âThe world does not need words. It articulates itself in sunlight, leaves, and shadows. The stones on the path are no less real for lying uncatalogued and uncounted. The fluent leaves speak only the dialect of pure being.â
â Dana Gioia, from âWordsâ
I have been working on this comic âUndergrowthâ for the past month and Iâm so happy to finally be able to share it with you!! This is the reason I havenât been posting as much art on tumblr. I was very inspired by people who depict personal growth as a potted plant, and I wanted to do my own take on that idea: I think of it more as an entire forest or ecosystem within a person.
I hope reading this will inspire you to keep improving as a person even though itâs a process that is so difficult and convoluted.

Atardecer mediterrĂĄneo.
Mediterranean sunset.
âI recall the wind, the lilacs, the gray, the perfume, the song, and the wind, but I donât recall what the angel said.â
â Alejandra Pizarnik, inscription below her etching, The Galloping Hour: French Poems, ed. Patricio Ferrari, trans. Patricio Ferrari and Forrest Gander (New Directions, 2018)
âWalking in the woods I kicked a stone off the path and watched it roll down through the blackberries and poison oak until it found its angle of repose â it was telling the story of my life.â
â Michael Lipsey (via stoicmike)
âMore than the fuchsia funnels breaking out of the crabapple tree, more than the neighborâs almost obscene display of cherry limbs shoving their cotton candy-colored blossoms to the slate sky of Spring rains, itâs the greening of the trees that really gets to me. When all the shock of white and taffy, the worldâs baubles and trinkets, leave the pavement strewn with the confetti of aftermath, the leaves come. Patient, plodding, a green skin growing over whatever winter did to us, a return to the strange idea of continuous living despite the mess of us, the hurt, the empty. Fine then, Iâll take it, the tree seems to say, a new slick leaf unfurling like a fist to an open palm, Iâll take it all.â

ending or beginning, who knows, then maybe - just maybe - the hours will carry you into June, when the roses blow
Fill yourself up with the forsythias and when the lilacs flower, stir them in too with your blood and happiness and wretchedness, the dark ground that seems to come with you. Sluggish days. All obstacles overcome. And if you say: ending or beginning, who knows, then maybe - just maybe - the hours will carry you into June, when the roses blow.
~ Gottfried Benn, âLast Springâ translated from German by Michael Hofmann, Poetry, March 2011)
To create anything⌠is to believe, if only momentarily, you are capable of magic.
Tom Bissell (via cunninggreeneraven)
There is no ageâthe swiftly passing hour That measures out our days of pilgrimage And breaks the heart of every summer flower, Shall find again the childâs soul in the sage.
Eva Gore-Booth, from âThere is No Age,â Poems of Eva Gore-Booth (Longmans, Green, 1929)
âI have lost my smile, but donât worry. The dandelion has it.â â Thich Nhat Hanh
âYou can make any human activity into meditation simply by being completely with it and doing it just to do it.â

Alan Watts

âWhat if the point is to invite these others into your movement, to bring trees, wind, grass, dragonflies into your family and in so doing abandon any attempt to control them? What if the point all along has been to get along, to relate, to experience things on their own terms? What if the point is to feel joy when joyous, love when loving, anger when angry, thoughtful when full of thought? What if the point from the beginning has been to simply be?â
â Derrick Jensen ~ A Language Older Than Words. Â
