym. Sometimes, when you were just in a waiting room, or you couldnβt work outβ youβd pace. Anything to keep moving, you just couldnβt sit still. It was taking over your mind.
you couldnβt even eat normally. Any food given to you on a variety show, any drink, anythingβ mentally, you were counting. You liked to be in the negatives, you liked to skip meals, anything to be better. This was for yourself, so people couldnβt comment on you. You started to come up with even more elaborate ways to prove you were okay, to be better, you practiced more, you stayed late, you slept in the practice room, at times. You begged the vocal coaches to tell you whether or not you were actually good, and as much as they said you were, you just couldnβt believe them.
it was starting to destroy you.
βy/n?β Aeri called, as you prayed right before bed. She stood by the open room door, looking at you with a concerned expression. Why would she be concerned?
βYes?β You answered, setting down the rosary, putting it back around the statue of Mary that watched over you so carefully. Sometimes, you wondered if youβd made her proud. Maybe if you said the suffering was in the name of god, heβd forgive you. Heβd forgive you for the things you had thought and done and wanted to do. Heβd forgive you. You could punish yourself, already. You could pray for him to fix you quickly, maybe you could give up eating for lent entirelyβ
βYou.. havenβt been sleeping here, lately. We havenβt gotten.. to talk,β aeri began, sitting down next to you, looking down at you from where she had sat on your bed, right next to where you knelt.
you had completely forgotten your promise. It had just slipped your mind, you never really were awake enough for it, lately, andβ
βAre you okay? Youβre kind of.. pale, and you have dark circles, and-β
βOh, Iβm fine,β you smiled, quickly. βItβs just.. lent,β you lied, quickly. βAll catholics fast and give something up for lent, donβt worry,β you assured, waving a hand dismissively. While it was true, it didnβt call for someone to starve themselves. You were lying. Thatβs a sin. But itβs just a white lie, so they wonβt worry, right? Itβs okay, you told yourself.
βWeβre worried about you,β aeri frowned, putting a hand on your shoulder, the weight making you go from a kneeling position to sitting with your legs crossed. βIβm worried about you,β
god damn aeri, and her kind personality, and her need to care for others, and she was just so good- she was such a good person, and here you were, about to ruin her, damn her to hell. You were a horrible, filthy, disgusting person. For some reason, your eyes grew hot, but you couldnβt cry. You simply stared at her, with wide eyes, like seeing godβs light, it blinded you. You wished she didnβt care about you. You wouldnβt blame her. Vaguely, you remembered the first commandment.
the first commandment. Exodus 20:1 I am theΒ LordΒ your God.Β You shall not have other gods beside me. You shall not make for yourself an idolΒ or a likeness of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth;Β you shall not bow down before them or serve them. For I, theΒ Lord, your God, am a jealous God
βAeri, I-β your voice cracked, and you were so determined not to cry, but you could feel your resolve breaking, because you were weak, you were weak to your vices and weak to aeri, you were so pathetic. The older girl let out a small sigh, sinking down onto the floor next to you, taking you into her arms. She was silent, for a bit, while you choked out words that were mostly incomprehensible. She ran a hand through your hair, and was a bit unsettled to feel how cold you were to the touch, but she pointedly ignored it.
βY/n, you canβt let the words of those people get to you.. they wonβt do you any good, and.. I know thatβs hypocritical of me, Iβm learning to ignore it too, but.. you canβt let it kill you like this,β she continued, voice soft. It made you sick how much you liked her comforting you. What would she do if she knew that you were so disgusting. You wanted aeri, you realized as you held her shirt, with some sense of finality hitting you. You didnβt want her to leave. You wanted her to hold you, and she wasnβt even aware of what you felt towards her. You were taking advantage of her. You were so disgusting.
βIβm sorry,β you croaked out, voice a little choked as you bit the inside of your cheek, trying not to cry. βIβm so sorry,β βItβs okay,β she said, a little confused on why you were apologizing, look of worry on her face. Not that you could see it. You had your head in the crook of her neck.
thatβs why you were apologizing, really.
you were sorry that you loved her. You were sorry she wanted to help you. You she couldnβt fix you, no one could. you were defective, and wrong, and oh so selfish. Aeri was such a good person.
the presence of the statue on your nightstand caught your eye from the corner. You turned away. She shouldnβt have to see this.
you could feel the tears stinging at your eyes, the shame, the guilt, the hateβ it was all too much. You needed to push aeri away, to get as far away from her as possible, to save what little integrity and goodness you had leftβ
but you didnβt.
you clutched her shirt tighter, breathed her in desperately, and let out a choked sound. You wanted to cry, but you screwed your eyes shut and bit your lip. The blood was heavy and sharp in your mouth.
You woke up the next day beyond exhausted, but in your bed and off the floor. You surmised that aeri had put you there. You held your head, and got down on your knees in front of your bed. You prayed.
βMary, mother of God, please guide me away from sin, as you have for so many others. Help me to continue being steadfast in my faith, and to follow all commandments well. Allow me to be worthy of your son, and continue to protect me from sin. These thoughts have been given to me by the devil, as a challenge of my faith. Guide me out of temptation, and forgive my actions, in the Lordβs name, I ask for this mercy,β
you stood up. Your knees ached. Aeri was up, sitting cross legged on her bed, watching you with a concerned expression. βWhy are you praying to Mary?β aeri asked, voice light but expression still a bit worried, if not a tad curious.
βCatholics pray to saints as well. Especially depending on their patronageβ I mean, if I lose something, I usually pray to Saint Anthony,β you chuckled, explaining the concept.
βWhatβs Mary the patron Saint of?β aeri asked, softly, curiously.
βMany different things, depending on which version of her you choose to pray to. Our Lady of Lourdes is Mary, but when she appeared in Lourdes. Sheβs the patron saint of the sick. Thereβs Our Lady of Loreto, the patron Saint of pilots,β
βWhich one do you have, then?β
βOur Lady of Sorrows,β you murmured, glancing towards the figure on your nightstand. The rosary was draped around her carefully. Her downcast, frowning face, her hands clasped together, the feeling of her porcelain eyes boring into your back nearly burned.
βWhatβs she the patron Saint of?β
βSinners,β
the second commandment. Exodus 20:1-7 You shall not invoke the name of theΒ Lord, your God, in vain. For theΒ LordΒ will not leave unpunished anyone who invokes his name in vain.
practice that day went on for a long while. You were all practicing for next level. At one point, you took a small break, drinking waterβ your heart had been beating quite fast, that day, and your throat had been dry the entire practice.
during the beat change, it was nearly impossible for you to keep your eyes off aeri- or should you start calling her giselle, now? maybe it would be best to separate the two.
you shouldnβt be looking at aeri like thatβ but giselle was an idol. giselle was not your friendβ she was someone untouchable, unattainable. It was okay to like her, to find her pretty, to want- no, no. You didnβt. You just envied her appearance, was all.
Your eyes were glued to her, the way she moved, her expression, everything, it was-
βOh my God,β you mumbled, eyes locked onto her movements, before you heard the instructor call for you to get up and were immediately snapped out of your haze. You didnβt even remember the event before you went to sleep.
the third commandment. Exodus 20:1-11 Remember the sabbath dayβkeep it holy. Six days you may labor and do all your work,Β but the seventh day is a sabbath of theΒ LordΒ your God.Β You shall not do any work.Β For in six days theΒ LordΒ made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested.Β That is why theΒ LordΒ has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
It was Sunday. It was always a toss-up whether or not youβd have a schedule that day, and today you did not. You watched the six a.m. mass, while aeri slept a few feet away. You knelt when they knelt, stood when they stood, prayed when they prayed.
but you did not sing, no. That would wake aeri.
the girls usually used their rest days to sleep. You always woke up early. You were restless. You hated to sleep. In your dreams youβd see images of a life you could never live, of things you shouldnβtβ couldnβtβ do. Youβd see aeri. No, not aeriβ giselle. Aeri didnβt look your way on the stage, hold your gaze for a moment too long, send a wink. The company didnβt order aeri to hold you closer, smile at you more, intertwine your hands.
aeri would never look at you that way.
but giselle would.
you went to the practice room after you prayed. You rehearsed until you felt the world spin, your skin too hot- until you forgot about aeri, and giselle, and the figurine on your nightstand, and the pastorβs homilies, and the way your parents would never love you the same because of what you had done. You danced until your vision became blurry, so you couldnβt see your hands, so whatever or whoever you touched wasnβt your fault, so you couldnβt see their face. More likely, so you couldnβt see yourself, and the body you lived in. You danced until your ears rang, so you wouldnβt have to listen to the sounds, to how your members pleaded with you to stop doing this to yourself. Till you couldnβt hear the people telling you it wasnβt enough.
till you couldnβt hear yourself telling you it wasnβt enough.
till you couldnβt hear your parents words resounding in your head, the endless comments of it being unnatural, of being sent straight to the hellfire, to how it was the most hideous thing in the world.
till you didnβt hear the way fans leered after you, and your membersβ the stares theyβd give you, as you walked, the way theyβd clamber for you, so many hands reaching, reaching for you, to touch, to take. it ate you up inside, how badly you wanted to be pure. and how you knew, through it all, you never could be. they could imagine you any way, salivate, draw, take, write it in comments. They even had the confidence to say it out loud, passing comments on variety shows.
you danced till you could forget their words, their looks, what you knew so well that they thought, you danced till you thought your body would give outβ
or, conversely, till the leader and main vocalist of red velvet opened the practice room door and rushed over to the the shaking body of their junior, nearly unable to breath, head in her hands and knees to her chest in the farthest corner of the room, brightly illuminated.
you wanted to assure them you were fine, but the cross chain you wore was too tight on your neck, the silver feeling like hot iron burning your throat. You swore if you looked down it would be burning into your skin, leaving a brand.
each breath felt like swallowing glass, and your eyes were unfocused, and your ears were ringing, and your body was screaming in protest of each movement, and your eyesight was blurringβ
but you got up, bowed, apologized, assured them you were okay, thanked them, and left.
you had been lying a lot, lately. To your members, about how you wereβ to your managers, your staff, to your seniors, now. Lying was a sin. but you could excuse it, couldnβt you?
you hoped they wouldnβt mention it to your members.
the fourth commandment. Exodus 20:1-12 Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land theΒ Lord your God is giving you.
you rarely talked to your parents. You should call them, more. Or, more accurately, you should pick up their calls, more. Except, it was maddening. You hated talking to them. No matter how much you tried to convince yourself you didnβt, that they were your parents, and what they said was gospel, you couldnβt stand it. Their prying questions, asking how being an idol was, if you kept up with your faith, asking why the media would report on how βcloseβ you were with your membersβ with Aeri. Asking why you had gotten so thin, and that you needed to gain weight. They would pick and pry at every little thing. You couldnβt stand it, you couldnβt-
the phone rang. Again. You picked up.
βFinally, you answer the phone, y/n,β the voice of your mother crackled, thousands of miles away.
