Advice for anyone suffering from severe self doubt/imposter syndrome? i love writing, but i'll get mid sentence and this crippling anxiety and doubt will set in that i can't do it, no one will read it, people will think i'm a joke/an embarrassment, etc. It's so bad I haven't written a proper story (just excerpts and scenes here and there) for 4 yrs bc of this. I know I might just have to "get over it and write", but I was curious if you have advice on dealing with this??
Guide: Dealing with Self-Doubt & Impostor Syndrome
First, a virtual hug/pat on the back/reassuring smile... whatever you prefer... because most writers know how much self-doubt/impostor syndrome stinks, so we know what you’re going through. Here are some thoughts on going through this and advice for dealing with it. I hope it helps! <3
1) It’s Common and Normal
EVERYONE experiences self-doubt and impostor syndrome at some point, especially creatives. We want to be the best we can be, and there’s a lot of competition and a lot of noise that can turn our minds into negative thought war zones. Just know that you’re not alone. Any time you’re feeling this way, there are others right beside you feeling exactly the same.
2) Even Successful People Experience It
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been at it, how accomplished you are, how successful you are and how many accolades you’ve achieved, self-doubt and impostor syndrome still happens from time to time. Feeling that way isn’t a true reflection of reality any more than not being a fan of pizza is a statement on the legitimacy of pizza as being a globally-loved food.
3) It Can Mean You’re Doing Something Right
Can you imagine that feeling you got when you took those first pedals without training wheels on your bike, or the first time you drove a car, or when the plane started rolling down the runway the first time you flew? Do you remember that feeling of panic and your brain saying “STOP?!” It’s because your brain was reacting to the progression of a situation that wasn’t entirely under your control, which your brain perceives as potential danger. This same phenomenon can happen when you make progress in something creative, such as writing. Your brain senses that forward motion toward something not entirely under your control, and it starts blaring alarm bells and saying “STOP!!!” Those feelings come through as self-doubt and impostor syndrome, but quite often it’s just your brain being scared because you’re riding your bike without training wheels/in control of the vehicle/taking off for a new destination.
4) It Often Comes in Waves
Self-doubt and impostor syndrome, like other negative thought patterns, often comes at you in a wave that eventually recedes, only to show up again at some other point. It’s like the tide coming in only more sporadic. It will go back out again. You just have to wait a little while. In other words: this, too, shall pass.
5) The Severity Lessens with Time and Experience
While it’s true that even seasoned and accomplished individuals still experience self-doubt and impostor syndrome, it’s also true that the frequency and severity of those feelings are less profound the longer you’ve been at it. But, the tricky bit is that you have to keep going through those times of self-doubt/impostor syndrome in order to get that practice/time/experience.
