Fuck You and Your āNostalgiaā
I was scrolling through Twitter yesterday and saw that Fall Out Boy teamed up with Missy Elliot to release a re-vamped version of the Ghostbusters theme song for the upcoming reboot. Unlikely pair if weāre being honest but I was hype for it anyway...
...and I was not impressed. I mean itās okay for a pop punk hip-hop collab but I wanted more. Especially considering FOB killed that Immortal track for Big Hero 6, I was hoping the song would be a little more intense but alas, it wasnāt. And based on what I saw in the Twitter moment, there were plenty of people that thought it sucked. That I wasnāt surprised by.Ā
But.
The fact that the headline for Idolator had the nerve to say that the updated theme songĀ āruinedā their childhood??Ā
Iām. Iām so tired yāall.Ā
Iām so done with this argument about adaptions having to either pay homage to their source material or make it ābetterā some how rather than just letting the work stand on itās own. Thereās nothing wrong with you disliking a song because you donāt like the way itās arranged or the way it sounds. Hell, thereās nothing wrong with you saying you like the first one better than the remake. But to say that something āruinedā your fucking childhood because it doesnāt sound like your cheesy original that legit wasnāt even that good in the first place cuz it was made in the fucking pre-digital-production 80s? Thatās a shit argument. And this argument is even shittier given theĀ ācontroversyā surrounding this reboot in the first place.Ā
Like I get it. Ghostbusters was important to your childhood, itās where you go when you wanna think about the "good times" when all media centered on mediocre white dudes but chill the fuck out fam. Just like the reboot, the song is a re-interpretation of a previously told story that could be displayed in a BUNCH of different ways. First it was told with 4 white dudes and a typical 80s Rock tune. This time it's being told with 4 actresses and a rock/hip hop title track. So. Fucking. What. Itās not a big deal. Sorry your āchildhoodā is being stomped all over by āPC Cultureā¢ļøā thatās attempting to reflect what our society actually looks like instead of you want it to look and sound like (i aināt sorry). Yāall need to stop expecting the pop culture landscape to always stay the same. It changes and adapts just like people do. Every think that maybe this wasnāt even FOR you? Maybe it was an entirely different audience than you. And you need to learn to be okay with that.