βIβm sorry,β you respond, robotically, like a reflex. βI was in practice. Weβre busy, since weβre preparing for a comeback,β
βYou always have some excuse for us, donβt you? You canβt just talk to your parents? What a daughter, you are. Weβre your parents, y/n, you should actually listen to us, more. I told you being an idol wouldnβt be good for you, and look at you now! Barely any respect for your parents, how horrible is that? I canβt believe you,β she ranted, going on and on about this and that and every failure and everything you shouldβve done better.
βThis is why I didnβt want you going away, I knew what itβd do to you.. we tried to fix you, but you are a sick, sick little girl,β she spat, accusingly. βYou know what you did, you know what you did to this familyβ that I have to live with a daughter whoβs-β
click.
You hung up.
her voice was so grating.
Your mother loved to spout silly little ideas, didnβt she? She was wrong. You didnβt do anything. You werenβt gay. You didnβt like girls, or a girl. They had just been confused. The reason you became an idol was because you loved to perform, not because it was your only way outβ after they saw you with her. It wasnβt your fault. You didnβt kiss her. You didnβt, youβd never-
the truth was that you had left your hometown because of an incident. Yes, you loved to perform, and being an idol was always on your mind. But you never thought youβd do it, how could you leave?
You soon found out what it was like to live outcasted, alone, treated like something wrong and filthy and horrible. Your parents didnβt help. So, you did what anyone would doβ you ran away, off to Korea, off to the harsh idol system
because anything
anything
would be better than living with the guilt and shame, with the knowing eyes and hateful stares. anything would be better than being stuck in that suffocating smalll town, where everyone knew everyone, and all your secrets were magnified.
she had moved away, anyway. Her parents protected her. you protected yourself. You had to run.
so you did.
you had to kill that part of yourself, bury her more than six feet deep, deep enough so that the world would never find her.
You died the day your parents opened your bedroom door and found you with the daughter of a deacon, who helped at the church, who your parents had invited over for dinner, who they had been invited by for dinner. When they found you with the daughter of their friends.
they didnβt know whether to say if she corrupted you or you corrupted her.
they chose the latter, of course, they got to it first. They drove them out of town, blaming that girl for your transgressions. For your sin.
she kissed you, after all.
you just sat there and took it.
it wasnβt your fault, they said to the town. It was hers. Youβre just too trusting and naΓ―ve.
if only they knew, the rest of the people. Your parents certainly did.
they forbid you from having any friends that were girls over, again.
and you understood. You knew. And you took it.
You killed that part of yourself, that day. Buried her, and tried to forget. But thereβs dirt and blood on your hands and youβre still hollow. Thereβs nothing left of you, from before. Bright smiles and eyes, a cheery demeanor, giggling in secret with her- thereβs none of that left.
Youβre not a little kid anymore, a teenager with a crush, no.
You grew up. You had to.
and that little girl is dead.
dead and buried, underground.
you wished Aeri knew you when you were younger.
she wouldβve loved the softer you.
the fifth commandment. Exodus 20:1-13 You shall not kill.
You know, thereβs a reason priests and nuns canβt get married.
itβs because, allegedly, theyβre married to god.
so, in that case, is it wrong for you, married to god since birth, by your parentsβ that anything, anyone other than a boy, was wrong?
you tried to understand, but you couldnβt. What was the consensus?
you knew, deep down. What you were was wrong.
and yet, you couldnβt stop. You tried. But you were weak, at heart. A sinner, with no control.
that was your downfall, you thought.
or maybe salvation.
You and Aeri were the last two in the practice roomβ you were near obsessive with your need to perfect choreography, and Aeri asked you for help, soβ you were here. You had already released Next Level, but the practicing never stopped, obviously. You had to perfect it, make it yours, make it the bestβ so thatβs where you were, right now.
it was late, honestly. Already dark out, and your other three members had long since left. You regretted saying yes to Aeriβ you knew the choreography for next level, obviously, you knew the way Giselle moved made you feel something wrong, something dark and wanting. You tried to push it down, thoughβ you ran through the moves together, you fixed some posturing and some other small timing issues, really, it was nothing major. You watched her run through those parts, and clenched your jaw.
you felt hot, and your hands itched to reach out and touch her. You couldnβt be making this up, could you? She was looking at you through the mirror, your flushed face barely visible from the darker corner you were sitting at. You swore you could see a smirk on Giselleβs face, for a split second, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
you hated it, hated how Giselle made you feel out of control, made you feel wanting, made that dark thing in you, shoved deep down, squirm and claw. You felt sick. You wanted her.
βIβll be back,β you said, abruptly standing up and turning the door of the practice room, practically scrambling out. βBathroom,β was what you supplied as reasoning, before you got out the door, rushing through the empty halls. They were weirdly eerie, at night.
you walked into the bathroom, the sound of your shoes clicking on the ground far too loud, the yellowed glow of the SM buildingβs bathrooms surrounding you. You gripped the sink, turning on the water and splashing some on your face. You felt dirty, and wrong. Your skin crawled in the suffocating space, the sound of running water driving you insane, the sound of your breathing almost too much. It seems you were in there for longer than you thought, though, as you stated into the mirror, lost in thought, knuckles turning white with the bruising grip you kept on the sink counter.
βY/n?β Aeri called, opening the door.
You snapped your head to herβ she was wearing just some white tanktop and sweatpants, with a black sports bra, but god.
Giselle walked over to you, with a concerned expression. βAre you okay? Youβre breathing pretty hard,β she asked, walking closer, putting a hand on your hip, other hand touching your arm.
your composure snapped. You moved your hands to her face, holding it in them, looking at her with wide eyes. βGiselle, I-β
βWhy are you calling me Giselle? Thatβs my stage name, y/n, just call me Aeri?β she said, a little confused and a little irritated. Why the hell were you calling her by her stage name?
you held her face a little tighter, taking in a sharp breath, mouth suddenly feeling dry.
βAeri,β you murmured, voice low. You leaned in, and her eyes widened, slightly. She didnβt push you away, in fact, she met you in the middle, holding you tighter, moving her other hand to your waist, squeezing your hip, where she could feel the outline of your hipbone. You hated how much you needed her, the kiss messy and desperate, filled with an underlying sense of want and need.
βG- Aeri,β you mumbled, out of breath, panting against her mouth. You couldnβt reconcile the two, easily. Giselle was the one who was making you do this, right? Not Aeri, you didnβt like Aeri, right?
no, that wasnβt true. You liked Aeri. A lot more than youβd admit. You wanted her. You needed her. You couldnβt stop, now.
βAeri, please-β you murmured, between kisses. They were more desperate, now, wanting, as she pushed you against the cold bathroom wall, the light flickering once. Twice. Three times.
βYeah? What do you want?β She asked, lowly, eyes dark and pupils blown wide as she looked down at you.
βLock the door,β you muttered, grabbing her wrist, tightly, and moving her hand upwards.
the sixth commandment. Exodus 20:1-14 You shall not commit adultery.
you and aeri never spoke about it.
but it became a thing, now.
you needed her like a drug, constantly wanting and waiting for the next time you could have her.
you and giselle shared a room, after all. you were pretty sure everyone knew. and by everyone you meant your members, of course. the public could never know, theyβd ruin both your career and hers, and you couldnβt do that to her. you werenβt evil, just weak. just horrible, but not evil. you could never hurt her. you loved her, didnβt you? the way a friend doesnβt hurt a friend.
deep down, you knew. It was so much worse than that.
they couldnβt know the way you put concealer on, before practice. the way you were strangely hot and cold, terrified of her touch, but how the both of you would disappear into your room, or somewhere, together, always appearing back, more than a few minutes later, though the tension was always still there.
the way you had become a shell.
you were ashamed, really.
you felt so disgusting, all the time. here you were, dirty, filthy, robbing someone else, sullying them, damning her, all for your own selfish needs, desires, wants.
you had always wanted, too much.
giselle was your temptation and aeri was the sin, the collateral to the damage.
itβs not like she protested, either, the way giselleβs hands lingered, a beat too longer to be friendly. the way her fists would clench on those stupid variety shows, when the hosts mentioned your appearance, saying you were so pretty.
she hated how theyβd look at you.
but you couldnβt see that, really.
you hated yourself, and you had stolen aeriβs sanctity.
it was giselleβs fault, though, you would think, sometimes.
but deep down, you knew the truth.
it was your doing. Your fault. You ruined everything you touched, everything you wanted would die and burn because you were a sinner. All because you couldnβt control yourself.
eve ate the apple, too, youβd think. but maybe, the snake wasnβt just the creature, no, but the whispers of lilith, beckoning her away, promising her everything sheβd wanted. forbidden knowledge, godhood, becoming betterβ and maybe, even herself.
was biting the apple an act of naivety, of greed?
or the blind, blissful ignorance of trust? of love?
someone you loved wouldnβt damn you, would they?
but oh, you knew better. You knew.
you had stolen both of your chances of sanctity and holiness.
out of blind, ignorant, nearly all encompassing love.
it was love.
the seventh commandment. Exodus 20:1-15 Β You shall not steal.
The weeks went by, in this strange commitment.
you had just arrived back from yet another variety show, and Giselle was obviously annoyed at something. It was late, and everyone wanted to sleep. You made your way back to your room, the door open a crackβ
giselle was changing into some sleep clothes. You didnβt really care which. the glimpse of her back, of skin, made you nearly feel ill. You shut the door, quickly, feeling like you couldnβt breathe. It made you feel sick.
you entered about a minute later, to see her scrolling on her phone, with a bored expression. You, instead, went and knelt in front of the small Mary statue you kept.
βMary, mother of God, please hear my prayer. Iβm asking you to give me the strength to-β
your breath hitched as you felt giselle put her hands on your shoulders, leaning into your back, feeling her smirk press against your neck.
βy/n,β she called, a mischievous lilt to her voice like this was a fucking game.
βy-yes?β was the reply.
Her hands moved, pressing along your collarbone.
βYou know, I hate variety shows, sometimes,β she hummed, voice so unbelievably distracting. βI donβt like the way they talk about you,β she continued.
βI- I agree, I do, itβs quite-β
her blunt nails dug into your shoulder, slightly, as she pulled you back, just a bit, your back pressed to her front. Her head craned forward, to murmur into your ear. βIt pisses me off,β she added.
of course, you tended to her anger. You had to, as penance.
later, when you were laying beside her, panting with tears in your eyes, saying anything that came to mindβ
βI love you,β you choked out, reverently, like a prayer.
god never responded to those, usually. aeri didnβt love you back.
thereβs no way god loved you. and aeri didnβt, either.
the eighth commandment Exodus 20:1-16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
βTell me not to,β you begged, clutching onto giselle like a lifeline, holding her arms. βTell me no, tell me not to love you. I canβt, I shouldnβt, I donβt want-β
girls never hungered. They never want, like a boy.
