This day 7 years ago! the KANAMARA MATSURI held in Kawasaki Japan! While some cultures hide their private bits, on this day Japan puts the P*nis on Parade! This is a family fun festival to celebrate fertility and help inform about STD's There is a Wood Phallus, Steel Phallus and this Big Pink one all hauled around on huge wooden hand carried floats. The Pink one here is carried all my men in drag. This is a fun and positive festival that is worth seeing. PLOPP!!! Love it. Best name for a chocolate bar ever! I am so lucky to have great friends around the world - this just came shipped in from Sweden. Ulf in Sodertalje, is a loony guy I met in Burma in 1995 and we stayed friends ever since. He has even been in some of my Travel Shows too (Burma Bound, Trekking in Tibet, Off the Wall in China, and A man A plan Japan). I dont think any other single person has been in my shows as often. He is a hoot and we laugh at the same things. For some odd reason something developed where I would always refer to him as fat in sentences where that made no sense (he is not fat by the way)... like "did you buy a computer, or were you too fat?", "Did you like the movie or are you too fat?" Anyway that has devolved back and forth and makes us laugh. I have to be nice now so he will keep sending me these amazing BILAR candies. Wow they are so good. I think they beat out Haribo x3 even. Zhaoxing in China 2011. I had wanted to try to get to Mount Faningshan which was not on travellers radars back then, but it would have taken 2 days to, and 2 days from, so I gambled and hoped this little obscure town called Zhaoxing would be nice. It was so charming and great. A trip to get there and get onwards but so worth it. As I recall I think I could have been faster getting there by bike than the bus I took. OMG those roads were not great. All worth it for the charm, culture and warmth. Many seniors here and it was so cute to see them often raising grandkids while parents worked. I planned to see these guys well before I arrived in Japan and it took some effort. So worth it! I spent a good part of the afternoon there watching then slowly starting to take photos. I am so pleased to have befriended them enough that they offered me a beer. I dont drink but how could I say no!, so after my one beer I was pretty comically buzzed. Choosing the right FUGU with wonderful Motomi Kumura in Asakasa, Tokyo, Japan. FUGU is pufferfish and was a notorious poisonous fish served raw that could kill you. The trick for Fugu sushi chefs was to leave just a bit of toxins in to have you "tingle" a bit, but not kill you. It used to be in the old days that if 20 people went out for Fugu 1 might die. That was a long time ago, now if you have a restaurant that kills someone, you will be closed immediately (no surprise there!) Also, now in the last decade at least, the toxins are not really part of the "meal" anymore... meaning now it is more cool to have it based on the history, but the "buzz" and the huge risk, are far lesser. Sorry Homer Simpson....
