in my mind, clarice is the one that dominates their relationship.

at first it is between will and hannibal, and hannibal has the "power" because he manipulates will and uses his mental instability against him and to make him more pliant to hannibal's agenda.

then, when hannibal meets clarice, he realises he can't manipulate her as easily as he did will. she calls him out, she challenges him and she puts her foot down. when she is introduced into will and hannibal's dynamic, a shift takes place, and hannibal realises that he's not as much of a dominant force as he was when will was solely with him.

clarice is equally able to pull will out of hannibal's web while simultaneously pushing him further into it. she can play mind games with hannibal all day while simultaneously knocking him down a peg.

and they both crave her, because how could they not?

sure, hannibal and will have a bond that is near indescribable and is so complex that even they don't know how they truly feel, but clarice is the one that they are certain about.

clarice is an anchor for will in many ways, she relates and understands him and doesn't judge him. she doesn't manipulate him and they talk about fishing and hunting and her smile is so warm and her accent is so strong that to him it's like smelling coffee. she wakes him up and energises him.

to hannibal, clarice is the girl. no, she's not mischa, and he's glad of that. she not will, either. she's innocent, but not naive and certainly not easily swayed. she calls him out. tells him to speak plainly. his pretentiousness both intrigues her and annoys her. he admires her, like he does will, but for different reasons.

clarice is a symbol of moral goodness and justice, and not only is she the light for will, suprisingly, she is for hannibal, too.

hannibal thinks he's putting clarice in a jar to study her, and clarice thinks she's doing the same to him. they are both in a constant state of pulling and pushing. an unstoppable force meets and immovable object.

in a way, clarice feels a responsibility to help will. she realises he's a damaged person, and while she doesn't have as much unyielding empathy as will, she has a great amount of sympathy. she's both practical, reasonable and determined, and also sympathetic, emotionally intelligent and loving.

she's warm and kind in a way that disarms will, and stern in a way that makes hannibal doubt himself... even if it's just for a split second.

so when they all fuck off to florence together, or wherever it is they go, clarice easily slips in to a role of both nuturing and dominance.

she feels it comes naturally to her, telling two older men what to do, how to do it and when she wants it done. she delights in how easily they listen to her and how well they carey out her requests.

she praises will, he's so good and so eager to please, even if it takes him a while to admit it.

she scolds hannibal, he needs to listen to her more, use that brain of his, learn when to stop talking and when to start listening.

if hannibal and will are the sun and the moon, then clarice is the eclipse.