βAnd what if itβs what I want!β She spat back, acidly, pushing you off. βI love you, and I donβt know why you canβt accept that! I love you, not like a friend, or coworker, or whatever else you think! Iβm in love with you, why canβt you get that!?β she asked, sharply, voice far too loud.
you didnβt know how to explain that you loved her, too, that you wished you could love her. You always wanted, so badly, to like a boy, and to love him, so you could hold his hand in public, and kiss him, and introduce him to your parents and they wouldnβt say a word, to be able to love him without just that fact being controversial, to love someone without it absolutely ruining your career. Idols couldnβt date, yes, but theyβd survive if they were rumored to be with a man.
god forbid it was a girl.
you couldnβt ruin her career, or yours. You couldnβt damn her more, you couldnβt ruin everything, like you always did-
βI canβt,β you cried, desperately. βIβll ruin everything, Iβll ruin you, Iβd-β
βI donβt care!β she retorted. βI donβt care! I want you, and I love you. Is it that you canβt, or you wonβt? Youβre just scared,β she accused, rightly so.
βI am,β you admitted, pathetically. βIβm scared.β
She scoffed, clenching her fists. She turned, sharply, turning the door handle, wiping her eyes and slamming the roomβs door.
You were alone.
god abandoned you, long ago.
you donβt know why it hurt more the second time.
the ninth commandment Exodus 20:1-17 You shall not covet your neighborβs house. You shall not covet your neighborβs wife, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
it was a few days later, at night after an off day. You had been hiding in your room most of the day. Cowardly, yes, but the other members werenβt exactly thrilled with you. You couldnβt blame them. You were currently pretending to be asleep.
you heard aeri enter the room. She laid down, to sleep. The lights were off. It was dead silent. You turned.
βaeri,β you called. No response.
βIβm sorry. Iβm really sorry,β you continued, after surmising she was asleep. βI love you. I really do. Iβm just so, so scared. I donβt know how to let myself love you. I feel wrong. Iβm sorry. I want to. I donβt know how to love you how you deserve, I donβt even know how to love myself. Im weak and pathetic, really. If you knew the real me, I think youβd hate me,β you chuckled, without humor. βAs long as youβre happy, though. Iβll be okay,β you murmured, finally.
βIm not happy, actually,β she informed, suddenly, and you felt your heart leap into your throat. βI love you, y/n. I donβt care if itβll make everything more difficult, or if you think Iβll hate you. I wonβt, by the way,β
you didnβt know how to respond. aeri did it, for you.
she got up, walked over to your bed, and made you sit up.
βso can you stop being scared? I love you, and-β
you cut her off.
you clutched her face, and kissed her, desperately. You felt tears well in your eyes, and this time, they fell. You pulled back.
βaeri, I love you, I love you so much. I love you, please forgive me. Iβll try, I swear. Please, just-β
she kissed you, again. nothing was completely fixed, yet, but you both loved each other. You were still scared, of course, but aeri had seen you at your worst, already, and was still here. so maybe, it was okay.
the tenth commandment. Genesis 1:1-Revelation 22:21 Love thy neighbor as I have loved you.
The last few weeks had been.. different.
You had started eating again, or, more frequently, was a better way to put it.
it was mostly because aeri had taken up cooking, and you could never say no to her, and it was kind of nice, really, to see her happy when you told her you liked the food.
you started to ignore the comments online, not even bothering to read them most of the time. You called your parents less, if that was even possible, and started talking with aeri and your members more.
it was nice, to have friends. To have people that you knew cared about you. It was nice to know that people didnβt view you as disgusting, or filthy, or wrong.
you had a hard time viewing yourself, differently, but if someone like aeri, someone so good, could stand you, then maybe, you werenβt as bad as your parents said you were. They were wrong about a lot, youβd come to learn.
on one of your breaks, you had found another statue.
it was of Saint Maria.
you put it next to the statue of Our Lady. You thought it fit, in a way.
you didnβt attend sunday mass, or hear it. You didnβt pray much, anymore, either. but you kept the statues as a reminder, of sorts.
aespa had been doing very well, as well, and you didnβt practice late into the night, as much, anymore.
all of you were currently deciding what takeout to order, and trying to pick a move. no one could really come to a final decision, and you watched the bickering amusedly. You got up, heading to the kitchen, filling a glass with water. Aeri appeared behind you, a sly smile on her face as she wrapped her arms around your waist. βHey, y/n,β she hummed.
βYeah?β you replied, turning your head. she had a smirk on her face.
βI got you somethinggg,β she grinned, tilting her head, a mischievous expression on her face, her hands clasped behind her back.
βwhat is it?β
she handed you a gold necklace, with rose quartz in the shape of a heart at the end, a bashful expression beginning to take place at your silence. βI didnβt know if you would like it, but it reminded me of you, so-β
βItβs perfect,β you interrupted, a genuine smile on your face. βCan you put it on for me?β
aeri removed the silver cross necklace you had worn for years, and years, placing it on the counter. She clasped the new necklace, the gold sitting pleasantly on your skin.
you turned to her, holding her face before kissing her, smiling into it. You left the chain on the counter, a smile plastered near permanently your face. βItβs beautiful, aeri, thank you,β
βOf course,β she replied, with a very self-satisfied grin on her face.
βI love you,β you added, wrapping your arms around her waist.
βI love you too, you sap,β she rolled her eyes, good naturedly, but still held you, too. βCome on, letβs go backβ iβm not letting them watch a disney movie for the millionth time,β
βSo what, you can watch Deadpool?β You teased, with a grin.
βMaybe,β she replied.
it was definitely certain, now, with the silver chain thrown in the garbage, easily.
you loved aeri uchinaga
and you hoped, prayed, even, that the rest of your life would be filled by aeri uchinaga.
A/N: hi guysβ¦ so I love aeri uchinaga btw. uhmm so basically the catholic version of the Ten Commandments the ninth commandment is separated into nine βdonβt covet your neighbors wifeβ and ten βdonβt covet your neighbors goodsβ but technically all Ten Commandments can be followed by following the one big rule which is βlove thy neighbor as I have loved youβ and basically symbolism forever eve breaks all nine commandments but follows the one big one which is like love everyone which means she never actually sinned she just thought she did because she is doomed yuri βοΈπ€

a/n: this is for you aettudae my #1 β€οΈ
1964, Cundinamarca, Colombia Local time: 1:00 A.M. Location: a small town in Soacha, Cundinamarca, Colombia Objective: . . .
You were born on the outskirts of the city. BogotΓ‘, the capitalβ the inside was rich, used to be filled with tourists, big buildings and fancy cars. The outside was Γ©l pueblo, where youβd wake up at three in the morning, walk to the nearest bus stop, which was probably a few kilometers away, take the buses that never ran on time with the rest of the exhausted men and women heading to workβ work for rich people that ran the city till nightfall, get on another bus, and walk a few kilometers home, every day, constantly, while getting paid barely enough to support your family.
That was if you didnβt get robbed, or blown up in the middle of the city, of courseβ political unrest stemming from La Violencia had made FARC, and the cartel had begun to ramp up production and organization, planting car bombs under public buses and cars. The country was rife with bombings and gang violence till the late 90βs.
But right now, it was in the very early morning.
You would be born in 1964 to a poor family living in Soacha, Cundinamarca, Colombia, right on the outskirts of BogotΓ‘. Your mother would be killed in 1970. Your father would be killed en la cantina, at night, in 1972.
You had been working since 12, anyway. Being told of your pathetic fatherβs death by a police officer who clearly did not care was when it was decidedβ you would not die in this town. You would make a name for yourself.
You were right, of course. You did make a name for yourselfβ you took down one of the most prominent cartel leaders in the country.
Or, at least, thatβs what the media thought.
LA VERDAD DE LO QUE PASΓ EN 1993 ββββββββββββββββββββββ THE TRUTH OF WHAT HAPPENED IN 1993.
1985, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 2:00 P.M. Location: Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad | Administrative Department of Security (DAS) HQ Objective: Enter the meeting
You made it into DAS at 21.
Really, it was probably just because the high-rank workers felt bad for you. They understoodβ a girl from the outer part near BogotΓ‘, no parentsβ you just wanted to make the country better for people like you.
You were given small jobs like paperwork and editing documents, until now. They were calling you in for your first meeting. Despite your usually serious nature, you couldnβt help a bubble of excitement. Youβd finally be able to help like youβd always wanted.
which is why it was confusing why everyone was so somber when you walked in.
βGood morning,β you greeted, taking a seat.
βGood morning, y/n,β replied the woman who headed the ground-team. All your coworkers around her looked solemn, and you stared at them all puzzled.
βYour first assignment will be to infiltrate a specific branch of the BogotΓ‘ cartelβ we fear they might be working with either FARC or plan to merge with another faction, and theyβre already quite dangerous as it isβ we donβt need more of them,β
the room was silent. You knew what this wasβ your first year on the job with barely any training. They were sending you to die, just to get some information.
You sat up straight, squaring your shoulders. You would get the information to help your people. You would live.
βI understand,β you replied, with a nod, standing to collect your file.
The woman handing it to you leaned in, a pained look in her eyes βPerdΓ³n,β
1985, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 10:54 P.M. Location: Una cantina Objective: Scout an in to the βorganizationβ
The woman in charge of the specific section of the widespread cartel that was causing so much destruction frequented a specific bar. You had been given her fileβ she was beautiful, with dark hair and pale skin, but she didnβt seem to be colombian. It didnβt really matter, to youβ you werenβt here to ask her why sheβd made these choicesβ you needed to infiltrate one of the largest cartels in BogotΓ‘, on your first job.
you sighed, your head in your hands, the bartender giving you a cursory glance. The place was seedy, filled with alcoholics and sex-workers, as well as probably cartel members, which is why you were here.
You sat up, looking around. It was said Karina frequented this bar. You prayed sheβd show up, making the sign of the cross.
God deliveredβ she walked in, with two other people you didnβt quite recognizeβ one had dark hair, as well, with big eyes, although her face was serious. The other was lithe, thinβ her hair was shorter, and lighter in color, more similar to a brown.
You knew what youβd have to do to start getting information. It made you feel a little sickβ a part of you, though, was grateful Karina was so beautiful. Her smile was cocky and smug, that of someone who knew she was untouchable. She made conversation with her two accompanies, talking and laughing and drinking. You waited for an hour or so, that she was now most definitely more than tipsy.
you walked over, wearing a short, tight black dress that let you fit the bill of another profession, looking at her through half lidded eyes.
another thing about the cartel. if they wanted a girl, theyβd have her. The club was a dangerous place, the bar was a dangerous placeβ sheβd seen a man get shot at a hamburger cart. The cartel was ruining the country.
you pushed down your sudden wave of resentment, focused on flirting with Karina. Her friend, the long haired girl, stared at you for a long time, scrutinizing. You wouldnβt know what that meant, for a while.
Karina grinned, tilting her head. βCan I buy you a drink?β
βI donβt see why not,β you smiled, voice practiced to be smooth and flirty. You didnβt drink, usually, but you needed the courage.
