Someday (1982) by Motoharu Sano (佐野 元春) is the perfect city pop album. From beginning to end, the songs entertain you and make you feel a melancholy vibe mixed with rock & roll and the typical pop rock of the 80s in Japan. The record has no bad song. On the contrary, each piece has a meaning within the puzzle of the album and is essential. “Sugartime" is very fun track which has some nice pop components and easy but addictive lyrics. Its counterpart, "Happy Man", follows the same style but adding rock elements, executed in a sublime way. "二人のバースディ" is a simple birthday song where Sano shines vocally to the rhythm of a piano accompaniment which is subtle but works perfectly. The title track, “SOMEDAY”, has a perfect melody: mellow piano playing accompanied by the ambiance of city traffic, reminiscence of the past, English interpolations within the song... A city pop classic. “I’m in blue” is a triumph within the record, due to its coming-of-age and being in love all the time lyrics. I also want to mention my personal favourite, "Vanity Factory", a very raw rock piece with a glam twist and a Bruce Springsteen vibe, followed by "Rock & Roll Night", a track of almost 9 minutes that reminds of the best moments of Billie Joel. With an eclectic production and sound, but fitting very well, combining various genres such as rock & roll, glam or pop rock with synthesizers, Motoharu Sano has created one of my favourite albums of the 80s, easy listening, fun and memorable.