She handed you a shot of aguardiente. It was dry and burned your throat, but it was good. You made conversation. βWhatβs a girl like you doing in a place like this?β You smiled, putting a hand on her arm. βSeems a bit.. dirty,β
Karina smiled, predatorily, teeth glinting in the low yellowed light. βJust trying to relax. You donβt seem like the type of girl to frequent this place. Why are you here?β She asked back.
βOh, just.. trying to have a little fun,β you replied, lowly, voice ghosting over her ear. She seemed to like that answer.
βYeah? Why donβt you come home with me, then?β
Your smile widened, although your eyes with still half lidded, touches fleeting. You still played your part.
βI will,β
you ended up going home with Karina. It took months to get her to trust you, but you had finally managed to get her to let you start working. All it took was a sob-story, a fake name, and she allowed you to work in her jurisdiction.
and so began the first objective: names. You needed names.
1985, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 4:33 P.M. Location: currently, a safehouse for the cartel Objective: Find the key members of the cartel
Karina had a home, of course, a large oneβ you had seen parts of the inside many a time. Of course, they also had some warehouses where they kept goods, where some of the members could crash for a night. You usually stayed with Karina, following her orders.
Some of the members used fake names. You had managed to catch onto oneβ Ning Yizhou, or NingNing. It was kind of stupid to put part of your real name in your fake name, but plenty of members didnβt use false names at all. You supposed it was just because they didnβt have much to hide.
The name was quietly recorded into your notebookβ in code, of course, specifically pigpen-cipher, although you mixed it in with a few different things, referencing dice code as well to make it more confusingβ the members of the organization sometimes forgot to call out their chosen names for each other, slipping up. You didnβt mind, though, it made your life easier.
The group had a whole network across BogotΓ‘, planning to move into MedellΓn, which you felt was not a good idea, but had said nothing.
at one point, Karina brought you all out to eat at a very nice restaurant. You had become a favorite of sorts, for her. She didnβt suspect a thing, thank god.
They began to make small talk, conversations imbued with remarks about the βbusinessβ, people causing problems, supply and demand, and those annoying Americans.
the waiter came, and everyone quieted.
βUna cerveza, porfa,β Karina was first.
βDame un refresco, por favor,β Giselle.
You felt something.. off. Obviously, Giselle wasnβt colombian. None of these four women were. But they all learned Spanish here. None of them really spoke Spanish beforehand. Giselle was speaking very.. correctly. Or, at-least, not using slang from colombia. Had she learned Spanish in Mexico? Castellano? Was she part of another gang?
you hadnβt noticed it was your turn to order with all the thoughts running through your mind. You looked at the waiter, glancing at Giselle.
βSi me haces el favor, una gaseosa,β
Giselle didnβt seem fazed by it. but something was off about her. Something was very, very off.
βKarina,β you called, walking into her office. She seemed to be writing something down. Most likely something about funds or money. She did have people in the banks to clean her money for her, but she didnβt like others running her finances. Too much of a chance for embezzlement. A part of you liked she was smart with her business.
βWinter told me you called for me?β You murmured, leaning against the side of her desk, tilting your head, putting a hand on her shoulder.
βAh, yes,β she affirmed, turning in her chair to you. βI have a job I need you to complete. Youβll be going with Winter,β she informed. βItβs nothing that difficult. Youβll both be going on some runs. Itβll just be delivering a few.. products, to a contact. Itβll be a long drive, maybe a few hours. Sheβll come get you at four in the morning, exactly,β
Your face stayed carefully blank, but you plastered a content smile onto it. βOf course, Iβm glad to be of any help. Speaking of help, Karina, you seem a little stressed..β you smiled wider, voice imbued with a sultry tone.
Karina was honestly a bit foolish. Smart with money, bad with people. Perfect for you.
She still suspected nothing, you thought, as she kissed you, hungrily.
the night ended with her paperwork left unfinished, and you asleep in her bed.
Winter was probably not going to be happy.
Winter was waiting outside the room for you, arms crossed and leaning on the wall. You had dressed into something casualβ just jeans and a shirt. You glanced over at her with a blank expression. βWhat do we need to deliver?β
She seemed to be thinking, before pushing off the wall, and beginning to walk. You followed.
βGuerrilla wants some weapons. Weβre just there to deliver,β she muttered, cigarette hanging half out of her mouth, unlit. You made your way to the car, getting in the passenger, the supplies in the back. βItβll be a long drive up the mountain. Letβs try not to get stopped, yeah?β She muttered, starting the ignition.
You drove in silence, for a bit. The humidity of the air was starting to get to you. You hated the heat.
Winter didnβt talk to you, much. You didnβt think she liked you. You were pretty sure it was because she believed you werenβt worthy to be in the gangβ you were just Karinaβs plaything.
you didnβt really care what she thought, though. You had a job to do.
after a few hours, you had made it sufficiently up the mountain to the trade-off point. You stepped out of the car.
It was still foggy, from the rain and the altitude. You almost felt a bit lightheadedβ but it was nothing you couldnβt handle. The plants and mosquitos were certainly bothersome, but you said nothing. Helping Winter lug up all the weapons was definitely hardβ you werenβt very strong. Winter stared at you in annoyance, mumbling curses, most likely about you, under her breath.
the trade off was successful, but then, yet again, you had to make your way down the mountain with duffel bags of money. It was heavy. Putting it away in the trunk was simple enough. You collapsed back into the passenger, wiping the sweat from your forehead. You felt gross.
βWhy was that so heavy?β You muttered, under your breath. Winter closed the door of the driverβs side.
βItβs not that heavy, youβre just weak,β she spat, annoyed. βYou made us take an extra half hour. Youβre not efficient,β she continued.
βItβs hardly my fault, Winter! This was my first job, I donβt-β
βI donβt know why Karina thought itβd be a good idea to let you help, youβre absolutely shit at it,β she retorted, acidly. βThe only thing youβre good at is being her whore,β she cursed, as a snide closing remark.
You turned to her as she drove. You may be making sacrifices to get information, but Winter had no idea what you were working towards. It was an insult to your pride. Yet, you couldnβt think of a retort.
βIβll work harder,β you muttered. βI want to be useful,β
she scoffed, but at least you said youβd try. She still didnβt like you, though. βFace it, sweetheart,β she began. βYouβre not cut out for this life,β
When you arrived back to the warehouse, Ningning spotted Winter before you. You were taking some of the bags out, but could still here from the inside.
βKim Minjeong! What took you so long?β She chided.
Winter rolled her eyes with a scoff. βQuiet down, Ning. Karinaβs toy isnβt supposed to know our names until she proves herself. And anyway, sheβs nearly useless. Sheβs the reason I took longer,β
you obviously pretended not to hear as you hauled money bags inside.
Two names down. Two to go.
Giselle and Karina were two harder to find out then the other two. You were sure with enough time, Karina would tell you her real name. She seemed on the verge of it, anyway, with how much she wanted to hear it fall from your lips.
Giselle, though.. you had no contact with her. She was always off, managing distribution or making sure people stayed in line. You never saw her around much.
but slowly, you began to become part of the group. You mostly helped on small runs, with either Winter or Ning. Ning didnβt really care what name you called her, writing it off as semantics that didnβt matter. Winter, of course, took herself very seriously, so you continued to have to address her formally. She was such a pain, but honestly, you didnβt mind much.
what you had to focus on now, most of all, was getting Karina to trust you.
that came in the form of another run. Although this time, it went so, so wrong.
You were meant to drop off a shipment near MedellΓn. You didnβt think anything would happen, reallyβ the mountains were a bit far out from BogotΓ‘, and it was closer to the border anyway.
You had been given a gun. It was handed to you by Ning a few weeks prior, under the orders of Karina. You knew how to use one, and no one asked why.
the drive there was mostly silent. Winter still wasnβt very warm to you, yet, she didnβt hate you. You had begun to earn your place, and she respected the effort, if anything.
You drove, and the closer you got to the warehouse, the more dread washed into your bones. βWinter,β you called, under your breath. βI think weβre being watched,β
βWeβve been down this route a million times, y/n. Weβre fine, no one would-β
a gunshot rang out through the silence.
It missed Winter by a centimeter, hitting the windshield. You cursed the fact these jeeps didnβt have roofs or side-door windows. Minjeong sped up, of courseβ if she braked theyβd fire again. It was all a blur, from there. You got out of the car, your back against the corrugated metal of the drop off pointβs doors. You stared around you, pointing at an old building. βThere, Winter- itβs a-β
βSnipers,β she finished, eyes wide with panic. βHijueputa! I fucking knew we shouldβve stayed away from MedellΓn-β
βNo fucking time for that, Winter, get down-β
bullets cut through the air. You dragged Winter behind the Jeepβs metal body, looking over it and shooting wherever the bullets rained from.
there was maybe three people, four, even. Winter focused on the right, you focused on the left. You only had a pistol on you, but luckily you had enough rounds. You aimed straight at one manβs headβ it was a straight shot, and you saw the blood spew out from his forehead. It was a mess of blood and bits of brain as far as you could see, his body slumping over the sandbags where he was hiding. They turned red, quickly.
You peeked over the jeep, again, about to shoot the second man on the left whenβ
a sharp pain was felt in your right shoulder. The force of it sent you nearly falling back, but you caught yourself. You looked straight ahead.
the sniper.
You were panicking and filled with adrenalineβ you set the gun on the other man, watching him rise slowly, andβ
straight into the neck, blood rushed out of the wound, and you heard a disgusting gargling noise. Blood, in some areas, was highly pressurizedβ it would shoot out like a fountain.
Winter had managed to shoot the sniper, finally, which was a miracle considering the distance. Right now, you didnβt care about the logistics of how, all you knew was that this was a trap. More people were coming. βWinter, we have to go,β you demanded, looking over at her.
She was bleeding from her thigh and side. Fucking hell.
you shoved her into the passenger seat, ignoring the warmth you could feel trickling down your shoulder, the way it hurt to move your arm. You started the car, and drove straight out of there. You drove as fast as you could, making it back in just around two hours and a half. You had tied your jacket around Winterβs leg, and her own around her side, the other girl groaning in pain throughout the ride. βYa, Winter, cΓ‘llate!β You spat, stressed and frazzled. βYouβre gonna be fine, youβre gonna be okay-β you continued, clenching your jaw to not scream from the burning in your shoulder.
When you made it back, you stumbled out of the car, glass shards all over the hood, opening the doors. βNing,β you called, knowing sheβd always be near, most likely cleaning some blood after an interrogation or packing some coke. βNing, it was a trap- help, please, Winter got shot,β you continued, calling out desperately. Ning appeared a few seconds after, eyes wide, rushing to the car. She helped Winter inside, laying her on the couch. She had lost a bit of blood, but the bullet hadnβt hit a major artery. You knew the bullet shouldnβt have hit her heart, either. Ning looked at you, seriously. βGo get Karina. And Giselle,β
you did as told.
you rushed to Karinaβs office, the older woman looking at you with a bored expression, gaze lingering on your shoulder.
She didnβt ask any questions, just raised an eyebrow. βIt was a trap,β you replied, panting, ignoring your own bleeding shoulder. βWinter.. she needs- she needs a hospital,β
Karina looked unsurprised. βOh, yes,β she replied, holding your gaze. βHow unfortunate of an event,β
Her words were.. slow. Almost mocking or sarcasticβ you didnβt have time to decipher what they meant. She brushed past you, making her way to Winter, calmly
βNing, how bad is it?β She questioned, leaning over the other girlβs body. There was no hint of worry or concern on her face, just curiosity.
βNot fatal, but serious. It didnβt hit the femoral artery, but I suspect it either fracture or grazed her femur. For the side wound, I donβt think it hit anything major, maybe a rib, but no organs. Even so, she needs medical attention now, Karinaβ speaking of, where is Giselle?β She continued, exasperated and stressed.
βShe should be on her way. She was coming back from a job, already. She should be here soon,β was Karinaβs nonchalant reply.
you decided that she couldnβt really be waited on, and Karina was clearly unhelpful.
βDo you guys have an operating table? You know whatβ get me a table. Just get me a table,β you demanded, reaching for some surgical gloves.
They laid Winter on the table, turning on all the lights. You positioned a lamp right over her, and stared at the bullet wounds.
there were only 2. You could do this, you had been taught first aid. This couldnβt be that hard.
You began to clean the wounds with running alcohol and cotton balls, trying to wipe away the blood that wouldnβt stop, and clean the wounds. You had grabbed a pair of tweezers, planning on just yanking out the bullet yourself when Giselle slammed the doors open, staring at the scene in shock.
βWhat the fuck are you all doing?β She shrieked, rushing over and moving you away. βDo you have any surgical training at all? You could kill her!β She exclaimed.
βWell, you werenβt exactly coming very quickly,β you retorted, now insulted. βIβm sure itβs not that hard to remove a bullet, just take it out-β
βAre you an idiot?β She exclaimed, shocked. βGet out of the way, this is why Iβm here. Iβll deal with this,β
she pushed you away, putting on her own pair of blue surgical gloves, and a mask. She moved the lamp to the wound on Winterβs chest, inspecting it. She took hold of the tweezers, cleaning the wound once again with an alcohol wipeβ but there was no time for painkillers. She extracted the bullet carefully, holding Winter down so she wouldnβt squirm and hurt herself, followed by her stitching up the wound. It took around twenty minutes for the bullet hole to be stitched up.
she repeated the same process with the second, before cleaning the wounds, again, and beginning to wrap them with gauze. Winter looked pale, and in pain, but she tried to show no sign of it on her face. Once Giselle finished with her, she turned over to you.
βSit,β she instructed, voice flat and providing no room for judgement.
Karina had shrugged, disappearing back to her office, while Ning had left to go help Winter, leaving you alone with Giselle. She removed your shirt, unclipping your bra with practiced ease, and inspecting the wound. It had started to really hurt, now, the adrenaline having worn off.
βDonβt you have painkillers?β You asked, petulantly.
βNo,β she muttered back. βYou can handle it. Youβre part of a gang, now, thereβs going to be pain,β she reminded, harshly.
She cleaned the wound with alcohol, a hiss leaving your mouth at the sting. Your breath hitched when the tweezers made their way into the wound on your shoulder, clenching your jaw in pain. Giselle looked at you, coldly. βDonβt scream,β were her final words before she removed the bullet, cleanly, in one piece.
you gasped in pain, breathing heavily as the wound began to bleed again. Giselle held your other shoulder, keeping you in place as she sewed it shut, cleaning it again, and wrapping it with gauze. βFuck,β you hissed, wincing at the sting of alcohol.
βStop squirming,β she growled, and it made you sit still, albeit breathing hard and cursing under your breath. She handed you two pillsβ painkillersβ and a glass of water, after the fact.
βDonβt take baths, youβll reopen the wound, make sure to shower. Someone will have to help you redress the wound and make sure it doesnβt get infected. Karina isnβt good with wounds, and Ning will handle Winter. Iβll keep an eye on you myself,β she muttered, and it felt more like a threat than anything.
you took the pills, drinking the water to wash them down.
you glanced over to her.
βWhat are you, a doctor?β You asked, curious albeit a bit sarcastic.
βYes, technically, I am,β she responded back, flatly. βWorked in el campo for my residency, saw the Guerrilla, saw the way people were livingβ got into this business, just as it started. Thatβs all,β she finished, succinctly.
you felt like the story was too practiced. Too simple. You began to suspect that something was off with Giselleβ something most definitely was. The way she was never with the rest of the group, her detachment, her strange accentβ she was suspicious, and it occurred to you that if you could reveal whatever it was, youβd secure yourself a spot in the gang and officially cement your place, as well as weakening the structure and trust of the organization. It was perfect. This was a great chance, an amazing opportunity. You were sure to take it.
That is, of course, if everything went according to plan.
(It never did)
You couldnβt shake the feeling that Karina had something to do with this. She seemed so dismissive, so.. unimpressed. What was it? Why was she so cold?
You sat at the edge of Winterβs bed, the other girl listening to your ramblings and theories half-heartedly, dazed. Ning was leaning against the wall, the both of you speaking lowly, so as to not be heard.
βShe was testing you,β Ningning informed, after mulling on it for a bit.
βWhat?β You blinked, the words like a shock to your system. βShe sent one of her menβ along with the newest recruitβ into a trap, with only two pistols against a sniper and three other men, all to test.. no, why would she do that? She wouldnβt endanger her own members,β you dismissed, shaking your head.
βShe would,β Ning informed, flatly. βKarinaβs our boss, yes, we respect her. But she didnβt get to where she is by playing nice,β she reminded. βKarina will do whatever she has to do to ensure her business, first and foremost. That is what is the most important to her. Plus, the government has been far too close to us, lately,β Ning scoffed, shaking her head with her arms crossed. βSheβs probably become more carefulβ which isnβt good if youβre new. Youβre probably in for it,β The dark haired girl guessed, meeting your gaze. βI wouldnβt be surprised if we got dragged into it, too. Weβre disposable. Just pawns in this game,β she continued, pushing off the wall and reaching the door, hand resting on the handle. βBut I hope you make it out,β she added. βYouβve been helpful,β was her final compliment, before she exited.
You stared at your hands. You had thoughtβ genuinelyβ that Karina was kind, maybe misunderstood. You really thought you were smarter than her.
you now realized that Karina was extremely intelligent. She didnβt care what sacrifices had to be madeβ sheβd protect what was hers, what sheβd built. Worst of all, she might even know you were an informant already, she might just be playing with you.
you had walked right into the lionβs den, without even knowing. All the while, you thought you were one step ahead, that you were in control.
your head fell to your hands, a choked sob leaving your body.
you were going to die here.
Every single one of you was going to die here.
1985, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 6:25 P.M. Location: currently, a safehouse for the cartel Objective: Find the key members of the cartel
it had been a week since the incident. Winter had given you her real nameβ Kim Minjeong. Why? She said you had earned it, after saving her life.
Things had been tense, to say the least. Ning was considerably angry with Karina, which the older girl did not like. Giselle had been speaking to Karina more often, yet, she was also out the same amount of time.
Minjeong had told you that there had been talk of working more closely with the guerrilla, and that information worried you. The guerrilla was already enough trouble on its ownβ with the resources from the cartel, itβd be a horrible force for the government.
It was early November, already, and Giselle had seemed beyond tense, pacing whenever you caught a glimpse of her in her room, always thinking to herself, it seemed.
she was changing your bandages, now, a distant look on her face. The movements were practiced, almost like she was working on autopilot.
βHey,β you called. βGiselle,β
βWhat?β She responded, flatly. βWhat is it?β
βWhy do you seem so mad lately?β Was your question. She kept a blank, annoyed look on her face. She continued to clean your wound, but eventually responded. βNothing. Just some negotiations that have been going in circles for days, now. Donβt worry about it,β she dismissed, stepping back once she had finished, moving to get some gauze.
βReally?β You hummed. βAnything to do with the guerrilla?β
Giselle stared, clenching her jaw. She began to bandage you, but spoke lowly. βDonβt talk about them. You have no idea what theyβre like. You shouldnβt know any of this, anyway. Iβm sure Karina wouldnβt like that,β she added, dangerously.
After the events that transpired on your last run, you had grown wary of Karina. You tried not to make it obvious, but everyone could tell, and the girl delighted in it. She loved the power and control, of course. Her smile was unsettling.
you quieted, after that comment. Giselle finished bandaging you, stepping away. βStay out of things that donβt concern you,β she advised, but took a second to add something on. βDonβt worry too much. I donβt think sheβll kill you,β Giselle paused, a smile blooming on her face, βYet,β she added, walking out.
Not very comforting in the slightest, but you should figure out what you could while you were here. You sighed, laying back on the bed.
Giselle was definitely lying about somethingβ you just needed to find out what.
The guerrilla had led a siege on el Palacio de Justicia. It lasted two days, with many deaths. You saw the current news on it, even contacted your people in DAS about itβ they had strictly warned you not to unless information was found, but those were your people. They couldβve died.
Giselle watched the news over your shoulder, or listened to it while she fixed your bandages. Minjeong had been getting better, too, her leg much better. Ning watched as well, her arms crossed.
Karina didnβt comment on it. Almost like she knew it would happen.
a suspicious amount of money was given to the guerilla by Karina a few weeks prior. You felt a shudder run through you, which Giselle responded to with a bark of βStop squirmingβ.
later, Karina called you into her office.
βY/n,β she smiled, tilting her head. βYou seem.. on edge. May I ask why?β She was being overly formal, and it unsettled you.
βEver since the attack, I keep feeling like itβll happen again,β you began, ramblingβ it wasnβt a lie, per se, but it wasnβt the whole truth. The fear in your eyes and shakiness of your movement confirmed that, at least, it was partially true. βIm scared, that theyβll come here, and kill us. I donβt know what to do,β
Karinaβs smile stayed in place, as she ushered you to sit down on the couch, there. βDonβt worry, corazΓ³n,β she assured, a hand running through your hair. You began to relaxβ maybe she wasnβt so scary, after allβ It was understandable, maybe it wasnβt actually a test, maybe-
βAs long as youβre loyal, nothing bad will happen to you,β she continued, hand tightening in your hair. βIf you were to sell us out, then, you understand. I couldnβt promise your protection,β her hand strengthening its grip on your hair, speaking into your ear.
βNow, why donβt we get your mind off it?β She offered, looking into your eyes with a faux-sweet expression.
you complied, obviously. Despite the fear, there was a part of you that was drawn to her. She was threatening to kill you if you betrayed her, yet, you still kissed her, desperately.
she kissed back, of course, hungrily and heatedly.
Thatβs how most of the both of your talks ended, anyway.
1986, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 12:01 AM Location: una discoteca Objective: Find the key members of the cartel
It was 1986, nowβ had just turned into the new year. You were at a club, celebrating another year alive.
You had no idea where the other three girls went, thoroughly tipsy and entranced with Karina.
Karina was a bad person, you knew this. She was ruthless, and you should be scared of her.
but right now, with her hands on your hips, in the flashing lights of the club, you couldnβt quite remember that.
The two of you stumbled into the quieter, back parts of the club where there were rooms. Karina knew this place better than you, anyway.
it was still loud, and you could barely hear anything. She pressed you against the wall, tugging your hair, beginning to suck and bite at your neck.
she was most definitely drunk, you could tell by the flush to her face and how her words were looser than normal.
You knew you shouldβve taken advantage of this, but you couldnβt. Your body felt hot, and instead of finding information, like you should have, you fell right back into Karina like a rat to a glue-trap.
you were pathetic.
and you knew it.
1986, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 2:23 AM Location: a safehouse for the cartel Objective: Find the key members of the cartel
Karina had called you into her office, except this time, Giselle was there.
You were beyond exhausted, but did not complain.
They were both intimidating. Giselle was staring at you, coldly, arms crossed, while Karina had an amused expression on her face, grinning, head tilted into her hand.
βY/n, I have a job for you,β she called, in a cheery voice.
βIt shouldnβt be too hard, but youβll be working with Giselle from now on. Itβll be good for you,β she continued, standing up and walking towards you. βSheβll keep you safeβ wonβt you, Gigi?β She asked, almost mockingly, a saccharine expression in her face.
βYouβll have a body by the end of the day. Thatβs all you want her for, anyway,β Giselle retorted, irritated.
βHow great! Come now, y/n, Giselle will explain,β Karina beckoned, quite happy today. Some expansion into the U.S. had gone well, you knew that much, but there was no reason she should be so.. animated.
Karina handed you a semiautomatic pistol, which you stared down at. She then smiled, handing you a small box of bullets. She still kept a smile on her face, remarking, βYou know, these are special. Theyβre hollow point bulletsβ Ningning made them,β
βWhat? She made them?β You knew of hollow-point bullets, they werenβt a secret, just uncommon.
βDrill a hole into them, cut an X to make some petals, and there you have itβ well, Iβd ask Ningning, of course, Iβm not a weapons specialist. Itβs quite easy,β
βBut why? They donβt-β
βEffectiveness. They leave a bigger exit wound, and leave shrapnel inside the body at times,β Giselle interrupted. βIn other words, pain. Theyβre used to inflict pain,β
Karina smiled, sadistic as ever, as she watched Giselle load some rifles.
βToday, we have a few hits to get done,β Giselle informed. βYouβll be coming with me. You know how to shoot a rifle?β She asked, glancing over at your horrified expression.
βNo, I-β
βWhat about a pistol?β
You nodded.
βPerfect!β Karina exclaimed. βYou can help with the interrogation, then. Giselle, Iβll meet you at the location. Try not to dirty her too much, hm?β Karina advised, slinking away.
βThatβs why sheβs so happy?β You asked, in shock. βBecause-β
βBecause she gets to kill someone? Yeah, thatβs why. Sheβs sick in the head. You knew what you were getting into,β
you stared at Giselle in silence. The other girl was grabbing some sniper-rifle that you had never seen before, and several rounds of ammunition.
she loaded it into the car, and you two began the drive.
you held the pistol in your hands shakily, silent for most of the ride.
once you got to the location, you watched Giselle pray. You had heard of hitmen praying before their job, and you still couldnβt understand. They prayed to God to protect them, yet, they were about to take a life.
βWhy are you praying?β You asked, suddenly, acidly. βWeβre about to kill people, God wouldnβt-β
βItβs my job,β she interrupted, which was a common occurrence with Giselle. βItβs my job, and Iβm just asking Him to keep me alive until itβs over,β she spat, coolly. βYou donβt know what Iβve had to do. But you will, soon. So just shut up, will you?β She got out of the car, slamming the door shut. You scrambled after her, and the both of you hauled the equipment up the boarded-up, run-down building, up several flights of stairs, finally beginning to set it up after a few stories, looking down at a busy road.
βWhy are we killing him?β You murmured your question, watching as Giselle began to adjust the rifle.
βHe owes Karina money, and he wonβt pay it. He also stole some of our goods and has been cutting pure cocaine with some other shit, I didnβt really care enough to figure out what. His other friend is the one weβll be interrogating. Heβll die no matter what he says,β Giselle shrugged, watching the empty street, the morning finally coming through the sky, although the dark, clouded sky blocked the bright sun.
βHow long will we be here?β
βHowever long it takes,β
It turns out that βhowever long it takesβ meant almost eight hours. You were bored to death, yet still terrified. You were about to kill someone. And you had been here, waiting on edge for it to happen, for almost eight hours. You felt like you were going to burst into tears.
βGiselle, how much longer is this gonna take?β You complained, although a bit shaky.
βTrust me, I donβt want to be here either,β she drawled. βBut he should be here, soon. He works near here,β
It took maybe another half hour before he appeared. Giselle saw him before you did, obviouslyβ you didnβt even know what he looked likeβ but she didnβt immediately shoot. Her eyes stared down at him through the scope, her fingers brushing against the trigger. He was wide open, walking slowly without a car in the world. He stopped for a second, someone crossing in front of himβ
click.
you heard the gun go off before you looked down.
Giselle had shot him perfectly in the side of the head. You couldnβt see a lot, obviously, you were pretty high up, but you saw enough.
his body crumpled to the ground, immediately, blood pooling around him. People screamed, cars stopped, and they all were looking around frantically trying to find the shooter. Giselle moved the gun and herself away from the window, to the side where they werenβt visible.
βCome on, hurry upβ we gotta go,β she urged.
βHold on, wonβt they see us step out of the building? Isnβt this a bad idea?β
βThey wonβt catch us, thereβs too much chaos going down there. Now come on, letβs go,β
The drive to the warehouse was relatively silent.
Giselle was tense, but that wasnβt new. She always was. But she seemed almost.. solemn. Quiet.
you both arrived, stepping out of the car, into the meeting point. Giselle had her own pistol, you also kept yours on hand.
when you entered, there was a man tied there. Giselle tensed when she saw him, but said nothing. You figured it was because of Karina, standing behind him with the same placid, content smile. It was eerie.
βGiselle, Y/n! Youβve made it,β she smiled. βI take it the job went well?β
βIt was all fine,β Giselle replied. βNothing out of the ordinary happened,β
βThatβs great, really, itβs good! Iβm quite happy today, Y/n, because we have a special guest. I know I said he owed me moneyβ in a way he doesβ but this is something far more important. He works with the Americans! Isnβt that just amazing?β She continued, happily, waving her gun around in the air as she spoke. βIβm sure weβll get some good information out of him,β
βSo, the both of you, come! Letβs begin,β Karina gestured to the man, in the dim lights.
you figured, wellβ the show must go on.
The man was tied to a chair, that much was obvious. The floor was concrete, and there were boarded up windows and maybe one or two hanging lightbulbs. It was a bit dark.
the walls were steel, corrugated iron, and it gave a prison-like feel. the man was looking around, wildly, straining against his restraints.
βHey,β Karina called, walking closer to him.
βYouβre going to tell me everything there is to know about those Americans, okay? And then Iβll let you go. As long as you donβt lie,β she assured, pausing. βNow talk,β she demanded.
βTheyβve noticed the supply into their country. Theyβre working on stopping it. Theyβve already sent a few agents to infiltrate a few different parts of the cartelββ
βWhich ones?β Was her sharp, quick reply.
βMedellΓn, primarily, but theyβve been looking to BogotΓ‘. I donβt know much more than that, I donβt even know who the agents are, I-β
βNing!β Karina barked, the dark haired girl appearing out of the dark. She held a pistol in her hand, jaw clenched, staring up at Karina.. defiantly, almost. βWonβt you be a dear and deal with him, for me?β
Ning glanced to the man. His eyes widened, and he began to thrash. βNo! I donβt know anything, I swear, I donβt know any agents! I donβt know anything!β He pleaded, desperately. Ning looked away, aiming the gun.
You heard a whispered βIβm sorryβ, and she made the shot.
Through the head, perfectly center. Ning placed a hand over her mouth, the smell of blood biting and metallic, letting out a choked sob.
Karina looked over at Ning. βNow, Ning-ie, thereβs a bus waiting for you outside. Youβll take that back to our meeting point, wonβt you? So you wonβt get caught?β
Ning nodded, wiping her eyes of tears. She went over to Giselle, they exchanged some words, huggedβ she came over to you.
βY/n.. Iβm sorry. Thereβs no way to get you out, now. Be careful, donβt.. donβt trust anyone, donβt- just.. be careful, okay?β she advised, lowly, hugging you, still crying faintly.
βNing, what- I donβt understand, whyβre you acting like this?β
βYouβll tell Minjeong Iβll miss her, right? I wanted to say goodbye, properly, but.. I didnβt have time. I left a note,β she added, slipping it into your pocket inconspicuously, pulling away from the hug. βGive it to her, for me. You were fun to be around, Iβll miss you too. Donβt lose yourself, stay focused. It was nice to know you, y/n,β
βYeah, yeah, Iβll tell her- Iβll give it to her- Ning, why are you acting like this? Whatβs going on?β
Ning smiled, laughing wetly, still crying. βYouβll find out, later. Youβll find out..β
Karina walked Ning out of the warehouse. You and Giselle trailed behind, still a few paces away. The bus was parked right outside, filled with people.
Karina hugged Ning, whispered something to her which made Ning clench her fists and cry harderβ you donβt know from what.
Ning got on the bus with a smile, cryingβ though you still didnβt know whyβ and waved goodbye.
You looked to Giselle, confused, watching the bus continue on, further down the street, already maybe a mile or two away from you. βWhat was that abou-β
your ears rang. You heard it before it registered.
the bus had exploded.
there was carnage, everywhere. Parts of it had been thrown into different buildings. There were body parts strewn across the street, a crater in the asphalt, fire, along the metalβ cars had been crushed, it was now chaos in the streets. You had almost been pushed back from the force, nicking yourself with the small, sharp pieces of metal. Karina was still standing, her suit dusty and filled with ash.
βKarina, what- what did you do?β you cried, confused and distraught yet again, feeling the tears build in your eyes.
Karina cooed, crouching down over you, thumbing the skin under your eye. βOh, mi amor, donβt cry,β she reassured. βNing was working with the Americans. The man in the warehouse knew, and was helping her sneak information along our supply chain! Donβt worry, the traitor is gone,β she ran a hand through your now dirty hair, cleaning a cut on your face with her finger. She smiled, pressing a kiss to your cheek, speaking lowly into your ear.
βIβm tired of these Americans trying to ruin my business. They keep putting themselves where they donβt belong. Donβt worry, mi cielo, youβll be safe as long as youβre loyal to me, and as long as you listen. I know you will. Because youβre trustworthy, arenβt you?β She smiled, looking down at you.
you nodded, dazed. Karina had just killed Ning. Ning was dead. You had to get out of here. You figured hundreds were injured. You had to leave.
Giselle was even farther back, looking at Karina with contempt.
you didnβt notice, though. You were too busy watching the flames dance in the street.
1987, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 9:46 P.M Location: a safehouse for the cartel Objective: Find the key members of the cartel
it had been almost a year since the incident.
ever since Ning died, things had been different. Minjeong had been quieter, and angrier. Everything set her off, she came back covered in blood most of the time. You didnβt want to ask where sheβd beenβ youβd just sit with her, quietly. Sometimes you heard her cry at night.
Giselle had been even more cagey, always out, defensive, on high-alert constantly.
and Karina.. well, youβd been spending a lot of time with Karina. You knew she was bad, you did, but there was something about her. It was just something about her, something that drew you in, and you hated yourself for it.
like right now. You were in her office, again, as she kissed you hungrily, hands gripping your hips in a bruising grasp.
your mind drifted. You reported back to DAS every so often, but you did inform them that you had to be very careful, that your reports would be sporadic. Truthfully, they didnβt event think youβd make it this far, do they were okay with waiting. They seemed to have several informants, anyway.
βy/n,β Karina growled, lowly, sucking and biting harshly at your neck. βYou seem distracted. Focus on me, no? You promised youβd help me..β she murmured, almost a pleading sound to her voice. You werenβt stupid, though. Karina didnβt beg, she didnβt plead. This was mocking. You sucked it up, though.
you tried to focus on her, you did, but everything was beginning to get to you. DAS weighed heavily on your mind, and Minjeongβs grief did, too, and Giselleβs odd behavior, her accent, even the way she dressedβ she didnβt seem like she was from here. She didnβt seem like sheβd been her a long while.
βY/n,β Karina snapped, annoyed. βFocus, will you? Or maybe youβll end up like that bastard traitor,β she remarked, acidly, far too much emotion for the situation. Karina had been angrier lately, too. It must be the stress of the betrayal. Surely thatβs whyβ it shook her to her core that there was a rat in her ranks. She had gotten paranoid.
the mention of Ning made you emotional, though. You felt tears prick at your eyes.
she looked down, and let out a laugh. βOh, I love when you cry, baby,β she grinned, voice rough. βIt makes you look so good. But not right now.. maybe in a bit. Stop being such a pussy,β she instructed, to which you nodded shakily.
and like that is how your work went, for a bit.
it wasnβt until late 1988 everything began to change.
Karina had been busy, lately. A lot of men came to her office, ones you didn't recognize and some you did, vaguely, from other meetings.
Karina had been overtly paranoid about informantsβ It was a miracle she hadn't discovered you, yetβ or maybe she had. Maybe she was just waiting for the right time, playing with you, maybe-
"Y/n!" She called, in a sing-song tone.
You entered her office, quietly.
"I need your help for another job. A big one. If you do this, then it'll officially make you a part of us! Isn't that fantastic, baby?"
Karina had her hands on your hips, the same practiced smile she always wore on her face.
"Yes.. fantastic, it really is," you replied, in a murmur. "But what will I be doing?"
"You know the DAS building, here, in BogotΓ‘? Well, amor, we'll be getting rid of it,"
"rid of it?" You tried to school your expression, but the shock and horror was plainly visible on your face. You felt sick.
"Rid of it. As in, you knowβ the building. I have a few ways to make sure it stays gone for quite a while. Itβll take nearly a year, I predict, but itβll get done. Youβll be going to a few meetings with Giselle and me to make sure you can help. Is that okay, y/n?β She asked, in a faux-concerned tone. You both knew she wasnβt asking whether or not youβd do it, you had to. It was a rhetorical question. You would say yes, either way.
βYes. Itβs.. itβs fine,β you murmured.
βGood. Now, you can go. Iβm sure thereβs something for you to do to make yourself useful around here,β
MEETING ONE 1988, MedellΓn, Colombia Local time: 4:52 P.M. Location: a small town up in the mountains; el campo Objective: Find the key members of the cartel.
Driving with Giselle was really not a good time. The songs on the radio were good, though.
the other girl was so frustrated, for some reason.
βGiselle,β you chanced. βI donβt mean to pry, but seriouslyβ why are you so.. stressed?β
βWeβre about to blow up Colombiaβs national security headquarters, I think anyone would be stressed,β
You eyed her, not quite convinced.
βYou know, anytime we carry out a job youβre so on edge,β you commented. she whipped her head around, knuckles turning white as she gripped the steering wheel.
βAre you accusing me of something, y/l/n?β
βNo,β you replied, slowly. βNot at all,β
the meeting took place up in the mountains.
the negotiations were mostly handled by Giselle, but she looked nearly ready to scream.
βWeβre paying you what youβve asked, just give us the supply,β she repeated, voice low.
βI think itβs fair to ask for a little more, linda,β
Giselle was seething. Honestly, these men had rifles, machine gunsβ you werenβt about to fight them. you took out your pistol.
you pointed it right at the 500kg of dynamite.
βTake the money,β you instructed, eyes wide. You looked crazed, most likely.
they stared at you.
βI said take the FUCKING MONEY! You think I wonβt do it? We can add on 130,000 more pesos, but thatβs it.β
They agreed.
Giselle was silent, in the car drive. You stared at your hands.
βYou wouldβve done it,β she murmured.
βI would have,β you agreed, and it came with a sick sense of realization. You would have killed everyone in there, including yourself. You would have done it. Who were you? What had you become?
Giselle laughed, one of the only times you had ever seen her show a positive emotion.
βOh, God,β she snickered. βYou really didnβt think when you signed up for this, huh?β She commented. Your eyes widened, but you schooled them back into place.
no, she couldnβt mean what you thought. She couldnβt.
βCareful, baby,β she hummed. βYou donβt wanna become something you canβt come back from,β
well, thatβs fucking ominous.
Your next meeting was scheduled in the following weeks. You felt like Giselle was.. watching you. Her gaze never left you, but whenever you looked back, she was always just staring out a window, or at something on the wall. It was unnerving.
The second meeting went smoothly, but ended late. Giselle was driving once again, smoking.
βDo you have another?β You asked, suddenly, glancing at her against the dark backdrop of the night.
βAnother what?β She questioned, looking over at you for only a moment, before focusing on the old, pot-hole filled road again.
βA cigarette. And a light,β you clarified, holding out a hand.
βI have a cigarette,β she confirmed, handing you one. βBut no light. Sorry,β she shrugged, seemingly unbothered.
βOh, fuck off Giselle. Just light it with yours,β
She rolled her eyes. βWhy should I? Donβt you have a lighter?β
βI didnβt bring my lighter, I didnβt think I needed it,β you shot back.
She sighed, annoyed, but complying. She kept one hand on the wheel, barely glancing at the road, lit cigarette half in her mouth, being held in place by her hand. You kept your own firmly between your lips, not wanting it to fall.
she pressed the lit end to your own, eyes dark, and you couldnβt help but stare into them.
the end finally caught a spark, lighting up, and you both stared for a second more before breaking away.
You took a long drag, averting your eyes from her gaze, glad the dark of the night would hide your blush.
βThanks,β you muttered, gazing out into the fields.
βDonβt mention it,β
MEETING THREE 1988, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 2:31 A.M. Location: Karinaβs office Objective: Find the key members of the cartel.
It happened so very late, and you struggled to stay awake. You felt your eyes closing, but Giselle would push you, and youβd spring back up.
Karina was arguing with a man about the price of the job. She was aggravated, he wasnβt taking the accepted offer.
The meeting had started off very casualβ she even offered him some of their supply. You didnβt take any, neither did Giselle, but Karina and the man each did a line, snorting it off the table.
You watched the cross that hung from her neck dangle along the table, occasionally tapping the wood. The other man wore one as well, as did Giselle, as did youβ you felt just a bit guilty about it. Hopefully, Heβd forgive you for your wrongdoings. Hitmen prayed to God and so did drug lordsβ as did nuns, priests, politiciansβ all prayed, all believed. At least, most did. They claimed so.
You were shaken from your thoughts by a loud crash. Karina had pushed the man against the wall, yelling, nowβ βΒ‘Me estΓ‘s sacando la piedra!β
Giselle never said anything like that. Come to think of it, she cursed under her breath, you werenβt even sure what language it was. you shouldnβt be thinking of Giselle, though, not when this man seemed like he would die. That shook you out of your stationary position.
you jumped up, rushing towards her. βKarina! Karina, let him go!β You demanded, trying to pull her off. Giselle followed suit, prying her off him. Karina was panting, she looked crazed. Blood trickled out of her nose, and you wondered how much of her supply she was doing.
βYou donβt understand,β she growled, clutching her desk. βJust take the money,β she began, again, and the man finally nodded. She practically threw the money at him, watching as he scrambled out. She let out a frustrated sound, slamming her hands on the desk.
βGiselle, get out. Y/n. Stay,β she demanded, not turning around.
Giselle hesitated, for a moment, it was barely noticeable.
but she left.
Karina turned to you, and like so many times beforeβ you were truly, deeply scared. And yet..
you fell right back into her, letting her kiss you, use you, until she was fine again.

The meetings happened in quick succession. They took place all throughout the rest of 1988, and into early 1989. It wasnβt until September that things really began to change.
Minjeong was always out. She avoided Karina, and only spoke with Giselle sparsely.
You and Giselle were in the car, currently. The final meeting had just occurred, and the both of you had gotten tired of driving.
you were both just sitting there, with the car off. Giselle spoke, suddenly.
βHow do you do it?β She questioned. βHow do you put up with her?β
βWhat? What are you talking about?β
βKarina. I just.. sometimes, sheβs too much. Especially lately. Sheβs paranoid,β
βI donβt know, I just-β you couldnβt say it was because it was your job. You couldnβt say it was because a part of you wanted her. You werenβt sure how to even reply to that. βI just do,β
Giselle seemed like she wanted to say something, but she closed her mouth. It was silent till she spoke again. βI donβt understand you. I mean, youβre like me, but.. youβre just so.. differentβ naive,β
βI am not naive!β You protested, even though you knew very well you were.
βYes you are! I know youβre- I-β she wasnβt being very coherent, aggravated, fingers flexing like she was antsy.
βIβm what? What am I? Just spit it out, Giselle! Iβm tired of-β
She cut you off, kissing you. You were surprised, for a moment, but quickly reciprocated. Her fingers curled in your hair, pulling you closer. You braced yourself on the dash, trying not to touch the wheel or anything else that could move the car.
βYouβre so fucking infuriating,β Giselle muttered, pulling you into the backseat with her. βYou just have no idea whatβs going on, do you?β
You panted, now slightly confused. βWhat?β
βNevermind,β she groaned, pulling you closer once again.
She pulled you onto her lap, and you snaked your hands into her hair, tugging at it, blunt nails scratching at her scalp.
You didnβt really feel bad about it, is what youβd realize later, when you were driving back in silence.
You kind of wanted her to do it again.
You and Giselle didnβt talk about anything that had happened. Partly because you didnβt want to, and partly because you feared what Karina would do if she found out. The weeks leading up to what you found to be a tragedy were tense. Minjeong was out more often than not, as was Giselle. You couldnβt warn anyone, because Karina had such a close eye on you, lately. She just wouldnβt leave you alone.
December came quicker than you would wish.
It was night when you heard Minjeong speaking to Karina.
βJimin, you canβt do this,β she murmured, lowly, voice laced with an unseen anger.
βWhy are you so tense, Minjeong? I thought you always agreed with me..β she sighed, and you could hear her walking through the thin walls.
βI canβt let you kill so many people, itβs just- itβs insane! Youβre being irrationalβ youβve snorted half of your own fucking supply!β
βShut the fuck up,β Karinaβ Jimin, youβve learnedβ spat, and the unmistakable sound of a slap resounded through the warehouse, Karina breathing hard. You heard a struggle, and panting. βIβll kill you, Minjeong, donβt think I wonβt. Iβve kept you around out of pityβ and of course, youβve always been so obedient. Why are you so hellbent on rebelling now?β She whined, in a mocking manner.
βYou killed Ningningβ how am I supposed to be loyal to someone who kills her own men?β Minjeong replied, voice breathy, as if she couldnβt breathe.
There was silence.
βYouβll learn. Now, leave here. If you argue against me again, Iβll feed you to the wolves,β Jimin growled, and the sound of Minjeong hitting the floor was heard all throughout the warehouse. βGet out of my sight,β

Karina was, and always will be, a mystery.
you had found out now that Karinaβs name was Yu Jimin. You had asked Minjeong, shortly after what happened. You went to sleep, and awoke to the sound of the radio, blaring.
βEl edificio delΒ Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad ha sido bombardeado.β
you woke up with a start. You knew itβd happen. But there was a sense of true hatred, in that moment.
you walked out of your room.
you walked into Karinaβs office.
βYu Jimin,β
she whipped around, smile morphing into a frown in seconds.
βHow do you know that name?β
βMinjeong,β
She saw the gun in your hand.
βOh, wonβt you put that down?β
You stared at her.
She smiled, then.
βYou know, I knew you worked for them,β she began, nonchalantly.
βWhat?β
all that work, all that secrecyβ it meant nothing, in the end? She knew, she always knew?
βI saw you searching for our names. You were just so.. you seemed like youβd work for the government. And then I found that little phone you had! Itβs been disconnected for years. They havenβt received a single message,β
You stared, still, dumbfounded. Suddenly, this made it all the worse. She did this, forced you to helpβ knowing? You raised the pistol.
βGiselle,β Karina called, and the other girl appeared a few seconds later. She stared at the scene in front of her, looking between the two of you.
βGet rid of her for me, will you?β Karina dismissed, shrugging off the threat.
Giselle slowly took out her own gun. She pointed it at you, and yetβ
βYu Jimin, youβre under arrest for drug trafficking, terrorism, murder, smuggling, and-β
βWhat? What are you talking about?β Her eyes widened, as she shot up to her feet, gripping at her desk.
βMy name is Aeri Uchinaga. I work for the FBI-β
βIt was you!β She shrieked, nearly mad. βYou were the mole? But you- youβve killed in my name! Wonβt you be implicit?β
βIβll be pardoned by the state, most likely,β she informed.
it all made sense now. The strange accent, the tray she was so tense, constantlyβ you were a bit proud of yourself for noticing all the off things about her, but now was not the time.
you stared at Karina. You wanted to shoot her.
βShe could leave,β you pointed out.
Giselle glanced over at you. βShe could,β
you aimed at her leg. Just a bit off from the major artery in the thigh.
a click.
The aftermath was severe. The building was destroyed, most of your department had dissolved. Minjeong was working with the police, you had found outβ although you hadnβt heard from her since the arresting.
you werenβt sure what to do, anymore. You had dedicated so much to thisβ and it was all for nothing. Essentially, you had failed.
You were currently living with Aeri, actually. You were a valuable witnessβ you had seen and done things that would hopefully be able to incriminate Karina, more than all the other records there was of her actions.
Aeri wasnβt as mean as she had been. She was actually quite quietβ but not mean. You two spoke about it. A lot had happened, and you both lived through it. You could relate to each other.
it would take time, though.
1993, BogotΓ‘, Colombia Local time: 11:13 A.M. Location: Washington, D.C. Objective: . . .
It had been 4 years since Yu Jimin had been arrested. She was facing many, many chargesβ although you tried not to keep up with the news. There was to much going on.
currently, you were with Aeri. You and Aeri had gotten much closer in the following yearsβ how could you not? You spent almost every waking moment together.
Aeri had some work to do, so you were waiting. It was quite simple, really.
You had been offered a position, hereβ in D.C. Youβd work on other jobs, similar to this, but far more investigative. It sounded.. good. Youβd like to help people, thats alwayβs something youβve wanted.
You were shaken out of your thoughts by Aeri.
βHey,β she called, to get your attention. βLetβs go, theyβve got some questions to ask you before you can get hired. You know how government jobs are,β she shrugged, leading you down a winding hallway.
βYeah,β you replied, your hand in hers. βThey kind of suck,β
βThey do,β she agreed, with a sigh. βThey kind of do,β
A/N: I HATE HOW THIS CAME OUT ππ it took me so long but itβs done. I kind of just wanted to get it over with. I donβt have much to say, honestly I might delete this. I had a good idea for it but just couldnβt find the words to execute it. sorry </3 expect a better work soon. Iβm hoping to finish up some less heavy ideas before returning to my cold war AU. In any case, asks are appreciated, and Iβm open to requests! thank you for reading this mess </3 also aeri being endgame is payback for you (aettudae) making her married to a man in honeycomb. that should be ME.
EXTRA: when you read βmi amorβ keep in mind Iβm imagining to pronounced like one word, so more like βmia-morβ. βmiaβ kind of sounds like βmyaβ. this will make sense to spanish speakers.

WHAT STARTED AS A SIMPLE FRIENDSHIP, where you and aeri uchinaga, a former classmate, rekindle with one-another, eventually turned into more-than-friends relationship.
as the clock struck 4 in the morning for you, and 3 in the afternoon for giselle on a breezy, autumn night, you lifted your phone, immediately dialing giselle's numberβjust once more to hear the girl's voice.
after all, you missed the japanese girl.
you're met with a dark, black screen on your phone, aeri's voice ringing through your ears. "hello?" the girl barely audible.
you whisper against the phone, "gi? you there," afraid to wake up your roommate, who'd more than likely ramble on and on about needing her "beauty sleep," which often fell deaf on your ears.
"yeah, yeah, 'course i am," giselle drawls, and it was almost as though you could hear her ear-to-ear grin that stretched her lips.
"good, good," you mumble slowly, to which giselle almost chuckles, raising her volume button, "missed me, didn't you?"
ever since giselle went on her world tour with her members, you both had to cram in time to call each other, which in hindsight, was excruciatingly difficult.
"maybe i just wanted to see your new pink hair, that you never told me 'bout," you poked fun at her, your laugh barely above a whisper, but nonetheless, aeri couldn't help the way her heartstrings tug at your melodic laugh.
"whatever you say," the japanese girl simply chuckles, her eyes darting around your featuresβeven when you were disheveled, in the dim room with only your phone illuminating your face, giselle couldn't feel more content seeing you, that it almost made her lightheaded, even.
"you should've let me inside your luggage, just like i suggested when you told me about going on tour," you giggle, heat curling on your cheeks.
aeri didn't think that, without a person in her life, she would be absolutely crushed; at every slipping moment while on tour, all she could think about was your presenceβyour warm, inviting presence that had her moonstruck.
"go to sleep, you big fool; you always say such corny things (that i love) when you're all tired," giselle quips, rubbing her temples dramatically, as your corny comments only make her flushed. god, she was helplessly in love with you.
you huff, protesting like a kid trying to avoid their bedtime, "wanna hear your voice, c'mon," making giselle scoff.
oh, how you just missed giselle's unwavering touchβher arms snaked around your waist, fitting perfectly and snug, her velvety, soft lips pressed against your temples to calm you down, and the way she just buried her head against the crook of your neck, inhaling the perfume she bought you.
and oh, have you missed the way giselle spoiled you rotten, no matter how much you protested that she was frugal in spending her money on you. though, of course, she'd buy her pretty girl the entire shopβwith a beck and call, she'll hurriedly rush to your side, immediately buying it.
not to mention, the way her hands rested on her guitar, before strumming to a familiar beat, her angelic, melodic voice seeping through. the way she just secretly opens your playlistsβwhich often consisted of aespa's songsβmemorizing each and every song down to its notes to ensure its perfect, just to serenade you.
"how about i stay on call 'till you sleep, yeah?" giselle proposes, which makes you automatically nod, eager.
you throw yourself back onto your bed, your head buried against your pillows, before blissfully succumbing to slumber, your grip on your phone loosening, and turning the camera to your ceiling.
god were you cute, "goodnight, y/n, sweet dreams."

i stared into the sunset that overlooked the city, feeling the breeze against my face as it blew my hair to the side. i closed my eyes and took a deep breath. the smell of fresh air filled my nostrils and soothed my mind, the piles of issues and bad memories left behind.
one breath.
i could hear the bustling street in the distance, but i specifically chose this location for its one purpose; that itβs far enough from the crowds so they wouldnβt find me so quickly. it gave me a chance to see such a beautiful gradient of blue, pink, and orange in the sky alone, and i hoped to see the moon and stars of the night one last time. i stood perfectly still, awaiting their arrival.
one breath.
the sun quickly faded, turning the sky a deep black with the stars decorating it. i looked up at the stars and smiled. how lovely. i loved how much they comforted me and how they helped me forget for a moment.
one breath.
my bare feet felt the cold concrete below, and it sent shivers down my spine. my shirt ruffled in the wind along with my hair, but i didnβt care enough to fix any of it. i could only smile at the moon, remembering how it was always there when there was no one.
the moon watched me fall in love, cry over the hurt, and stayed when it felt like the world was against me. the moon and the stars stayed. why couldn't she?
one breath.
i wanted to cry, my eyes ready for the overload of tears, but it wouldn't happen. i was content, so there was no need to cry anymore. it was finally my chance to be happy. forever.
one breath.
as i leaned forward, i closed my eyes. i spread my arm wide open and prayed for her happiness, no matter how many times i wished i could change the outcome. it wasn't her fault that i turned out this way, but i meant it when i said she'd be my last love. i made that promise and i must fulfill it.
one breath.
i leaped and my feet left the ground as i let my body relax. for a moment, i opened my eyes to see the moon one last time, but i couldn't see it. the tall building across from me was blocking my view. i thought about it and maybe it was good that the moon didn't have to see this. thank you for staying with me.
last breath.
karina was out of air by the time she climbed up the last flight of stairs because the elevator had so conveniently broken down. the burn in her legs couldnβt stop her, she had to reach you. the doors to the rooftop were thrown open, and she came through searching for you, her eyes scanning every inch of the area. she dropped her head in disappointment having not found you, but there on the floor right in front of her laid two pink sneakers. ones that were all too familiar. she stared at the shoes that laid on the hard concrete and she knew.
too late.
she was too late.
i'm gonna riot.
